in this final installment of the series we're going to be creating this text box with a blurred background this was the initial inspiration for the whole series when the question was asked in discord how to make a blurred background on an editable text and title [Music] okay just break with tradition i'm going to do the usage first so basically bring in a clip it doesn't matter what clip it is decide where you want your title to be cut either side and then come to your effects titles and drag the box blur onto your clip and away you go you're already all set up and all running as i said before if you right click and render cache fusion effect filter this will cache the effect for you to allow smoother playback obviously anytime you make changes to it it's going to re-cache it but you'll get the general idea like so in the inspector come to effects and you've got all the various parameters that we can change so we can change the font we can change the text size line spacing tracking etc to get the desired look what you also notice is every time i make changes to the text the box is changing to encompass the text um we can change the thickness of the text outline make it as thick or as thin as you want we can change the color then we come down to the border and again we can change the color of the border we can change the border start position so the way it's set up at the minute the border starts at the top in the middle here and expands out around either side if you want it to go from the edge or the corner you can easily change this value to make it start in a different position but it will go and then join up at the middle so you can change that around and you can also change the overall blur strength so that's basically what we have as our blurred background as i said in the intro it was this blurred background that prompted me to think how do we do this you need to have your footage to get the blur and you can't do that with an ordinary title as i've said before doing it this way as an effect rather than a title we're using the footage and we get the blur so that's that so on to making it i've got a clip here much as i said in the last video this is going to be animated so i try and keep the clip as short as possible it may just be my system but i find that anime curves stretch really well but they just don't shrink it goes all haywire if you shrink them so keep it short so this is at two seconds come into fusion now this window here has three expressions in it they are the expressions that are used to make the dynamic box and i'll come back to those as and when we need them so the first thing we're going to need is the blur node because that's what we're working on so bring a blur node in and take an output from your media in into your blur and then you can merge this back onto your output now at the minute if we crank the blur up you can see it's affecting the whole image so the first thing we need to do is mask that to our rectangle so bring in a rectangle and for the time being just drop it on like so that's started to constrain it next thing we want is our text so we're going to bring in a text node and we're going to put some text in it like so now we're going to use this text as a mask for this blur like so and you can barely see it but if i crank the blur right up so we can see what's happening and then we zoom in you can see that the text is here and blurred what we want is for the text to be clear and for the box to be blurred so come to your merge node go to settings and just tick apply mask inverted and now what you end up with is this a blurred area with clear text if you want solid text all you need to do is take a second output and just merge it onto the merge that's already in place and you've got solid text but for the sake of this particular title the one i i'm i made i didn't do that i had clear text obviously if your text is bigger it becomes easier to differentiate like so now the thing you noticed with the demonstration is that when i adjusted the text the box stayed proportionate to it and to do that this is where our expressions come in i'll leave these on the screen for a minute so that you can sort of copy them down pause the video take your time they need to be exactly as i've written them here they're all case sensitive the various brackets and parentheses and minus all have to be exact so take your time write them down and then start the video again so where are we going to use these we're going to use them on our rectangle node so select the rectangle and you've got width and height i'm going to put expressions on both of those so right click on width expression and what i'm going to do is i'm going to copy this width expression into this field like so and what you notice is that the box shrinks to match the text now we're going to do the same for the height and again what you notice is the box shrinks down so now if we adjust our text the box grows and shrinks with it basically what these texts or what these expressions are doing is they are taking one edge of the text and subtracting it from the other end to give a value and then the figures at the end so times point one one 1.05 just adds a bit of padding so that they're not butted straight up against the text again times 1.17 adds a little bit of padding top and bottom so they're not butting against the text so the next thing we're going to do is add our border and to do that select your rectangle command c to copy click away and then command shift or shift command and v and this paste is in and this pastes an instance of our rectangle so at the minute this node is exactly the same as that node what we now need to do is de-instant certain properties so that we can work on them independently so select your instance rectangle come to the inspector and you want to d instance border width so right click on border width the instance you notice that the green box disappears to say it's not linked anymore you need to right click on the word solid and the instance and then you can uncheck it so that we can now make a border which you can't see because it's not connected so we're going to bring in a merge node no yes we are we're going to pipe this merge into the background and we're going to pipe our rectangle instance into the foreground and now you get your um border so as i say you can play with your border width and make it whatever size you want now what i did was i came up with an expression for this border width which meant it stayed proportionate when the box grew or shrank that expression is this top one here so basically it's taking the width of the box and it's multiplying it by .01 which basically gives a thin line so same process right click expression and then i'm going to copy this expression the border thickness expression and pop it in the border width box so now you've got your border width that stays proportionate to your box so if the box gets bigger this border will also get bigger conversely if you make the box small the board shrinks as well so it stays proportionate okay so far so good what else did we have the other thing we had was an outline to our text to make it a little bit clearer to do that select your text node command c to copy click away shift command v to paste so you've got an instance of your text which you can now pipe back onto your and again we want to make some differences in this and the differences we're going to make are in the shading tab so again we're going to de-instant stuff and the stuff we're going to de-instance our opacity you'll see why we're doing that later on appearance once you've d instance appearance you can make it an outline we're going to d instance thickness i'm going to d instance outside only and we're going to d instance the color group so now we can change the thickness of our lines around our text like so just to make them a bit more subtle and if you want to you can change the color and that's the basic title set up now if you want it just as a title like that that's grounded you can have it like that what i did was i animated it to sort of appear and disappear to do that i used anime curves on various parameters so the first one was the blur so if you want to animate it follow along hit your blur set your blur size to where you want sort of default to be i think i had about 10. right click on blur size modify with anime curves and go into your modifiers tab now at the minute if you play through you start with no blur by the time you get to the end you've got a big blur because this is saying 100 and we don't want 100 we want 10. we don't want it to do that what we wanted to do is for the blur to come in hold and then go out at the end so much like we did with the animation on the glass text we're going to set up a custom curve so change source to duration change curve to custom we're going to need to add our two points and we're going to set them up so that this first point is at 0.25 and has a value of 1. we're going to set this second point 0.75 with a value of 1 and now we're going to set this last one with a value of what uh at one with a value of zero like so now as we play through our blur comes in it holds for the duration and then goes out again the next thing i animated was the outline of the text so to do that come to your instance text go to opacity remember we d instance opacity right click modify with anime curve and we set the same curve on it so source duration curve custom and then our all points so this one here 0.25 one this one point seven five and one and your final one one and zero so now the blur and the text both fade out the final part of the animation is our border and to do that we need to come back to our instance rectangle we're going to right click d instance position and d instance length and now we're going to add anime curves to both of these so we'll do the position first modify with an curve and then we'll do length modify with an m curve now if you come into your modifier if you can't see all the writing so your box may be a bit short just pull it out a little bit so you can see what you're doing so we'll do the length first the length is basically going to go from zero to one back to zero so it's the same um [Music] verb that we've been using so source duration custom curve exactly the same points so 0.25 and 1. 0.75 and 1 1 0 so now as we play through our line will grow now this one's going to be slightly different it's a similar curve so duration custom again your extra two points this time we're going to start at the very first point down in this bottom left corner so you want that zero but you want it at 1. now these two points you're going to have at 0.25 and 0. and point seven five and zero and your last point stays at one and one so now at the minute we have this effect where it wraps around from this right hand edge what i wanted to do is wrap evenly so go up and over and down and over at the same time to do that we're going to need to play with our scale and offset so we're going to set the scale to 0.5 now what happens is that we're growing from this point on the left and coming over and under in the demo i do at the top to get it at the top change your offset to minus 0.25 when we come to build our macro we'll make this offset available as one of the controls and what that lets you do is change your starting position so you can put it anywhere you want nat is basically your um blurred box title done all you need to do is set it up how you want your default to be you can leave it plain like this or you can change your font change whatever just for now leave it as it is one more thing i did forget if you want to change this color border here you're going to need to put a background node in so bring the background node pipe your instance rectangle into the mask of the background and then the background into the merge you notice at the minute the board has turned black because that's what color the background is just make your background white again we publish these controls and you can change the color of your background okay so we've got it set up we've got it animated there's one thing i didn't do that we should have done and that is to tie the box or the rectangle and instance rectangle to the text so that if the text is moved around the boxes come with it to do that straightforward select your text node and in the inspector hit this little pin and check the layout now select your rectangle come to center right click expression and grab the little plus sign down until you see your text center and now if we select our text and move it around the box comes with it what that allows you to do is if you shrink down your text like so you can drag it and chuck it in the corner or wherever you want it so macro so press and hold the command key or the control key and start selecting your nodes so select text instance text instance rectangle background and blur now with your finger still on the ctrl key hit the a key and this selects all your nodes now with your fingers still on the control key start deselecting the nodes that we don't want in the macro what you end up with is all these nodes in the middle are now selected right click macro create macro give it a name and now we can start working through selecting which controls we want available in the edit tab so we don't need anything from so in text one at the minute we don't need anything from the image the text we want style text font and font style size tracking and line spacing close down your little text and in the layout we want center and then you can close down your text node in your instance text we want the color and the line thickness so we don't need image text layout or transform we want shading and we want thickness and outside only and then we come a little bit lower down you've got color so we're gonna change that to text color that's your red value select tip green blue alpha i don't think we need anything curves instance rectangle don't need anything in instant rectangle i'm fairly sure let me have a look if you click on your nodes while you've got your macro window open it puts the node in your inspector and you can see what if anything you want to change and i don't think there's anything we want to change oh yes there is so we need the modifier because we're going to change this value the offset now i think if we close instance rectangle the first anim curve tab underneath is the one we want and you can check it by looking for this value here minus 0.25 which appears here on this offset so you can check that change this to i don't know order start so now we can adjust this value and change where we start the border don't need anything in these background we are going to not have anything in image but in color we want color so border color again that's your red value green blue alpha don't strictly need alpha unless you want to get rid of your border altogether but we'll keep it in again blur what we want to do is change the blur size but we can't do it from here because that's controlled by the anim curve which is this value here so what we need to do is change the anim curve again and it's this first annum curve and what we want is scale which is 10 so this is this value here you've got the 10 you've got the scale what we can do is change that to blur strength and then nothing else to change so we can save it so again come to file save as group and then like i said before by default fusion tries to save to the macro folder but you need to go back a couple of layers in your folder structure so if you come to davinci resolve you can then see fusion scroll down you get templates you get edit and you get effects generators titles and transitions and we want effects again if you're on 17.4 if you hit new folder call it titles and save into that it will appear in its own folder on the edit tab if you're not on 17.4 it will appear amongst all your other effects but that's the way it goes again i'm not going to save it because i've already done it but you'd hit save close this down and then if you come to templates edit effects as i say if you're on 17.4 you can have your little titles folder and it's there you may or may not have to restart resolve for it to appear in the edit tab it seems to be sometimes you don't sometimes you do but again come to your effects library go to effects open the little down arrow got your titles and now you've got your box blur ready to go and then it's just a case of grabbing your clip and you can have this title on for as long or as short as you want a couple of cuts grab your title and drop it on and away you go all done from here as i say you've got your effects you've got all your various settings that you can change and job is a gooden as they say so yeah i hope the series was sort of useful um i was quite pleased when i sort of had the eureka moment and worked how to do it and hopefully you'll find it useful as well so basically anything any effect or any title that needs to affect the footage directly this is how you can do it you can get away with it so you can add your blurs you can add color correctors you can do all sorts of stuff to the footage in a title just don't save it in the tiles folder save it in the effects folder and make sure you only have one input and one output if that means using a pipe router so be it cool okay i will leave you with that please feel free to like subscribe and hit the notification bell and i will catch you on the next one cheers you
