very welcome to the celebration of our eucharist today the very first thursday in our journey through lent and also the first thursday in this month we begin our celebration praying together in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen the grace and peace of our lord jesus christ the love of god our father and the communion of the holy spirit be with you all and with your spirit let's take a few moments entering into this celebration to acknowledge this constant fact and be aware of it that we come unworthy as sinners seeking what god gives in abundance his mercy and forgiveness you were sent to heal the contrite of heart lord have mercy lord have mercy you came to call sinners christ have mercy christ have mercy and you intercede for us with your father in heaven himself take up his cross daily and follow me for whoever would save his life will lose it whoever loses his life for my sake will save it for what does it profit a man if he gain the whole world and lose or profit himself the good news the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ my dear brothers and sisters every day thousands of moments in the day we are constantly choosing some of these choices are pretty insignificant we don't even think about them and then there are some which are very important they're life-changing and then there are others that are life determining and so the simple ones the perhaps insignificant ones to wake up when your alarm rings or just to lie in bed or maybe what to wear or maybe what to have for breakfast many of these go on all through the day and we don't even think about them and then as i said there are others that are life-changing what career to choose in life partner to choose in life perhaps a change of address or change of place or change in job these are very significant and then there are those that determine who we are again sometimes we don't even think about these choices that determine the kind of person i am and perhaps these are most significant and there are many and they happen all through the day to show an act of kindness to forgive someone to be gentle with another to visit an elderly person to let go of the past to make allowances for the mistakes of others these are choices i'm making or yes i'm angry but what do i do with that do i scream yell and use harsh words that's another choice or perhaps i'm driving and somebody cuts me up and i be roll the window down and scream and abuse that's another choice so there are choices that we are making that determine the kind of person i am talking of choices moses gives a very very strong reminder to the people he says you either choose god and his commandments and you live or you choose to disobey and you die wow that's scary but that's what he places before the people of israel there is no in-between road i can have a little bit of this and a little bit of that it's an either or you choose god you live you choose to go against him and his commandments you pay for it jesus in the gospel is not quite so dramatic as moses but is even deeper he starts with his own life he's made a choice and his choice is to live and walk the way of love no matter what he will love as the father loves with the generosity that has no calculations but there's a price he will have to pay rejection but he's willing to pay it because of love and so he says the son of man will be rejected will suffer but die but would be raised up and then he throws it open to his disciples and says you want to follow me you have a choice but if you want to follow me and if you're choosing me then like me take up your cross daily daily and follow me what would it profit you if you gain everything but you lose that which is essential your inner calm and peace your life but if you choose me you will find that inner calm and peace and life you might lose everything else how does this translate into our daily life i spoke of the choices that determine who we are in our reflection on ashwini's day yesterday we spoke of the journey of lent as rending the heart opening the heart tearing it open to make space to make room for god for significant the things that matter for god's loved ones the poor the widow the orphan the suffering so let's take the first one the very fact you have chosen to be here this morning at mass and you have chosen to follow mass online you've made a choice for god and that's quite significant it's determining who you are and so now through this day you are invited to keep making these choices to spend time in prayer a little time in prayer acknowledging god's presence in your life praising him thanking him seeking his strength and grace his forgiveness and his spirit to live this day that's a choice that's determining who you are for this choice we have to die to die to ourself our laziness our procrastination our excuse giving that's the dying take up your cross daily die to self so that god is first in my life or let's take the second to choose the significant things that matter true happiness determines who i am and so today maybe you'll be in you'll be challenged to at home amongst your family members to make allowances for the weakness of someone the mistakes of someone to overlook it and not make a big deal about it because we all make mistakes or maybe it's to show a little more kindness or maybe it's to spend a little more time or maybe it's [Music] to let go of something of the past these are simple but significant life-determining choices or maybe it's no i won't spend and overspend today or maybe i'll restrain myself from indulgence these are choices or maybe it's no i'll do today what i must do rather than putting it off for tomorrow significant choices for each of these i'm called to die to laziness to selfishness to the ego and in that dying the life of jesus is shining through i'm determining the kind of person i am and then as i said third aspect to make space to make room in our hearts for the suffering the poor the sick the elderly and maybe you can choose today to pray thinking of the suffering people in the ukraine spend a moment in quiet prayer praying that god may change the heart of leaders who have big egos and aren't able to let peace prevail or maybe pray for the suffering victims of this war or maybe you might as you begin this journey in land say i'll save a little money aside instead of spending it rashly i'll save it and perhaps at the end of the lent there'll be quite a bit accumulated i'll give it to an orphanage or i'll give it to a poor person and nobody will know about this that's a choice it determines who you are who i am so let's not panic about the whole season of lent let's take one day at a time what can i do today what choice can i make to let god occupy the seat of my heart what choice can i make for the things that matter which will determine the kind of person i am what choice can i make that will bring a smile and peace to a poor person for all of this we seek the grace of god who gives us his son jesus who comes to us in this eucharist that today we focus on a choice or choices that manifest who we are children of god brothers and sisters with jesus filled with god's spirit amen [Music] blessed are you lord god of all creation through your goodness we have this bread to offer which earth is given which human hands have made made become for us the bread of life blessed be god forever blessed are you lord god of all creation through your goodness we have this wine to offer fruit of the vine and work of human hands made become for us our spiritual drink blessed be god forever pray my dear brothers and sisters this your sacrifice and mind may be acceptable to god our heavenly and almighty eternal god through christ our lord for by your gracious gift each year your faithful await the sacred paschal feasts with joy of minds made pure so that eagerly intent on prayer and on the works of charity and participating in the mysteries by which they have been reborn they may be led to the fullness of grace that you bestow on your sons and daughters and so with all the angels and saints we praise you as with one voice we acclaim holy holy holy lord god of hosts heaven and earth are full of your glory hosanna in the highest blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord in the name of the lord hosanna i am the highest hosanna in the highest you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion jesus took bread and giving thanks broke it gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended jesus took the chalice once more giving thanks partaking of the body and the blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together
