conceive and bear a son and they shall name him emmanuel which means god is with us the gospel of the lord so how did i do you have to rehearse this one and well said this way sometimes if my pronunciation's not perfect you may not have noticed matthew structures the genealogy very deliberately in three sets of fourteen generations he leaves people out he emphasizes others and even if we do hear some of the names that don't always bring familiarity near the conclusion of the set of 14 in each group we hear important details about david becoming king of a unified israel about the deportation to babylon about the father of joseph so our ears perk up and we have a kind of a way of approaching the text what's the purpose of genealogy in the biblical setting to remind us that jesus has a lineage he's a real person jesus is a real person who has a lineage just like you and for and i do he didn't just fall from the sky without a context it's a consequence of the incarnation that he is born having relatives just like you and me here in our cathedral very the first window outside the sacristy on the top depicts the parents of mary and mary depicted as a very young girl so that is saint anne and saint joe came [Music] with their child mary and the names joachim and anne and everything that the tradition talks about regarding mary's birth you won't find it in the four gospels it comes from another gospel written in the first century that was not included in the canonical lists like matthew mark luke and john and this is a gospel that is known in scholarship as the proto-gospel of saint james so its attribution was to the apostle james that certainly would not stand up to scrutiny today but uh discerning even in the early centuries when the church heard it not everything in it resonated with what they believed to be true about the gospel and jesus that doesn't mean that the proto-gospel of saint james contains no truths but they are not of the level at the same as the canonical gospels of matthew mark luke and john but there in the proto-gospel of saint james is the details regarding mary's you can easily find it just google it you can read it in about 10 minutes i had to read it in the seminary it's most interesting the important thing i guess for us is you know when mary was born did anne and joakim did mary herself know everything that god had planned and laid out in his desire for her no they didn't it was revealed to mary the tradition is in ancient palestine that the age of betrothal for a female would have been about 15 years old so we can see the annunciation story mary being about that age when she becomes aware and she's taken aback by you know gabriel's announcement that god desires her to be the mother of god's only son so lying latent is she must learn this so upon her birth whatever way her parents understood her life to be a gift a blessing there was still much that was not known and in this way you know all of us contain kind of god's will within us whether we fulfill it whether we realize it whether we are obedient to it but god has a plan for you and for me that was revealed from the very moment of our conception and then at different stages in our life we are asked to know embrace but also given the freedom to reject even what god desired of us so today is a celebration of our faith a reminder that mary too was born into a context she is the recipient of a singular grace she is born without original sin in her immaculate conception but the point is she still has a context she still must learn how to please god in this broad sense she has to be taught her prayers she has to have a religious upbringing as well as a human upbringing just like every everyone here every every person has to have so there's something deeply human about today's feast we can lean on to the mother of god and saying help me lord in my family life help me in my marriage help me in my work help me in general because mary too had a context in which she was born that's good news so let's ask for the help of the mother of god today as we each in our own way seek to please and follow god's will for us invoking the intercession of the blessed virgin mary let us bring our needs and prayers to the lord for the church may her unity in christ shine brightly as an example of god's peace hospitality and love let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for those who hold political office may god bless their efforts in protecting life in all its stages let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for the gift of begotten son through her intercession hear our prayers which are made in faith through christ the lord blessed are you lord god of all creation for through your goodness we have received the bread we fruit of the vine and work of human hands it will become our spiritual drink pray my friends that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father as we celebrate with joy the forever and ever the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god and to praise bless and glorify your name on this feast day of the nativity of the blessed virgin mary for by the overshadowing of the holy spirit she conceived not it is going to happen this year i think the the the style of it is going to be more of an outdoor mass and then maybe after the mass don't quote me on this totally yet there might be access to the chapel especially for those who have never been inside the small chapel that's in the cemetery and that's better you know for covid and all that kind of stuff being outdoors so next wednesday there will be the usual 12 15 mass i'm celebrating it and then at you know around five maybe i got the time total a little bit off it could be five or five fifteen can't remember uh bishop dunn will be down at the cemetery and i could be joining him i think so i'll see you there but i just wanted to put that heads up now because so many of you enjoy it uh just to put it on your radar and i'll make
