to come to your house. I don't know if you're watching me tonight on the treadmill or you're in the kitchen, or you could even be in bed early, but wherever you're watching me, I believe that God's got a Word for you. We're going to turn straight
into the Scripture tonight. And we're going to go to Psalm 85. And I love this Psalm. And I think you're going
to get fired up as well. The Scripture says: I'm going to read that again. Will you not revive us again, I love that Psalm with a passion, I know that's like 13 verses, and we read the whole Psalm, but come on, what else are
you going to do tonight than read the Word of God. Now, we're not sure who
really wrote this Psalm. But since it is written
for the sons of Korah, we know that it was probably sung. And it was used in prayer
services in ancient Israel. So it was part of their liturgy; that's how important this Psalm is. And most scholars believe that it was probably
written when God's people had returned to Jerusalem. They'd been in 70 years exile
under Babylonian captivity. And so they would have been excited to be coming back to Jerusalem, finally getting out of captivity, finally coming home. And they thought, I have no doubt, that they would return back to their glorious pre-exilic life thinking things would be back to normal. But instead, they came
back to a very ruined city. The temple had been in ruins, and it was, they were surrounded by
enemies all around them that hated them. So they thought they were coming back to this glorious, normal
life that they had before they were sent
into exile in Babylon. Instead they came back to
rubble, desolation, enemies, and nothing was like they
thought it was going to be. They thought it was going to be one way, but it was an entirely different way. So the children of God, they found themselves
incredibly discouraged, or disappointed, disillusioned. They were feeling this
sense of hopelessness. They'd lost faith. I wonder if anybody else besides me has felt a little bit like that in 2020? It's kind of the year that we all thought it was going to go one way. And here we are. It's not exactly what we expected, that I remember leaving Colour
in March earlier this year. And there was a certain way that I thought this year was going to go. And here we are in August 2020, and this was the year of 20-20 vision. We were all seeing this
year a certain way. Well, the year has come out a certain way: it's just not how most of us were expecting it to turn out. It doesn't quite look like we thought it was going to look like. So many of us, we had dreams about where our careers would be, what our education would look like, what our relationships would look like, what our businesses would look like, what our finances would look like, how our health would be, or the health of our loved ones, or what our travel plans
would be and our vacations, or our ministries would look like. We had conceived that there would be certain opportunities and doors, and we thought 2020 would look one way. But instead, looking at August, it
looks entirely different. So many of us did not anticipate the disorientation we would be feeling, the disappointment in some areas, perhaps, the disillusionment
or the discouragement. We'd hoped for one thing
at the start of 2020. And here we are in August. We had hoped it was going
to be a certain way. This is the dilemma that we're confronting
right here in this Psalm. When we think about the children of God had hoped it would be one way, and they came back to
Jerusalem to all of this ruin, and it was an entirely different way. Do you remember on the road to Emmaus in Luke 24:21, the two disciples. Jesus had been crucified. Jesus had died. They didn't know that He
had risen from the dead. When He died they thought
that all their dreams, all their plans for
redemption had just died. They had hoped that He was the Messiah, and they thought this is all over. He wasn't the guy, it didn't happen. And remember Jesus was walking with them as they were going from
Jerusalem to Emmaus. And the Scripture says in Luke
24:21, they said to Jesus: So because of their hopelessness, because of this sense of despondency, because they had expected
it to be a certain way, but it was another way,
they miss the very fact that Jesus was right there with them. Because they had focused on
what they had hoped to see, but they didn't see what
they had hoped to see, they had missed the fact
that the very thing, really, that they had hoped to
see, which was Jesus, was with them right in the
midst of their disappointment, right in the midst of
their discouragement, right in the midst of
their disillusionment. They missed Jesus because they had hoped it
would be a certain way. Our world right now, Church, it's feeling hopeless. And you know, when, what you had hoped for doesn't come to pass, you can begin to think
that God has left you, when in fact God is with you. God is walking alongside you in the midst of this situation that maybe doesn't look in August like we thought it was going
to look way back in January. God is still with us. He's our very present
help in our time of need. The presence of God is with us. He is faithful. Scripture says He will never leave us, He will never forsake us. Our God who promised is faithful. God is with us in the midst of it. But oftentimes when we hope one thing, we can miss God, because it doesn't look like we thought it was going to look. In the midst of this sense of hopelessness
and disappointment, the Psalmist pens, what I
call a blueprint for revival. That's what Psalm 85 is. So tonight Church, I'm dropping into your living room, I'm dropping into your home, and I want to speak about revival. I want to unpack this
blueprint for revival, because I believe right now, as the Church of Jesus
Christ on the earth, we are on the edge of the greatest revival that we have ever seen. We are being set up for revival. When God's people had
come back to Jerusalem, they had hoped life was going to go back to their pre-exilic normal. But the fact is, their situation in the
natural, it looked hopeless, the people felt helpless. and the Psalmist doesn't give up. In the midst of these seemingly
desperate circumstances, he writes this blueprint and he says, "We are going to have revival." So what's the first thing that he does? The first thing that the Psalmist does is he remembers the past. If we read verses one to four, he looks at the rubble of the past, and what he does is he reminds himself of the faithfulness of God in the past. He reminds himself, "God came through for me in the past, and He's going to come
through for us again." We see this in all these past tense verbs right there in verse one to four. He says to God, "You were favourable. You restored, You forgave, You covered, You withdrew, You turned." Remember, he's talking to God. He said, "You did this before. God, you were faithful before, You showed up before." I remember when all of this
came down with COVID-19 and we had a big global meeting on Zoom, like all of us are on
Zoom now, with our staff. And we've got staff in 20 cities, in 15
countries around the world. And I said to everyone, right at the outset at the first meeting, I said, "We are not going to panic. We don't need to panic because I know that God has
already been faithful to us. I became a follower of Jesus 30 years ago, and God has never left me,
God has never forsaken me. God has been so faithful." I reminded our team
that God had made a way when there was no way. When A21 was just this dream concept, God made a way, God opened doors, God brought provision. A21 has always been a miracle story. And you know what, I was
saying, we are being set up to have another miracle
chapter in our story. Our whole journey has been a faith journey where God has made the
impossible possible. this season is another opportunity for God to prove Himself faithful. We didn't bring ourselves here. Jesus brought us here. And the same God that brought
us here will take us there. Church, I want to remind you tonight, the same God that has brought you this far is the same God that is going to bring
us through this season, is the same God that's going to take us
through to the other season. I know everything's changed. But Hebrews 13:8 says
that Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever. He does not change. He is still faithful. Do you remember in the story
of the children of Israel when they were crossing the River Jordan in the Book of Joshua 4:1-7. And in that whole story, the children of Israel were told to pick up some memorial stones. Collect these stones, to remind yourself when you get to the other side, to tell your children on the other side, that your God is faithful, that your God turned up and He pushed back that River Jordan. When it looked impossible, God made away. When there was no way, God made away. Some of us, it is time to pick up some of those memorial stones, and remember that your
God has been faithful. Remember the faithfulness
of God in your past. Because if we remember the
faithfulness of God in the past, we will live faithfully in
the present and in the future. I was thinking about that as I was preparing this
message for our church. Of course it's so dear to my heart. It was on a Sunday night on
the 29th of January 1989, that a friend took me from
14 Jackson Road, Lalor Park, up the Sunnyholt Road and
right up to the top there, to Castle Hill, into an old
warehouse, where I truly there became a fully, fully devoted
follower of Jesus Christ. Now the God that was faithful to me there, He's the God that's been faithful to me for the last 31 years. Since I walked into that warehouse, I've seen God do miracles. I've seen God bring Nick into my life, bring my daughters into my life. I've seen what God's done with A21. I've seen God take this
girl from Lalor Park and do what He has done with my life. That same God that has been faithful to me all of these decades, is the same God that's with me in the midst of a global pandemic, is the same God that's
going to take me through and you through and take
us to the other side. Our God is faithful. I wonder Church, can you make a list in this season of the faithfulness of God in your past? Has He done anything
for anyone besides me? Has He saved anyone? Has He delivered anyone? Has He healed anyone? Has He provided for anyone? Have you spent most of this year looking at what you've
lost, what you don't have, where you feel God hasn't come through, and you have forgotten to remember the faithfulness of God, the goodness of God, the provision of God. The first thing the Psalmist does while he's looking at the rubble of the Jerusalem Temple
down to the ground, and looking at the walls of
the city, totally devastated, surrounded by enemies all around, the first thing he does is remember the faithfulness of God. In August Church, it's time for us to begin to remember the miracle story, the
faithfulness of God. I remember walking into that warehouse and being part of the youth
ministry under Pastor Donna. And we would get together
and we would pray. We would pray, and started a schools ministry when there were no schools ministries, started a youth centre before there was a HYS
that became the HYS, started doing outreach to community. We prayed the things that we see today, a church all over the world, a church impact, that we
prayed and believed God. I've seen God do it. And we see the faithfulness of God then. He has not brought us
this far to leave us here. The second thing the Psalmist does, the Psalmist acknowledges the present. And I love that from
verses four through nine, the Psalmist acknowledges the reality of their
present circumstances. He doesn't deny that
the temple is in ruins. He doesn't deny that the city is in ruins. He does not minimise the situation. He does not deny the situation. He doesn't dismiss or ignore
the situation in any way. Church, we're not denying the reality of what's happened in 2020. We're not denying the reality of COVID-19, the impact of that around the globe, the loss, the grief, the heartache, the fear, the shock, the sickness, the death, the missed graduations,
the missed weddings, the parties, the funerals, the opportunities that have been missed. Yet in the midst of what
seems to be the rubble, the destruction, I wonder if we like the Psalmist could ask of God exactly
what he asked of God. In verse four, he says, "Restore us again." He's asking the Lord, "Would You return us back
to our original condition? God, would You restore us again?" He says, "You're the expert. You made us, so You
know how we are created to function most effectively. So God would You restore us again? We are Your children. We are favoured by You,
we are blessed by You. God, would You restore us again? Can You make us who we're supposed to be?" He then says to Him in verse five: "Revive us again. Lord, will You not revive us again?" And tonight, as I'm talking
about a blueprint for revival, this would be my prayer
for us as Hillsong Church. It's the prayer that I've had on my lips over this last month, going, "God, would You not revive us again? God only You can revive us." Revival is sovereign, it
comes from the hand of God. You can't just schedule it, but you ask God, "Would
You not revive us?" Can we not acknowledge, some of us have been spiritually dry, and discouragement and disappointment. Disillusionment can sap
the life out of you. So there needs to be a restoration of spiritual
life to God's people. The people need to rejoice in God again, get passionate about God Himself. The Scripture says,
"Would You not revive us that we may rejoice in You?" Jesus always was the goal. The one thing of this season, of things being stripped from us, is God's saying, "Am I enough for you? Would you rejoice in me? Do I have everything that you need? It's in me. Would you fall in love with me again?" Would we get passionate
about the Word again, passionate about worship again, passionate about holiness again, passionate about the
mission of the Church again, passionate about prayer, passionate about souls being saved, passionate about justice
rolling through our streets. What happens is when hope is deferred then disappointment and
discouragement, or fear, or chaos, division, loss, grief, pain, they become the headlines of our story. And that means we need reviving. So many right now across the world are feeling depleted,
going through the motions, feeling dry, feeling
barren, feeling exhausted. We've been so bombarded it's like you cannot stick your head above water. There's been COVID, and of course, all the things that have been
happening around the globe to do with racial injustice and so much pain and so much loss and so much suffering. And just this week alone
challenges all over the globe. It's like we cannot awaken without there being some
sense of major global issues happening in 2020. So when we look at the condition
of our world and nation, I think it's time for
all of us to ask God, "Will You not revive us again?" Again. I love that word again. "Will You not revive us again?" Because God has done it before Church. So we're saying to Him,
"Would You do it again?" Do you remember, Scripture
is full of revivals? Moses brought the children
of Israel out of Egypt, and we saw that great revival
in the Book of Exodus. We saw the revival in the Book of Jonah, when Nineveh turned around. We saw the revival under King
Josiah, powerful revival. Revival in the New Testament
under John the Baptist. Of course, the great revival at
Pentecost in Acts chapter two, the revival in Samaria
in Acts chapter eight, the revival in Caesarea
in Acts chapter 10, the first revival amongst the Gentiles, the revival in Antioch in Acts chapter 11, the revival in Europe in Acts chapter 16. Then of course the reformation in America. There was the first, then the second, and the third great awakening. Revival spread the nation in 1902. In Melbourne, Australia
we had a great revival. In 1904, there was the Welsh Revival. Of course the Azusa
Street Revival in 1906. In 1949 in Los Angeles, Billy Graham, he spoke
and revival spread out. 1968, the Jesus Movement
in Southern California. Of course the 1980s,
the Vineyard Movement, 1994, the Toronto Blessing. Revival is part of our history. Over and over again in history when it seems like spiritual life, our spiritual life is at
the point of extinction, guess what happens? God steps in, and out of His great love,
grace, compassion and mercy, He revives us again. It's a precedent in Scripture. It's a precedent throughout history. God's people need reviving. Around the world where people claim that the Church is dying and
people are leaving the Church or the Church is irrelevant,
God says, "Oh no, I'm coming to revive you again." God steps in, and He breathes on us again. He revives us again. We start to wake up to
His love and His presence, and we have an insatiable
appetite for His Word. We want to live righteous and holy lives. We lose our appetites for
things that are not godly. Repentance becomes rampant because it's God kindness
that leads us there. We tear down our idols and we want Jesus to be Lord of all. We're not bored with God or church, but we're alive to Christ and His purpose. We care about our communities. I mean, throughout revival history, we saw child labour laws repealed, and abolition, the abolition of slavery, and a decrease in crime and addiction. You can see that historically. Wherever you see true
revivals hit a nation what happens is, God gives us a supernatural love for people and unity. Our streets are filled
with the love of God. And that's expressed through His people. And multitudes and multitudes are saved. Won't You revive us again. We're due for another revival, Church. Revivals and awakenings in the past, they've almost always occurred in times of great disruption
and social upheaval. Wouldn't you agree with me? Across the world, we are in
times of great disruption and great social upheaval. In my lifetime I've never
known anything like this. That means we're primed for revival. The greatest revival Scripture, I believe, in the Bible is Acts 3:20, where it says, times of refreshing come from the Lord. And I think if we're all honest, we need some refreshing. So many are feeling weary. When the people of God were actually living in Babylonian exile, I love it because the Book of Isaiah, there's a great Scripture, Isaiah 40:28-31, it says: So the midst of their exile, God says, "What I want you to do is wait on me." Those that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength. That's not like a passive waiting. And that's what we must make sure we don't do in this season. Some of us feel like we're in exile. We're like, "Okay, when are
things going to open up? When are things going to change?" We feel like we're in exile. But the Scripture says,
"Look, if you wait upon God," and that waiting is an
active pursuit in this text, it's a pressing in, it's a laying a hold of
God, it's seeking God. It says those that would
wait upon the Lord, that would press in and pursue Him, what He's going to do
is renew their strength. He gives strength to the faint, to the weary and to the exhausted. And I love that because if you're feeling weary and you're feeling exhausted, you've got room for God to come in. He only gives strength to people that feel weak or exhausted, because if you're full of
yourself, you don't need God. You don't need His strength 'cause you've got your own strength. I love that word renew. It means to exchange. So what happens, Church, is we need a divine
exchange in this season. We need faith for our fear. We need trust for doubt. We need peace for anxiety. We need freedom for bondages. We need sorrow for joy. We need dancing for mourning. We need strength for weakness. We need love for anger. And we need hope for despair. We need a divine exchange. And the Bible says we will
mount up on wings like eagles, run and not grow weary,
walk and not faint. We're gonna soar like eagles, even during this season,
I believe that we can as the people of God filled
with the Spirit of God, empowered by the Spirit of God, the same Spirit that
raised Jesus from the dead lives on the inside of us. You know wind resistance, it takes the eagles above the storm. They don't flap their
wings, they just glide. They trust the wind to lift them. I wonder if in this season
we could trust God's strength to lift us, to lift us. Why? So that glory, verse nine
says, may dwell in our land. That's the point of it all. It's all for the renown of Jesus Christ. It's not just about us. It's not just about cities being awakened. It's about the glory of God
in the streets of the city. When a heart is revived
a new person emerges which impacts a home and
that impacts a street and that impacts a community. And that then impacts a city. I'm talking about the people of God awaken to the love of God, living on purpose to fulfil the mission of God in a lost and a broken world. And the Psalmist envisions
a very, very hopeful future. As he looks to the future, he remembers the grace of God in verse 10, he remembers the faithfulness
of God in verse 11, the goodness of God in verse 12, and God's guidance in verse 13. He's reminding us that you know what, the present, this moment
that we're in Church, it's not the end of an age, but it's the beginning of a brand new era. We can be tempted to
think, "Man, this is it, this is the end." But the end of what we knew is the beginning of a brand new era. This Psalm is full of hope
about the goodness of God, the faithfulness of God,
the provision of God. We need to keep an eternal perspective in the midst of what the Bible says is a light and momentary affliction. Out of the soil of what
seems fallow ground, will spring the roots of revival. So some people look around
and think it's all over, but the Psalmist says, "Oh no, God will, God will. God will! It's not over. There is too much Gospel
work still to be done." Our church has always been the catalyst of a place for revival. I've been part of us for 31 years, and all I've ever known
is a revival movement. And I believe it's time for us to pray: "God, will You not revive us again?" It seemed impossible 30 years ago. Today by the grace of God, the music, the campuses,
our global footprint, the local impact, our college, the justice works,
television, the conferences. I keep thinking, "I was
there in the warehouse!" And we've seen revival. I've lived through revival,
and now I'm asking, "God, would You not revive us again? God, would you not raise
our church up again to be a house of revival in this hour, to see revival spread through the outermost parts of the earth? God, would You not do it again?" Again! I've seen Him do it. And I'm believing He's
going to do it again. There was a gentleman, a
great English evangelist. His name was Rodney Smith, better known, I guess, in
revival circles, as Gypsy Smith. Now he was a renowned, and was a fiery, fiery Holy Ghost preacher in the late 1800s and early 1900s. And in his early twenties, I mean, he had gotten
radically saved at 16. He became an itinerant preacher
with the Salvation Army. And everywhere he went, crowds of first hundreds
and then thousands, and I mean, this is before
media, before technology, they would gather and thousands and
thousands would get saved. And so someone, a news
reporter once asked him. They said, "What is the secret? Gypsy Smith, what is the secret to such a successful,
large revival gathering? What is your secret? How come every time you get
up there, you're on fire, and people get saved, and
multitudes come to Christ, and people get delivered,
and people get healed, and people get set free from addiction? How does that happen?" And this is what Gypsy responded with. And Church, this would
be my prayer for us. He said, "This is what you need to do." He said, "You need to go home." And we're home today, I'm coming to you in your home, "And you need to lock
yourself in your room." And then he said, "You need to kneel down in the middle of the floor, and with a piece of chalk, draw a circle around yourself." So draw a circle with a piece of chalk, and then right there on your knees, pray fervently, and pray brokenly that God would start a revival within that chalk circle. So Church I'm asking us on every campus, would we be willing to
pick up a piece of chalk, literally or metaphorically,
draw a circle around us and dare to pray in our generation, in the midst of a pandemic, in the midst of the confusion, in the midst of the rubble, would we dare to pray, "God, would You not revive us again? And God start with me in this circle in Jesus' Name, in Jesus' Name." Friend I wonder, if you know this Jesus that I'm talking about today, not do you know about
Him, but do you know Him? Did you know that every single
one of us was created by God for a relationship with God, and it's Jesus that connects us to God. And it's Jesus that connects
us to the grace of God. And perhaps you've never known Him in an intimate or a personal way, but I'm here to remind
you tonight, friend, that only Jesus Christ can give us forgiveness for our past, a brand new life today, and a hope for the future. At a time on our earth
where people lack hope, where people lack a sense of a future, where people lack a sense of a purpose, friend, I want to remind you that God created you on
purpose with purpose, and He knows the plans
that He has for you. And you know what the Bible says, they are plans for good and not for evil. They are plans to give
you a future and a hope. And if you've never surrendered
your heart and your life to the Lordship of Jesus Christ, I want to give you this
opportunity right here, right now, wherever you're watching me to open up your heart and to receive Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Saviour. So let me pray for you wherever you are. And if you want, you can pray
this prayer along with me and say yes to Jesus. So Father, I thank You. I thank You for everyone on
the other side of this screen. And Father for everyone in this moment, that would make a decision that says I pray right now that You
would meet them at that place, that they would know
Your love, Your grace, Your forgiveness. And from this day forward,
they would walk ahead with You as the Lord and
Saviour of their life. In Jesus' Name. Amen. - Thank you, Christine Caine. That was incredible, a
blueprint for revival. And hey, if you just prayed that
prayer, can I encourage you, it's the greatest decision
you can ever make. And as a church, we want to
do this journey with you. And so you'll see a button
there on your screen. There is a website, and we want to help you get started on what is going to be
an incredible journey. But again, can we put our hands together or maybe put an incredible grateful emoji. I don't know what a grateful emoji is, but thanking Christine Caine. What an incredible message. - So good, what a great
weekend in church, JD! - It's been a great week. - I think it'd be good if
we prayed for everyone. So why don't want to do that. Jesus, thank You so much for
an amazing weekend in church. Thank You for the Word that Christine Caine
brought for us tonight. I pray that it would really
speak into all of our hearts. I pray that You would
bless all Your people and keep us safe. Thank You so much for
everything You're doing through and amongst our church. We love You so much. In Your mighty mighty Name. Amen. - Amen.
- Amen. Well, you know, what's better
than week 21 of online? - What?
- Week 22 of Church Online JD. Come on, man. You know where I was going with that. Stop leaving me hanging on Church Online. Can I give you another joke?
- Okay. - What's your favourite emoji? - The dancing emoji.
- The dancing disco emoji. - The little purple guy. It's just what I--
- The little purple dude, the guy doing that.
- Come on. If you can put an emoji in the chat, put the little dancing purple guy. - Show us all your favourite emojis on the chat on the side there. They're all amazing. Well, JD, I think it's
time for a worship song. - A praise song. Same thing though, one's fast, one's slow. But we're gonna do a fast song. - Hey, worship's everywhere. You can be walking down the
street and be worshipping. JD, come on, mate. Don't get familiar on us right now, okay. Worship is every, you worship when you're walking, when you're singing.
- Let's praise God together. - No, no, you've got to
worship all the time, guys. Just keep worship as you're going. You know what I mean? What's your favourite praise song? I know what is: "One Way." Love you Church. See you next week. - All right, I wanna see
you guys all sing this. - Let me hear you. - Come Young and Free. - Let me see you jump, jump, jump, jump.
