here we go a couple of weeks ago I did a video about the gvm motorized slider and you can see that up here really enjoyed filming that video because you can get some really interesting shots using a slider especially a motorized slider so I thought I'd put together for you a bunch of tips to spice up your videos using a slider hello welcome back to the channel if you've not been here before don't forget to subscribe for more gear reviews and tutorials i'm also on instagram and if you head over there you'll see behind the scenes announcements and bloopers as well so head over to the account and I'll see you there anyway I've been using this slider a lot recently because it really helps me especially you know when you're filming on your own it really helps get some creative shots and some movement you dif it's better than just sticking it on a tripod and having a static shot especially if you're filming yourself and filming your b-roll of yourself so it really helps get some dynamic shots and I'm not the most steady person when it comes to handheld footage so getting some b-roll with the slider really helps me out so I'm gonna give you some tips I don't know how many there are yet because I've got a little list here but there's some tips within tips so that it's like a bonus really so let's get straight into the techniques I will say before we start though I am using a motorized slider but you can still get the same effects using a manual slider so don't worry about that right tip number one it's the simple but effective side to side motion now this on its own does add a lot of dynamic to the shot because it's not just a static shot you're getting some movement in there but to make the shot even better rather than just having the camera move from side to side put an object or have somebody stand in the way of the subject so that when the camera moves the subject comes into view and it's being revealed so we'll call this one the reveal so yeah it just adds another dynamic to the shot it's that subject had being revealed and it's such a cool look that you can get from a slider you can do this with gimbals as well but obviously talked about that in my other why using a slider is completely different to using the gimbal and vice versa anyway bonus tip number two on the side-to-side motion is get two or three different shots of the same shot let me explain get a wide shot and a close shot and maybe a mid shot as well if you want but having at least two shots it gives you something to cut too especially if you're doing like a b-roll sequence it's good to have a wide shot of something while it's moving and then cut in to a tight shot it just gives it extra dynamic but make sure when you make the cut that the subject is in a similar place you don't want it cut in here on the slide and then all of a sudden it's over there you want it to match up nicely so when it gets to there that second shots going to take over it'll make sense how I'll know I'll give you an example right the second technique is instead of going side to side you're going backwards and forwards so what we're gonna do is I'm going to take the slider off of the tripod and reposition the plate underneath so we're gonna have it going this way yes you could just rotate the tripod however the tilt and the pan will work differently depending on where you've got the plate attached and you'll know what I mean that will become clearer when you try any of these I'm gonna slide this in and then rotate the camera so now we've got a forwards and backwards motion now the reason why I use another tripod head on top of this slider itself instead of just mounting the camera straight to the tripod is that we've then got more flexibility with an extra tilt and pan moving head so and get even more shots that way then bonus tip here is while you're sliding along you could reveal your subject by tilting upwards or down when your dolly in in and out or you could tilt down or up when you're coming backwards as well and that just creates even more movement in the frame and it's just really dynamic that type of shot especially if you're filming large buildings and stuff like that and you want to reveal the whole building it looks real good right I'm sorry I can't get any clothes cuz this is annoy but I found that when doing the forward and tilt shots it was better to use my bigger fluid head underneath than this one on top because this is a stronger head so it meant that could get smoother tilt like that look where's the other one it's it's a little bit dirty so I can be more accurate with this larger tripod head so that's something to bear in mind you can do all of these things all of these techniques with with the gear that you've got but you're gonna do it better when you've got quality gear so just just bear that in mind obviously it's still gonna look good but and you might just need a little bit of extra practice to get rid of those jolts but still get good looking shots mine's certainly aren't perfect all the time bonus tip number two here you've also got the option with all of these techniques to use manual focus or auto focus so you can have the subject in focus throughout the whole length of that movement or the slide or you could bring it into focus or out of focus right then technique number three this is what I was talking about earlier by repositioning the tripod head plate because now what we can do is tilt let me bring this up a little bit so you can see you probably can't see my face anymore but now what we can do is tilt the tripod head so it's on an angle and now we've got the option to go diagonal with our slider okay I haven't I haven't plugged it in so I'm having told it but anyway so we can go diagonal the only thing with this is the camera is now an angle as well so you're gonna get a diagonal shot which doesn't look great but there's a few options you could get one of these z plates and you can move these in all directions and you put the camera on top of there so that would mean that your camera would be horizontal throughout the whole diagonal movement I wouldn't recommend getting this plastic one because it doesn't really camera it doesn't really stay in the right place so odd I'm gonna I'll leave some links down below so you can have a look at some different ones but the other option is to reposition you tripod head again so you put this on sideways pop it in and then spin that round then tilt the camera there we go and obviously this is gonna hit the rails so you just have to move that out the way like so and then when you go up and down your camera stays horizontal and level with your subject how cool is that the next technique is a parallax type shot it's similar to an orbit except you don't go all the way around and you've got the side-to-side motion with the slider already but then you're gonna pan the camera so that the subject stays in the middle of the frame all the time again you can do this manually if you've got a tripod head and you and your slider doesn't have the option to do the panning but this one has so it's got this little rail inside and if you move these little bits as you panning along the camera moves around for you so you don't have to do anything it's nice and smooth it's a really good shot because you're not just sliding past your subject you're actually keeping it in the center of the frame which is keeping the attention on that subject so it's a really good shot and it's super simple to do especially if you've got a slider that does it for you but it's nice and easy to do manually as well if you've got a head on top of your slider plate leave more gaps you can also do it the other way around so you can pan whilst the slider is going across this seems to work better for landscape shots or when you showcasing rooms in a house and stuff like that because you're showing the whole span of the landscape or the shot so you revealing more of what's in the frame not this doesn't work as well on products because you the focus is going past the subject so it works better when you when you subject is something large like a room or a building or a landscape now I tried this with a wide lens and also a mid shot as well and it worked quite well with both but it depends what you're doing so give both a try and see see how you like to use it this would also work well with a time-lapse so get that pan going get your slider movement and get the pan going and set up your time-lapse and get some really good landscape time-lapse shots especially clouds that looks really good when you've got a moving landscape and the clouds are moving as well it's really dynamic so go and give that one a try and obviously as well you can combine all of these techniques and tips and bonus tips as well with with any combination so you can do whatever you want you can be really creative with a slider so go and give these a try let me know which one was your favorite tip I'm sorry I probably probably got messed up with the numbers along the way but let me know which one was your favorites down in the comments below don't forget to subscribe and like the video share it with your friends and I think that's it something in my ear anyway thank you for watching I will see you in the next video hungry [Music]
