well hey there idiots welcome back to observe now netflix recently released a documentary center around elisa lamb and her disappearance and eventual death at the cecil hotel in los angeles needless to say it re-sparked interest in the mystery centered around her death and many people noticed that during the documentary some of the people who were speaking had some irregular behavior not the least of which was the hotel manager now if you have not seen this documentary yet i highly suggest you go and watch that before watching this it will help fill you in on all of the details but many of you wanted me to be able to address the nonverbal communication of the hotel manager and hopefully shed some light as to why her body language seems to be so odd as i said if you would like to be able to know the full details of this case i highly suggest you go and watch the documentary they do a fairly decent job at displaying the story as unbiasedly as possible but for those of you who are not aware of the story itself i'll give you a sparks notes version of it elisa lam was a canadian student who stayed mostly at home but had dreams of traveling abroad so she decided to organize a trip down the west coast of the united states where she eventually found herself in l.a now as many of you know la is not the most inexpensive of places to stay even for a short time so she found herself at the door of a hotel unknown to her the cecil hotel now the cecil hotel has a very long history and it's a very dark one to say the least little did elise and lam know that as she walked through the doors of the cecil hotel she would never leave again as she continued her stay at the hotel she began to display some odd behavior and it was revealed to us the audience that she had a diagnosed bipolar disorder that could win untreated send her into fits of hallucinations and erratic behavior security footage shows her in an elevator displaying such behavior and then she is never seen again only to be found days later by a maintenance person in one of the water tanks due to the warning of one of the residents saying that the color of the water was off and that it had a bad sickly sweet flavor to it elisa was found in the tank with her clothes however her clothes were often at the bottom of the tank while she was floating now there was a mix up as to whether the tank was opened or closed but at the end of the documentary we are able to see that it was indeed open and that raised a lot of questions as to why it was not locked however there are still some suspicious aspects of this case specifically centered around the elevator security cam footage it seems to be tampered with i'm going to be looking at the hotel manager's body language to see if there's any tells of deceit or suspicious behavior centered around questions in relation to that footage and the case itself but that's going to be enough of the back story i'm going to start looking at the footage there's going to be a period that i use to help establish a baseline for the hotel manager and then there will be segments of the actual questions that i want to be able to see if she has any positive or negative nonverbal spikes as well as an additional set of footage from an entertainment tonight interview that she had after the release of the actual documentary that's enough talking let's dive in i was the general manager of the cecil hotel from 2007 to 2017. so 10 years it was like my kingdom it was a kingdom you know i've also called it a zoo okay right off the bat something that i want to note about her face is how it moves on various emotions you'll notice that her brows are extremely still this leads me to believe that she's probably had something like botox here recently that has made it to where those muscles that are normally able to be used as tells are now immobile and that means that it's going to be a less accurate read right off the bat however you can see down at the bottom of her eyes that she does still have the ability to move those muscles so they do emote so we can look for those later on during certain emotional periods to see if the emotions line up with the body language presented and vice versa this is all important to be able to know in a baseline just to be able to establish whether or not we're going to have an accurate read you just never knew what was going to happen at any given day at the time when elisa lam went missing it was alarming but we cooperated with the police officers trying to help the best we can every step of the way so something that you'll notice is that she shakes her head a fair bit and it's usually pretty minute this is part of her baseline as far as i can establish now it could be in regards to nerves but this makes it to where now if there's a negative or a positive it's going to be hard to establish any non-verbal desynchronization between the head shakes and the affirmative words or the head nods and the negative words now this makes it just a little bit more difficult to get an accurate read as to what her mental state is during this interview but even in making note of this and understanding this it will help us understand how to read her more accurately as this interview continues i told detectives that she checked into our hotel on january 28 2013 as far as i know she was going to be staying with us for i believe four days during this time this would be a statement in regards to a question that isn't incriminating in any way it's just talking about how long alisa lam was going to be staying at the hotel and as you see her face maintains a fairly blank expression all the way through so this just means that it's not very useful for me as a numberable analyst to be able to tell whether or not she's going to lie in the future because we don't have much baseline to work off of with what we have so far she's very very blank so far 506 was a female bunk room community toilets and showers were down the hall young travelers are on a budget they just want a clean place to stay in a hotel when somebody doesn't actually physically check out and they leave property in the room it's just protocol that you you know you bag up the belongings and you store them for 30 days you'd be surprised what people leave at the hotel we've found a snake once in the hotel in the bathtub so this is something to note when she's talking about something like finding a snake in a bathtub where some might have some physical tell of revulsion towards that especially in regards to a relationship to snakes many people don't like snakes i don't know what her relationship is to snakes and based off of her nonverbal communication i still don't know she's still maintaining a very blank expression in fact the only thing that's really moving on her face right now is her mouth her eyes are staying very stationary and blank and her eyebrows as we know can't move so this is making the reed to be very very muddy to say the least she has good bones she was done right there's a little little glimpse of actual passion and interest and enjoyment in her face there where you can see it reaching her eyes especially in the areas that you can't control consciously that's a genuine expression of enjoyment or happiness or pleasure in regards to the hotel she genuinely did like the hotel despite everything that went on there let's keep watching and the way i see it is it's like the titanic you know when the titanic sailed off it was a beautiful ship oh you know everybody's thinking my god this is just like state of the art this gorgeous ship unsinkable you know well we all know what happened to the titanic still talking more about that you can see her emoting a little bit more but it's all centered around the hotel she's passionate about the hotel her face is showing the interest in the hotel but when we get on to the other subjects the more important subjects like the death of elise and lamb her face is blank this raises questions for people and i'm going to talk about possibilities as to why that is later sometimes it was scary we were faced with a lot of security and safety issues in the 10 years that i worked there there were thousands of 911 calls thousands because you know you need help so this is an area where you would expect to see some form of stress leakage some form of anxiety leakage but we don't there's some possibilities as to the reason for this one of which could simply be dissociation from the traumatic experience of having thousands of 9-1-1 called during a 10-year span she says also that there were 80 deaths on her watch while she was working there there were 80 deaths this is a very very difficult place to work and it's not showing up on any level non-verbally on her face could this be because of dissociation possibly could this be because of a condition like psychopathy or sociopathy maybe right now there's not enough to go off of so we just have to keep gathering data as best as we can i said well we have over 600 closets here you know i mean okay well let's look at them all they started asking questions like when does your garbage go out your employees what time do they start what doors they come in and out of and i started thinking to myself what oh my gosh what you think she left in a dumpster so we can see genuine recollection here when she's saying and then i said oh my gosh you think she could have left in a dumpster that side of things but during that moment where it's supposed to be more intense the only nonverbal leakage that we can see is that her eyes lightly widen that's it there's no other tells of disgust of fear anxiety or anything related to that incident it's still seeming to be fairly emotionless and people are catching on on this and being like what what is wrong with the manager of the cecil hotel let's keep watching to see if that ever unearths itself okay cameras are up is that all about here what do you think people imagine when they picture the manager of the cecil well unfortunately a lot of them were thinking there's some crazy creepy person behind the scenes that just doesn't care and is running just this hotel where all these bad things happen and it's not true and that's one of the reasons why i wanted to do the interview because i want the world to see that who was actually really running really cared about the hotel and was running it properly you know i don't know that that helps her case as much as she would like it to many people would see the hotel manager of something like the cecil hotel who has a long rich history of very dark instances being a creepy person and her saying no it's not a creepy person it's a person who really enjoyed their job and tried to run the hotel well and then that begs the question why would somebody really enjoy their job at a hotel that has 80 deaths and thousands of 9-1-1 calls in one of the darkest areas of los angeles it's an interesting concept and there might be some psychological reasons for that but we'll get to that in a minute but i would say there are a lot of like unique challenges when you are running a hotel like the cecil a lot came with the place there was a lip compression there with a little bit of disgust now this is an accurate reflection as to her emotions in regards to the cecil hotel she might have actually had some disdain for the darkness that was at that hotel at least to begin with these are the types of subconscious nonverbal displays that we cannot control they just happen and that appears to happen here so that can give us a little bit of a clue as to her opinion of the hotel [Music] it wasn't even first couple days in the job where the maintenance manager said that we had a problem i said what do you mean if you saw when she says what do you mean she narrows her eyes slightly and it's a very very slight movement and that would be considered a mini expression it's not involving the bottom half of her face it's involving the top half of her face and that indicates that she has some suspicion so that means that she has the ability to emote to display the emotions she's speaking of with her face which raises the question why does that not happen elsewhere when you would expect it to happen one of the um guests died at the hotel hard to process it's hard to process she says it's hard to process but you can see the small smile that's creeping in to her eyes just lightly her eyes have what many of you would attribute to a sparkle in them when talking about this there's an intensity there's an emotional interest in an emotional ramping up centered around this this had me raising some questions in my mind and i'll talk about some of the possible conclusions that i came to later on before working at the hotel i mean i'd never had any experience with a dead body or a coroner you know or even the police that was like a real eye-opener for me so she has a little possible nervous laugh there's a laugh in there when she's talking about a dead body and a coroner these aren't very light-hearted things but she does laugh now there's two possible reasons for that it could be a nervous laugh many people will laugh in the face of trauma so to speak it's an automatic and unwarranted reaction that many people feel is inappropriate but is very common there's the possibility that it's that and then there's another possibility that's a little bit darker that we'll address later on come to find out well this happens all the time little flash of contempt on the bottom of her face there well this happens all the time contempt is a moral or intellectual high ground expression that falls in line with what she's verbally saying so it's all synchronized this means that her body language is synchronized and it has the capability of being synchronized which means that if it comes desynchronized later on we need to really pay attention to it [Music] the maintenance manager he walked me through the entire hotel along the way you know he would just point and say someone died here someone died there suicides overdoses murders at one point i think i just asked him is there a room here that like maybe somebody hasn't died in i never got used to that never got used to that so she says i never got used to that she shakes her head that's accurate that's non-verbal alignment it's synchronized that's good to see but once again you can look at her eyes and nothing has changed they're flat they're expressionless if anything they're intense but as far as flashing any micro expressions of fear anxiety or any related negative emotion there's nothing that's very interesting to me let's keep watching you know because of skid row it was still pretty much the scariest part to be in los angeles but people were buying into you know this new idea downtown la was going to be hip especially where the cecil hotel is 7th in maine [Music] the hotel was sold for 26 million dollars in 2007. real big learning experience for me i'll say that i treated it like a corporate job it came to our attention that this hotel was designated as a residential hotel and you have restrictions i just feel like the cesa hotel has really suffered from you know a bad reputation people call it the suicide hotel death one of the reviews once was like the cecil hotels a place where dreams go to die and i'm just like really wow so she's flashing disgust around the corners of her mouth there while mixing it with a laugh and intensifying by leaning forward these are all centered around the hotel though once again there's only an interest in the hotel not the events they're in but this is all just centered around the hotel why is she so interested exclusively in the hotel rather than in the tragedies that occurred there it's very curious to me i mean come on i think it's fair that was when we invented stay on me so this is the little blip that i got to use as establishing somewhat of a baseline now some that you didn't get to see because i spent many hours outside of this just investigating her baseline to see if i could establish who she is and how she acts when she's not under stress or anxiety now obviously when you're being interviewed by someone like netflix there's gonna be stress and anxiety regardless so the information that i have albeit a fair amount is tainted it's not purely reliable it's not a completely reliable baseline so what i'm able to see from her is that she maintains a largely blank expression all the way across even during times of stressful recollection to stating business facts about the hotel down to what it was sold for her expression stays about the same the only times that she has shown nonverbal variants in her baseline has been centered around the hotel itself and trying to save face with that and during some of the darker subjects that she's speaking about i'm going to watch a little bit more here to be able to see how she responds to some very important questions and then at the very end of the video i'm going to kind of give you my educated opinion as to what her psychological state could be now i want to make something very clear before i continue i am not a psychologist and i am not diagnosing her this is simply based off of her nonverbal communication what i see and what answers it could provide that being said let's see how she handles some of the more important questions you
