all right so this is what we're gonna do today we're gonna show you what to look for when your BMW e39 e46 p53 with the in 54 and 52 tu or even in m-52 engine is rough starting at cold start as rough idling at cold start there you go okay so I didn't want these videos a couple years ago and people literally asked me this almost on the daily basis and I always tell them well I have a video up like can you send me a link got to go find it I'm like you know what maybe you need to update it so here we are so alright get up in the morning go start your car up and a rough idles for a few minutes or thirty seconds or a minute and then it goes it cleans up idles fine now the biggest misconception about this is that the vanos unit needs to be rebuilt as will i found out over the years that usually is not the cause of rough idle on a cold start I usually just be a general power loss maybe a little rattling noise up front that kind of thing okay the very first thing I would check in this situation would be to pull off the cover already got the nuts off of this one and you're more than likely I make a different light here hold on alright if you could see any better out on you get some different lights in here we'll see okay we're gonna go ahead and first thing we do is pull the coil packs out this has a new style so if your car's 2000 T were newer I get that without getting a Dan screwdriver or not hold on all right the cars 2002 or newer you have these style cool packs Jesus come on and these are the push in style so the rough idle could be a bad coil pack no matter which style you have the bolt Center push in on the push in you can't really see anything wrong with them on the bolt in you usually can see a little bit of white I think I have one sitting right here actually yeah so we have all three styles here we have to push in which just took out the engine we have the Bri me the Round Top the Bolton style and then we have the boss push it or bolt in square so this actually is bring me tube on it but it's actually a Polish as the general rule of thumb pre 2002 these are about these are the best ones you can get these are work and you can see you can tell if these are misfiring see a little bit of white around the bottom of it on this style and on the top you can see where it's been arcing usually that coil packs on this way out if you see that so if your coil packs not bad and how you tell if you're getting this fire code or not if you're getting a code you can switch it with a different one to see if a follow cetera cetera et cetera now on a thirty nines that have the bolt in coil packs they like to get rainwater in four and five cylinders so you want to pull those out and make sure there's no rain water or oil in any of the coil pack valleys of the spark plug valleys any of those options could cause rough idle rough cold starts the next thing is spark plugs your spark plugs are really freaking nasty that could also cause it and those some of you guys are saying oh my god the head guest is blowing look at that car the head gas is blown every BMWs like that this has a brandy see CV on it it's not blowing I promise you you get that when you don't let it run very long you start it and turn it off so let's move this over to the side we'll keep going here like this videos all over the damn place the next cold-start issue is the c cv or pc v on these is actually under the intake and you see the hard hose that goes from the valve cover it goes down the PCV you have to take the intake off to get to it that has a unit that sits under there and it has vacuum mines to go down to it that are also these plastic lines if any of that stuff is leaking that'll also cause rough idle lean codes rough cold start and such also your throttle body boot this is the 530 so it has the big boot as this goes down it goes onto the throttle body and then also goes on to one of these guys right here so i had laying on the bench this is the cold start valve the cold start valve system here just like that right under right over the throttle body and it has a rubber boot that goes to the intake boot down to this if any of these rubber boots here have rips in them that could cause that and lane codes and this fires and all that etc the next thing is this valve itself if the cold start valve is stuck if it's dirty this on which way it's stuck if it's stuck open it's kinda cold start hard if it stuck closed at a cold start fine what's the engine warms up it's gonna be all balding causing issues you should be able to shake it and hear that rattle if you cannot hear that rattle inside there it is stuck take a little carb cleaner you just spray down in the hole let it sit sprayed out again until it's all clean that's how you do those now the next thing i've seen some issues with the mass airflow sensor which is right here they could be some pretty funky stuff we had some e30 knives in the past I had no codes and it would cause cold start issues that's probably not as common though I would say but still as a possibility the next thing the next thing there's actually three things there's three sensors there is a intake camshaft sensor which lays down behind this right here and that could go bad cause the car just to die not restart it could cause cold start issues there is a zooss camshaft sensor where we're right here and that can go bad usually if those go bad they throw error codes but not all the time and then of course under the intake as a lot of you guys know there is a crankshaft I think I have one right here yeah so here's the three sensors off one of these cars we have the zooss camshaft sensor which is pointed out to you this goes bad it gets like a blister on top or just physically just goes bad without warning here's the intake camshaft sensor on the driver's side and that goes bad same way and here is the crankshaft sensor it's under the intake and the crankshaft sensor a lot of times you can see this one has a little bit you see a bubble on the top you can see it's bubbled out just a little bit maybe you can see it on counter maybe you can't that does that that causes it to get incorrect timing and causes hard start or just dying at random so any of those sensors can also cause this but like I said your most common is going to be a coil pack or the idle valve or a rip in the boot I mean it's pretty much about it other than that this car doesn't have it so I can't even show you but there is a lane right here nice thing about this job you're looking for something to show somebody you're only about arm's reach away to show somebody to grab the part here is the secondary air valve and that beauty bolts over here you can see we have gyro to tune on it so we have a block off plate on it and that's all deleted but there is a vacuum line that goes off this guy so now I can have it I think this is the e60 so it doesn't have it but all the 39:36 is have vacuum line comes off this guy and goes around the back of the intake to the solenoid and thats Illinois has another little vacuum on it goes to the intake itself and there's little caps on the back of the intake little vacuum caps so if any of those vacuum mines are crumbled or disconnected or the vacuum caps are blowing off or rotted that could cause that like I said the east 60s don't have that set up they don't have the sill a note or anything back there they did away with that newer years this engines from oh five and it's in an old one car so it's retrofitted to the new stock coil packs so on and so on I guess for cold start that's pretty much it without getting to a bunch of other crap you guys probably don't care about that's gonna be your co-star tissues it's gonna be one of those on an EM 52 and 54 or in 52 tu no doubt or in 56 so hopefully that solves a little bit up for you and Mike be confusing for some of you guys without having just taking all the parts off and showing you which it kind of did anyway hopefully gives you enough a general idea about it if not maybe we'll come back to this topic some point in time in the future hope it helped we'll see you guys soon talk to you later
