that the lord is god it is he who made us and we are his we are his people the sheep of his pasture psalms 100 number of psalms verse 3 the new international version here are some questions to consider and reflect on as we go through this week's lesson question number one what is the psalmist encouraging us to do question number two what are we to do when we enter the house of worship and question number three what is your attitude toward worship let's take a brief look at the lesson biblical context this week's lesson and the other four lessons in this unit are in the book of psalms the book of psalms is located at the center of the bible and is the longest single book in the bible psalms is a collection of songs and prayers that express the heart and soul of humanity in the psalms a whole range of human experience is expressed the psalmists confess their sins express their doubts and fears ask god for help in times of trouble and praise and worship him the psalms are collections of praise to god as our creator sustainer and redeemer the book of psalms is a book of comfort during times of struggle and distress many people go to the book of psalms for comfort in times of distress as noted in the sunday school commentary a psalm is the remedy for our midnights of pain and heartache the book of psalms teaches us how to worship and praise god it reveals the majesty of god as well as being a comfort in distress the psalms is presented in five books book one includes psalms number one through number 41 verse 13 and book one was mainly written by david book two includes psalms 42nd number through the 72nd number mainly written by david and the sons of korah book 3 psalms 73 through psalms 89 mainly written by asap and his descendants book 4 psalms 90 through 106 verse 48 mainly written by unknown authors and book 5 psalms 107 through 150 was mainly written by david we will study lessons this month from books 1 3 4 and 5. this week's lesson which comes from psalms 100 is in the book or book four of the psalms psalms 100 is a psalm of worship and praise it is a worship hymn it deals with the essentials of worship it is also referred to as a psalm of thanksgiving psalm 100 is a declaration of the greatness of god the theme for this psalm is an invitation to enter joyfully into god's presence an invitation to praise psalm 100 is perhaps one of the most frequently recited passages in scripture the authorship of this psalm is unknown this week's lesson aims are number one understand why and how god is to be worshiped as found in psalm 100 the second lesson aim is appreciate that god is worthy to be praised and the third lesson aim create a psalm of praise for the lord as we continue our glimpse into this week's lesson i'm going to share two key points from each outline in the lesson text and expound some on each one there are two outlines presented in the adult faith pathway sunday school book in this week's lesson outline number one because he made us and that's psalm 100 verses one through three and the second outline is because he mercied us and that's psalm 100 verses 4 and 5. let's begin our analysis of the biblical text with the first outline because he made us i am reading the lesson text from the king james version key point number one praise the lord verse 1 reads make a joyful noise unto the lord all ye lands verse 2 serve the lord with gladness come before his presence with singing the writer of this psalm encouraged the faithful to exalt the lord and to praise him the psalm begins with an exhortation to shout and make a joyful noise to the lord the point that the author is making is that everyone should praise the lord with a joyful noise with singing and shouts of praise verse 2 summons us to serve the lord as verse 2 states come before his presence with singing clearly this charge is not just for the choir but for every worshiper of god every believer should have a joyful song in his or her heart and on his or her lips singing to god is more meaningful when you know the lord verse 3 reads know ye that the lord he is god it is he that made us hath made us and not we ourselves we are his people and the sheep of his pasture god is good key point number two the lord is both god and creator god is our creator we did not create ourselves it is he that hath made us the psalmist declares that not only did the lord make us but he also claims us as his own as he leads and cares for us like a shepherd caring for his sheep god is well deserving of our praise because he has done great things for us he claims us as his own people as he provides for our needs and covers us with his enduring love and eternal faithfulness as believers we have so much to thank god for he has freed us from the penalty of sin we have been redeemed by jesus's blood so yes we have much to celebrate and praise god for because of who god is and what he has done god is worthy of our worship and perpetual praise there are many good reasons to celebrate the lord and make a joyful noise in his presence the second outline because he mercied us verse 4 enter into his gates with thanksgiving and into his courts with praise be thankful unto him and bless his name verse 5 for the lord is good his mercy is everlasting and his truth endureth to all generations key point number one we are to come into the house of worship with praise and thanksgiving we are to bring our praise with us and thanksgiving with us the psalmist reminds worshipers to lift up thanks and praises to god as they enter the gates of the lord we are to enter into his gates with praise and thanksgiving because the lord is great and greatly to be praised we are to magnify him and lift him up thanking and praising god for all the wonderful and marvelous things he has done for us praise is an action word it is something we do we are to give god praise and thanks god is to be praised lifted up and worshiped we are to worship the lord god alone is worthy of being worshipped what is your attitude toward worship verse 5 reads the psalmist declares that god is good and his love endures forever his faithfulness extends to our generation and beyond key point number two god extends his mercy to all what is mercy mercy is god's loving kindness compassion tenderness forgiveness grace is love and kindness god's mercy was extended when he sent jesus christ into the world to give his life as a ransom for our sins as noted in lamentations chapter 3 verse 23 his mercies are new every morning his mercy never fails he never runs out of mercy his mercy is from generation to generation it is everlasting god's love for his people never changes in summary there are many good reasons to celebrate the lord and make a joyful noise in his presence we can't praise him enough worship him enough and thank him enough psalm 100 shows believers how we are to acknowledge god and worship god whether at church or in our time of private devotion we should enter into worship and worship with joy praise and thanksgiving god deserves praise for who he is and what he does those who praise god declare his goodness graciousness his greatness and grace 100 emphasizes that god is the worthy object of humanity's praise and joy in closing thank you for tuning in to sunday school lesson at a glance i hope this
