you standing with us through it all very much appreciate it all right church that's all i have let's do a bible study would you all take your bibles please and we're just going to pick it up right where we left off last week second samuel chapter 10 in case you're not familiar uh on wednesdays uh we go through verse by verse chapter by chapter and we just continue through all of the bible that way and when we're finished then we start all over again this is our fourth time through all of the bible and then over the weekend we delve into some section in it or near it and go deeper so this week we're in second samuel chapter 10. so let's pray lord we now just come to a place of receiving we open our heart we are just desiring the word to be alive in our lives to transform us to reveal to us your desire to bless our lives and to show us your heart and so god we want to receive we open our heart to you tonight in jesus name amen second samuel is really about the life of david and so far it's been really a remarkable story uh highlighting david's a heroic aspects his faith character in many ways that will come to a halt in the story but before we get to chapter 11 chapter 10 is really one of the highlights of again his military victories god promised him peace all around and last week we were seeing as he had defeated the philistines on the west down in the area we would call it today the gaza strip was actually where the philistines were headquartered and i mentioned this last night by the way and it bears repeating that the when you hear today the modern word palestinian we we see this in the news much the palestinian arabs the palestinian people the palestinian authority what does it actually mean well it's referring to the area the whole of the area of israel and that area around the jordan and the sea of galilee dead sea all of that is referred to as palestine where does it get that name well it was named that by the romans in in the second century they named it after the mortal enemy of the jews which was the philistines which we are now studying here so they thought i know how to offend the jews let's name it after the philistines after their enemies and and so they then changed the name of jerusalem to capitalina and uh the temple mount at this time was clear to the temple and so he built a temple for jupiter on the temple mount and uh just a tragedy of tragedies and so this was rome trying to incite the jews into anger and thus they renamed the area palestine and it has remained uh with that name to this day so when you think of people that are called palestinians it's really referring to the area they're actually arabs all right that was all part of the class last night anyway he had defeated the philistines to the west uh and to the north also and to the south and uh and now also to the east as we're going to see in chapter 10. verse one it happened afterward that the king of the ammonites died now uh the ammonites would be directly to the east on the other side of the jordan and in fact when you go to jordan today uh we when we were there just on our last trip to israel we went to jordan and uh and we went to amman which is the capital of jordan and it's the same name right amman from the ammonites so it's interesting how modern names have their roots right out of the bible times so it happened that the king of the ammonites died and hanun his son became king in his place now david said to david said i will show kindness to hanun the son of nahash just as his father show kindness to me now we don't know exactly what kindness that was or when that happened but surely he did and so david had a good relationship to his father and so he died so david sent some of his servants to console the son concerning his father but when david's servants came to the land of the ammonites the princes of the ammonites said to how noon their lord do you think that david is honoring your father because he sent consulars to you no david has not sent his servants to you in order to excuse me has david not sent his servants to you in order to search out the city to spy it out and overthrow it now this is just bad advice uh be very careful of the counselors that you listen to this is bad advice so hanun took david's servants shaved off half of their beards and then cut off their garments in the middle as far as their hips and sent them away this is just complete humiliation for a jew to have his beard cut off is one thing of humiliation but to have it cut off in half this is this is nothing short of inciting this is designed to incite david and this is going to end in war and he knows it so when it was told verse 5 to david he sent to meet them for the men were greatly humiliated and the king said to them now stay in jericho until your beards grow and then you can return david has compassion and kindness to them stay here in jericho let your beards go then come now when the sons of oman saw that they had become odious to david oh like that's a surprise they did then on purpose the sons of oman then sent and hired the arameans this would be right to the to the north there of israel the arameans of bethlehem are remains of zoba twenty thousand foot soldiers and the king of maaka with a thousand men and the men of tobe with twelve thousand men when david heard that he sent joab and all of his army his mighty men we're going to read about david's mighty men david's got special forces and these are are mighty men they're not just special forces they're they're mighty men of the spirit as well as mighty men of war they are special forces in the spirit that just is an intriguing thought to me what does it mean you know to be mighty men not only of war but of the spirit that's really fascinating we'll study that very soon and then the sons of amman then came out drew up in battle array at the entrance of the city while the aramaians of zoba and rehob and the minitobe and ma'aka were by themselves in the field so now when joab saw that the battle was set against him in the front and in the rear then he selected from all the choice the choice men of israel and arrayed them against the arameans special forces go to the arameans but the remainder of the people he placed in the hand of abhishei his brother and he had raid them against the sons of oman in the city and he said to his brother now if the arameans are too strong for me then you shall help me but if the sons of oman are too strong for you then i will come and help you be strong now and let us show ourselves courageous for the sake of our people and for the the cities of our god and may the lord jehovah do what is good in his sight so joab and the people who were with him drew near to the battle against the arameans and they fled they fled they they fled before israel when the sons of oman saw that their means fled well then they fled also they fled before abhishe and entered the city then joab returned from fighting against the sons of imam and came to jerusalem when the aramians saw that they had been defeated by israel they gathered themselves together and had these are sent and brought out the armenians who were beyond the river the euphrates north and east and they came to halam and shobha the commander of the army of hadidiser led them now when he was told david he gathered all israel together across the jordan came to halam and the arameans arrayed themselves to meet david and fought against him but the arameans fled before israel and david killed 700 charioteers of the aramaians forty thousand horsemen struck down shobak the commander of their army and he died there when all the kings servants of hadith saw that they were defeated by israel they made peace with israel and served them so the arameans feared to help the sons of ammon anymore there's peace one last city to fall is rabbah which we're going to see chapter 11 verse 1 came about in the spring by the way david's victories west north south east are such that he has brought now the greatest influence militarily of israel maintained by solomon but never will they ever again have the dominance in that area that they have now seen under david the promise of god being fulfilled chapter 11 brings us then to a complete change of theme in david's life up to this point he's been a hero up to this point he's been a man of faith someone to really learn lessons from as an example to follow but no more because now all of that comes to a screeching halt when david is going to make tragic tragic decisions chapter 11 and verse 1. it happened in the spring at the time when kings go out to battle that david sent joab his commander and his servants with him and all israel and they destroyed the sons of oman and besieged the rabbah which we just had read about but david stayed in jerusalem now as i mentioned over the weekend when it says in the spring when kings go out to war means it was well known at the time that the winters were far too difficult to move armies horses did not do well in the mud chariots didn't do well in the mud soldiers didn't either so it was just an assumed thing every all the nations knew you took the winters off and so they just did not fight in the winter interestingly my son who was uh deployed in afghanistan twice and my son-in-law um related that it was actually true there also that all of the fighting just went down to almost nothing during the winter so it's actually a fairly common thing today as well nevertheless in the spring when kings go out to war it says that david stayed in jerusalem which gives us a hint that something is amiss in the story now when the evening came david arose from his bed and walked around on the roof of the king's house so how wonderful is this now he has a commander to go out and lead his forces he doesn't have to fight he has now time to have a nice nap in the afternoon i mean this is luxury to have a nap in the afternoon i don't know about you but i love naps in the afternoon they are just so refreshing and uh you know especially i i got to tell you sunday afternoon naps is a tradition in my house like okay everybody knows dad's going to take a sunday afternoon nap it's like yes i love a sunday afternoon and it's a luxury right and so david things are good see this is this is a very important understanding there's a dangerous point that comes when everything's good it's like bills are paid uh some money's in the bank uh you know got a good job things are good do you know life's kind of good right now and and that's when people kind of sit back on their heels they kind of start taking it easy they kind of start thinking you know this is all right i'm kind of i'm all right that's a dangerous point david arose walked around on the roof of his house very common in israel to have flat roofs little parapet walls and they would go up in the cool of the evening walk about david was the king he had a very large house very high we assume high roof and i've been there at the city of david and uh and you can look down because of the hilly nature of the of the place where he set him his house you can go up on the roof and really frankly you can look down on the city of david all about you can pretty much see the whole of the city so david had a good view and it tells us that david walking around on the roof of his house from the roof saw a woman bathing and the woman was beautiful in appearance now the hebrew word here bathing is literally the word washing and typically it has an uh object in other words washing one's feet or uh washing oneself but it doesn't say what she's washing it just says that she's washing it could be that she's bathing but to be bathing outside naked would would be quite provocative and i suggest to you that that we should not start casting aspersions here on bathsheba i do not believe that we should cast shadows at bathsheba um it just says that she was washing she could have been washing her clothes we don't know what she was washing but she was just washing and i don't believe that she would be outside on the roof of her house naked so but she was beautiful and david could see that so that's enough for the story david then sent and inquired of the woman and so in other words he sent messengers who is that woman that lives it right there what david from there by the way would have an excellent he could see quite clearly it could be from here to that wall even and who is that woman that lives in that house right over there so someone went and asked inquired and said is this not bathsheba daughter of eliam the wife of uriah the hittite and as i said on the weekend when he heard that answer that should have put an end to it right there as soon as he heard the wife of that should have been enough to end the whole thing but then you add to it it says the daughter of the daughter of eliam who happens to be one of david's senior counselors and this by the way will come to haunt david this will bite david this elian will not let this go and so is this not the daughter of eliam the wife of uriah the hittite so david sent messengers and took her when she came to him he lay with her now i'm going to suggest that this is all on david and i'm going to suggest that this is an abuse of his position as king he is a very very powerful man in israel and bathsheba uh i and i will demonstrate this from the story loves her husband but now she is set in a very difficult predicament for she has now been called by the king and now she is alone with the king who is making advances and so this is a a a an abuse of his power and his authority to push this and so she relents and he lays with her so when she had purified herself from her uncleanness she then returned to her house the woman then conceived and sent and told david and said i am pregnant now this is very very bad and it's going to get even worse david has made a tragic decision now by the way it's interesting i um you know i like to read commentaries of uh jewish rabbis just to see you know i'd like to see oftentimes you know how the jewish rabbis see these various verses and perspectives from the old testament i was quite amazed i will tell you that there are many jewish rabbis who hold that when uriah the hittite went to war that in fact all of the soldiers who went to war gave their wives a conditional divorce before they left for war and you say what i've never heard of a conditional divorce what does that mean you're right i've never heard of it either that's the first time i've heard of such a thing and the idea was if they died in battle then the the divorce that they issued to them would then take effect you say well why do i need a divorce my husband has died i can remarry now but according to the hebrew tradition if the woman died if the man died and the woman had no son then the woman would be given to the brother and so as to prevent such a thing he would give her a divorce yeah i don't understand it either why would they say this they're trying to protect david they're trying to make it as such that david didn't have an affair i'm sorry david had an affair anybody understand what i'm saying here let's just call it as it is this is a tragic decision of epic proportions anybody agreeing with me here and this is important because people make tragic decisions of epic proportions today and the the consequences we we have to recognize that that god is going to speak here of grace yes but he's also going to speak to discipline and consequences and therefore it's nothing to be trifled with sin is not to be trifled with anybody want to agree with me because it will come back in tremendous consequence and so this is part of the story so she says to david through a messenger i am pregnant so then david said to joab said send me uriah the hittite so job sent you right to david and his plan he's got to come up with a plan and his idea now is to bring uriah from the field right and somehow get your riot to sleep with his wife and thus when she's found out to be pregnant well there's a perfectly good explanation because her husband came back so when uriah came to him david asked concerning the welfare of joab and the people and the state of the war because he's again he's not wanting to let on that there's a ulterior motive here so then david then said to uriah go down to your house wash your feet same word wash there by the way go down to your house wash your feet and the idea is let your wife wash your feet and you know with your wife so then uriah verse 8 went out of the king's house and the present from the king was sent out after him this is an interesting thing because the man didn't go down to his house and so bathsheba receives a present what's this but uriah slept at the door of the king's house with all of the servants of his lord and did not go down to his house in other words this man has character now when they told david uriah did not go down to his house david then called uriah and said to him have you not come from a journey why did you not go down to your house david is befuddled at this why did you not do this so uriah said to him and as i mentioned on the weekend this is a this is a speech of character this is a powerful speech where he says the ark and israel and judah are staying in temporary shelters and my lord joab and the servants of my lord are camping in the open field shall i then go to my house to eat and drink and lie with my wife by your life and the life of your soul i would not do such a thing i mean this is character this man's got some integrity here what do you do with this by the way on a side note jewish rabbis further state that this speech which i suggest to you is filled with amazing character would anybody agree with me this is this is like character right jewish rabbis suggest that this is not a speech of character but rather it is betrayal worthy of death you see i i know i have the same look what how could you read it that way let me read it again uriah then said the ark of and israel and judah are staying in temporary shelters and my lord joab and that's where they accuse him he he called joab his lord and not david that's that's that's betrayal worthy of death they would ought to sentence him to death on the spot i'm sorry i think this is far too much this the the scripture is straightforward david is about to make a tragic decision again and so it goes on uriah then said i would not do this thing verse 12 then uriah david said to uriah stay here today also and tomorrow i will let you go so uriah remained in jerusalem that day in the next david called him again and he ate and he drank and he made him drunk the idea is he surely is not going to have such integrity if he's drunk but in the evening he went out to lie on his bed with the lord's servants and he would not go down to his house the man's got integrity even when he's drunk this is an amazing man it came about in the morning that then david hatches another plan and it's the worst plan of all he wrote a letter to job and sent that letter by the hand of uriah uriah is going to carry this letter and it is a death sentence he had written in the letter place your right in the front of the fiercest battle withdraw from him so that he may be struck down and die so joab knows now that this is on purpose so it was as joab kept watching the city that he put uriah at the place where he knew that they were valued men and the men of the city went out fought against joab and some of the people among david's servants fell and uriah the hittite also died then david excuse me joab sent and reported to david all the events of the war and he charged the messenger saying now when you have finished telling all the events of the words of the king and if it happens that the king's wrath rises and he says to you why did you go so near to the city to fight did you not know that they would shoot from the wall and then he'll bring up this example he'll say who struck down abimelech the son of jeruba chef did not a woman throw an upper millstone on him from the wall that he died at the best why did you go near the wall then you shall say to him your servant uriah the headside is also dead so the messenger departed and came and reported to david all that joab has sent him to tell and the messenger said to david the men prevailed against us came out against us in the field and we pressed them as far as the entrance of the gate moreover the archers shot at your servants from the wall so that some of the king's servants are dead and your servant uriah the hittite is also dead then david said to the messengers thus you shall say to joab do not let this thing displease you would you notice the cavalierness of david's response do not let this thing displease you for the sword devours one as well as another make the battle against the city stronger and overthrow it and so encourage him with these words now when the wife of uriah heard that uriah her husband was dead but you notice by the way how he is her husband right because she is her husband she mourned when she heard it she mourned and when the time of morning was over david sent and brought her to his house and she became his wife then she bore him a son but the thing that david had done was evil in the sight of the lord it was displeasing in the sight of the lord chapter 12 verse 1 then the lord sent nathan to david and he came to him and he said to david he's going to use a story of a of a lamb david was a shepherd you know and so nathan uses the story of a lamb and it gets david's attention so nathan comes to him does not directly confront him thus says the lord you have sinned no he uses this story very powerful you know the lord uses uh in the in the new testament the lord jesus uses many stories as a as a picture of the strong points of his word so he uses this one there were two men in one city one was rich the other was poor the rich man had many flocks and hurts but the poor man had nothing except one little you lamb which he bought and he nourished and they grew up together with him and his children he would eat of his bread and drink of his cup and line his bosom in other words this is a pet lamb living in the house not even living in the in the pasture or with the other sheep no he's in the house he's eating bread from his hand he's drinking from his cup he's lying in his bosom he's like he's sleeping on the bed you know like your dog loves to sleep on your bed it's the same idea at night time they go to bed the little land would jump up on the bed you know and do little circles and lie down i don't know if that's true but you know it's fun to imagine that and it says and the little you lamb was like a daughter to him now a traveler came to the rich man and he was unwilling to take from his own flock and from his own herd to prepare for the wayfarer who had come to him so rather he took the poor man's you lamb and prepared it for the man who had come to him now this is like david is incensed he thinks this is a real thing because it was very common for kings to be the rulers of judgments uh you know in cases of someone harming another very common so david thinks he's ruling on a case and this is a tragic story like how dare why do you the man was wealthy he had all kinds of sheep he could have just taken any of them and no the one that was sleeping on the man's bed eating from his bread and drinking from his cup david is furious david verse 5 david's anger burned greatly against that man and he said to nathan as the lord lives which is a strong way of saying as the lord of israel lives surely this man who has done this thing deserves to die and he must make restitution for the lamb fourfold which was according to the law because he did this thing and he had no compassion verse seven is famous nathan deadsended then said to david you are the man the man is you can you just imagine that moment right there after the story david put his self in this like how dare you how dare you do such a thing to this man who did how dare you do such a thing to take the one you lamb so precious to him and take it for dinner like it meant everything to him but it meant nothing to you and then nathan says you are the man which suggests to me the story suggests to me that uriah loved bathsheba and uriah was a man of character and meant a tremendous integrity and bathsheba meant everything to him but bathsheba was just another just another evening with a woman didn't mean much but to uriah she meant everything and so i suggest that it reveals something of the character of the story you are the man for thus says the lord god of israel now listen to what god's response is because it really helps us because it puts everything in its perspective that's one of the things god is doing here to put the thing in his right perspective i want you to see it rightly which is what the story does and now god's going to add to the perspective and i suggest to you that this is important because if we could see sin from the right view the right perspective it would change how we see it i remember i was witnessing to a fellow and uh and uh i was this is back when i was in bible college and i was in the restaurant business and i would i was serving tables and before customers would come in we were setting you know setting tables and uh just chit chatting you know and uh so a fellow says to me i suppose you would like to know my view of god of course he knew i was a christian see he knew i was going to bible college to be a pastor and so he felt compelled that he must tell me and so he said i suppose you would like to know my view of god i said well yes and he says well i have an objection and i said please tell me and he said my objection is hell i said i please explain and by the way i find this to be a very helpful way of interacting with people just like please explain to me i would like to know your view of things and then of course when you're finished i'll like to explain to you some things but please speak about this and he says it just doesn't seem doesn't seem fair do you okay so a person spends their life and they do sinful things and then they're gonna eternity it doesn't seem fair to me i said you know what i i understand what you're trying to say but may i suggest a different way to see it he said well okay sure well the reason why you say such a thing is because you see it on this side you see it from this perspective but i suggest to you that if there is a god in heaven that he is just and he is right anybody agree with me if there's a god in heaven he's just and what he does is just because he is just i suggest to you that when you see god you will see him in all of his holiness in all of his grandeur and all of his righteousness and i suggest to you that you will therefore see your sin from that perspective against the backdrop of god's holiness and when you see your sin against the backdrop of god's holiness i suggest to you that you will have no more complaints and in fact when you're on the other side of the thing i'm convinced that you will say to god you are righteous and just all together because you are seeing it from a limited view but when you see god as he is as he has revealed himself to be i suggest that you'll have a different perspective his answer was you know what i i've never heard such a great explanation of hell thank you for that i said and and i'm not going to change i choose hell broke my heart to hear that back to the story perspective verse 8 i gave you oh excuse me verse 7 it is i who anointed you i gave i anointed you king over israel it is i who delivered you from the hand of saul i gave you your master's house and your master's wives into your care and what does that mean it's very it was a common thing in those days for when the king died that the entirety of his estate and all of his wives and everything the whole haram and everything would be transferred to the new king now this david actually had uh control over all of saul's property which therefore was given to him he gave it to mephibosheth which we looked at last week he had all of the he only had one wife on one concubine given to david but david never took these wives to himself but he cared for them and never took them for himself nevertheless i gave you the house of israel i gave you judah and if that was too little i would have added more things like these why have you despised the word of the lord by doing this evil in his sight see the perspective there i have done all of this for you and if that was too little i would have done even more than that for you but now you've done this it's going to change the nature of our relationship now i must bring the discipline and the consequences so why have you despised the word of the lord by doing evil in his sight the word despised the word means to cast it down you did not esteem it you did not respect the word of the lord you did not hold it in esteem you you set it down you despised it and this is what happens many people today do the same thing that's why the perspective how you see god's word is very important to see it with authority to see it high to see it as a a a speaking of god's heart to you so why have you despised the word by doing this evil you have struck down uriah the hittite with the sword and have taken his wife to be your wife and have killed them with the sword of the sons of ammon now therefore the sword shall never depart from your house because you have despised me and have taken the wife of uriah the hittite to be your wife thus says the lord behold i will raise up adversities the word there evil difficulty adversity against you from your own house his son absalom by the way will rise up against him and take the throne from david temporarily and i will even take your wives before your eyes and give them to your companion absalom and son he shall lie with your wives in broad daylight that happened it was a tragedy indeed you did it secretly i will do this thing before all israel and under the sun then david said to nathan i have sinned i have sinned against the lord and nathan said to david the lord has taken away your sin you shall not die however because by this deed you have given occasion to the enemies of the lord to blaspheme the child that is born to you shall surely die and nathan went to his house nathan was his friend by the way would you do me this favor would you turn in your bibles to psalm 51. psalm 51 we must read here at this point because david wrote it in response to his sin and it really must be seen in his right perspective psalm 51 please turn there reading from verse 1 be gracious to me o god according to your loving kindness be gracious to me according to the greatness of your compassion blot out my transgressions wash me thoroughly from my iniquity cleanse me from my sin for i know my transgressions and my sin it's ever before me i cannot stop thinking of it in other words david couldn't sleep he was angry there was so much uh he was anxious in a soul he just grieved in his soul all groaning all day long he says in psalm 32 and if you've ever been there if you've ever done a tragic tragic thing in your life you know the anguish of the soul a soul that is sick because of a terrible decision is terribly in anguish no show of hands please but i have a feeling that if we did ask for a show of hands a lot of people would say i know that anguish i know that one i experienced it myself and the the hope is that god see god puts a hand that's heavy so that a person would own it repent from it the scripture says there's there is a sorrow that's good because it brings a person to repentance the day that a person owns it david finally comes to the place where he owns it i have sinned against the lord that's a glorious day because that's the day that healing can begin and god can begin to restore a person and this is so important because i tell you there have been many people who have made tragic decisions and i can tell you why because their soul was sick within them but one of the things that we do to help people restore their lives is to rebuild their soul to draw them into a relationship to the living god but it starts with confession it starts with acknowledging he says my sin was ever before me notice against you and you only verse 4 have i sinned and done evil what is in your sight so that you're justified when you speak and you're blameless when you judge i'm still in psalm 51. behold i was brought forth in iniquity in sin my mother conceived me behold you desire truth in the innermost being i love that phrase you desire truth in the innermost being that's what god wants to see in us oh i tell you what when there's a work of god when there's truth in the innermost being when a person is living in the spirit of truth in their lives there's something so beautiful it's a beautiful way of living anybody want to agree with me it's so much better that the anxious and the anguish of the soul when a person's a sin is be always before them you desire truth in the innermost being and in the hidden part you will make me no wisdom purify me with hyssop and i will be clean wash me i will be whiter than snow make me hear joy and gladness let the bones which you have broken rejoice hide your face from my sins blot out my iniquities create in me a clean heart what a prayer creating me a clean heart we had one of the famous worship songs from the church from years past was based on this anybody remember it created me a clean heart i won't sing it renew a steadfast spirit renew i said i had a steadfast spirit renew that spirit within me don't cast me away from your presence don't take your holy spirit from me by the way when we sing this in the modern we should not include those words because frankly those words don't apply to us god has made a promise to you and to me that the holy spirit will not be taken god will not do that he will not cast this away he will not reject us he will not depart from us i'll never leave you nor forsake you now if we need discipline he will discipline us that is for sure one evidence that he's our father but he'll never ever cast you off this is very important because many people are very very wrong when it comes to their view of god many people think that if they make a tragic error they have a sin of some kind that god cast them off be gone i am done with thee because you have you know offended with your sin no god loves you so much that he will never cast you off that he'll never leave you nor forsake you and he will not relent until he has put his hand on your life because he loves you you are an adopted son or daughter now and he's not going to walk away from this relationship and he is going to be like the hound of heaven he is going to be pursuing you until you finally give up and come back to the lord be a prodigal son coming back to the lord that is a beautiful day when a person turns around and says i'm going home amen it's a beautiful day when a person says i'm going home i know where help comes from i know where hope is and i want to go home so this is david renew a steadfast spirit verse 12 rejoice renew restore to me the joy of my salvation restore to me the joy of your salvation man when you're right with god and there's joy in the spirit a deep residing joy is beautiful sustain me with a willing spirit and i will teach transgressors your way and sinners will be converted to you isn't that an amazing thing david knows that once he has been restored that god would use him to have a voice to speak to sinners and sinners will be converted to you now i love that because i can relate to that when i was in my early 20s i i will just tell you i made some tragic decisions on my own not of those proportions but i made tragic decisions and my soul was deeply troubled deeply deeply troubled to the point that i i mentioned this before but i remember when i was in my early 20s looking in the mirror and i did not like the person i saw i did not respect the person that i saw in that mirror but i knew where help comes from and i called out to god help me restore to me renew in me this this spirit i know where help is restore it to me god and i felt that word of the lord you walk with me one day at a time you walk with me and i will restore your life you walk with me and i'll rebuild your life i will tell you i was a sinner i was a sinner i was a sinner and i was a sinner and i'm so thankful that god did not quit god never gave up on me and god restored me and god allowed me now to speak to you and to invite sinners to come back to a relationship the living god because he didn't cast me off he's not going to cast you off either amen let's give the little praise it's important for me to say that because there are people in anguish even today and i tell you i am believing god for a work of revival of restoring that god is doing a work of drawing a church a people into a place of nearness to god i am praying for revival i want to see revival in this place and revival means that we have a relationship to the living god that we desire the nearness of god that we desire the work of god in our lives that it is true and it's authentic and we're not playing games we mean it we want revival and we want god in our lives anybody else let's give the lord praise amen so back to uh ii samuel the lord struck verse 15 the child that you rise would abort to david and he was sick so david therefore inquired of the lord for the child in other words he's interceding and he's praying and he fasted and he went and he lay all night on the ground now god has already said to him that the boy is going to die but david is like appealing just crying out ah please please please god and he's fasting and so the elders of his house stood beside him in order to raise him up from the ground but he was unwilling and he would not eat food with them it happened on the seventh day david did not eat for seven days it happened on the seventh day that the child died and the servants of david were afraid to tell him that the child was dead for they said behold while the child was still alive we spoke and he did not listen to our voice how then can we tell him that the child is dead he might harm himself his grief will be so uh deep but when david saw his servants whispering david perceived that the child was dead and he said to his servants is the child dead and they said yes he is dead so david arose from the ground washed anointed himself changed his clothes came into the house of the lord and worshiped first thing he did he washed changed his clothes went into the house of the lord and he worshipped then he came to his own house and when requested they set food before many ate then a servant said to him what is this thing that you have done while the child was alive you fasted and wept but when the child died you arose in eight then he said well the child was still alive i fasted and i wept for i said who knows the lord may be gracious to me that the child may live who knows what god might do in other words he was appealing to the mercy of god who knows but now that he's dead why should i fast can i bring him back again no i will go to him but he will not return to me now that right there is tremendously helpful by the way when a child dies this is one of the places i go to to encourage parents to know that god receives that child to himself there's a great book written some years ago called i'll hold you in heaven about when a child dies and then the parents wonder what the child was too young to even make a confession of christ what happens to this child and this is a tremendous encouragement i will go to him i will see him again and when my own daughter died oh did i ever rejoice in this great truth i will see her again but he will not return to me but then we got to end with this then david comforted his wife bathsheba notice now she is called his wife and he went into her and lay with her and she gave birth to a son and he named him solomon the name solomon you can see the word shalom which means peace [Music] he is a man of peace now the lord loved him and sent word through nathan the prophet and the lord named him the lord gave him a name now david gave him the name solomon but then through the prophet nathan god said i give him another name this is a name i give him this is my own personal name for the boy you name him jedediah for the sake of the lord it means beloved of the lord i love the way this story finishes for it is absolutely amazing grace first of all out of this relationship that started so wrongfully so sinfully out of this will come the next great king of israel solomon this is nothing short of grace and then that god would give him a name jedediah is nothing short of astounding and it shouts to the heavens that god's grace is still amazing i don't know about you but i'm very thankful for that because not only does god restore sinners god pours his grace on those sinners and could even use them to make an impact even though they have this in their past this is important because many people have tragic stories of sinful pasts and many people think that because of those tragic stories of their past that god can never use them again but i'm here to tell you that god's grace is still amazing and that god is not finished with you and god will still have purpose and meaning and mission in your life even if you have had tragic things you've done in the past god is not finished with you yet amen let's give the lord praise and glory amen father we are so thankful for this story because we can so relate to the story because god we we're so thankful that first of all you don't cast us off you don't relent you steadfastly pursue that we might return to the lord and return to be restored and renewed let there be a steadfast spirit within us let there be a renewing let there be a revival every single person in this room has some sin in their lives and every person needs to hear that god restores and renews and rebuilds the lives of sinners and we are very very thankful for that and we're also thankful for your amazing grace seen here that the out of this tragedy would be born one of the greatest kings of israel god we are amazed at your grace and that you then would give him your own personal name jedediah of the lord oh how beautiful is that we need to be reminded again for you put that same word on any sinner who would come and be restored and renewed you would call each one of them beloved of the lord church tonight as we are before the lord if you are in this place where god is saying to you i'm asking you to come home i'm asking you to turn your life around i am asking you to draw nearer to me for you're out there in the world too far you come nearer you draw to me i will rebuild i will not cast you off but i'll not relent either i will keep pursuing you turn around and come home and i will say the same word to you i love you and i will rebuild your life and i'll give you that same word you are the beloved of the lord church how many today just feel the holy spirit calling the holy spirit drawing come home you're too far come nearer come home come home come back john here would you was that you would you say it to the lord i want to just pray for you i want to just pray over you would you just raise your hand and just say that to the
