hey this is wooly and welcome to my video series on chocobo racing and final fantasy 14. in this video i'll be going over some basic information and concepts to help you get into chocobo racing [Music] chocobo racing is a recurring minigame throughout the final fantasy franchise many players myself included were first introduced to the sport way back when final fantasy vii was released for the playstation since then chocobo racing is featured in most of the main final fantasy titles final fantasy 14 chocobo racing is a fun competitive side hustle with some cool achievement prizes it's also a very reliable way to farm mandeville gold saucer points with roughly 1 000 mgp awarded per first place finish in r 300 which is the highest racing class mgp can be spent on glamours music rolls emotes etc as well as a handful of pretty fantastic mounts before we begin racing you have to have unlocked the mandible gold saucer and acquired your first racing chocobo if you're not sure how to do this don't worry it's very easy and i've got a video linked in the description below that will walk you through it this is a good time to point out that your racing chocobos are completely separate from your companion and mount chocobo you can't register your companion chocobo for races and vice versa the races themselves will feel very familiar to anyone who's played mario kart s racing games in the past with track hazards offensive and defensive items and varying stats that make your choke above faster more nimble more durable etc this is chocobo racing though so instead of just switching the tires on your cart to improve your handling you'll employ selective breeding and training combine well-bred chocobos with good racing strategies and you'll be in the winner's circle damn near every time what makes a good chocobo though under the character menu on your hud select gold saucer and then click chocobo you'll see three tabs appearances where you can equip barting for your chocobo and pedigree shows your chocobos attribute stars the stars next to each attribute determine that attribute's maximum value they're also hereditary and can pass down during breeding we'll be focusing on the parameters tab though you'll see your chocobo's name and beneath that is its rank your rank is basically your chocobo's level which increases as you gain experience points from racing chocobo start at rank 1 with a cap of rank 50. every time your choke bow increases in rank its attributes are improved the game does this by picking a random non-max attribute and raising it by one percent of its maximum value it does this five times every time you rank up for a total of five percent attribute increase per rank which are spread out randomly while statistically unlikely you could even get all five percent into just one attribute in addition you also earn training sessions each rank which can be used with food to increase specific attributes now that we know how to improve your chocolate attributes just what did they do the in-game explanations are sometimes a little lacking so we'll go over them in order speed is pretty straightforward it denotes the maximum speed your chocobo is capable of attaining in basically every build this is a very high priority stat next is acceleration which also doesn't require much explanation acceleration determines how quickly your choke bow will reach its maximum speed from zero so it's important at the beginning of the race or if you're hit with something that stops or slows down your choke boat during the raid after that is endurance which is where things get a little hairy if you've done a couple chocobo races you may have noticed that lather it appears on your chocobo stamina bar after accelerating for a while your chocobo becomes lathered when you've passed a specific speed threshold and begins to burn through stamina at an increased rate the further beyond that threshold you are the faster you use up your stamina endurance moves that threshold so you can go faster and thus further before becoming lathered in a nutshell it just helps your stamina use it stamina is perhaps the most important attribute out of the five and you'll want it max no matter how you choose to build your chocobo shutter speed is also incredibly important but it doesn't mean much when you're only three quarters of the way through the course and your chocobo suddenly goes from olympic gold medalist usain bolt to whatever this is ideally you want your stamina to follow basically the same trajectory as your speed as your triple ranks up too much speed and too little stamina and you get passed when you run out of stamina too little speed and too much stamina and you'll never be able to catch the pack and getting first place will be challenging next is cunning the higher this attribute is the less speed you lose while going up hills or through portions of the track which are submerged in water etc this stat is more important for races on costa del sol and tranquil paths than on saigolli road where there are fewer instances of terrain like this now that we've covered the attributes let's look at your chocobo's rating this is sometimes confused with your chocobos rank but the two are not the same your rating determines which class your chocobo is racing in and therefore the strength of its competitors rating is determined by your rank and your attribute's maximum values the math looks like this sum of all max attributes divided by 500 times your rank plus 10. that will provide you to choose rating seen here which in turn determines which class you'll be racing in seen here higher classes are in higher payouts both in terms of experience points and mgp while higher pedigreed chocobos ostensibly with higher starting max stats due to star ratings require more experience to rank up this also means that feeding your chocobo to increase its attributes will never bump you up a racing class finally we're going to discuss pedigree increasing your chocobos pedigree through breeding is the ultimate goal as each increase in pedigree adds an additional 40 points to each of your stats maximum values this is incredibly important because as we discussed earlier attributes are improved when you rank up or train based on a percentage of your attribute's maximum value so not only is your high pedigree chocobo going to be better than a low pedigree chocobo when both are at rank 1 but that difference is only going to increase as you gain experience and ranks your starting chokobo is pedigree 1. in order to get a pedigree 2 chocobo you have to level your current bird to rank 40 then retire it and breed it you can level it all the way to 50 but there's no reason to do so unless it's a pedigree 9 chocobo you plan on keeping so you got it to 40 and retired it now it's time to breed you'll need another chocobo of the opposite sex for the next part instead of leveling another bird all the way to 40 and repeating the process you can just buy a covering from the npc's in chocobo square the gold saucer a covering is a one-time use breeder bird just make sure you buy the right sex and the appropriate pedigree the baby chocobo will always have the pedigree of the lowest chocolate parent plus one so you can't just buy a pedigree eight covering to breed with your pedigree one bird and game the system that should cover most of the basic concepts for chocobo racing and final fantasy 14. get out there experiment with your builds and abilities and i'll see you in r300 if you've got any questions or just want to challenge me to a race i do stream on twitch in addition we've got a discord setup and the links for both will be in the description below also please subscribe to the youtube channel too i'll be making new videos that cover a broader range of topics within final fantasy and other games so i hope to see you back thanks for watching willie signing off you
