I start by laying out the mortises on the bed post I'll cut most of the mortises on my Oliver mortiser I'm using a .5" mortising bit and cutting 2.125" deep There's a total of 8 mortises for the headboard and footboard Two of these mortises I'll cut using my plunge router These are too big to cut on the mortiser After using the plunge router I finish by squaring up the corners with a chisel with all the larger mortises cut I can now work on cutting mortises for the bed rails I use my plunge router to cut two mortises, one at 1.5" wide and one at 2" wide These are both .75" deep Next I drill the holes for my bed bolts Next I need to cut a channel in the bed rail to receive the bed bolt and nut You'll notice I've already cut two mating mortises in the end of the bed rail Now I just need to square up the corners so the nut will fit snuggly in the bed rail The last step for the bed rails is to glue in floating tenons which will help align the rails during assembly Next I begin working on the headboard I pre made a jig on my X-Carve CNC and I'm using a flush trimming bit to transfer the profile After cutting around .5" deep I use my jigsaw to cut the profile Next I layout to cut a single shoulder on the lower tenon A quick test fit...its a bit tight so I shaved off a little more The bottom tenon will not be glued so I need to pin it in order to lock it in place I need to leave it unglued to allow for seasonal movement in the headboard I use my plunge router and a .375" bit to elongate the hole in the tenon This is similar construction to a breadboard end...with the elongated hole the panel can move once pinned With all the joinery cut I work on tapering the bed post I rough cut the tapers on my bandsaw then clean them up using my jointer It's important to take light cuts and go slow here I use my hand plane to clean off the mill marks and smooth the tapers The last step is to chamfer the tapers using a 45 degree bit Okay, so while the headboard and footboard are gluing up I want to take a quick moment to tell you about today's sponsor Casper now many of you may know that my wife is about Four weeks away from having had to think about that It's about four weeks away from having our third child Jetson and she's been begging me to build her a king-size bed Which I haven't had time for She's super uncomfortable obviously being pregnant at night and she needs more room The first thing I noticed about this when you get the mattress it comes in It's a 76 by 80 mattress that comes in a fairly small box And so when you unbox it Which I did with my kids They love this you just unwrap it and it expands and fluffs up into this giant mattress Which my kids were very entertained by they were immediately jumping and winning on it I I could put this in our room and we can my kids for hours on it Another thing that was really cool about Casper that I really like is they design develop and assemble their mattresses in the u.s They have a hundred day risk-free trial. So if you don't like the mattress you can send it back There's no hassle on the return. It also has a breathable design So it regulates your body temperature at night helping keep you cool another great thing I want you guys to know about is Casper's not just a mattress company. They have other bedding accessories So if you're looking for something different other than a mattress Casper has you covered. I want to say Thanks to Casper for doing that you've really made my wife much happier and much more comfortable Which I do appreciate so let's get back to the bed get it all assembled and check it out With the headboard and footboard glued up...I want to assemble the bed to make sure all is good You can see here how well this bed bolt works That's solid!
