hello makers welcome back to the art gallery fabrics channel my name is melissa and today i have a quilting tips video about a simple binding method that will have you finishing your quilting projects like a pro beginner quilters make sure to check out the description box below to view our quilting tips playlist for more quilting tutorials also if you're new to our channel don't forget to subscribe so you don't miss out on future videos when i first started quilting i was terrified at binding quilts there are so many ways to bind a quilt and i have tried them all in today's video i will show you the most successful method i have found that has given me the best results with the least amount of stress and fuss alright makers let's get started the first thing you'll need is a finished quilt sandwich to bind i use these scrappy blocks that i layered with a piece of batting and insult bright and a backing fabric they have been laying around my house for so long that i thought it would be the perfect mini project to show you the binding process on make sure your project is trimmed and squared up by using a clear quilting ruler and a rotary cutter the next step is to pick your binding i decided to choose an agf pure solid that matched back with my project to find out how long to make your binding strip measure all four sides of your project my project is 8 inches so i will multiply 8 by 4 sides and get 32 inches and i always like to add a few extra inches to add some extra wiggle room cut your strips at 2 and 1 4 inch by width of fabric to attach your strips together place your 45 degree line lined up with the end of one of your strips draw a 45 degree line going through the corner of your strip with a fabric marking pen place your strips right sides together to form a 90 degree angle pin into place and sew on the line you drew your strips should line up perfectly to create one long binding strip give your excess fabric a trim at 1 4 inch and press your seam flat fold your binding in half and line the raw edges up with each other giving your binding a nice press open up your binding strip and trim one edge on a 45 degree angle fold that edge at 1 4 inch and press it flat open up your binding strip and place your folded edge in the middle of one of the sides of your project place the raw edge of the binding to the raw edge of the wrong side of your project sew about one inch down your strip then fold your binding in half so all the raw edges meet sew starting again about 2 inches down from the top of your binding strip sew at 1 4 inch around your entire project stop at 1 4 inch before you reach the corner of your project and with the needle in the down position lift your presser foot up and turn your project so you can stitch to the corner creating a diagonal line this step will aid you in folding your strip out creating a 45 degree line and then folding your strip over on top of each other to create your mitered corner stick your project back under your presser foot and continue sewing on the rest of your binding following this process at each corner before you get to the end of your binding strip trim off your excess if necessary and stick the end of your binding strip into the beginning opening of your binding finish sewing the rest of your binding all the way to the end and now your binding is attached to the back of your project trim any excess fabric and threads before folding over your binding fold and press your binding over the top edge of your project and clip into place with some wonder clips all the way around your project with the needle positioned as close to the edge of the binding as possible stitch around your entire project securing the binding to the top of your project when you get to a corner stitch slowly or manually hand crank your stitches to make sure not to go too far past your corner and to make sure to capture your minor corner with your needle in the down position lift your presser foot and turn your project and continue stitching slowly to get your project moving through the machine again once you make it back to where you began your stitching you should now have a finished bound project if any of you are like me and have a stack of unfinished projects at the binding stage now is the time to start checking those projects off your list with binding practice makes perfect and practicing on smaller projects like pot holders or table runners can build your confidence to get you ready for binding those larger quilting projects if you enjoyed this video or learned something new make sure to give this video a thumbs up and share it with all your sewing friends and until next time happy sewing
