[Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] now [Music] let's give jesus a praise everybody let's give jesus one for the father [Applause] one for the son [Applause] one for the [Music] [Applause] well i want you to turn and greet each other in just a moment because when we come to worship one thing the lord wants us to be aware of is that the worship experience is not just a vertical experience it is a horizontal experience as well you can't worship god and ignore your neighbor the bible said they spake often one to another and the lord took note of it and said in that day when i make up my jewels they shall be mine your god's jewels turn to your name and tell your neighbor i'm glad to be with you in god's house [Music] tonight yes and in view of all the things that can happen life persisted the things that we didn't expect to happen and somehow through it all we're here to praise the lord thank god that we're not a statistic this evening but we're here to give god praise and in spite of what has happened i want you to turn to your neighbor now and give them your praise report will you get the hand and smile and tell them these words after all i've been through just this week thank god tell them i really thank god i still have my joy i might praise the lord [Music] [Applause] still have my joy [Music] you see because since the bible says the joy of the lord is my strength tell that same neighbor turn to them and tell them my joy is my secret weapon oh praise god hallelujah [Applause] [Music] up with his hands holy holy holy holy [Music] as we lift our hands before [Music] holy holy holy can lord just breathe [Music] as we lift our hands before [Music] listen crush [Music] precious [Music] everybody [Music] can we sit again god you're precious [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] um worship the lord now worship him worship him i want you to just worship and lift your voices and you sing your psalm of praise to you lord him exalt your name tonight [Music] we magnify your name lord [Music] god we bless hallelujah name but you have done great things with us [Music] hallelujah [Music] and we said that again everybody [Music] everywhere hallelujah [Music] [Music] uh [Music] holy spirit [Music] father of mercy and grace come on you can say that everywhere i want you to get the glory tonight [Music] that prayer again and that statement and that affirmation again and i want you because the lord inhabited the praises of his people the bible says these signs shall follow them that believe in my name shall they cast out devils and then it goes on to say they shall speak with new tongues and then it says they shall lay hands on the sick and they shall recover there's an old hymn that says let me touch him let me touch him as he goes by so when i reach out to others they may know him they may live and not die so when we come to that part that says you can touch him i want you to touch somebody and let the lord use you to touch somebody he is here [Applause] [Music] [Music] he is here you can touch him [Music] hallelujah [Music] bible says we'll sing on our bed you know we can sing sitting down but listen i want to tell you something i may be sitting down now tell your neighbor i may be sitting down now but don't bother me i've got something to shout about [Music] foreign [Music] of the holy ghost [Music] this is [Music] [Applause] he goes [Music] follow me [Music] ah [Applause] [Music] me [Applause] [Music] [Music] foreign [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] situations [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] is [Music] [Music] oh praise the lord hallelujah [Music] business [Music] god has a work for every one of us to do he created us for a purpose you're not just here by chance but god designated that you would be here on this planet at this time god intends to affect and touch other lives through your lives turn to your neighbor and tell your neighbor god intends for you to be a change agent [Music] you see you're not just a thermometer you don't just respond to your environment when the enemy turns the heat up you don't just let the thermometer go up but you're a thermostat you can set the climate tell somebody you can set the climate oh thank you jesus you set the agenda i say you set the agenda let the lord use you or praise the lord [Music] oh yes [Music] is calling me to a higher place of [Music] to praise his name tell all the people every nation [Music] is [Music] oh yes take your place on the mountain [Music] and magnifies me god's got something for you tell all the people every nation that jesus brings us [Music] [Music] higher [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] just to magnify his in every nation that he raised [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] hallelujah [Music] oh hallelujah [Music] is and jesus said that there was coming a time in which we would no longer worship the lord in the city of jerusalem but that the hour coming and now is when the true worshipers shall worship the father through the anointing of the holy ghost in the spirit and in truth and even as a spirit of god spoke unto the prophet jeremiah saying come up thither the spirit of god is speaking to us today saying that zion is calling us up to a higher place of praise and so let us enter in and lift up holy hands to him and magnify him and praise him and extol him and exalt him and magnify him and worship him in the beauty of [Music] holiness [Music] [Music] hallelujah [Music] [Music] [Music] come on and worship him praise and praise and praise him come on and praise him hallelujah [Music] the lord hallelujah come on and worship him give him glory today give him glory give him praise hallelujah your voice and pray the lord hallelujah [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] hallelujah [Applause] [Applause] my soul [Music] [Applause] [Music] yeah yeah yeah he's been so good for you oh he's been so good [Music] it's good to remember where the lord brought you from [Music] remember that there was a time when you were lost i was talking this morning to one brother who said pastor i've come a long ways [Music] the lord picked me up off the street [Music] turned my life around i'm gonna hear the lord turn your life [Music] a cold night of sin i did wrong within the pine shepherd found me [Music] and now [Music] i'm on my way home [Music] on a cold night of sin i did wrong [Music] then [Music] and now i'm on my [Music] shall follow me [Music] oh [Music] apology [Music] [Applause] [Music] yes [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] if [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] uh [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] anybody [Music] so i still have joy i still [Music] after all [Music] after all [Music] [Applause] [Music] yes [Music] still happiness [Music] i still have peace [Music] i still have love in my heart [Music] [Applause] [Music] ah [Music] i still have joy i still [Music] [Applause] happy [Music] [Applause] i want everybody here that's been in the hospital in the last 12 months i want you to stand everybody that's been in the hospital in the last 12 months see some things you can't said what you said on every person that experienced the loss of a loved one in the last 12 months i want you to stand [Music] some of us thought we couldn't make it [Music] but here we are some way somehow god brought you through somebody that is experienced some real serious difficulties maybe financial or business problems i want you to stay well look at here [Music] maybe you were unemployed god fed you made away from you and here you are you didn't think you could make it but somehow god made a way and preserve you to this day because you were in his hands [Music] and one thing i like about salvation it's not just for people who've had problems you know a lot of folks they lose their joy when they get blessed they're successful in business i want all of you that god has blessed you in a great way in the last year you sting well i guess that don't leave nobody there [Music] it's wonderful when you can be blessed to make make your way be successful and still have joy still know how to praise the lord you know what david said david said lord don't let me be so poor that i'm still and don't let me be so rich that i forget you come on somebody talk to me praise god but i think in 1949 the holy ghost led philip brooks to relocate to detroit michigan where in detroit he met the love of his life doris and they were joined in holy matrimony on february 2nd 1952. in the home of bishop william m winston this was the ministry team that would birth the new saint paul tabernacle church of god in christ and to this union was born to children faith and philip bishop and madam men shall utterly fall but they that wait but they that wait but they that wait upon the lord shall renew their strength they shall run and not be weary and they shall walk and not faint may god had a blessing to the reading of his word [Music] [Applause] book of first corinthians 15th chapter beginning at the 50th 51st first behold i show you a mystery we shall not all sleep but we shall all be changed in a moment in the twinkling of an eye at the last trump for the trumpet shall sound and the dead shall be raised incorruptible and we shall be changed for this corruptable must put on oh come on put them down [Applause] [Music] oh let's celebrate our leader hallelujah together for a generational leader [Music] you [Music] jesus [Music] together for the life in times of a five star general at this time coming with the congregational tributes new saint paul tabernacle coming in this order and we know that it's impossible for you to sum up your experience in love for this giant of a leader in two minutes but we know that god operates in the impossible so we ask you to limit your remarks to two minutes please out of respect to this great brooks family coming in this order department of women mother rebecca m henderson she's coming now following her men's ministry deacon carl g maple following him representing the family elder philip a brooks iii an evangelist faith s brooks and after they have concluded we will be back in the hands of this wonderful choir let's see man as they come in that order you know i once told bishop brooks that he was an angel in disguise it seemed to me that some of the things he said and certainly some of the things he did were just angelic they were heavenly now just think how heaven must be rejoicing up there now you see they got this great gift that we had if you need a father a brother if you need a friend you will see bishop brooks he had a deep love for people and especially for the women department of new saint paul we were nurturing women we felt that he should have been home in the bed taking his rest but he would show up here at new saint paul to see about us we were spoiled we just knew sickle well he would be stepping through that door i'm back and we would be so happy we just wanted him to come back time and time again forever we loved him dearly and we were truly blessed to have him as our pastor and you know not only me but some of the women have said that they never told bishop about their troubles about the challenges they faced about their problems but somehow their answers came and problems were solved right across this very full bit because bishop was in tune to our needs and to our desires and then one might wonder how did he know that i wonder who told him about my business it had to be god he was in tune to god now to madame brooks and the brooks family we could see how much he loved you and we know you loved him back but know this one thing with the help of the and the strength of god you are going to be all right the woman department is here to love you and to hold you up and to help carry on bishop's great legacy but god loved him so much that he called them home to rep he needed to rest he surely put his time in and so we say amen amen to the will of god rest in peace out dear pastor we'll see you on the other end well praise the lord i said praise the lord this is the time this could still give god some praise we may be sorrowful but in all things we can still tell the lord thank you thank you lord yeah i love my pastor honor the lord on today and to his precious son jesus christ and the holy ghost we thank god for our esteemed leader of the church of god in christ bishop charles e blake and to bishop cedric daniels the interim second assistant presiding bishop of the church of god in christ and to all the bishops present on today and to bishop designate zachary hicks and to all the servants of god who are present here on today we also give respect to mother norma burrell our northeast michigan jurisdictional supervisor of the women's department and to all the elected ladies of god who are present on today and of course we certainly give honor and respect to this bereaved family first leader doris brooks elder philip a brooks iii evangelist faith brooks and the entire brooks family and we want them to know we are yet praying for them that the lord will continue to comfort and console them only as he can it is truly an honor for me to stand before you on today and pay homage and respect to a great man and all the christian of the church of god in christ and all over the world bishop p.a brooks i was afforded and awesome awesome honor and privilege to travel with my pastor and bishop all over the country we took plane rides car rides and i said plane rides and train rides together to many different places and every place we traveled to my pastor was well received with the greatest respect and honor even those experiences were great great experiences for me it was not the greatest experience i have ever had with my pastor and bishop for you see justice plato sat at the feet of socrates and gleaned from him as it related to philosophy and just as the disciples set the feet of jesus and gleaned from him and just as the apostle paul said at the feet of gamaliel the famous pharisee doctor the jewish law and learned from him i had the blessed opportunity along with my new saint paul church family to glean from the most this most profound teacher and preacher of the gospel of jesus christ bishop p.a brooks yes i want you to know it was a pure delight and joy to hear my pastor unravel the mysteries of the word of god and then preach and deliver a fresh woman word fresh rainbow word that left you mesmerized i realized that there would never be another bishop p.a brooks he may be imitated but he could never be duplicated all of us here at new saint paul are extremely proud of our pastor and rightfully so after all he was the jurisdictional prelate of northeast michigan he served nine consecutive terms on the journal board and while on the general board he has served as general secretary also served as second assistant presiding bishop and then served as the first assistant presiding bishop of this grand old church of god in christ even though we were proud of all these accomplishments what we are most proud of was the fact that he was our pastor amen and as our pastor his character was impeccable he held true to all the virtues that god declared in his word that pastor should be spirit-filled honest consumed with integrity and having a good rapport and reputation god gave us a pastor truly after his own heart our pastor bishop pereira brooks was not only a phenomenal gospel preacher and teacher as it has already been said but he was a prolific praiser if one was to trace his genealogy i would not be surprised if they found out that he was a direct descendant of the tribe of judah every time that i hear these praises every day is a day of thanksgiving and zion is calling me to a higher place of praise all your glory to god the spirit of my pastor begins to resonate all down in my spirit one of the most powerful virtues of my pastor that he was truly a man of faith he didn't just speak about faith he lived by faith he faced and dealt with many challenges in particular health challenges but he never complained or used them as excuse for not being able to praise teach and preach or worship god to the fullest he will tell you very emphatically that many are the afflictions of the righteous but my my god delivered them out of them all my pastor identified with the apostle paul when he said i found myself in a quagmire for to live is christ and to die is gain i know if i keep living i will keep preaching and teaching that christ is the answer and if i died there was a crown of righteousness laid up for me this is a win-win situation for me but if i had my drummers oh praise the lord i would much rather be in the presence of the lord but to be absent from this whole body is to be present with the lord and the apostle paul goes on to say in 2nd timothy 4 6-7 for i know i'm now ready to be offered and the time of my departure is at hand he said i have fought a good fight i have finished my course i have kept the faith and now i'm ready to be offered by my god so to the family god bless you be of good cheer for the lord will i say the lord will see you through hallelujah [Applause] [Applause] goodness so i want to give honor to my presiding bishop bishop j bishop charles edward blake lady may blake mother lewis our interim prelate bishop cedric daniels bishop j drew sheared and certainly to my supervisor mother norma barrell my father was a man who had many roles and responsibilities and wore many hats he was a psalmist a worshiper musician an astute businessman a husband and a father he was a leader as well as a servant and the list goes on however i have chosen three of his many hats to share with you today my pastor my father and my friend he was my pastor when i was born during the holy convocation in which bishop c.l anderson senior was the prelate while my father was preaching a service an early message in that convocation bishop anderson whispered to the other bishops he must be really happy because he just had a new born baby girl as the firstborn i never had to join the church i never had to go through new member classes as the shepherd of my soul he and my mother taught and guided me with instruction direction and stern correction he was my mentor he exemplified total concern for my personal march of faith he taught and lived a life of holiness through his conversations his persona and his lifestyle the way he interacted with my mother i never heard him holler at my mother i never heard him holler and scream at us he placed me in the choir at an early age to encourage me to play the organ and assisted me in my spiritual growth as pastor he was strongly committed to and believed in the ordinances practices and principles of the church of god and christ which meant growing up with no parties no worldly music in the house no wearing pants which meant growing up no prom that i went to i couldn't be a cheerleader but we went to church all the time and in his words he said it was holiness without which no man would see the lord as a father traditionally the father is to be the provider for the family my dad excelled in wearing this hat he insisted that my mother stay home to focus on being his wife an extraordinary mother of my brother and i all the working two jobs carrying on the church he deemed family time is very important eating together insisting that we eat all of our vegetables before getting any rice pudding or banana pudding he gave us father-son time taking my brother to the white house and overseas daddy-daughter days and taking my mother on dates to howard johnson's it was my father who encouraged me to pursue my education at oral roberts university and rhema bible training center which my bro both my brother and i attended as daddy when my father put on his dad he had he was a different person than the bishop or civic leader that many of you know i have you have been i want to say to my dad everything besides my relationship with god you gave me so much attention so much care so much concern advice love direction instruction funny moments together i remember when you taught me how to ride a bike and you held onto the back of it and told me to pedal as fast as i could and i did faster and faster and faster confident that you were on the back of the bike and then i looked back and you had let me go and i was writing on my own i remember when you taught me to color inside the lines by outlining the picture first and then coloring lightly on the inside i remember you started a hobby of collecting stamps and you said this would be our hobby together i remember when i was about four or five and for the first time i heard secular music when he was changing the channel and the cars we were driving and i started patting my foot and turning my head to it kind of moving and my dad looked at me with disdain so i stopped immediately i remember when my mom was in the hospital after giving birth to my brother and you cooked the egg for me for breakfast and i was waiting in the bathroom for you to come in and wash me up like my mom always did you came in the bathroom you were shocked that i hadn't got dressed and you refused to dress me and you told me just put my clothes on and let's go i remember being in the car with you when we pulled up to the state temple when bishop c.j johnson was the bishop and at that time state mother hopkins was the state supervisor and i believe it was mother hopkins that was coming out and we rolled up my dad rolled down the window to speak to her and he said hey mother and i said daddy that's not your mother and he scolded me and told me to sit down i remember when you called that man to come get the car my mother was in the car and i knew it wasn't my daddy and so i stared at him real mean the whole time he drove the car my mother tried to get me to sit down but i wouldn't because i knew he wasn't my daddy i remember at the church on grand river kentucky i was sitting sort of in the back talking with the young people during the service and you came out of the pulpit out of your office and opened up the door and beckoned for me to come there and when i did you closed the door and slapped me in the face and told me to stop talking and push me back out of the office i was so embarrassed but i learned the lesson now as an adult you've become my best friend as my friend he wore this hat with great tenacity offering me wise counsel and sound advice i could talk to him about almost anything he'd listen patiently unless i disagreed with him and then he corrected me and redirected my thoughts and ideas he warned me of danger and any time as an adult someone asked me to come speak at their church i would go to him for his opinion and approval and if he got silent i knew that that meant no so i responded that's okay dad and he'd say all right we were friends worked together in our home in our church in the community in the national i looked out for my dad he looked out for me we looked out for my mother i'm so grateful and honored to be the daughter of this icon the spiritual general of this era of bishop p.a brooks he talked to me about his conversations that he had with bishop jail patterson senior with bishop f.d washington and i always sat down with him and had lunch and dinner whoever and however i am today i owe it all to god allowing me to have been parented by my mother and my father the honor of my life has been to sit at the feet of my father and to serve my father with every bit of life strength that i had within me as i conclude today on february the 9th 2010 the lord moved upon me and blessed me to give my dad my kidney on april the 9th 2020 my dad gave me and my brother his humble caring sensitive compassionate understanding heart a heart for souls a heart for the downtrodden a heart for the disenfranchised a heart for the impoverished a heart for the disadvantage the castaways a heart for the sheep the millennials the children a heart to continue with as much as i gave to him in life i want to say today although i am saddened i am hurt i felt pain that where i've never felt pain before in all the lives of the 40 years that i've been in ministry i've comforted the grieved but i've never felt the pain that i have felt since april the 9th 2020 half of my life half of my heart is gone i will never ever be the same without my daddy if you don't understand my tears if you don't understand my sorrow then you don't understand what it means to be a daddy's girl today i have a heart to continue with as much as i gave to him in life the legacy of bishop phillip aquila the eagle brooks will never die as long as i live as long as i breathe as long as my brother lives and my family we will carry the torch of my father the greatest father in the world my father my daddy my anchor my hope the love of my life bishop p.a brooks eddie i love you and i look forward to seeing you real soon in heaven saints pray for me somebody say praise the lord somebody say praise the lord again giving honor to bishop daniels and also our presiding bishop bishop charles edward blake all of the bishops that are on the platform thank you all for coming and sharing with us as we see our dad off our dad first before i say anything i want to acknowledge my mother madame doris brooks the angel of the house they were a team they were a team from beginning to end they were a team and you see this stained glass window here behind me bishop had that put in and if you look it is inscribed with my mother and his name on it bishop loved this church and he loved the people of god he loved ministry he loved the community and we shared dad with you all many times we went without but it was okay because he raised us to do ministry with him and to care about the people of god and so we stand here today to pay honor to my father great man of god great leader a great example can i get a witness in here bishop brooks was a wonderful example everywhere you would go people would honor him because of the example that he set before you and you may make some mistakes and find yourself off the trail but you always had that right before you as an example to get you back on track amen and so in closing i want to say that we are sorry sorrowful and we mourn the loss of our father we don't want to let him go god knows best there's no more pain there's no more suffering but what he taught me was that we are living to live again we are living this life to live again and if you know the lord we're going to see him again so we don't mourn like the world this is a celebration we are celebrating the life and legacy of a man of god that loved the lord and served the lord with gladness with every breath in his body [Applause] so we are as his family and as the church family we are sorrowful that we're not going to see him again on this side but what he taught me and i'm just i just believe the word i'm going to see my daddy again can i get a witness in here are you ready to see bishop again we're going to see him again in glory so i just want to sing this little song and i'm going to take my seat one glad morning when this life is over i fly away to my seat and decrease or another may increase greater than me and my east side detroit eastside vernacular bishop brooks and all of his eloquency and all his intellectual prowess and all of his grace and his anointing that fused through his ears he was as tough as nails and that's all i'm going to say about that let's say amen precious in the sight of the lord is the death of his saints first assistant presiding bishop philip aquila brooks it is said the true measure of a man is not how many servants he has but rather how many he has served bishop brooks distinguished himself not only with many noteworthy personal and ministry accomplishments but also his unwavering loyalty and service to every presiding bishop of our great denomination his numerous ascending assignments in our church are too numerous to name bishop's servant leadership was an inspiration to many his creative and succinct introductions of our presiding bishop bishop always captured the essence of our leader his resourceful and generous efforts towards the concerns of the international department of women shall forever be remembered in the year of 2016 he and mother norma barrell hosted the women's international convention in the city of detroit truly he spared no pain for the women will never forget the helicopter which flew over the convention hotels with a welcome banner to the women of the church of god in christ madam brooks i pray god's strength and comfort in these coming days elder brooks the legacy of your father will continue as you emulate those excellent qualities that he possessed evangelists face god is not unrighteous to forget your unselfish sharing of your kidney as you poured yourself into your dad's ministry to every family member god comfort you to the new saint paul tabernacle beloved mother burrell and the saints of the historic northeast michigan jurisdiction on behalf of the great women of our church i extend our love and continued prayers during this time of transition of one of the giants of our church the bishop philip aquila brooks lift up your heads to the heels from which cometh your help your help indeed comes from the lord god bless each of you is our continued prayer i love you all with the love of the lord we're here today to pay homage to the life of bishop p.a brooks it brings to mind words written 1700 years ago in the year 1315 by a great christian state sage meister eckhart he wrote that if the only prayer you pray in your life is thank you that would suffice there is no deeper more fuller more mature response to our path than thank you after serving as pastor jurisdictional bishop member of the general board first assistant presiding bishop what better prayer can we pray today then thank you 67 years ago the late bishop cj johnson presented elder brooks to be the pastor of what became the new saint paul church of god in christ 45 years ago the late presiding bishop j.o patterson brought him before the general assembly to be consecrated as the prelate of the mother jurisdiction of michigan northeast diocese and then 36 years ago the general assembly selected this prelate as an apostolic member of the general board of 12 and 11 years ago our current presiding bishop charles blake requested his election by the general assembly as the first assistant presiding bishop of the greatest church in the world and he has humbly and boldly answered each call at each level and prayed a prayer at each assignment of thanksgiving upon combing the records of our great church we've discovered that no man in this state has served as long as a jurisdictional bishop we've discovered that no man living or dead has served so long on the noble general board of our international ministry and we've also discovered that not only has he served so long but more importantly he has served so well we must offer our thanksgiving on a personal note about 16 and a half years ago when i was consecrated as a jurisdictional bishop bishop brooks joined the late bishop g e patterson in laying on of episcopal hands later on bishop brooks dedicated our new church facility in kansas city and he told me that at every single day of his ministry he worked as diligently as he did the first day of every assignment and we are witnesses that for every assignment and every promotion and every elevation it has been glorious productive and distinguished a tribute to the one and only bishop p.a brooks from mandela in south africa to the white house as well as detroit he's been there from mayor coleman in the motor city to this sprawling anchor congregation new saint paul as a local pastor he has been there authoring the first book on kojic doctrine as a study guide and also collecting and displaying bishop mason's bedroom furniture there has only been one bishop p a brooks so we pause today to give tribute to this consummate churchman thank you this innovative builder and game changer for the kingdom thank you this sanctified leader and general assembly delegate over and over thank you so much this christian gentleman for your life of selfless service we thank almighty god and on behalf of the general assembly of the church of god in christ everywhere for the life and ministry and legacy of bishop filler aquila book brooks no other prayer will suffice but thank you jesus christ bishop philip aquila brooks first assistant presiding bishop of the church of god in christ was a servant leader personified in recent years the term servant leader has become popularized to give direction and guidance to the next generation of leaders but bishop brooks has been a servant leader all his life he only served the general board as first ever chief adjutant and then as secretary of the general board after being elected as a member in 1984 becoming one of the longest serving general board members to date i began my service on the general board in 1988 he was a friend and colleague from that time until our last gathering in atlanta georgia in february of this year there was never a time when i showed up in a city and he was not faithfully serving on his post and when he wasn't feeling well in his body he didn't complain never gave excuses he would simply say reporting for duty mr president and he would be present and accounted for leading the people of god in worship and he worshipped god with a passion he was a worshiper his life was worship personified because he understood that worship is more than a sunday morning engagement he understood that worship is a lifestyle and because he lived this concept he would direct and could direct an audience of 20 000 as well as an audience of 20 in worship we all recall with warmed hearts those services and our holy convocations when the power of god would fall each time he led the people in worship he was serious about the work of god he desired for the church and the people of god to have the best and challenge the saints to give themselves to the service of god he led by example bishop brooks was a man that lived a holy life that life was pleasing in the sight of god he was a sage of wisdom to countless pastors and young bishops he assisted me in conducting the bishops academy making sure that each class of bishops understood their responsibilities to the church and to the people of god under their care when i was elected to serve as presiding bishop in 2007 one of my first responsibilities was to select the individual who would serve as my first assistant presiding bishop the one who would serve in my stead should i become unavailable to do so and without a second thought i selected bishop brooks to serve by my side he has proven to be a faithful supporter to my leadership and administration without wavering both in and out of my presence the eloquent manner of introduction each time it was my responsibility to offer remarks how to preach at our national gatherings always left the audience mesmerized by his articulation masterful navigation through the english language bishop brooks was a family man and the love and care he displayed for his wife madame doris brooks his children faith brooks and philip brooks is to be commended and modeled as the template by which one who serves the flock of god should serve his family he loved cared for and provided for his family well we as the body of believers have suffered a great loss but heaven has received a well-serving soldier he's rejoicing in the presence of god with no more pain no more suffering and continually singing god's praises please know that the brooks family saint paul church the first jurisdiction of northeast michigan will continue to be in my heart and my prayers may god bless you and i love you all in the name of jesus on let's praise god for our leader presiding bishop charles edward blake we're here celebrating a giant uh bishop daniels uh allow me to tell two things about this great man and his impact in my life started pastoring a church and i was appointed to a church in island park michigan and uh church had grown kind of rapidly and so i could not secure a loan to buy the church right down the street man said that we were a flukes and they would not give us alone i came and talked to bishop brooks told him what i was trying to do he said to me he said i'll back you up with my jurisdiction i believe in your ministry god made it so that i didn't have to use him to get the loan but he sat on the board and he told them i'd be all right and that's how i got my loan to get the church right down the street this last time and he bishop brooks uh he had a sense of humor and so when i was up for bishop he came and uh he took all of the ballots and never looked at me he never said anything to me there were other bishops there and so when they walked out on the platform to announce who was the new bishop i was looking at all of them to get a signal nobody looked at me and i said oh lord i'd have lost this election and later he told me i couldn't tell you anything because i had to check with the presiding bishop that's the kind of man he was he was a leadership man he was a great preacher many of us have tried to imitate him preaching but we've all failed he was a tremendous church man and he will never be forgotten madam brooks you have our sincere prayers and support elder philip you have our prayers my sister of course sister faith i understand i just lost my mother and i tell people i'm a professional i know what to say at times like these but when it's you your profession goes out the window you've got to have a relationship with the lord to make it through these difficult times and so you all have my sincere prayers our eulogist yields from milwaukee wisconsin he began preaching at a very early age he is a well-learned man he is tremendously successful and a just a wise individual time and time again god has shown his approval upon his life he is indeed a living miracle he pastors one of the great churches of our denomination he passes the holy redeemer institutional church of god in christ he is the presiding prelate of the wisconsin first jurisdiction and of course the interim prelate of michigan northeast historic jurisdiction my brothers and sisters he is our interim second assistant presiding bishop right after the choir has given their rendition of course we want to acknowledge that there was a special recognition or commendation that was sent by bishop ernie morris that the brother stephen savage was supposed to read but due to time we're just acknowledging it and we praise god for it thank you bishop designate zachary hicks who are doing a fine job at uh conducting this service god bless all of the bishops and we thank god for bishop walker who is here and of course bishop sanders who is here god bless you the choir is coming with their final simonic selection and then after the choir has finished their rendition i'm going to ask that all except the family will stand and receive our interim second assistant presiding bishop bishop cedric daniels [Music] so i will be [Music] i will be i be seated what an honor and a joy it is to stand behind the sacred desks where one of america's finest preachers on a consistent basis proclaim the gospel of jesus christ what a privilege it is to be in the cathedral the sanctuary the holy place that god has afforded such a distinguished man as the honorable bishop philip aquila brooks ii to serve to pastor to lead to shepherd we honor and celebrate that wonderful legacy and let us praise god for the life and the ministry of bishop p a brooks let's give god glory and honor and praise [Music] it is by the permission and the direction of our esteemed leader of the church of god in christ the right reverend the honorable the chief apostle of our church bishop charles edward blake senior that i am honored and humbled to stand in this space to express to you on his behalf and a grateful church and denomination the distinguished members of the general board each of them have expressed their love and their appreciation for our cold laborer in the gospel each of them have shared kind words for the family to the family and we especially pray for the thomas family during this moment and this hour we praise god for our bishops that are present and i want to thank bishop j drew sheared for the introduction and the support that he has provided the michigan area bishops the illinois bishops and all of the bishops that are present here today administrative assistants of this historic jurisdiction to all of the pastors who have worked so wonderfully with me over the past few months to provide seamless transition michigan has experienced an unusual amount of transitions and over the past few months i think there's approximately 14 pastors that i've had to appoint over the past few months and as churches and congregations and families are impacted by a situation circumstance that is currently going on globally please know that god holds the world in his hands and god is in control i would like to express on behalf of bishop blake and the church of god in christ worldwide i love in our appreciation for one of the finest ladies anywhere a quiet giant let us praise the lord for mother brooks and let's thank god for her we thank the lord for her a jewel a precious woman mother you are loved by so many you are valued and you are appreciated and we thank the lord for you as a co-establishmentarian of this work since the 1950s we praise god for all of the sacrifice that you have made to evangelist faith brooks she is a proclaimer she is an evangelist she is an anointed vessel of the lord she has been used by god globally to proclaim the gospel she has been nurtured by her father bishop brooks bishop brooks has taken his special time and energy to transfer love knowledge and information and i want to say to her from those of us that have experienced she and elder philip those of us that have experienced uh the transition of your parent i want you to know that isaiah 41 verse 10 is right the lord says i will help you i will strengthen you i will uphold you with my right hand and god will do just that it's no time to hold your head down after a while lift up your head to the heel from which cometh your help and then pick up the mantle and go forward in the name of the lord i want to extend to elder philip brooks iii my sincere appreciation and thanks i appreciate and thank the lord for the conversations and the opportunities that we have had to share and i have somewhat teased him i won't go into detail but on memorial day he sent me or there about he sent me a picture of where he was barbecuing and i just had to make sure that he understood very clearly he knows not what he's doing he is not a good barbecue i put 29 ingredients in my recipe and we went back and forth and i want to express to him he has shared with me the work that he has done here at the church and his involvement in engagement you are honored and privileged sir to have a name of distinction to have a name of honor and there's no one else that can carry that name philip a brooks because your father placed that name and mom placed that name on you may the lord's blessing be with you to the brooks family to the saint paul new saint paul tabernacle church of god in christ bishop would have me to say to you the greatest church anywhere new saint paul tabernacle to the historic first northeast michigan jurisdiction finest pastors and supervisor mother bereal we praise god for one of our saints 96 years strong we praise god for mother supervisor bogan and all of our supervisors that are present to our supervisor general supervisor mother barbara mcclue lewis and mother rivers emerita and to each of you my brothers and sisters i greet you in the matchless and wonderful name of our lord for those of you who are not familiar with me let me say that i'm not a long-winded preacher and of course if you take a nap i'll be gone by the time you wake up i understand that the police escorts are waiting and i will uh abbreviate the things that i wish to say but bishop brooks served so wonderfully the church of god in christ he was elevated from and his humble beginnings in chicago to here in detroit and then every area of ministry he excelled and he demonstrated and displayed an enormous capacity and ability to display ministry excellence there's a small group of individuals that can say that they serve the church as general board members bishop brooks is honored to be among that group there's a larger group that can say they've served the church as jurisdictional bishops bishop brooks is distinguished to serve in that group there's an even smaller group on the general board that has served the secretariat of the church bishop brooks along with historic other individuals is honored to be among that group and even a narrower group of individuals that have served as second assistant and then an even smaller group as first assistant all of those are places and spaces that your pastor your father your bishop your leader has served with excellence so we are here today to say well done thy good and faithful servant you've been faithful over a few things now god have made you ruler i want to say to you that uh they just removed us patches from my eyes i had eye surgery and they just removed them yesterday and then they gave me some extra uh drops so that uh my eyes were uh somewhat uh challenged and um dilated and they gave me some undilating medicine and because of that bishop shelby is going to aid me in reading just a portion of scripture and if you will give me five kojic minutes i will share a word from the lord and take mercy bishop shelby let us hear the word of the lord that is recorded by paul to the church at philippi at chapter 2 verses 9 through 11 the word of the lord of those in heaven and of those on earth and of those under the earth and that every tongue shall confess that jesus christ is lord to the glory of god the father my brothers and my sisters if we can have a discussion just for a few fleeting moments i would like to suggest to you from the thought what's in a name what's in a name life is filled with swift transition not on earth unmoved can stand build your hopes on things eternal and hold to god's unchanging hand i want to suggest to you that often that there are windows times and spaces where certain dedications and memorials have been distinguished and set aside by the utilization of a name there are places that we know and dates that we reflect because solely they've been attached to a name they're places that we may call the white house by name there are months that we refer to of our births and anniversaries and moments of special celebration by name january february all the way through december by name there are places where we live and we receive mail and other kinds of things because they have been designated by a name in fact when individuals make reference to you they make reference because somewhere along your earthly pilgrimage you have been given a name i want to suggest to you that sometimes names can be complementary and sometimes names can be critical there are those that have been taught early in life that sticks and stones may break my bones but your names and words will never hurt me names can be used to symbolize and celebrate the accomplishments that you have made degrees come with names cars comes with name food comes with name everything that you can imagine is attached to a name the people of all understood that and so when they would receive a child and receive a gift they would name that person prophetically for what they believed that person to accomplish you know they just didn't call everybody boo boo and two two and and all of the rest of it a name had a significance and i want you to know that even from the beginning of beginnings genesis chapter a hallelujah four the bible says that after the third child of adam and eve was born from that moment people began to call on the name your somebody knows the book the name of the lord throughout the pages of the holy writ we find the utilization and usage of names names symbolize liberty and freedom names of symbolized bondage and even when there was a move of god when god did something special in a place they gave that place a name so that others would remember this is the place where god moved this is the place where god delivered and i just want to suggest to you in the last two and a half minutes of my discourse i want to say to you that bishop brooks understood a name and even though his name philip aquila brooks symbolizes horses eagles and courage i want you to know that he preached a name above his name i want you to understand that through the pages of history please be seated it's rude to stand when somebody's talking i just need just a few more minutes well we can clearly find in the scripture where bishop understood that there was a name and down through the telescope of time there were names of individuals that made great contributions i want you to remember that there were names of secular people plato and uh aristotle euripides and socrates they all had a name and then there was obadiah and zephaniah and zachariah and malachia they all had a name but over in the ghetto of bethlehem of judea the bible says and she shall bring forth a son and thou shalt call his name jesus for he shall save his people from their sin whoa that name jesus we call on that name bishop called on that name the angels called on that name and i just want you to know that the other day hallelujah jesus called his name and he called him and said come on home well i want you to know that jesus hallelujah will call your name and i don't want you to get discouraged hallelujah to jesus his name is philip aquila brooks but when the roll is called and the names are given i want you to know if they get to phillip and they don't call that name bishop brooks will not be discouraged if they give to aquila and they don't call that name bishop will not be discouraged if they get to the name brooks and his name is not called he will not get discouraged he'll just wait till they get down to the esses and when they say servant well done he's gonna get up [Music] [Applause] i can hear the bishop say when he calls me i will answer i'll be somewhere listening for my name god bless you hallelujah hallelujah as the funeral directors are coming hallelujah come on say hallelujah hallelujah come on [Music] [Music] is [Music] i've been down if i hold down on the battlefield [Music] turn around oh sickness [Music] we're standing [Music] oh [Music] [Applause] [Music] but i got a man oh is hello is [Music] i won't give up [Music] [Applause] [Music] i'm [Music] is [Music] so [Music]
