hello my name is Simon from cram knee exam and welcome to another video where I walk you through another English exam question in this in this video I'm gonna have a look at a use of English part 4 question the key word transformations this question comes from the excellent website flo-jo decoder at UK you'll find a link to both flo-jo add to this exercise in the video description below this video if you haven't checked out flo-jo code at UK full of resources for you to get ready for your CAE and other English exam so well worth some of your time so go check it out now the keyword transformation exercise we've already done this a couple of times or you'll see a couple of other videos of key word transformations on my youtube channel difficult difficult question a real test at this advanced level a real test of your vocabulary and unusual language structures so if you perhaps a little bit weak on the vocabulary side one way to get good at vocabulary and practice your skills for key word transformations is to do key word transformation exercises and then you get exposed to the kind of vocabulary that not only that you will expect in these exercises but vocabulary you can use the very good effect in your speaking and in your writing as well let's quickly go over the instructions before we get stuck into it you're given an example sentence you're given the key word you've got to use this key word in the second sentence you can't change the key word you've got to use between 3 and 6 words so there's a lower limit and there is an upper limit easy peasy lemon squeezy we'll see question for question number one you could have been seriously injured not wearing a seat belt think is our key word now you should is kind of covered you could seriously injured not wearing a seatbelt is covered here so our answer has got to kindly cover this bit and maybe a little bit of this bit as well because sure Dan could a slightly different modal verbs but we thought you think how in Lord's name are we gonna do this this is just a pure test of your vocabulary skills if you're not familiar with this phrase then this is one to learn you should think yourself lucky you weren't seriously injured ouch I know yes this is this is an expression it is used a lot particularly in British English you should think yourself lucky you dot dot dot dot dot it means that something could have happened but it didn't if you're not familiar with it then become familiar with it and start using it it's informal of course so I wouldn't start using it with your writing if you're writing an article or you're writing a letter to a headmaster or something or a letter of complaint there are other ways to express this but certainly in perhaps neutral or informal language we can use this now all of the answers are divided up into two points so each answer as you know is worth two points and you get one point for one thing one point for another thing and I'm guessing that for this answer you would get one point for getting this expression correct and you would get one point for getting this part correct I'm guessing so here even if you don't know what this bit is and if you don't know the vocabulary you won't know if you don't know what that bit is it's not unreasonable for you to think of this bit yeah because you've stopped you've got to think of they've got to be a negative and the sentence is generally quite difficult because actually you've got a double negative in the sentence and we shouldn't use double negatives in English but the point I'm trying to make we badly is that if you don't know the whole expression put something in the middle that might make sense and you might get lucky and get one of those points certainly you don't lose points so that's there's no risk of you putting something in the middle and losing points because of that so having an educated guess can only benefit you if you get it correct so that's one point I wanted to make and secondly contracted forms count as two words so this is one two three four five six so don't think that by using a contracted form you can create yourself an extra word it an extra space for one more word it doesn't work like that the only exception to this rule is can and cannot or can't and cannot this cannot is seen as one word so that is a contra as the only contraction that is the exception to the rule all others are counted as two words okay question number two would you give us your answer as soon as possible convenience is our key word and once again this is an expression that is a test of your vocabulary skills mind you this is an expression that is used incredibly often in the workplace so if you're not familiar with this then make sure you know this expression for the workplace so you can use it at work please respond and here we go please respond kindly colors this bit here would you give us because you're asking them to respond to you so please respond would you give us please respond and respond includes your answer because you have to respond with something so please respond as soon sorry my mistake going on the wrong words at your least convey me and I always get this wrong so let me at your earliest convenience that's the expression please respond at your earliest convenience formal official business legal language now I've got a question here that I'm asking myself but I'm asking it for the benefit over you as well you might think please respond to us at your earliest convenience because you might want to emphasize that it's us that that you want the person to respond to the question to myself I guess and to the wider world of the internet would be would you and saying that I've just I think I answered my question in the previous question putting this information in will do you no harm so you don't you don't lose marks for putting in information which isn't relevant as long as it's within the word limit so to us at your earliest convenient is one two three four five six six words is fine if we go up here know that that yes we got six words up here six words is fine so the answer is given as that but I can't see the problem with that either I guess that's why I'm trying to say for question number three I wasn't expecting my colleagues to organize a farewell party on my last day at the company and then we've got the key word taken and then when my colleagues organised a farewell but party on my last day kind of covers this bit here so what we've got to do here is think about an answer which takes into account this vocabulary and the answer would be I was taken by I was taken by surprise and this bit by surprise covers I wasn't expecting and if we hit the answers that's what we get I was taken by surprise when my colleagues organised a farewell party for question number four it's not likely to happen but if you're not satisfied with the product refund your money our keyword is event and we've got this bit here that you're not satisfied with the product your money will be refunded which covers this bit here so we need an answer that's gonna cover this bit here now with event keyword keywords always go with event in the event of or in the event that we've got that so we don't need off in the event of in the event that means if pure and simple so if means in the event of in the event that of course your answers on the answer paper will be in capital letters so you don't have to worry about capitalizing the beginning of sentences but one we're not finished yet we've got to think about this it's not likely to happen so we've got to communicate that message as well and we would do that by introducing a negative adverb here in the unlikely event that you are not satisfied with the product for your money will be refunded question number five it's one thing to think there's a demand for your product and another to actually make the sale and then there's between thinking there's a demand for your product and actually making a sale so actually making a sale is covered here demand for your product is covered here and then we've got to think which is one thing here so we've got two very very similar sentences but we've got this preposition which introduces the contrast between ideas here between this and that whereas the contrast is introduced in a slightly different way here one thing to think this and another to think this so we need to highlight the idea that there's a difference between these two ways of thinking and then we come back to your your knowledge of vocabulary there's a world of difference is our answer there's a world of difference between thinking there's a demand a wonderful emphatic expressive expression there's a world of difference between this and that used in the right context is very very powerful if you can get this into your speaking exam the examiners will be impressed as long as the context is correct and of course this is a good thing to use in terms of disagreeing with someone think part 3 of the speaking exam where you've got to talk about pictures if you can disagree in this emphatic way then the examiners will take notice so a nice expression there and lastly number 6 I'm so sorry I didn't realize it was so late sorry I'm so that bit is covered by that bit there and then we've got talking about time the key word is track and of course what we need here is the idiom which involves track and time I lost track of time let's see if that's correct lost track of the completely lost track of that now I've checked this out and it seems that there does seem to be a difference between what people think the idiom is obviously on this website flo-jo they believe the idiom to be lost track of their time but if you go onto the Internet you check out the various online dictionaries and so on you'll see that people use the idiom lost track of its three words which is okay because the minimum amount of words is three words so I think this is also the correct answer because it's a widely accepted idiom so I think for this you'll also get two points but be aware that the idiom might also be or not might also be is also lost track of the time and there we go that's why I think the answers are the answers I'd love to hear from you if you disagree with me or if you would like me to explain in perhaps a different way then please leave a comment below the video and I will get back to you please remember to check out all my other videos on my youtube channel to help you prepare for your CAE exam subscribe if you haven't already and
