cyber school this is a very special day in zion a day to worship the lord our victor let's continue to stay with jesus as my sister earlier said a lot of things is happening around us today we are aware of it so the best thing for us to do is to stick to jesus christ our hope and our victor we all are soldiers in a spiritual warfare against sin the greatest controversy ever fought between christ and his followers and satan and his host the battle is is between good and evil between right and wrong righteousness and justice is on the one side are contesting with wickedness and corruption on the other every individual upon this earth is a participant in this war no one can stand on neutral ground and say i refuse to join the conflict if we are not on the side of christ we are in the ranks of the enemy he is not with me he who is not with me is against me so bear in mind brothers and sisters the words that if you are not with christ we are against him we are with the enemy and in our daily walk let us pray and continue to strive for the master knowing that jesus is able is capable to devel to deliver us from all evil no matter what the enemy chose us god is able and capable to deliver us so let us stay faithful and strong until he comes to take us home to glory have a blessed sabbath day welcome welcome welcome oh i know turn over to the lesson study good morning brothers and sisters a pleasant welcome to you a pleasant sabbath to you all uh for those who are here in the house and for those who are there watching online we welcome you and we hope that as we go through our lesson or review our lesson i should say you should have done it before we're gonna reveal this and i hope we'll you know get uh a little more information and which will help us to have a better relationship with christ you know when i watch sabbath school on other media i realized that they go for one hour but i realize i have only about 23 minutes so i have to try and condense things so i'll be going a little bit you know i may not be going in all the details but i'll try my best by god's grace to bring out the eye points that we need to get all right so as we look at this lesson let us go ahead so that holy spirit can be our guide and our teacher heavenly father we thank you for this year's sabbath day we thank you for your words of life your words of hope your words of inspiration as we open your words now we ask your holy spirit to imbue your mind in your thoughts so that we'll have a better understanding of your words and not only a better understanding but also have a better relationship with you in jesus name may pray amen so the topic for our lesson of this quarter is resting or rest in christ and the topic we look at this week is longing for more now when i look at the topic and longing for more what is it saying to me i i try to figure it out by just looking at the topic longing for more more of what i hear some folks say longing for what more about rest what life have to offer okay i would encapsulate it by saying longing for more rest in christ and we will see it as we go through the lesson now the lesson is filled with types and models and scales and symbols just to give us a better understanding of you know god of his word so that we can have that closer relationship with him now he tells us of the this uh museum in new york where you have the entire city on [Music] uh being drawn there and you can go and look at it and it tells you that it's drawn to scale of 1 to thousand two hundred now uh a replica is not the original it is not the real thing but it gives you an idea of what the real thing is now uh first time you know in the older days brother eddie when we're traveling we used to use maps right and now we use google or you know the gps system but what those maps were they give you an idea of the location that you are going to right it's not the exact location that is in the map but the map shows you how to get to the location you follow what i'm saying so what we are looking at now is the sign symbols of how we are gonna get to that rest that final rest rest in jesus now we look at baptized in moses and i'm trying to understand it myself baptizing to moses why would i want to be baptized into moses and as i look at the lesson i realized that moses is a type of christ remember we said that the lesson is dealing with types examples symbols so moses is a type of christ now why is moses a type of christ why would you refer to moses as a type of christ no crisis or redeemer am i right christ comes to redeem us from sin now god's people the children of israel they were in captivity in egypt and so they needed a deliverer and moses was the one that was chosen to be the deliverable we can look at that in the book of exodus exodus chapter one to about four or two about five we'll see that because you know that the children of israel uh there was a famine in the land and they had to go to egypt to get food and they stayed there in the land of goshen for about 400 years and where the new king came that didn't know joseph he decided that look man these people are outnumbering us so we need to do something about that you know so they try to uh you know decrease the population by throwing all the boy babies into the river but god preserved moses and the uh the amazing thing about it is that the deliverer who was supposed to be thrown away grew up in the king's palace you know what i'm saying the the main one that was supposed to be thrown away in the river [Music] was the one who grew up in the palace can you imagine and to be the deliverer of god's people now as i read last night and i was reading the book of exodus chapter five we see where the king pharaoh he he he was such a a hard king man you know um he said look normally we would bring you the straw so that you made bricks he said look i'm not gonna bring it any store anymore you have to go find your own straw now look at it also he said that even though you have to go find your own straw so i'm told to keep in the middle i'm a guy who walk all over the place you know it's a little bit difficult but i'll try um yeah so even though they were to find their own straw they were to make the same amount of bricks that they used to make when they were getting the straw so you realize that pharaoh made it harder for them and so god's people need deliverance and god use moses to deliver his people and so we see moses as a type of christ now if we look at the book first corinthians chapter 10 i'm not gonna read the entire passage i'll just read some of it first corinthians chapter 10 verses 1 to 11. uh i'll read a few it says moreover brethren i would not that he should be ignorant how that all our fathers were under the cloud and all passed through the sea and were all baptized onto moses in the cloud and in the sea and v and did all eat the same spiritual meat and did all drink the same spiritual drink for the drunk of the spiritual rock that flowed or that followed them and that rock was christ jesus but with many of them god was not well pleased for they were overthrown in the wilderness i just want to focus here on the rock christ jesus you know when they drank from the rock as we're talking about types again that rock represents ooh jesus jesus is the rock on christ the solid rock i stand no all other ground is sinking sand so jesus represented or the rock represented jesus and when they drank they were partaking with jesus okay now we look also at spiritual food and i know i could get in a little bit of trouble with this but um the children of israel were in the land of egypt for a long time and they got accustomed to the flesh parts of egypt now they were in the wilderness and they were given manna which some of us called heavenly food and they were complaining man everyday manner for 40 years morning afternoon and evening manners seven days a week i am tired of this manner just give me back the food i had in egypt you know um i i i sometimes i wonder because in in in our country here there are children there are youth who will eat pasta three times a day seven days a week you know for the entire year and not get tired of it but here god's people were getting heavenly food and they were complaining now i want you to see a little parallel here it's not in the lesson but i'm just going to give you a little parallel so that you can you know you know you can be something in mind now realize egypt represents what the world right and um canaan represents the promised land which we finally will go now the wilderness is when we are separated from the world you follow what i'm saying so you notice that when god's people were separated from the world they did not eat like the world they did not eat the same food that the world eat they did not dress like the world because they couldn't buy the same thing that were because they were in the wilderness you follow what i'm saying and brothers and sisters it's going to happen to you and i when the mark of the beast is enforced we are going to be in the wilderness and we have to eat god's food not eat the fleshy parts of egypt you follow what i'm saying so bear these things in mind as i said the lesson is just giving us a a model a type and these things are to come some i've gone through already but some are to come so um just like to read something here before we move on it says we also look at the the heavenly sanctuary that god gave moses and the heavenly santa was a replica a pattern of what was in the or what is in the heavenly sanctuary so and remember what we said a replica is not the exact thing it's not the it is not the um uh the original thing but it's a scaled-down version of the original thing just to give you an idea of what the original thing is right and so when we look at the scaled on version it should give us that longing for more longing for the real thing you know what i'm saying you know that that that's what it is there for it so we look at the centuries and the point is that the earthly center with all its rituals and procedures were examples symbols and morals of what is going on in heaven with jesus as our high priest in the heavenly sanctuary or for father's reference to their jewish ancestors who left egypt were under the clot sorry our fathers referenced to their jewish ancestors who left egypt were under the cloud passed through the sea and thus were all baptized into a new life of freedom from slavery so baptizing to moses just to give you a summary of this is that they move from baptism is moving from what one life to another life you are being transformed so they were transformed from egypt to the wilderness and thus we look at it as being baptized in moses they went through the red sea as well all right which represents water now we are time is moving well i have about 10 minutes uh we're going to rituals and sacrifices so in the old testament many of us know that um to atone for sin uh to offer a sacrifice you know um and god gave the specification it was supposed to be a female uh uh uh alarm right so um and spotless too thank you no blemish in other words not a broken foot lamb you know that you don't really want you must give off the best you know what i'm saying but this lamb [Music] could not atone for our sins however they had to do it to atone for their sin this lamb represents christ who is the atonement for our sin who is the real lamb who who died on calvary's cross for our sins so if we look at it jesus is in the middle of then and now what do i mean by that then the sacrifices pointed forward to jesus then on the cross but now we are looking backwards to jesus then on the cross for our sins you have a point elder yes couldn't do anything yes yes thank you very much and the shedding of blood ultimately was pointing to the shedding of jesus blood on calvary's cross to redeem each and every one of us from our sin a ritual is an excellent communicator of important value and information and it needs to be understood in its context it usually requires a specific time a particular location and a predetermined sequence of actions to be efficacious indeed then we read sorry indeed when we read through the biblical injunctions in the old testament regarding sacrifice it becomes clear that god gave very specific details about what could be sacrificed and about when where and what ritual and procedure to be followed and the bible tells us later on that while sacrifice is good in first samuel chapter 15 verse 22 the bible tells us behold to obey is better than sacrifice it's not nullifying sacrifice but it's saying obedience is the ultimate thing when it comes to christ you have appointment brother um um um [Music] thank you for that point but what i'd like to say um it's a combination of the life and also the sacrifice because look if he had only lived a life and there was no sacrifice then would all be doomed you follow what i'm saying so the sacrifice and that is why so much importance is being shed on the sacrifice because the sacrifice is very important no matter what you do or what you have done or what you did if jesus is jesus didn't die on calvary's cross we would not have that gift of eternal life so that you know the life is important but without christ's death our living would be in vain you follow our living will be in vain now the example of rest you know as i look at the rest i realize that the world in which we live generally don't have a problem with rest the world don't have a problem with rest sometimes we adventists believe the world have a problem which was the world don't have a problem with rest tell you why they you know you normally work either six or five days a week then you have two days off the rest right and even when you go to work sister anne you know you start working and then maybe after three hours or so you get a little 15 minutes break you get a little 15 minutes rest you know and then you get lunch time then you get it then you go home and get rest so the word believe in rest but the problem with the world is that they don't believe in rest god's way you follow what i'm saying the war believe in rest but not rest god's way god gives us an example of all to rest in in genesis he tells us that you know you work six days and he rest on the seventh day now he as we mentioned earlier about types and so on it gives us a time and it tells us what to do in a certain time you follow what i'm saying so here god says i created this world in six days and i rested on the seventh so he's saying he's giving us a timeline the rest time is the seventh day but also the rest include uh being away from all the mundane things of life so it's rest that involves worship involved a certain time and a certain activity that activity is worshipped but man choose to do it another way man choose to do it another way now let us look at hebrews chapter four uh ibis chapter four i think it's what one to 11 hebrews chapter 4 yes hebrews chapter 4 1-11 i may not read all the verses but um i'll read some it says let us therefore fear lest a promise being left us of entering into his rest any of you should seem to come short of it for unto us was the gospel preached as well as unto them but the word preached did not profit them not being mixed with faith in them that heard it so it's not only hearing the message but it's having the faith to do what the message says for we which have believed do enter into rest as he said as i have sworn in my wrath if they shall enter into my rest although the works were finished from the foundation of the world for he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise and god did rest the seventh day from all his work and in this place again if they shall enter into my rest now um if we look at the sabbath the sabbath rest while it's uh miniature uh or scaled on version of the rest the the the rest would have when christ comes and why i say that understand it in the context now when god rested he had finished his work of creation they follow the entire work of creation was finished so after he rested he did not go back to his work of creation you follow what i'm saying now we on earth here we rest but then we go back to work tomorrow or the other day you follow what i'm saying but when god comes we will have that same eternal rest like god we won't be resting to go back to work you follow what i'm saying our won't be resting from sin to go back into sin the children of israel when they left egypt that was it they did not return to egypt you follow so that's the ultimate rest which god wants us to eventually have i realized that my time is far spent but i just rush on to harden not your hearts so god wants us to have that eternal rest and he wants us in faith to believe in his words trust his word and follow what he says but many of us like the children of israel harden their hearts my sister just a quick point because my time is upwind foreign well i i would say so that they they don't believe god but they believe someone else you know they do rest so they believe in the rest but they don't rest as all god said they are to rest you follow what i'm saying so therefore they won't enter into that eternal rest because they are arresting man's way and not god's way now we look at the children of israel again and we realize that of all that had left egypt all of them perished in the wilderness except two so only two entered the promised rest if you will the promised land you follow so why the murmur they complain lord send me back to egypt man you'll give me the liquor funny food realty and the willingness you know i mean look how the food in egypt tasty sisterhood i know you're giving me all that it's a good funny food that tastes bland you know colored on cabbage you know i want my big ox there i think that you know and and so they they complained and they died you know because they they left egypt but they wanted the things of egypt so what what god is trying to show us he wants us to get rid of egypt totally when we leave egypt nothing of egypt must you know remain with us and so it is in that final rest in the kingdom when we leave this sinkhouse earth there'll be nothing from this sin curse earth that we will take to us in the kingdom so brothers and sisters you know let us not harden our hearts like israel of old but trust god obey him follow his words so that when he comes we can enter into his eternal rest god bless you [Music] vietnam is one of the most visited countries for tourism in southeast asia it offers so many exciting things for its visitors from the breathtaking vistas of halong bay to promising business opportunities in the city hanoi is the place to be for tourists and locals alike with a population of 9 million living in the city there is only a small number of adventists yet this is an opportunity for the church to reach more people for christ the adventists here constructed a seven-story building as an urban center of influence in hanoi to meet the needs of the local community on our first floor we have a bookstore that is open to the community where people can come in and purchase books that can help them to grow in their walk with the lord we have english language school that we are able to build relationships with individuals we are reaching out to the community by ministering to children that are needing help with their education the church meets here in the building on a regular basis from healthy cooking classes to a running club that meets every sunday morning they have a lot of fun with their community the center's activities have allowed them to build strong partnerships and even friendships with government officials an opportunity has arisen for us to partner with the religious affairs committee of vietnam and we are teaching english there on in their building to 28 of their staff members all the way from receptionist secretaries to the top of the religious affairs committee through these activities the center's workers and volunteers hope to be a shining example of christ's method of ministry they want to share and introduce christ's love to everyone without this purpose this building is only a building like any other the center of influence is just that it's a it's a place to to provide influence a place that influences the community it's a place that provides space and opportunity for the church to to meet and mingle with people to build relationships friendships to to build trust and to win their confidence and when the opportunity arises to offer them a relationship with jesus christ with growing demand for their services this ministry is also facing some serious challenges but the challenges are are real it's a city of 9 million people the church here in the hanoi area is small so we don't have a lot of manpower to to draw from in working the center of influence here we need volunteers to fulfill the calls that we have out we need volunteers from the local church to partner with us in the ministry we have calls out for international volunteers to come we have not had a lot of response from that yet and so we're still needing people to come and do ministry here from abroad despite challenges and setbacks god is still using his workers to bless others some of the students in the center's english class have gotten a glimpse of christ's character through their teachers they are all really patient yeah really really patient that's what i cannot see in the some other you know name language center or something oh i feel refreshed because the teacher here you know that they is friendly generous and they try to close their students here to see people come to the language classes and then they they start coming to church and you know that god is at work that he is doing things god can work miracles so we're looking forward to seeing what he has in store for us please pray for this urban center of influence in vietnam pray so that the lord of the harvest will open hearts and send more laborers to this place if you feel impressed to serve visit vividfaith.org to browse open calls from around the world please heart because he's always there to listen to us and to respond to us it's no different now i invite all those who are here and also online to assume pastor of prayer as we lift our hearts to god at this time so invited to please kneel with me as we pray [Music] [Music] [Music] let's pray most holy and everlasting father what in heaven it's indeed an honor and privilege lord that we are given this opportunity where he can come before you lifting our hearts and to share with you what's in our hearts oh god i come to god on behalf of your people father there's nothing good in me i ask even now a father that you remove from me lord all that is unlike you and you stain every form of sin that is in my life i asked god by your holy spirit power that you will cleanse me from all unrighteousness i ask all those who are lifting our hearts even now in prayer that you will have mercy upon us as we call upon you our heart as our heart is lifted towards you at this time i pray that you will hear and you'll answer our answers as we call upon you as your people lord we are mindful of the time that we are living signs are telling us that very soon you'll be bursting the clouds of heaven to call your people to where you have gone to prepare for us and father we come asking you that you will continue to help us to live a life that will be right and pleasing unto you for we know that with our own strength we will fail so we ask so god that you will allow your holy senate holy spirit that we will be transformed and not only that oh god that we as your children will share with others who are around us and tell them of the love that you have for them and what you have gone to prepare for us you have gone to prepare us place for us in heaven father many are around us they are feeling because of the situation their their hearts are unfair many around us so god don't know what to do because the world is so enough that there is no hope father you have promised that all those who come to you you will give them life and you'll give it more abundantly and may you give them that assurance that with jesus on their side there will be joy everlasting father i bring before you all those who are at this time experiencing lost i bring before the davis davis family who are experiencing loss of their loved one lord father we know how it is when we lose someone who are close to us please comfort them oh god wherever we are please oh god i ask that you will hurt them that they will have that hope knowing that death is not the final act that you will be coming back to take your people back those who are dead those who are alive a bit and those who have their rules washed in the blood of the lamb will be be taken to live with you for it all eternity and not only those oh god who are mourning our acts what those who are sick at this time i ask that you will give your healing touch upon their bodies oh god father i asked i will great those who are sick spiritually that you will grant them that healing touch also to restore them to the place that they can look and see that loving face of yours oh god i also bring before your young people father you know the many trials that they are experiencing even now it's very difficult in these times there are so many distractions lord and father you want to save them help them of god that they will surrender their life to you that they will put you first in their life even though they were offered many things that may seem enticing but lord with you we know that there's assurance that you will lead them to a place in which they will have abundant life i also bring before your god the leadership of this church i actually agree with the pastors pastors folks and pastor king i actually continue to bless them of god and help them of god that they as they be your shepherd to lead the flag that you will give them the power of your holy spirit to be able to attain with them so that they can lead wisely be with your people even our god as we embark on this journey to journey to the promised land help us oh god i will stay faithful until the end not giving up in any way but not looking back but we will keep our eyes on your god so continue to build us as we worship you today with your holy spirit continue to teach us and to help us the lord to draw closer to you i thank you lord for all that you have done for us this is my prayer in jesus holy name amen [Music] it's now time for our offering and um for those who are not here you may submit your offering online you can go to the church website and submit online or you can come here on a wednesday between the hours of or ten to two some something like that and you can take your offering and tithe here and for those who come here you can give it may the lord bless us as we worship in tithe and offering let us pray father in heaven we thank you so much for the blessings that you have bestowed on us we thank you for all that you have given us all that you have provided for us and lord at this time we bring a portion to thee we pray that you will bless it multiply it so that it can go to the furtherance of thy cause so that those who don't know you will have the privilege of knowing you before it is eternally too late in jesus name we pray amen george king put god first even when the church rejected him as a preacher what can we learn from him today that will help us put god first in our own lives george was a young man who firmly believed that god called him to preach the good news this was 1880 and james white was still alive so the king decided to ask him about becoming a preacher james and ellen white invited king to their home and although they were sure about his devotion to god's calling they were unsure that he had the talent or educational background to become a preacher so they asked the gods marks to take brother king and determine whether he could become a preacher george then moved in with the godsmark family and they arranged a time when the young man would preach to them in their family room these were agonizing times for him his supplications could be heard before sunrise and he would practice in the barn for hours despite the cold george finally got his chance the chairs were arranged and everything was set up for his sermon it was a disaster after this occasion they made clear to george that he couldn't become a preacher rejection is never easy but george king was so faithful that he decided to put god first even when it meant being humble to accept rejection soon after that george became a fireside preacher armed with literature he started visiting house to house sharing the good news and selling books and tracks he carried with him this was called cole portering and the adventist mission would never be the same again for nearly 30 years until he died in 1906 george trained hundreds of book sales people in north and south america and the west indies his methods influenced literature evangelism around the globe by 1886 when the church's ministerial workforce was still counted in the dozens 400 adventist coldporters sold books worldwide and penny tracks door-to-door george king put god first even when he was rejected as a preacher his courage and humility inspire us today jesus gave up everything to redeem us and his love compels us to put his kingdom first in our own lives as we return our tithe and promise offerings we are challenged to put god first happy service boys and girls this is sister dyer and i will be reading your story today and it's taken from the book sunny side and it's entitled broken arrows but first i'm going to read the bible text and it's taken from matthew 5 verses 46 to 48 if you love those who love you what reward will you get are not even the tax collectors doing that and if you greet only your brothers what are you doing more than others do not even pagans do that be perfect therefore as your heavenly father is perfect you know you say some pretty dumb things but that's got to be one of the dumbest carlene scoffed when are you going to grow up anyway what a baby tears stung my eyes as i watched carlene and some of my friends walk away i felt as though she had taken an arrow and shot it into me her unkind words continued to sting me as they replayed over and over in my mind the more i thought about it the matter i got just then someone sat down at the table next to me it was jeanette she was not popular but for some reason she'd taken a liking to me and hung around with me whenever she could is something the matter jeannette asked it was on the tip of my tongue to tell her that any idiot could see that yes something was wrong and maybe i did just lose my best friend but it certainly wasn't her is that a nice thing to say a voice in my ed asked i squirmed uncomfortably jeanette hadn't done anything wrong she was just worried about me if i were mean to her it would be just like taking the arrow karlene i shot into me taking aim at jeanette and shooting it at her instead i came here to break arrows the voice in my head continued you don't have to let evil continue give me the arrow i'll break it and it will end here yes it would end here i smiled and turned to jeanette thanks for asking i'll be okay what do you do when someone shoots an arrow of hurt into you why do you think it's important not to string it up and shoot it into someone else jesus wants you to come to him when you are hurt he doesn't want you to take it out on someone else by me being mean to them he wants you to come to him he wants you to ask for healing he wants you to ask for help to forgive that person he does not want you to go somewhere else he wants you to go to him because jesus will help you to end it okay he doesn't want you to continue evil he wants you to end it boys and girls let us pray dearly father i pray that you'll be with us as we go about our activities each day sometimes dear father there are people who will purposely hurt us hurt our feelings help us father to come to you for healing and to help us to forgive that person so that we can end evil thank you for dying on the cross for us and for forgiving us of our sins help us to continue to have a pleasant sabbath and to receive many blessings or ask it in jesus name amen so boys and girls have a wonderful sabbath and remember that jesus loves you bye for now the scripture reading is taken from saint mark chapter 8 and i'll be reading from verse 22 26 would you stand for the reading of the scripture please and he cometh to bethsaida and they bring a blind man unto him and besought him to touch him and he took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the town and when he had spit on his eyes and put his hands upon him he asked him if he saw ought and he looked up and said i see men as trees walking after that he put his hands again upon his eyes and made him look up and he was restored and saw every man clearly and he sent him away to his house saying neither go into the town nor tell it to any in the town here is the reading of god's holy word amen good morning once again everyone the privilege is mine to introduce our speaker for today uh this individual that i've that i'm introducing i've come to call him a friend um and we actually share uh the fact that he actually comes from montreal as well so someone coming from montreal can't be too bad either amen um the person that i'm introducing is none other than the youth pastor of willowdale church pastor samuel cinenainar samuel ciner pastor sam graduated from berman in 2019 where he met his beautiful lovely lady lulu who is joining him here today and we are so blessed to have pastor sam with us today and i know that god is going to use him to speak to us so without further ado after the music of meditation the next voice that you will hear is none other than pastor samuel cineinar [Music] my father is omnipotent and that you can't deny our god of might and me reckless disreturn in the skies [Music] it took [Music] to put the stars in place it took a miracle to hand the world in space but when he saved my soul cleanse the name [Music] of love and [Music] his glory has been shown we still can't fully see [Music] the wonders of his might his throne it will take eternity [Music] to put the stars in place took a miracle to hang the world in space but when he saved my [Music] [Music] [Music] the bible tells us of his poor and wisdom all the way through and every little bird and floor are testimony too it took a miracle to put the stars in place he took a miracle to hang the world in space but when he saved my soul cleanse [Music] of [Music] amen [Music] man thank you so much for that wonderful wonderful piece of music happy sabbath down to church family man is it good to see people in the house of the lord special welcome to you and welcome to our online viewers if i'm looking at you a little too intently it's not only to make sure that you're listening but it's also to you know really basting the fact that there are people in god's house uh it's been way too long at willowdale that we've had people it's actually our second sabbath that we've been reopened so i'm still getting used to it but it's good god is good and all the time god is good once again i want to thank pastor folks for the invitation to worship with you guys today i do bring greetings from pastors godzilla pastor jake and pastor ida who are my colleagues at willowdale and they do share their greetings with you just like pastor fox mentioned i did i do come from montreal quebec just like him that's where the good looks and charisma comes from amen and before that before here i've been at willadelph for two years and before then i was at burma university graduated in 2019 so just a little background for those of you who may have not seen me before i've worshipped here once before and it was as a student actually we came as a school and it was a good experience but man just singing songs and worshiping this morning just made made me remember reminded me of montreal when i worship at west island church just the vibes and just it feels like home down zoo does feel like home so thank you thank you for that without further ado let's jump right on into the word for today when the sisters growing up there were a lot of things that i really dreaded doing and i wanted to avoid doing as a child after supper maybe some of you can relate i dreaded doing the dishes i i still dread doing the dishes after school i dreaded doing my homework i wanted to avoid it at all costs and around bedtime i wanted to avoid going to sleep and when i woke up i wanted to avoid going to school after a bad report card i'd better avoid my father and if i stained my clothes at school can't look at my mom however you know avoiding things never really worked out in my favor and one thing i absolutely wanted to avoid wearing as a child was wearing glasses was wearing glasses i just just the thought of wearing glasses would irritate my soul and you know i'd see people wearing them all the time students at the time and it just seemed like such a burden they would get knocked off of their faces when we were playing sports and every time they came inside it would be all fogged up had to be wiping their lenses all the time and let's not forget the facts that sometimes they were made fun of at school so i made myself a promise as a 13 year old boy i said sam you're never ever going to wear glasses you're never ever going to wear glasses and i went on with my naive life i remember this moment so vividly i was beginning grade 8 and i remember going to math class and i would sit down where i'd normally sit in the front row and the teacher began putting a little you know equations on the projector screen and as i was looking at the equations something wasn't right i couldn't quite distinguish the numbers that i was looking at on the board and as i was getting ready to raise my hand to tell the teacher to adjust the focus on the projector because i was so sure that the problem was with the projector and not me i started looking around and noticing that everyone else was copying their notes just like they should be i even asked the brother beside me i said hey man can you see what's on the board and he looked at me perplexed and he said wait you can't and that's when i realized my eyesight wasn't as good as i thought it was but what was the promise i made myself you're not going to wear glasses it wasn't an option for me so i decided that i was going to just have to deal with it and you know i got into the habit of finding shortcuts you know i was copying off of my friend's notes because i can see up close i couldn't see far i i got into the habit of squinting even taking pictures of the board and then copying it off of my phone i even got my first watch in grade 8 because i can no longer tell the time on the wall man eventually i couldn't handle it anymore i couldn't cover it up anymore and i ended up getting glasses and i'll never forget the feeling i felt when i put those glasses on for the first time it was as if i'd entered a whole new dimension oh you're not listening to me it was as if i entered a whole new world sure it was an uncomfortable feeling at first but everything i was seeing clearly made up for that going home i remember i was staring at the car window and i was looking at words on billboards that i didn't even know existed i looked in the mirror i realized i wasn't as good-looking as i thought i was but it was crazy to me that i had avoided wearing glasses for so long but what was even more outstanding what was even more mind-blowing to me was the fact that i had settled for my blurry vision i was so set on not getting glasses that i became used to seeing things blurry i settled for my poor vision so my question to you this morning brothers and sisters is simply this can you see clearly bow your heads with me and close your eyes father in heaven i thank you lord for this wonderful opportunity you've given us to worship together in your house lord as we take some time to analyze our lives and analyze a story in the book of mark i pray that you may come into our hearts and our minds help us feel you speak to us let the words that come out of my mouth not be my own but yours and let it not go through one ear and out the other but resonate in our hearts is my prayer in your name amen text i'd like to focus on today was read prior in mark chapter 8 verses 22 to 26 now prior to this text let me give you a little setting of what's been going on jesus had just been going around healing people just like he did preaching the gospel he just healed the deaf mute he had just fed 4 000 people and was just fresh off of dealing with the pharisees constant demand for signs and you know prior to making it to bethsaida our setting for today christ had just finished scolding the disciples because they were worrying about starving because they hadn't packed much food to eat completely forgetting about what jesus had just done with them 4 000 people so let me read it for you once again the word of god says verse 22 then he came to bethsaida and they brought a blind man to him and begged him to touch him so he took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the town and when he spit on his eyes he put his hands on him and he asked him if he saw anything blind man looked up and said i see men like trees walking then he put his hands on his eyes again and made him look up and he was restored and saw everyone clearly then he sent him away to his house saying neither go into the town nor tell it to anyone in the town i don't know about you brothers and sisters but i really appreciate being being able to see people value their vision that's no secret that's why the saying goes seeing is believing being able to see something or someone cements our trust and our belief in them we depend on our vision for most things in life there's no doubt why it's probably the most important of the five senses it allows us to walk freely and safely in anywhere it enables us to observe the beauty of life it helps us do the things we have to do love the people we claim to and glance at the beauty of this world however this blind man did not have this privilege the man found himself in bethsaida an ancient fishing village near galilee this morning i want to break down the story into three parts so that we can really dissect it the first thing i want to focus on today is what jesus first did the first thing is that he took this man out of the village now why why do that i mean the people of the village brought this man to jesus in order to see a miracle why couldn't christ heal him in front of everyone to see why not use this opportunity to show people who jesus really is why take him out it appears as though brother and sisters for jesus to reveal himself to this man jesus needed to take this man away from the village i don't want you to miss this what's christ really trying to portray here see jesus is always trying to open our eyes to see the splendor of his glory he's always trying to show us who he is however sometimes he's unable to do that because we find ourselves in the city i'm not talking about toronto he's unable to reveal himself to us because we find ourselves in places that we shouldn't be in jesus may be trying to walk us away from the city but is unable to maybe do to the people we surround ourselves with he may be trying to tell you something but isn't but it isn't getting through due to the influences around you jesus is just trying to bring us to a place of solitude where we have nowhere else to go but to him however sometimes in life brothers and sisters i can attest that we lose sight of god because we get distracted by the people the places and the attractions of the city see the world has such a vast and seductive pool that encompasses us and jesus is saying listen man i can't open your eyes in the city we preoccupy ourselves with just about everything in the world and we fail to acknowledge jesus in it all brothers and sisters i'm here to tell you today that jesus can't show us who he is if we remain put in the village he can't open our eyes if we aren't willing to turn away from what's distracting us from following him and see the devil the devil is smart he's strategic he has many ways of attracting us elsewhere instead of following jesus he has many ways of confusing our priorities he has many ways of blinding us with the things that we must complete on a day-to-day basis that we just don't have room for jesus anymore the society we live in takes away the need of jesus in our lives when we become consumed by what the world offers we fail to see the dire necessity for god in our lives especially nowadays when the world is dealing with a pandemic i mean what an opportunity like now or for the past two years where we've been kind of stuck at home what an opportunity like that to spend time with god but yet i still find us myself included finding distracting myself with a lot of other things that i need to get done what a time like now that we could be using to work on our relationship with god but we're still not making time for him how many of you guys find it hard to make it time for jesus how many of you guys find yourselves distracted with just so many things church family i cannot stress enough how important it is for us to make that time for god we need we make time for everything else we make time for our friends we make time for our family we make time to go work out we make time to go eat when we're supposed to god wants to be a priority in our lives but he can't force it upon us it's up to you to make that decision and make that time for him it's interesting to me that jesus told this blind man to go home without going through the village because something about this village would distract him once again see sometimes we too we find ourselves in circumstances that we shouldn't be in and the devil is smart enough to to try and trap us in the city but praise god that we have a savior who's willing to walk us out praise god that jesus is willing to take us by the hand and lead us out of whatever trouble we find ourselves in but the real question is are we willing to follow jesus even when we don't know where he's taking us the text goes on to say that jesus took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the village to put things into perspective brothers and sisters the blind man followed christ a man that he probably didn't know well but only heard things about by the hand outside of the village while not being able to see where he was going you know in the past when i worked at summer camp i had to train for a segment of the camp a week of the camp that we called blind camp it was when blind campers would come and we would take care of them for a week and in order to train the new workers what the staff would do is that they would cover our eyes and have them move us around the campgrounds right feed us when it's time just as we were to feed and lead the blind campers when they got to the camp and let me tell you brothers and sisters not being able to see for those 35 minutes were probably one of the most worst experiences of my life i was remember i was taking small strides i was hesitating before every step because i was afraid that i would bump into something or i would fall even though the people who were leading me were people that i knew very well i remember being extremely nervous about how these blind campers would react to me but as soon as they got off the bus and as soon as they were assigned to me the first thing they did is that they held onto my arm as tight as they could they didn't know my background brothers and sisters they didn't know what i looked like they didn't know where i came from but yet they trusted that i would take them to their designated destination safely they trusted that i would feed them when it was time they trusted i would take them to their activities or give them their medication on time and that made me think about my own spiritual life with god my walk with god if these blind campers are able to trust me with their lives without barely even knowing my name how much more should i trust a god who i claim to know and love to lead me when i don't know where i'm going many of us we stay in the village because we're comfortable because that's where we think we see things clearly and we don't want to follow christ outside of the village because we don't know where he's taking us and that thought is just so frightening to us but jesus is telling us that in order for us to see clearly we need to follow him blindly in other words we need to follow him even when we don't know where he's leading us we need to cling on to him trusting that he will open our eyes when the time is right however jesus isn't leaving us with no guise he isn't leaving us high and dry his word is a constant guide to the lost he gives us the opportunity to talk to him in prayer he's given us endless ways to communicate with him through prayer and devotion but the question is is that enough for you is that enough for me or are we are we finding comfort in what the city has to offer are we better off staying in our comfort zone where we think we can see what we're dealing with your family i don't know what your story is i don't know what step you're hesitating to take but god is saying listen i just need you to hold on to me i need you to trust me i know you don't know where you're going but i do but are you willing to hold on to me as i take you there it could be a new job it could be moving to a new place it could be meeting new people it could be starting a new grade it can be going to a new school whatever it is that's holding you back from reaching or attaining that next level god is saying trust me i got you you know prior to beginning my studies to become a pastor i always had a plan for my future i'm sure some of you guys can relate i loved having a plan that's what i did for my whole life i always knew what i had to do next i knew what goals i had to achieve next especially in school everything was set and all i had to do was accomplish it but when i finally accepted that call to ministry man was i scared i was scared because now i no longer knew what to expect i could no longer see what was ahead of me i can no longer see if there was a job that i could get later on because it wasn't up to me and that enabled me to finally put my faith to the test and i remember i was talking to the chaplain at the on the campus there and i'll never forget the words that he told me he compared it to my long car journey from montreal to alberta a distance from the distance between these two provinces about three thousand five hundred kilometers some of which my father and i had to drive at night you see in a car at night brothers and sisters you can't see what's five kilometers ahead of you at a car at night in a car at night you can't see what's two kilometers ahead of you and if you had a car like mine at the time you couldn't even see what was 500 meters ahead of you but what you could see was what was a hundred meters ahead of you and as soon as you cross that you can see the next and he challenged me to take my walk with jesus 100 meters at a time you see with god he's never going to show you the whole picture he's never going to show you the whole road he's going to show you a little bit and ask that you deal with what he's given you and after you deal with that he'll give you the next and that's something i carried with me for until today when sisters god is calling us to take our walk with him a hundred meters at a time however are we willing to trust god to take us through see trust isn't easy brothers and sisters especially with someone you cannot see but god is asking you and i to take a chance the final aspect of the text i'd like to focus on is the fact that this healing took two phases see jesus my jesus had healed many people with just one touch he healed many lepers with one touch he made the death here again see the hem of my jesus's garment radiated with so much power that it was able to heal a woman with an infirmity of 15 years he was powerful enough to speak life into jairus's daughter while being miles away from her now why would jesus who spoke life into lazarus with just a few words take two attempts to heal this man was jesus not powerful enough to heal him with just one touch or just one word notice that the first time jesus spat and touched this man's eyes his eyes were open but he saw men as trees he acknowledged the fact that he couldn't see clearly and which then allowed jesus to touch him one more time brother sisters jesus is trying to show us that a relationship with him is not instantaneous it's progressive jesus is saying that a relationship with me grows with constant communication and devotion see when we first come to jesus what that's a blessing don't get me wrong he opens our eyes we were blind but now we can see but can we see clearly or do we like the blind man see men as trees but this is the bottom line is that we will never ever be able to see the big picture with god right away but it's through a consistent relationship with him that we can begin to see things differently with clarity god is saying listen i don't want you to be stuck in that first phase of healing where your eyes are open but you're unable to see with clarity and just like i did as a child you're beginning to get used to it get accustomed to your blurry vision that's not where jesus wants us to be he doesn't want us settling for things that we know we shouldn't he doesn't want us for settling for relationships that we know we shouldn't he doesn't want us to to settle for influences that we know we shouldn't be close to we find ourselves maybe settling for things that we do on the sabbath that we know we shouldn't we begin to justify sin we allow our diso we allow our disappointments to justify our disobedience in god we don't want to take that next step with jesus and further our walk with him because we think we have a pretty clear idea of who he is and what he can do for us well i've been in church for what 40 years i got a pretty clear idea of who god is i've been a deacon and deaconess for what 15 years i know who jesus is i know who god is i come to church every sabbath but god sometimes our vision is just so obscured of god we're in a blurry phase where we have one foot with god and one foot with the world we're neither hot nor cold and god is telling us to pick one either be for him or be for the world but don't try to play both and you know god predicted that this would happen in the last days to the church of laodicea he wrote in revelation 3 verse 15 to 18 you say i'm rich i've acquired wealth and do not need a thing but you don't realize that you're wretched pitiful poor blind and naked i counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire so that you can be become rich and white clothes to wear so that you can cover your shameful nakedness and salve to put on your eyes so you can see but sisters god's desires include getting our attention so that we can turn away from whatever it is we're with and by from him gold refined in the fire his goal is to clothe us in those white garments and anoint our eyes with eyes south you see brothers and sisters the laodicean has the same problem the laodicean is blind to god at work in their life and in the lives of others why because they're busy doing something else see the laodicean isn't lazy instead they're they're distracted with the busyness of the with the world with getting ahead in life while everything else with everything else rather than being involved in with the things of god but god wants the laodicean to be zealous not in the domain of making money not in the domain of building profit or feeling their social character but god wants him to be zealous for him however laodicean at times pretends to be righteous they've built a facade externally they look like good people and righteous too while all the while inside there's something else they're they're hypocritical that's one of the laodiceans biggest problems they're so focused on other things usually their own well-being that they cannot see god since they have everything all figured out all their needs and many of their desires are already met they in their heart of hearts believe that they really don't need god but christ's advice to the laodicean is to get eyes out so that they can see it's not so that they can see other people and the problems with other people but that they can see the problems in their lives and see jesus in their own lives he wants them to produce righteousness so that they can for they can put on that white clothing representing pure character so that they can purchase the spiritual riches that actually mean something the heavenly treasure that jesus speaks about in matthew chapter six one touch from jesus is not enough brothers and sisters and i'm closing don't get me wrong choosing god is is an amazing choice accepting him as your personal savior is one of the best things you can ever do in your life but maintaining a relationship with him is so so vital god isn't calling you and i to be comfortable christians he's calling us to be his witnesses and to bear his testimony he's pushing us to leave our comfort zone and to do his bidding only then can we have that refined gold in our lives you know jesus spat into this man's eyes and healed him with his literal salve some of us here myself included we might be in need of christ to cleanse our eyes with his spiritual self we may be in need of him to touch our eyes just a few more times so that we can see things clearly or maybe some of us are in need of him to humble us to show us that we don't really know the whole picture because at the end of it all brothers and sisters i'd rather have jesus spit in my eyes a hundred times and spit me out of his mouth because i'm lukewarm we may struggle some of us here may struggle with spiritual nearsightedness where we allow our current struggle and strivings to hold our attention while neglecting our eternal time frame or maybe it's the opposite where we're so focused on what's ahead at the finish line that we're not dealing with what god has given us to deal with right now some of us maybe struggle from a spiritual astigmatism that's when light isn't focused on the retina and making objects appear fuzzy and blurry this may happen when we put our our trust and our emphasis on the words of others and the words of god maybe we struggle with presbyopia when which is when the eye loses its ability to focus up close that happens when we sometimes allow hurts past hurts and experiences to camp out in our hearts cementing it and inhibiting us from focusing on god maybe we're holding certain grudges from the past and we're letting them grow roots in our hearts some of us may just struggle from a lazy eye where we just stop reading his word you know what's interesting to me about this blind man is that he was once able to see he was able to distinguish men as trees meaning he knew what they looked like at one point but lost his vision see jesus here performs an incredible miracle restoring the physical sight of this man on its own the miracle reveals the power of jesus and his compassion towards those in need but the context of the healing and the way mark shares this miracle makes it clear that jesus also intended for this miracle to serve as an illustration first for his disciples and then us as well the importance of having our eyes fully open sisters we are all born spiritually blind and jesus is the only one who can open our blind eyes how many of us have lost our vision how many of us have lost the reason why we started in the first place how many of us have lost that determination we first felt when we came out of that baptismal pool how many of us have just lost sight of jesus as a whole how many of our bibles are catching dust and the beauty about this this be the beauty about this jesus that we serve brothers and sisters is that he doesn't care about how long you've been in the dark he doesn't care about the mistakes that you made he doesn't really mind how you've gone astray because he wants you just as you are friends we shouldn't settle for our spiritual blurriness because there's a plethora of things that god wants to show us there are so many secrets that he wants to reveal to you and me but what he needs is a willing participant you know sometimes we see life in a dimly lit mirror dimly is the greek word from which our english word enigma comes from an enigma is a mystery a puzzle something difficult to understand and right now i'm sure that many of you in your lives have things that are difficult to understand we are like the blind man after jesus supplied his spit things are blurry but that won't always be the case brothers and sisters because our lord promises that there's a time that is coming when we will see all things clearly but just like the disciples were called to wait and when the time is right god will shed light on everything that we need to see and like he gave this blind man complete restoration of his sight he will give us complete restoration of a body and soul unaffected by sin but such as god has already given out his invitation the ball is in our court so my appeal to you is simply this are you willing to allow jesus to lead you in your life are you willing to allow god to lead you out of whatever it is that's distracting you from committing 110 to him are you willing to allow god to lead you even when you don't know where you're going are you willing to hold on to jesus and trust him down the line even when you don't know what there is to expect are you willing to let go of certain people that may be holding you down are you willing to let go of certain places that aren't healthy for you are you willing to let go of certain practices that you know you shouldn't be doing are you willing to admit that you just lost sight of who god is might appeal to you simply this if that's the case god wants you just as you are he doesn't care about the past he cares about what decision you make right now this moment whether that's a decision to recommit your lives to god or commit your lives to god god is saying i want you right now just as you are that's so the case i want to encourage you to talk to your pastors i'm sure that there's a link on the website that allows you to communicate these things and i'm sure the pastors and elders here are more than happy to help you get back to where you need to be the ball is in our court brothers and sisters god just needs a willing participant so are you willing let's pray father in heaven i thank you lord for your love and your tender mercies i thank you for coming into this world and dying on the cross for our sins i thank you for the privilege you've given us to call you our father lord we've been through a lot i'm sure we each have our own story of how life has been hard life hasn't treated us too well the world is struggling right now this pandemic just feels like it's never going to end and lord maybe some of us have lost sight of you through it all maybe some of us think we see clearly but in fact we're missing the whole picture so i ask lord that you may touch our eyes one more time that you may allow us to make that time for you to come to you in our in moments of need not only in our moments of need but all the time on a day-to-day basis i ask you that you may help us recommit our lives to you or rebuild our relationship with you father we know that we're living in the last days and we know that we cannot do anything without you father i pray even for myself that i may see the flaws in my life and see where how much more time i can spend with you where i can fix what needs to be fixed so that i can be the testimony that you need me to bear i pray that prayer for everyone listening today that you may clarify our vision and help us remember why we started in your name we pray amen oh closing
