hello guys and welcome back to another video and another video on the BMW 130 I and another video on the n 52 engine now that today I want to be talking about why your n 52 engine may be running rough why it may be idling rough why it may be misfiring and why it may not be making the power that you expect it to make now then when it comes to the N 52 engine running rough there is three or four main reasons why this can be the case now the first and probably the most common reason why your engine may be running rough is right down here at the front of the engine it is in fact the vanos solenoids now then there is two solenoids one for the intake side one for the exhaust side and if these fail if any of these two solenoids fail you will notice a significant loss in power these are responsible for advancing your timing these are responsible for the correct running of your whole vanos system if these fail you will not be making the peak power which in our case is two hundred and sixty-five brake horsepower so it is very very important that these are running correctly as they should now these typically fail because of a lack of oil changes these can get very very clogged up essentially with old oil and when they do those typically when they tend to fail now you can attempt to remove these and clean them out but to be honest you're probably not going to have the best success when these fail they typically tend to fail completely when these fail you will need to replace them with either some genuine or some genuine OEM equivalents now these are parts on this engine that you cannot replace for some cheap chinese copies you will not run the same as the genuine OEM BMW ones so then the vanna solenoids failing or not working as they should is probably the most common problem when it comes to your engine we were ruff now another problem could be inside of the oil filter housing cap now inside of the oil filter housing there is obviously the oil filter as you know but there is also an insert for the oil filter now this has a spring on it has a valve which pushes oil to the vanna system and if this is not working correctly or if this mechanism is not even in here at all which I've seen many many times you know people think it is just a throwaway part which it is not it is critical for this part to be in its place if this is not in place then you will not get the correct oil supply to the entire vaner system so when you're doing your oil changes or if somebody else is doing your oil changes for you make sure that you remove the mechanism with the oil filter take the old oil filter out clean the mechanism and then insert it into your new oil filter and then of course reinstall do not lose that part now another common cause for the rough running of your own 52 engine is with the vamo system again it is actually with the vanos check valves often known as the vanos filters they are located on the exhaust side of the engine you can actually get better access from the wheel arch it's actually too small valves that have a screen filter built into them which you can attempt to clean or you can actually just go ahead and replace them now again these work together with your vana solenoids says very important for these to be clean for the smooth running of your whole van our system and I think while I'll actually do at some point as well is remove these and take a look at what they look like because if the inside of my rock cover is anything to go by then they may not look the best to be honest and the final common cause why your engine may be running rough or misfiring is to do with your ignition system so of course your spark plugs and your ignition coils with this beam s6 in the engine obviously there is six of each and if any one of your spark plugs or ignition coils fails or doesn't work as it should then it may cause you to have a misfire now obviously we know spark plugs don't last forever so they should be changed periodically I would recommend every 30 to 40 thousand miles you know good spark plugs are very very cheap so in my opinion just change them periodically and then you should never have any issues when it comes to the ignition coils I would recommend changing them periodically as well but probably not as common as every thirty to forty thousand miles you're probably good every one hundred thousand miles or so but when it comes to premature failure of either these spark plugs or the ignition calls themselves there's actually a reason for that so underneath this engine cover we actually have a Valvetronic motor that works together with the rest of the van our system now sometimes the ignition caused and these spark plugs can actually fail prematurely and the main cause of this is oil getting down into the spark plug wells so it's sometimes when you miss oil into the filler cap and it runs down here underneath the cover runs down into the ignition caused and the spark plugs and sometimes it's actually to do with something that you can't see with the engine cover on underneath here there is the valve tronic motor that obviously works together with the fan off system and there is a gasket on it that seals it to the rocker cover now sometimes this gasket likes to fail as well and so drips oil down into the spark plug holes as well now another reason why your engine may not be running smoothly why it may have a rough idle where the revs are bouncing up and down it could be to do with your mass airflow sensor which is this sensor just here it is located on this elbow which goes from the airbox to the throttle body and this typically can get dirty if you have a dirty air filter or if you have an air filter that it's not sufficiently filtering the air coming into the intake or if you have air filter that needs to be oiled you have you know gave it a clean and then you have re old it but you have went way overboard and put way too much oil arm that can cause the mass airflow sensor to not read correctly so it may just be worth pulling that out and giving it clean with some contact cleaner or a mass airflow sensor cleaner and see if that cures your uneven idle now if you notice that your engine's appears to be running as it should you know doesn't have a rough idle but you have noticed a loss in the low down talk then that could be down to your dis valves one of them could have failed now obviously with this being the 30i engine this has the three-stage manifold with e2 disavows but you can check these with is that if you have this doubt go ahead and remove them ensure that they are running as they should and just check that there is no play in the valve because if the butterfly valve fails is that they can actually end up failing and falling into your intake manifold so the disavow itself is essentially like a butterfly valve and because it is only plastic it can actually end up coming loose and then falling into your intake manifold now typically they don't tend to make their way down into your intake port but if the valve itself you know broke up or if the pin holding the valve in you know managed to break up then it can make its way down into your intake ports and then you are looking at you know possibly complete engine failure you know at the very least you're looking at damaged valves and the damaged cylinder so you do not want these disavows to fail now you can go ahead and test these valves with this D you can physically remove them inspect them make sure there's no play and you can actually run a test using esta and to ensure that they're actually running as they should or you can actually just go ahead and replace them and I would recommend replacing these after 100,000 miles or so so it's definitely worth checking your disavows every once in a while okay this has been the common problems and causes for your BMW n52 to ruin rough to have a rough idle to misfire hope this video has have been somewhat helpful I hope you have enjoyed it I've got a lot more videos to come on this engine I will be actually swapping out and replacing a lot of the parts that I have mentioned today so if you are you know interested in that just you know stay tuned I hope you have enjoyed this one please give a like leave a comment down below subscribe if you have not already done so and I will see you all in that next one peace [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music]
