Please note that this website is currently a work in progress! Lots of interesting data and statistics to come.
It would be easy to dump on this guy because he literally did almost everything wrong, however, he has a great DIY spirit and sometimes it's just fun to get out and try out all the methods you read on boards. That's just how you learn and get better at things. There's really no ONE way to deal with cast iron and it's why americans especially love cast iron; we like our sovereignty, tinkering, and doing shit our own way.
Also holy crap that bird was REALLY loud.
I've been thinking about starting a fun little cast iron use and care channel with maybe a more zen like approach (i.e. less talking more technique oriented).
You can totally use soap to wash cast iron.
baking soda? not enough metal for 'sacrificial anode'. also more current equals more heat. vinegar bath should not be pure vinegar, should be about a 50/50 vinegar water mix... and not for hours at a time. power tools? hammer on cast iron? flax for seasoning? oil dripping off? this guy is like an exhaustive list of things not to do to cast iron. Its like he doesn't actually know anything about cast iron at all. Thank god he doesn't own anything of any real value.
I believe this video can spark great discussion here. Using a hammer to chip away enamel? Please no. DIY electrolysis? yes! Re-seasoning process? WAAAY too much oil! Cleaning method? Great! Sand your seasoning to make it smooth? ... ... ...
Thoughts?
Great tips! I'm gonna subscribe for sure!
