learn the passing of your beloved husband brother and family member mr farrendale dale smith i wanted to extend my sincerest condolences in your laws an international entertainer with a trademark voice he truly utilized his god-given talents as a director composer vocalist and producer to educate and inspire countless vocalists and musicians across the world he was a strong spiritual warrior and a musical genius he shares genius with several churches and especially in his own church morningstar missionary baptist church with reverend [Music] entrusted with special gifts and he enjoyed sharing them with the world including national and international officials and dignitaries leaders and celebrities his smile was infectious his weight was shocked and he constantly had his family and those around him institutions although his earthly assignments are complete and his appointment on this earth has come to close his legacy an impact will live on for years to come please know that my heart goes out to you in this time of difficulty yeah may beautiful memories of dale sustain strengthen and bring support to you as you have it as you navigate the days ahead may the hope of heaven and the tender touch of god be with you always my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family and may you be blessed with the peace of god which transcends all understanding the sympathy and respectfully senator linda chesterfield assistant protector of the arkansas state senate may god bless you [Applause] [Music] and there was a musician and all these preachers do understand that we don't want no sad musician to come out of church amen we thank god dr featherstone we pray there's always creatures there is a word to the family i looked around and i saw all kind of preachers and i've been to a lot of preachers [Music] of here these gospel preachers [Music] is [Music] and the word [Music] [Music] [Music] about [Music] [Music] we need [Music] full of joy and all is [Music] [Music] on a hot day before you a few today ago on the 12th day of september 2021 [Music] god looked around [Music] [Music] is [Music] and he says [Music] [Music] is [Applause] [Music] oh [Music] [Music] is [Music] [Music] that in the midst of our words of comfort you understand as i heard [Music] [Music] [Music] push it on their phone but i stopped telling you this morning on my way glory that god will take you in your mr god [Music] john said that him not because of his problems one of these days soon and very soon [Music] is [Music] [Music] his body might be here but his spirit is with the lord [Music] of the lord [Music] expression two minutes and they have given us an order and we'll follow that order beginning with spread connection good morning to pastor jenkins misses on the roster for family and friends i know this program says that my name is fred but my government name is freddy and i'm going to tell you a little bit about my brother dale now i had the pleasure of being his big brother for 50 years now i referred to him as my big little brother okay but i'm also going to tell you because there's a question even to our family members that some people have wanted to know how did he get his name and i'll beat you and tell you dale well actually let's start with my mother when my mother was pregnant with dale she ate this breakfast cereal called farina [Music] and she was thinking that there was gonna be a girl instead of a boy because at that time people didn't ask you know what the sex of the baby's gonna be so she thought he was gonna be a girl so she's gonna name him with the h at the end but instead she came out with a boy so also on that day um there was a gentleman that was elected governor of the state of arkansas by the name of dale bombers and of course his name his first name spelled d-a-l-e so my mother wanted to be colorful and she decided she couldn't call him farina so she dropped the a [Music] now if you have ever heard dale in interviews i am one of the people that he gives credit to for him becoming a musician because when i was in junior high school i played saxophone i still do today as a hobby it's not anything i do every day but i played the saxophone and he was so fascinated with me being a saxophonist and i guess after i really learned how to play mirrorhead lively but i like to say i'm one of the people that he gives credit to the other he gives to his sister freedom for helping him with keyboarding and learning how to sing excuse me but anyway i am so proud to say that dale was my big little brother but the one thing that i'm most proud of no matter where dale went and wherever he traveled to he always came back home and you would find him at a church on sunday morning [Music] amen but also damn as most of you know [Music] [Music] and actually i now know why the chicken crossed the road [Music] [Applause] is that i was trying to come up with one way to really sum dale up and i really came up with two words and that's gentle john he was a gentle giant dale was easygoing lovable he was an entertaining person and of course like that i don't have all day i can't tell you everything that bill got himself into but you know he was just a joker from day one he's always been a big person and uh because actually he was born that's a big dale was like i said a jokester from elementary school all the way through high school and evening to his professional life and something that he shared with me was that he told me one time he told me many things but he did tell me that um i'm all about the life by the sponsor he said that one time he got invited over to a young lady's house and that uh she had two kids and the first thought on my mind was she delivered a baby so anyway he said he got over there they got into the conversation and then he you know enjoyed chatting with the lady she excused herself and went to another room her two kids ran up today and they looked at it and they said i'm honestly you rich he said what i don't want to see you rich he said why would you want to tell you i'm rich [Music] again i thank you all [Applause] amen now i don't know how many minutes two minutes [Music] [Music] [Music] yes sonia frieda freddie and all the other family members and to all those dan and music teachers who said that dale smith was too to unorthodox a successful musician [Music] those naysayers had a point daniel smith wasn't just a successful musician through confronting and conquering his personal and professional challenges dale became a once-in-a-lifetime transformative entertainer in his unique and uncanny way dale used humor and music to address family and societal issues through his social media presence dale provided a safe space to express unconventional and he gave voices to many people who were overlooked by the mainstream media dale smith was driven he was purposeful and he was professional he was much much more than a new musician in a few minutes i have left i want to tell you about three characteristics that dale smith leaves behind for us to cherish as we celebrate his memory first his smile then his mind and finally his heart dale swan little smith had an infectious and joyous smile like none of that i had ever seen before since he would show you all of his teeth he had the ability to say outrageous things like that baby show is ugly and he would smile with that million-dollar smile before long you found yourself thinking [Music] about his it had a deeper meaning for me it meant that i was welcome i was accepted just as i was without judgment when i was with dale smith i was safe dale's mind who can measure the mind of a man after law school and after politics i consider myself more than a 2014 study confirmed what we all knew about dale's mind it said that for a musician when they teach themselves how to play one instrument it's like a full mental world that study confirmed what we all knew about dale's mind that his mind was different his mind was strong his mind was sturdy dale was intentional about the way he used his mind he would ask you about your family because it was important to him and because he had the capacity to learn and to know about your family that was stella's mind simultaneously dale smith could write a song while talking on the phone while watching television by making himself a standard as he negotiated the details of the contract and posted on his opinion on facebook all at the same time and dale's heart we can all recall the way that dale smith he had a heart for the underdog the trouble dale's heart made you feel that all his attention was focused on you i will admit that i took a lot of my dating advice from yeah and as life goes on at one point we found ourselves single again [Music] until the long cane came off [Music] have you seen her but in doing so you hit with my brothers when you get hard can you brought him dale's infectious smile you opened up his mind to love again and you freed him to hope and to trust him you will forever be dead absolutely and undoubtedly on this earth his last thoughts i want to close with something that the family made to me wednesday was a very difficult day i can't tell you how difficult it was i was talking to kim and she said tomorrow i put a scripture in your heart it just says her mother armstrong and she then shook me here from isaiah 41-10 soon after my good friend teresa nelson called me and she said you're not doing well i'm going to send you a scripture and you know what it was isaiah 41 10. so family you're going to have some dark days some difficult days but god is with you i'm going to leave this week from the message it says don't panic i am with you there's no need to fear for i am your god i'll give you on strength god [Applause] so grace and peace to you from god our father and the lord jesus christ god deposits into each of us gifts and talents it is up to us to nurture develop and share him with his people dale was blessed with multiple gifts and talents and he genuinely shared him willingly and freely with others he discovered his god-given talent at a young age and he was wise enough to nurture treasure develop and share with the world that's a whole sermon in that last sentence why isn't that dale played on stages into audiences across the world the list of artists is way too long to even attempt to list but here are just a few names to deposit with you people like herbie hancock b.b king dela reese frederick king and most recently bridgewater whether performing on cruise ships or in las vegas to perform the appropriate events of business leaders and titans national figures celebrities are performing at fundraisers jam sessions concerts or worshiping by in church dale shared his talent and he did so with the spirit of excellence i met dale in the lobby of the peabody hotel i remember it very clearly he was wearing a white cowboy hat a white western shirt blue jeans and the biggest western belt bubble i had ever seen i looked at this man and said what man a man such a at that time i was not connected to any of the music we've seen here in central arkansas and i was leading a musician to play for an awards event and our mutual friend terry hollingsworth said here's your guy looking at her looking at him if you say something but shortly with his clique with that infectious smile we began discussing the needs of the event and i ultimately booked him and savor salon under the moniker of lime and roses and let me tell you dale did not cut me not one discount i paid every coin dale served as a musical advisor for me i always marveled at his ability to play absolutely anything he always stressed the importance of having a diverse repertoire and the ability to play a variety of genres his versatility and talent made it possible for him to be among people from all walks of life we often discuss possible jazz artists to bring to mosaic temples cultural center and chuck little rock as a whole we discussed the local music scene and all the artists and his love and passion for music was ever present there was never a time i was on the phone with dale for less than two hours to be on her own with dale was to figure out an exit strategy on how he were going to get off the phone with them and that was a short phone call we would discuss everything and nothing he was my shady partner he was my penny partner we talked serious stuff to the most trivial things on earth he had an uncanny way of making me laugh at myself and that's something i really don't do he had a really talented way of doing that i always will treasure our time spent together and all the wonderful memories and thank you kim for continuing to tolerate these long conversations that we would have after you to marry and with that i want to say piggybacking on what lamar had said about he was never married again i remember kevin and dale started dating about the same time uh scott and i scott and i started dating damn what we didn't talk about we didn't talk about his relationships we didn't talk about the journeys i said oh she must be something special he was like she is i said she don't put up with your bracelet i think so i remember the day he went shopping for the wreath and he sent me a text i'm gonna marry her you gonna make her kim yes i'm gonna marry kim and he sent me a picture of the ring i was just beaming and every time i saw it i kept waiting i'm looking i'm looking at kim's finger i'm looking looking at kim springer still no ring but i would go it's good to see him because i was counting down she didn't love it i waited on my when is he going to do this and he was like time in the right time don't worry so to the smith family and to his beloved wife kim i leave with you romans 15 13. may the god of hope fill you with joy and peace as you trust in him so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the holy spirit thank you love always [Applause] so good morning uh i recognize a few faces in here i am i know dale from uh since i was about 15 years old i ain't my age but i'm in my third but uh i met dale in memphis tennessee at a church called brittany money apostle bill atkins through the minister of music at that time was ernest williamson and um they uh orchestrated that he worked for around japan i was the road manager i used to pay dale his chats on the road of his kids and stuff uh this was back in the early 2000s since then i've been living overseas for about [Music] 15 years in germany australia japan countries i can't even pronounce sometimes i'm from north memphis so i've graduated from so some of them were pronounced [Music] [Music] [Music] so all right i just i said it okay i just want to let y'all know that they have loved everyone yeah it would take somebody like that to bring all of us together i remember one time here i am in in germany and i called there about a song i wanted him to appear to see he said in the battle but the organ power [Music] he wasn't playing the pm homeless dogs [Music] he said man don't you see all of these [Music] i just you would never have a dull moment if you've met there he was truly a man of god if i could say one thing about him in me closing that you all can please take a part of them in yourself if that means helping someone as little as an animal that you don't know takes something [Music] thank you [Applause] uh we have a slight addendum to the program um uh big john miller is not here today so it's called campbell available thank you good morning everybody uh my name is paul campbell and uh thank you to uh to ken for entrusting me and inviting me to come and speak today um he's also my fraternity brother also a fellow musician um one thing i would say about them to me is that you know pretty much as a musician and as you know speakers and performers and so you know sometimes when your talent is very much um on a professional level or you do it at the highest level sometimes people don't get to see you as a human being they see you as a performer as a musician and that [Music] you as a person um dale in the strangest of times in some of my darkest days uh dan was there for me and one of the scriptures that came to mind was proverbs 17 and 17 brother is says for a time of adversity and so dale was that for a lot of people um some of us experienced sickness some of us experienced loss it still had to go and perform but there was the one that would call you before and after just to check on you as a person to make sure you are okay um be able to you know at all times of the night make sure that you know that he was thinking about you and so those things are things that i feel like we can carry with us his consistency as a musician in our community one thing about bill we always knew was that he was gonna be on time he was gonna play that stack and it was gonna be live every single time [Music] but we really enjoyed our time and uh [Applause] this [Music] [Music] and i definitely mean it so thank you for this opportunity god bless you all [Applause] [Music] and thank you for the privilege to have the new man in jesus name amen to the angel of this house on behalf of the morning star baptist church and the smith family thank you so kindly opening this house for us to come today you are here thank you my brothers and sisters for being here to celebrate this [Music] to hear what the lord has in store for us from second timothy all right chapter number four i'm gonna read it to you here in verses six three foreign [Music] yes [Music] which the lord the righteous judge shall give me out of that day and not to me only but unto all them also that love is appearing let's read the word of the lord if you will allow me just for a few minutes i will talk about an honorable discharge [Applause] one of my good our friends leaders the mayor of the city [Applause] will tell you [Music] if [Music] 214. or as it's officially named the certificate of release or discharge from active duty is the official and permanent record of everything done in the service of the u.s armed forces everything everything about your military career is recorded on your db 2 14 your dd 214 tells when you went in when you got it tells whether you served outside of the united states or if you went even overseas all of the rhythms [Music] but out of all of the information listed on dd 2 14. the information in box 13. [Music] records the soldier's character it recalls every act while in service anything else on the bb 214 tells that you serve right but your character of service tells how [Music] it shows that you are faithful in carrying out your duties or were you familiar box 13 a tells if you were a sergeant your uh [Applause] on everybody everybody everybody wants an honorable discharge but unfortunately not everyone served earned an honorable discharge some some soldiers received a general discharge some others received what we call a big chicken death or bad discharge but some soldiers have served so shamefully that they are given a dishonorable discharge but this honorable discharge says you you was so representable that you not only forfeit your va benefits but in some cases you [Music] observer for the past 40 something years all right and as a really appointed official of the church oh my god [Music] [Applause] received [Applause] he honored his family he was proud of his wife and the fun that they had together but if you wanted to see him light up you wanted to see a sparkle in his eyes talk about music and the places he had been because of his music he rejoiced so much in the people he had met and his traveling throughout the world listen he left and cared for his family he gave them an example that hard work is its own reward they are living all over life i know somebody had some things dale was still so on sunday morning september 12th the lord the righteous judge called from heaven and said dale smith yeah discharged with erasmus is quoted as saying i am a victory have earned my discharge and must leave the fighting to younger men amen paul the age warrior of the cross is laying down his arms that timothy might take them up paul writes this letter to encourage timothy in second timothy chapter four the apostle paul is near to the end and he knows it he's sitting in the cold wet dungeon most of his companions have forsaken him and his last appeal has been denied but even in this horrible condition paul is not frustrated or afraid he does it right as one that regrets his decision to follow the law [Music] on the contrary paul is poor because he understands and he understood that to the [Music] paul understood that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of god and in order to receive his discharge his mortal lust [Music] and so as a conquering general paul wright for i am now ready to be offered in the time of my departure is at hand when when paul speaks of he is using the imagery of the old testament his offering was exclusively given to the lord [Music] yeah that you present your bodies as a living sacrifice holy and acceptable unto god which is your reasonable servant paul paul is saying my entire ministry was a sacrifice that was offered to god through serving men but these these last these last hours i'm pouring out everything to nobody but the lord paul was a fighter in one of the marching hymns of the church dr isaac watts road am i a soldier of the cross a follower of the lamb and shall i fear to own his cause of bless to speak his name must i be carried to the sky on fire while others fought to win the prize and sail through bloody sea contrary my brothers and sisters to popular belief the christian life is not all sunday school picnics it is a constant struggle against spiritual wickedness in high places [Music] when we join [Music] the fight has been between preachers and deacons but that wasn't the case with david his fight was not against flesh and blood but against principality against powers against the rulers of the darkness of this world his fight was with the death yeah dale didn't fight him with a gun there he had one [Music] you don't have to be violently aggressive [Music] but he didn't just fight he fought a good fight a good fight is a worthy worthy fight when you fight a good fight you don't concern yourself with trivial and insignificant affairs that really don't matter when you fight a good fight you fight within the rules of combat listen listen a good fight means this this you don't break the rules a good fight means that you are committed to doing the right things because it's the right thing to do dale dale got an honorable discharge because he was a fighter and then i got to tell you this there was a finish i believe the words fit in perfectly i have finished my course we all we all know people who started their christian journey as well live and enthusiasm with commitment but when trials and disappointments hit uh-huh they dropped off you know anybody like that i don't want to bless your buckle but some of [Music] is not working [Music] the things are not going your way down to the church come on sir come on sir you all know this yeah last year [Applause] [Music] dale knew how to pace himself i can't remember ever seeing [Applause] oh we live in a world of my brothers and sisters where everyone is striving to be famous but one of the few things that stood out about them was that he was striving to be faithful if he told me he was gonna do something he did he didn't quit i can remember sometimes many times when i get to the church when there was with us he played so many churches some of the pastors was a musician i give credit he started with me [Applause] i'll share something with you he would tell folks we could tell folks they asked him who's your pastor he said who the priest [Music] that's why dale had such a kind heart right i used to get on him after sunday school when he and my children and the rest of the children would be dismissed from sunday school and there was a place around the corner that got all my offering for sunday morning [Music] [Music] he was faithful in everything he did right he understood that the great calling and appointment on his life came from a great guard and said he believed that god created everything he believed that god died for our sins he believed that the death in christ shall rise first yeah family if you're not able to see it right now today is only a day of rejoicing we're saying farewell it's a day of celebration another soldier has made it home when i was talking to kim the other night so many words in her conversation to me she told me that dale got his healing friend i choose to rejoice in the fact that my friend is not suffering
