whispering we'll hear you call us we'll come to you beckon and we'll run after you I say so and we'll do so anoint these lips of clay and these ears of the same material and we'll go down from this sian giving you praise through Jesus Christ our Lord amen sit down I have a new Bible the Centennial Shh 10th chapter of Hebrews verses 11 and 12 and 13 and every priest standeth daily ministry and offering of times the same sacrifices which can never take away sins but this man after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever sat down you on the right hand of God the subject say it after me if you will but this man sat down Bishop Charles Edward Blake I stand here tonight honored and thankful for a privilege that only comes once in a lifetime you my elder brothers have received me back home and you Bishop Blake the chiefest among them has asked me to declare the council of God to my fathers and mothers my sisters and brothers in this first Centennial of this Holy Reformation I was privileged to serve you for many years and I'm thankful for the difference shown me over these past four years since my nineteen year absence from you thank you for welcoming me home for the record I didn't be mad I wasn't in trouble I hadn't done anything wrong at least not enough to get put out under the late bishop jo patterson silenced often fired many times but always back in time for convocation I left because an opportunity came and because my call was global to go into all the world and there was a world outside of your doors and I went out there I left my father and mother's house in 1958 I went out to find life for myself using the tools that they gave me after I'd made fairly good in the world made my mother and grandmother proud of me the Blessed privilege of going back to Philadelphia and turning my old key in her door served to remind me that I was still part of the Ellis family I didn't want anything but fellowship a meal now and then but the fellowship was affirming for me and it was also not just for me but for my children and grandchildren because they needed to know who Big Momma was may I take another moment to acknowledge my comrades in the joint College of Pentecostal bishops who are here to celebrate with us tonight several of the board members and bishops are here thank you my rib is also with me tonight she's not a spare rib but prime rib Misha bleep stole my thunder and had a stand-up she's pastor Sabrina Joyce Ellis without whom I could not envision any form of meaningful ministry or life two of my children are here Jessica and the baby Jasmine and they represent the remaining children in my 21 grandchildren and my one great grandchild it is for them that I try to provide like a say and now the text it appears to me first a man it appears to me that this letter to the Hebrews was Ricky in Italy after drink often I'm a little nervous never preached it as many negroes before in my life I never done this never I've led the song service and read the scripture but never been responsible for the text was written in Italy according to Hebrews 13 and 20 for around about 62 between 62 and 64 AD now they tell me nobody really knows who wrote the book of Hebrews the author is not mentioned in the letter you may look for a signature as you do in Romans 1 in 1 or in first Peter 1 and 1 or James 1 in 1 but it's not their forensic scholars along with many others believe that it might have been written by Paul some say not only because it seems like Paul's writing but because they run back to a second Peter 3:15 little reference a little place there they think sort of gives them the information that says Paul wrote it I don't know I don't know the letter ends with a special token that sounds like Paul and his other 13 epistles but there was something else I ran across that suggested it might have been written by a fellow that ran with Paul and hung out with him men did like him and kind of thought like him Apollo's I have a bishop in my covenant who writes letters very much like me and he wrote one then sort of leads somebody out back here about three years ago and they called me up to cuss me out and said why did you write that letter for him the man is intelligent himself a scholar seminary grab you he's literate he can write it I said I had nothing to do with his epistle the man didn't believe me so there is that possibility that there may have been a contemporary portal that hung around him and picked up his style his method of writing sort of could have been you know he helped him with his live you know Paul hello optical difficulty and you're probably saying so what alright so let's move on the letter was written to Hebrew Christians Oh I'll be where I'm going in a few minutes I'm as tired as you are so don't start nothing it was written to Hebrew Christians a Palestine in the East who had been brought up in Judaism it was written to guard them against unbelief and to strengthen them in their faith in Jesus Christ the letter is a recitation of all rituals and covenants and the rights of Judaism which were designed by God they were designed to point his people to a new and living way the Old Covenant was the promise made to the children of Israel through Moses his Old Testament or covenant required regular sacrifices for sins and it required a high priest to present the blood of a slain animal as a sacrifice to God on their behalf of sinners now keep in mind now that these sacrifices could never take away sin but they would have serve as reminders of a debt owed and the need for the taking away of sin they had to be repeated every year and they were types of God's way to salvation just watch me so the old covenant then was a picture of the new covenant in which God's promise is given to his people through this man of my text tonight in the backdrop of the activities which took place in that week more than two millennia ago one must look into the tabernacle or the tent of Moses and the temple built by Solomon to see the work involved in the atonement for sin I forgot to tell you all I'm more of a teacher than a preacher and I'm not a I'm not in a class by myself I'm in somebody's class I'm not the worse I'm not the best I'm in-between when you studied the Scriptures you discover watch the picture now I'm like Sophia Petrillo in the Golden Girls picture you discover a well-appointed Worship Center with all of the very best fixtures and furniture I'm going somewhere now B then a minute gold is plenteous in that awesome place beauty is the hallmark of the temple even down to the draperies over the windows and the matching colors of the priests garments the veil the sheer curtain that hung between the court and the holy place and the sheer curtain that hung between the holy place and the holy of holies was of such magnificence and splendor until when one would say the beauty of holiness in that day they were immediately drawn to the untouched and undefiled temple where God lived on earth but something unique about the temple makes us appreciate the text that I've selected for this these few scattered thoughts the something that I referred to is the work involved in the salvation a man anybody sleeping don't wake him up leave him alone going to church in that day was going to work being a priest was labor not what we have not not not what we have now we got pretty people now no no no one could not be a weakling more deformed because he had to work couldn't be Amit you couldn't be oh you know what chump you weren't going to work somebody say going to work and I know there's some of you out there warming up youngsters warming up for your papers you you're trying to pass a test and become my elder at 17 years of age elder haha yeah yeah but but but but see in that day we're talking about going to work I'm not talking about quitting a job in order to start preaching but work somebody say work work you see every priest had to have a trade of some kind and every priest had to be a skilled butcher every priest had to have some experience in wrangling wrangling is the term used by cattle herders to describe the caching of a bull or a cat or a Apple now if you're catching a cow or a bull hmm and bringing that animal into the temple of God be assured that the animal was not going to leave out the same way it came in and the animal had a little hunch that things are not gonna go well with him because the animal was coming to the temple back you only pay me no mind one of our problems is we're having rallies that I'm not talking about you in your 100 years I'm not talking about us in the 100 year church now I'm talking about me and my little Tabernacle in Cleveland you know where we keep waving folk in and then nobody tackles amend them ready for guests see one of the problems with one of the problems with some of us is I'm Tamaki Lina in my church I'm even messing I'm not messing with you Cleveland Bishop's you Ohio Bishop and torment me and one of the problems I'm discovering with us is that we're supposed to be bred for the world what we've become whole wheat bread that never was ground first and we're getting caught under folks dentures and coordinate teeth we're more dangerous than we are helpful we have not taught people how to prosperity gospel has ruined us I'm talking about much much my church is in a row because of the prosperity gospel everybody's expecting a Cadillac in the garage and a pig in the poke bless God but somebody's got to learn that this way is not all prosperity there is suffering if you would live godly you must suffer y'all sit down excuse me this is this is not a centennial sermon I'm messing up I'm messing up the animal knew he had to die shooting the animal was not an option you see the work of wrestling that animal into the temple and getting the animal to the altar was the biggest job see y'all say coming to the altar you think it come and just fall on the first step here bow down bend over and somebody come with a hallelujah cloth and cover you bless God amen no you hadn't gotten altar yet I'm talking about I'm talking about a seven foot altar seven foot wide zapping foot high seven foot long and seven feet low and they had to get a ladder and drag a three tiny piece unwilling to go they had to drag him back on a seven foot halter hold and he'll put down butter soap because she had to die some of our problem we keep letting for running them out they talk too much you want to know what's the matter with her staying dead yeah so I thought you got saved no they didn't die that's why we still cousin folds out baby that's why we still not kill Jack McConnell off your head snatch your weave off and throw it halfway across the church because we ain't dead yet look at somebody and tell him you got and in order to get them to that place it was worth it was labor you couldn't be cute you couldn't be dressed up in anything but the garments of your train and they were gonna get messed up how many y'all know that soul-winning is a messy business it's not cute it's not clapping and say something it's laboring which for its talling with them it's wiping this snotty noses when they mess up again it's wack work sit up sit down a minute then the onset of death ain't got much voice and I have cancer again so I'm doing my last four ah so y'all just just wait on me then the onset of death was traumatic in that the animals entire nervous system brought about convulsions and that one or two tongue beats would start kicking and thrashing trying to survive the last vestiges of life if the butcher's were not careful the thrashing animal kicked them off to alter seven feet now and then you'd have another injury or possible death of a priest preachers if you plate with the sacrifice you'll get hurt they'll kick you off the altar I was talking to the cleaver when I say work I mean work not only is there kicking and thrashing but there is the expulsion of gases there's feces and urine from that dying animal and the priest that does the butchering is dressed in the vestments like your head on this morning dressed in the vestments for killing and the waste gets all over the bright clean pretty purple and white can red rose all on his hands and in his face the priest is employed in a smelly vocation and all of this was for the sins of the people and had to be repeated often some preacher in here helped me and hallow work when the animal stopped kicking and the immediate danger Thank You Bersani immediate danger of injury was gone he no I'm not disrespecting him there was the task of catching as much of the blood of that animal as could be caught and bring that little blood into the presence of the Lord so that the high priests could pour the blood over the mercy seat all of that worked for a small basin of blood it was to be poured out in the Holy of Holies but after the butchering before the blood was poured there was a need to go to another place and take off your bloody clothes and get in a brass basin of water and take a bath the priest had to be had to change clothes and get new sandals because the waist and the refuse from the work was all over him he had to sanctify himself Dimi had to redress and after redressing he had to he had to sanctify himself by himself I should make mention of that this wasn't a nudie party and nothing this one this one the show this one something that he had to do or could afford to do before the folks he had to find his wallah basin he had the far end a solitary place of cleansing and present himself to God and be washed change his clothes and come out but after changing his clothes and coming out he then had to go watch this show he had to go to the altar of incense he had to burn incense the altar of incense was there to remind him of his own personal obligation to offer a praise as he went before the Lord praise becomes the passport into the presence of God praise is the suite order that must fill God's nostrils when we go before him with petitions when we open our services with the time of praise and worship it's not just a time filler but it's a necessary in Troy into the glory of God praise becomes the bath necessary after hard week's work and disappointment praise becomes the cleanser of the mind and of the Spirit praise becomes the Sanctifier of the believer just before worship is called for praise prepares the air fries preachers we miss a lot if we miss praise service if we don't participate in the praise if we don't sing in the pray did you not know that the beauty of your feet blesses believers how beautiful are the feet of them what is he talking about it's not walking in with the Gators it's dancing in and the path of your feet resonates throughout the house haven't you ever noticed when preachers praise God when the pastor goes up in praise the people of blessed you know I'm telling the - oh you just let you just look like you but go for just jerk and snatch once or twice you have to cinder chase police out that doesn't hope because something happens with him leadership's fee when you dance I don't mean no I don't mean no disrespect but I got the folk in Cleveland just about train that if I decide to dance everybody'd man old people get up and march with decay all I do is hit the throw sit down for a minute sit down for a minute then I tell you all sit down for a minute if we go down then I'm almost finished I just got just button let's lick please have a seat a minute have a seat have a seat have a seat take a bow oh that sound good I felt good and did you see the folk impress you see the phone did you see when we begin to just gonna ignore them they pay us some mind and they pick up our spirit I'm almost finished sit down y'all stop it stop it stop it somebody fight the organist up Holloman when the priests now watch I'm just about finished I'm just about finished bro I'm just by finish under the Finnish Apostolic fathers sitting in the judiciary I don't want to hear no warrant from y'all I'm leavin town tomorrow we'll send nobody after me when the priests watch this would enter in to praise he stood before the altar to make his offering now so far I haven't found any opportunity for anybody to sit down I've been looking through this text I've been looking I went to the I went to the temple and went to the tabernacle I couldn't find it a chair I couldn't find a chair no we're over George I was looking for a chair good all impress but no pulpit one no seats but y'all be fighting over there was no chair because everything they did they did standeth when they prayed they stood pray when no priest would enter seed he'd rock back and forth that's where you get your dancing truck David just made him pick it up a little bit you know and by the time that II D got the Africa we put the jungle bunny on it I'm so out of order I'm a quit Lord ding will invite me back no more hutch this is it for me I may as well go for broke there was no safe just watching it don't move my chair yet there was no seat that's about it making there was no chair his work required that he stood for the entirety of his ministration there were no pews in the temple there was no platform for the clergy to sit on and be admired by the people no chair for the minister you didn't get tithe you did what you had to do and then go home of course they didn't have announcements either I'm talking about in my church in clean excuse me I'm so sorry I'm Paul MacLean hallelujah in the synagogue in the synagogue Wells there might have been some seating some chairs I'm sure they were in the synagogue in the synagogue there was a pulpit but not in the temple you see the synagogue belonged to the people that's the synagogue in the synagogue that was learning and discussion and articulation and fellowship but in the temple there was only atonement that's the work and worship only the synagogue belong to the people but the temple belong to God in the synagogue the rabba was in charge he was in charge of the teaching and the expounding of the law but in the temple the priest was in charge he was in charge of the celebration of the sacraments of the people's Redemption in the temple for tabernacle there were no seats because his work was never finished he was always standing moving presenting slang bathing redressing grooming but my tics says what this man he had awkward hey buddy one sacrifice for sins for Apple thank you I needed that for a minute just leave my chair right there you see the symptom trying the sick the simple thing to deduce here is that this man's work was finished this man had come met all of the requirements for sacrifice emphases used himself and the perfect Lamb of God offered himself to death without scuffling without kick till it put to death somebody say die he suffered for victory but is not was calm in the basin the earth Oh sill was painful for but that one magnificent act what a wonderful Savior here yeah but winning got fish he went but he announced that he was going to sit down he he told the world I'm all sit down now I know you say him but where did his head I tell you simple when he said you say he was trying to let us know the walk is done the throne is ready but that has been paid I'm Finnish sins are forgiven stays a ticket out God mad at you that's what your celebration is all about happy birthday Church of God in Christ and all glory to the one who finished the work it's simple now you can come to the cross you can come down front you can come boldly because the way is bid me what foundation open up go give him some praise
