a wonderful experience of the daily retreat for the last 33 days as we continue our path to holiness early this year we are blessed to have our consecration to mary that has helped us to know more and understand our importance to our call to holiness finally our journey with saint joseph that had opened our eyes on the true essence of his role and responsibility in the fulfillment of jesus christ mission for all of us we are blessed to have saint joseph mother mary jesus christ the holy family in our journey before we celebrate the mass we will be led to our day 33 reading and prayer let us continue to journey and walk together with the holy family remember you will never walk alone thank you and to god be the glory the joyful mysteries i believe in god the father almighty creator of heaven and earth i believe in jesus christ's only son our lord was conceived by the power of the holy spirit the virgin mary is suffered under pontius pilate once crucify died and was buried he is our way of knowing we are committed to the truth and are at peace before him no matter what our conscience says may charge us sweet for god is greater than our hearts and all this is known to him beloved if our conscience says have nothing to charge us with we can be sure that god is with us and that we will receive a descent whatever he we asked why because you are keeping his commandments and knowing what is pleasing in his sight his commandment is these we are to believe in the name of his son jesus christ and i to love one another as he commanded us those who keep his commandments remain in him and he in them and this is how we know that remains in us from the spirit that he gave us the void of the lord thanks be to god [Music] [Applause] yo believe in me and let me live in you jesus said to his disciples i am the true vine and my father is the vine grower he prunes away every barren branch but the fruitful ones he trims clean to increase their yield you are clean already thanks to the word i have spoken to you live on in me as i do in you no more than a branch can bear fruit of itself apart from the vine can you bear fruit apart from me i am divine you are the branches he who lives in me and i in him will produce abundantly for apart from me you can do nothing a man who does not live in me is like a withered rejected branch picked up to be thrown in the fire and burnt if you live in me and my words stay part of you you may ask what you will it will be done for you my father has been glorified your bearing much fruit and becoming my disciples the gospel of the lord praise you o lord jesus christ you know as we celebrate our sunday liturgy for this fifth sunday in ordina in uh of easter sorry it's it's interesting that our first reading from the acts of the apostles basically recounts what happened when saul paul had this conversion experience you could just imagine the the shock of the disciples it was a big question mark for them why the lord chose paul to join them to be an apostle to the gentiles perhaps at the back of their minds they were thinking is this a joke choosing someone who wanted to eradicate the followers of christ from the face of the earth why him in the same vein i'd like to perhaps put your attention joseph why choose joseph to become the foster father of jesus there could have been an array of choices but why him and if we look at his profile again it's still a question mark true he was god fearing but he wanted things sort of planned out well he had set in his mind that he would wed mary but then we know what happened to him he had a lot of questions and he wrestled with the fact given jewish law and culture how can this be like mary in the annunciation that was his question and joseph though silent how can this be and come to think of it because he wanted things the way he planned it out he didn't want any hassle in his life he just slept it off just in slumber that's why we have the sleeping saint joseph as our icon but you see as we take the cue from pope francis who declared this year of saint joseph perhaps joseph can teach us many things and the answer why joseph why him can be specified in how we should live our christian lives in our second reading it's interesting from this letter of john the first letter of john the first line perhaps gives us a little bit of an answer the author of john it could not be the apostle john perhaps it could be his disciple was telling the community or his listeners little children let us love in deed and in truth and not merely talking about it many translations to that but i think this first letter is an invitation to go beyond words to become a witness of christ and that is saint joseph he became a witness of god in fact a silent witness no words from scripture mary had words but joseph did not and as we celebrate also this feast of saint joseph the worker we can look at him as a silent worker isn't that something to be inspired about for you who have been working for the church couples for christ in your families in community in your communities wherever you are isn't joseph someone to follow not seeking any adulation in whatever work not seeking any attention but just unassumingly working in the background and doing god's work so what we see in saint joseph are his deeds but again if we look at the gospel the core of the liturgy of the word's message today we will understand more why joseph was chosen this text from john 15 1-8 the image of the vine grower we the branches and the lord jesus our only true vine tells us of what joseph lived out and what we are called to live out look at that image the lord telling us as he told his disciples i am the true vine and my father is the vine grower and we are the branches it's a simple but profound lesson [Music] we should always be attached to jesus divine who is intimately connected to the vine grower no one else but his father if you have been attending mass daily or having your own meditation of the daily readings then you will understand with depth why the lord was telling his disciples in this last discourse from john 13 to 17 the great revelation of who he is and what is that the lord specified this in one line when you see me you see the father when you see the father you see me don't you know that i am in the father and the father is in me pope francis in patrice corde given all his traits of saint joseph as a father with a a beloved heart a tender and loving heart an obedient heart an accepting heart a creatively courageous heart a working heart at the end the seventh rate was that pope francis pointed out joseph is a father in the shadows and what did he mean by that he meant that he was the shadow of god the father when he took care of jesus the only begotten son of god so just stretch your imagination from the birth of jesus as he reared jesus he's growing up years until he was ready for ministry joseph was a shadow of the father joseph made sure that jesus would know the vine grower and he lived it out so well so profoundly by being attached to jesus whom he cared for you know something to think about in our own lives something we are also invited to emulate isn't it can you be a father in the shadows you know i always say this no like when i became a priest they called me father and what is that all about when they say father milo they they're saying you should be the mirror of the father for you who are fathers in your families shouldn't you mirror the father god even mothers even sons and daughters because i think the holy father was so prophetic in telling us the image of saint joseph as a father in the shadows should invite us all of us all who believe in god all of us are christians and proclaim the faith that we should be like the father in the shadows radiating the father god in our life and in our service to the church just a last brief point you know the gospel is very striking and i do not know if you noticed that when the lord talks about being the vine and with the branches the whole text of john speaks of bearing fruit bruce wilkins on uh a protestant author came out with you know a a short book entitled secrets of divine and he was able to identify there are many translations but i do not know if you notice look at the new american bible and see this text contemplate on it after your mass and you will see there are details that you have to notice about the secrets of the vine i borrow his points just three points he said there is a movement of bearing fruit the first one is really to bear fruit the second one is to bear more fruit finally you bear much fruit the translation in english is there to bear fruit to bear more fruit and to bear much fruit but then he indicates bruce wilkinson does in the spiritual life there are three words to characterize just bearing fruit bearing more fruit and bearing much fruit what are they in bearing fruit it's called disciplining in bearing more fruit it's called pruning and in bearing much fruit it is called abiding that's why the lord said remain in me as i in you look at those three words and see that in the life of saint joseph the first one bearing fruit disciplining wasn't he disciplined when he was revealed by in all his dreams actually there are actually four dreams but you have to discover it in the scriptures but in every dream he was being enlightened on how he should look at his relationship with god and his life for example he just thought i should be married the way it should be but it did not happen so he was disciplined by god and that was the fruit when he woke up he took mary as his wife a pregnant wife but that was not enough he still had to be pruned you know when you look at the if they say here in the philippines if you are a plantito or plantita no no you will understand it when you take care of plants when you talk of pruning it is streaming clean you have to trim like the branches why you're not killing it you're cleaning it more so that it will bear more fruit and joseph was pruned that way imagine the great threat of herod wanted to kill the messiah again in a dream he just had to wake up and go and travel to egypt if you have read the book of under donald calloway you will understand that that travel was not fit for an old man so in the words of mother angelica this was a young joseph who traveled the road to egypt and moving through that ravel it was a moment also that he had to be pruned i would always say saint joseph and the holy family was the first tnt tag tago in tagalog they had to hide in egypt the holy father in patrice cordee talked about joseph and the holy family as you know an inspiration to refugees overseas filipino workers migrants who are struggling and being pruned in their lives but then they just went back after egypt so that the plan of god will be fulfilled and when things were a-okay then the abiding came in joseph was a faithful silent worker he was the foster father who took care of his son imagine those years that are not written in scripture perhaps from the year 12 up to 30 when he made sure he would be at the side of jesus and jesus always introduced in scripture the son of the carpenter he was there abiding that working father for his son i guess the gospel is a powerful message for all of us to be like saint joseph attached to the true vine [Music] the shadow of the vine grower the father disciplined pruned and abided to make sure that the plan of salvation would pursue bearing much fruit and here we are we are the fruits of god's love thank you saint joseph amen i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and became man and by the holy spirit virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and life of the world to come amen let us now open our hearts in prayer to our father who has shown his power to heal through his son jesus the true vine let our response be lord hear our prayer lord hear our prayer for the sick among us that when we feel the gentle healing power of jesus touch we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for those among us whose hearts are sick who are possessed by hear and discouragement by confusion or gift the chase jesus may cast out these demons by his word of power we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for those among us whose souls are sick who are entangled with selfish pride in lust and laziness in greed for power in hatred in self-sufficiency that we may be liberated from our sin we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for those among us who are called to administer god's healing for doctors and nurses for the ministers of christ church for parents and friends that we may know the power of healing with christ
