our standing say oh that was the little pocket molecular scanner that I busted sorry is the first molecular sensor [Music] who's responded a little recap say Oh was a device that was pitched as a pocket molecular scale that could basically do anything on Star Trek but what the heck is a molecular scanner is it like one of those tricorder things that mr. data used in Star Trek well actually yes it's totally Star Trek in an instant it displays the food's calorie fat and sugar content it's the quickest way to finding the perfect potato that's cool that's really and you can train yourself Star Trek just as the fictional tricorder could give the crew of the enterprise useful information about their surroundings real-life molecular scanners analyze the chemical makeup of objects without the need for uber expensive lab equipment it raised about three million dollars on Kickstarter and got the ire of backers because of its lack of delivery it also got some great ratings on iTunes one and a half whole stars oh and some fantastic reviews like this overpriced over-promised under-delivered crappy product this is perhaps one of the worst things I've come across in my life not just in terms of the product but also in terms of customer service promise to everything two years late when I asked to return the product and get my money back they said they had no obligation to do any such thing so in summary save your money because this company and everything about it is fraud the device basically makes you tell it what sort of food type you're scanning well let's try it produce selector grapes it says it lets me choose between different types of things I can scan I'm gonna do the grapes right now but then after you scan your food it gives you some fairly generic values for that item not greatly better than what you get of just asking Google so for instance tell scio that yours scanning soft cheese and you'll get some fairly generic values for soft cheese which is because all soft teas basically has a fairly similar content so the obvious problem is you could be safe scanning rockfall and Velveeta the king of cheeses and Velveeta and it'll basically give you some fairly generic values not terribly useful information from a thousand-dollar scanner you can get the values of your smart food for free oh but it was going to tell you which fruit was the rapist well that's until you actually take a look at some people are using it say for instance on completely different apples and you realized that molecular fingerprint that was going to be so informative in telling you which of these apples was rapists they look pretty similar you can see on here that it's scanning [Music] it gives you a little bit of information and this is the spectral fingerprint of that particular Apple and of course if you were to scan a completely different type of Apple I'm sure it's gonna have an incredibly unique molecular fingerprint again gonna come up there a little press in the application right now and again this one's cut a little bit higher in sugar and it does give you some really cool information and again like the spectral fingerprint of each Apple the molecular composition of it's going to be different in everything are you serious dude let me just try something yeah let's see how unique these spectral fingerprints are which brings us on to the harsh here and check for yourself then someone quotes one of the playlists saying this IO can't tell you explicitly the quality of food me I just kind of stuck on point with let's cut to the chase in a blind test can say Oh tell the difference between an apple and a potato spectral fingerprint in light video or GTFO which curiously never got a reply well maybe not so surprising you see turns out that I've got a spectrometer with a better spectral range than this IO spectrometer and this is what the scan of an apple and a potato looked like in the near infrared in the near infrared it looks almost exactly like an orange and for the red apple hey the green bands gone so I can shit from green apple red apple and both of them look basically identical in this portion of the spectrum and let's fill let's just ridiculous do a potato and surprise shock and horror there's the single one absorption band for basically everything yeah I think there might be a reason why there is never a reply to this tweet but let's take a look at this great playlist that was gonna vindicate SIA remember the recommendation for this playlist came from say Oh themselves so this is the remarkable playlist that's going to completely vindicate scio consisting in an amazing twelve videos the first one of which concludes like this well thus I can explicitly tell you the quality of food it's a step in the right direction to empowering consumers to help them make more informed decisions about what they put in their pond or sment the second one is just some weird video about some guy doing something with putting discs in the Sun past the spectrographic fingerprint of two different blu-ray discs over time has try so I run with it let's find the blue string which isn't even in English has a fantastic writing then we get into the testimonials these are gonna be the ones that really vindicate SIA now these go back a long way these go back to 2015 Scilab and learn how to develop material sensing applications and behind me in the room you can see a lot of people who are innovating and trying out the application and that's how good mixing music anyway which materi so let's see what they've got to say bills can be scanned which ones can't what the limitations are and life I've had some good surprises and found some things that are gonna be tough but I'm generally very excited by it these are the testimonials from 2015 the mere fact that maybe a warning okay let's try their second testimonials for the a large spectrometers for oil analysis and I was impressed with the size of this curiosity is can I use it for some of the analysis I used to do with large machinery so that was what I found yeah and I'm gonna guess this was back in 2015 the answer is no it can't be used for any of these things yeah they had some real bars back then but big on testimonials small on actually showing accurate or practical uses for the device or that the device had any uses whatsoever this is the remarkable guy he chewed earlier who scans to apples get exactly the same fingerprint and it doesn't seem to faze him at all and of course scio saying thanks so much for sharing their we got a couple of deleted videos what's this one this is like some people trying to use their so to measure a Twinkie that was like 10 years old I haven't had this in like two weeks so we don't know if the Twinkies gonna work we're gonna scan it we're gonna pretend it's a fruit apple it's probably gonna blow up chocolate great so you can only get the nutritional value if you tell it what the food type ease to begin with then what else we go we are lured had a second full vine nick thin video in German and then finally we have this thing earlier today I stumbled upon the Jang Hong - I hope I'm saying it right and my jaw drop just keep watching the video and you'll see what I mean allowing me to identify that composition of objects in another words it can tell you if you're pointing the device use a strawberry or a strawberry flavored condom it's a bit like tricorder from the Star Trek well according to the promotional video if you should yeah it's not like a tricorder from Star Trek Wow they were thinking of putting this amazing molecular scanner onto a smartphone essentially making it into a tricorder I'm sure that was an amazing success tell you what just for fun let's just do it a little research on that sigh Oh a handheld sensor that could analyze the molecular composition of objects to help you learn more about them at this year's CES the company is taking the next step by integrating scio directly into a smartphone yep it's a tricorder how much will you pay for the spectrum phone but we're looking at a converted price of about four hundred thirty bucks when the h2 launches in China in June 2017 no word on what the price will be when it comes to the u.s. officially in other markets later this year except that phone looks like it never left the drawing board in anything other than prototype form now how why that happened please be good please be a good one whoa 27% average I've done this four other times it was always above average but this time when we got it on tape which you munchkin means it's not very reproducible thank you sigh oh what a great molecular sensor I think thankfully at least some tech reviewers are not willing to give a me gimmick a complete free pass that said I wish there were some more useful applications being showcased I mean no one is gonna use this thing to scan fruit at the grocery store to see which piece is more ripe yes finally someone who hates the nail on the head and body fat measurement outside of a doctor's office is still an error-prone exercise also while I love the medication analysis I have to admit I'm just not ready to trust a phone with telling me whether a pill is safe to put in my body but one of the most distasteful things is when someone does some of the worst reporting ever they call themselves anonymous they are hackers on steroids treating the web like a real-life video game sucking web sites invading myspace accounts disrupting innocent people's lives and if you fight back watch out to blame me for their bad reporting and what I've seen bad reporting I mean doing no investigation whatsoever zero we have new information now also on the plane crash KTVU has just learned the names of the four pilots who were on board the flight they are captain sum ting Wong we too low holy fook and bang bang al making no effort to get hold of one of the devices or verify any of the claims that they made if the NTSB has confirmed these are the names of the pilots on board flight 214 when it crashed we are working to determine exactly what roles each of them played during the landing I'm just reporting whatever the company said because so that's going to be reliable all right so let's talk about thunder puts things so thunder back at it again with another myth busted overall I watched part of the video and a lot of good points in here about these guys look how credible she looks that's awesome um just feels like an infomercial show but what the heck is a molecular tech quickie was taken out of context in such a way that it appeared as though we had been sponsored by one of these molecular scanner companies and hadn't disclosed it what no the hell I mean no implication that you were sponsored playing any of these companies whatsoever that being said yes you hope video did look like an infomercial people think it looks like an infomercial because it looks like an infomercial you know like this look how credible she looks that's awesome but that's not my fault that your video looks and feels like an infomercial and the bottom line is I don't actually care I don't care whether you got paid to promote this bullshit or not which is why I made no mention of that whatsoever in the video never even implied it at all I don't care whether you got paid to promote this or not the bottom line is you were promoting bullshit and that's the only crime I care about you were promoting scientifically illiterate bullshit we're not entirely not at fault here what we didn't do was validate that these particular molecular scanners because we did bring up at least one of them in the video we hadn't validated that they actually worked midway through the video we mentioned these handheld ones are not going to replace the much more expensive versions of this technology that are for lab use we do mention that it sacrifices some degree of accuracy for speed and ease of use and while this probably won't matter much to general consumers it means that I wouldn't bring it into the lab and take its readings as gospel if you're preparing your PhD dissertation it was presented in this video it made it look as though we were endorsing the technology real-life molecular scanners analyze the chemical makeup of objects without the need for uber expensive lab equipment endorsing the technology and the product in particular and that we hadn't disclosed some kind of sponsorship look when your harshest criticism issues you're saying well it might not be quite as good as a professional lab equipment yeah you sound like you're up selling it as part of an infomercial but I mean no implication that whatsoever because I didn't care the only thing that I cared about is this was bullshit and you were promoting it like it was the best thing since sliced bread hell if I'd have wanted to have laid into your video I would have done it like with this thing what you're talking about vibrational spectroscopy which occurs in the infrared part of the spectrum chemicals with a different molecular structure absorb and reflect light in different ways due to electrons in those molecules existing in different energy states but then hold up atomic spectra in the visible look it's right there on the bloody graphic you put up atoms as in atomic spectra okay now come down further to get these atomic spectra you need to get the atoms in a low-pressure gas like say for instance passing electricity through gaseous sodium at several hundred degrees like for instance how you do in an orange sodium street light which is why they're Orange that's the emission line from Saudi plus it should be kind of obvious that their visible emission lines because they're illustrated in the visible part of the spectrum you know not in the infrared part of the spectrum related to molecular vibrations but whatever this is maybe yeah kind of a nitpick as always no one wouldn't know the difference between atomic and vibrational spectroscopy but it's maybe the sort of thing that you should have read up about if you were doing a piece on an infrared scanner it's been a long time since you took highschool chemistry and you forgot all this stuff the gist of it is that a handheld molecular scanner fires a light beam in there note that we have here I haven't seen our version of this video to be completely clear but I know how we make things we could have done a better job of saying that we hadn't validated it or if you want to take the nirs for a nutrition angle a bit further you could point this gadget at yourself and it would give you a body fat percentage so you can feel proud or hit yourself accordingly fair but apparently we do say the company's claims you could point this gadget at yourself and it would give you a body fat percentage we don't say that it absolutely works this way we say that it they claim that they work this way okay so that's where your journalistic due diligence ends the company claimed it so you reported it during my service in the United States at Congress I took the initiative and creating the internet but what the heck is a probably BS based on what I've seen so far analyze the chemical makeup of objects without the need for uber expensive lab equipment but the thing that frustrated me was just that the way it was presented me just look like complete idiots yeah yeah I'm here I mean what do you expect me to say I mean if you just put your hands up and said yeah we screwed up fine whatever but that's not what you did you go on to make this great non-policy this great series of excuses think you made no effort to get a hold of one of the devices no effort to contact the company no effort to verify any of the claims but still went on to claim that it was literally like Star Trek because reasons and most so really and this is the bet I just can't get my head around the reason that you seem to need to have made all of these excuses in the first place is that you think that I was implying in my video that your video had undisclosed paid promotions which is just something that I didn't do so yeah rant over a where were we all right they were gonna put CEO on a phone which evidently went nowhere in fact you can actually go to their website and request information about when the phone will be out even though you can find virtually no trace of it online for the last year in fact sales whole website now has a sort of data harvesting vibe to it okay so here we are on solutions so animal feed download white paper give us all your data or grains download white paper cures all of your data or raw materials download white paper give us all of your details and so on and so forth all the way down to the very bottom of the page where it just says give us all of your details so what else were they gonna embed say oh into well the smartphone's evidently went nowhere so they were gonna put it into smart kitchen appliances and cups and bottles yeah right that really makes sense you want to put a $300 device into cups and bottles so what it can basically tell you something fairly generic that Coke is kind of sweet in fact the only thing here that seems to have gone anywhere is the Nutri smart scale and you've got the Tyrolean nutri smarts the first kitchen scale with an embedded Co Center take that guesswork out of nutritional planning accurately weighing food and measuring nutritional content at the same time making healthy choices much easier well it's actually made by a fairly decent company called terellian and if you follow their link you find this nothing there so then you search for CEO and again you find that there's absolutely nothing there so let's do a search for nutria smart and we find a press release nutria smart the world's first connected kitchen scale with embedded size spectrum spectroscopy technology in the UK next year and what year was this released in 2017 a so 2018 there are still no signs of it now also in 2017 it looks like a scale was actually made at some point like there was with the phone the tech bears now in France when people talk scales like food scales you think Terry own and they've created the nutria smart scale it promotes healthy eating so this new technology as a person gives you a precise analysis of the food that you're weighing right there the calories the fat the protein and so on but there is some small silver lining here seiyya because it turns out they would the dumbest idea of the 2017 CES oh you name it it has it it also has a speaker system inside of it so it plays music to the plants and the herbs so they're nice and happy you could play classical ambient you name it you can right there in the machine it's really neat device all right so everybody yeah now if you go to trial you know turanians website whatever you'll find that the only mention of that scale the Nutri smart scale on their entire website is from an over year-old press release see if I had to guess what happened instead the company took a hard look at the market and said look they're all these health freaks who will pay loads of money for a premium smart scale so there's this scanner that claims that it can do all sorts of things about measuring food that's cool it's really and you can actually train yourself some Star Trek why don't we put one of those on our scales and then they look to date and worked out that it would completely price them out of the market wow that's a bargain for you scan your strawberries to get told that they're the nutritional content of strawberries for about $400 get a digital scale for about $70 or the whole thing for about $500 plus wholesale really does is give you some fairly generic values for the food item you've selected say for instance soft cheese so he's a brilliant idea why don't we just have an app the links to the smart scale where you just tell it what you're weighing and it gives you some fairly generic values for food like say for instance broccoli plus it will make the smart scale $300 cheaper because you won't have this scanner in it and so nutri tab is born so with nutri tab that's all it does is you get your app you choose the type of food then you want to get the nutritional value of say for instance tomatoes it the scale weighs them and then it just sends the data back to the smart phone and boom now rather than it costing about $400 it costs about $50 it's little dad for useless device though because as I mentioned in the previous video if you want to lose weight there's a secret to it just eat less so in summary they tried putting scio on a smart phone and evidently it was such a bad idea that it never went to market they tried putting scio on smart scales which was evidently such a bad idea that it never went to market they proposed putting so on cups which was such a stupid idea that they never even made the prototypes I have still up Dells ifs I could actually distinguish an apple from a potato which honestly isn't that big of an ask for a device that got about 3 million dollars of Kickstarter money but hey maybe one of these days I'll get my one of these devices and we'll see for ourselves but if this guy thinks that I'm gonna give him $1,000 just to see if his device can distinguish between an apple and a potato well I think he's got another thing coming in fact what really does have to raise the eyebrow and wonder if he's gonna type her in that tweet you know he's not really saying happy scanning but you know like a happy scanning [Music]
