hello everyone welcome back to the art gallery fabrics channel my name is melissa and i'm bringing you another time-saving quilting tips video all about quilting as you go if you missed my last quilting tips video all about strip piecing make sure to click the i in the right top hand corner of this video but first let's learn a little bit more about the quilting as you go technique grab a piece of batting and pull out your scrap bin because not only is this process a great scrap buster but it saves you the time of having to quilt your piece after you've pieced it together quilting as you go is essentially piecing and attaching your pieces to the batting so you are piecing and quilting all in one step after learning this process you will never want to throw away another scrap fabric again it's so much fun making your project as big or as small as you want and watching it grow you can turn your finished pieces into so many fun projects like tote bags placemats coasters pillows and so much more i'm so excited to show you this fun technique so makers let's get started [Music] before we get started make sure to subscribe to the agf channel for quilting tips and tricks and fun fabric videos for quilters every scrap of fabric counts which is why i love the quilt as you go technique grab some strips of fabric and pieces that can be cut down to make squares and rectangles no piece is too small i decided to grab all of my blue and turquoise fabric scraps for this project to create a project based on a certain color but feel free to choose whatever fabrics that are calling your name if you need help deciding which fabrics to use watch our video all about choosing the right fabrics for your quilting projects sift through your pile of scraps and pick out rectangles squares and strips in different widths and lengths give your scraps a nice press and pull out your rotary cutter and ruler trim off any selvedges and trim pieces that are wonky or don't have a straight edge once you're done you should have a pile of nicely pressed and trimmed pieces to start your quilt as you go project for this first quilt as you go project grab a piece of batting and as many long fabric strips as you have place one of your strips on your batting and then place the other strip right sides together to your first strip pin in place and bring it over to your machine and stitch at 1 4 inch making sure to backstitch at the beginning and the end of your strip by doing this both of your strips are now sewn together and attached to your batting and it should look like this finger press your strips open or press them open with an iron grab two different strips of fabric and place them right sides together on each side of your two strips repeat this same process of sewing at 1 4 inch to attach your strips to your batting and it's easy as that repeat the process of placing your strips right side together on each side of your batting until you have covered every inch of your batting now all you have to do is square off your patchwork on all four sides with a rotary cutter and ruler now you have a beautiful striped design that you can turn into a small project of your choice want to take it a step further and create a diagonal stripe design repeat the same process we just used but this time place your strips diagonally onto your batting place your batting on point and place a strip going right down the middle from corner to corner place another strip right sides together and sew at 1 4 inch watch your piece grow as you sew your strips and feel free to use strips in varying widths for more dimension and movement once you have finished sewing your strips finish it off by squaring up your piece now that you have the quilt as you go technique down it's time to use up more of your scraps to make a scrappier project take a small piece of fabric for your starting piece and place it in the center of your project so we can work our way out place another piece right sides together and sew at 1 4 inch now you need to find a piece to match up with your two sewn pieces place right sides together and sew at 1 4 inch finger press open or press with an iron and grab your next fabric scrap to add it's okay if your pieces are too big because you can sew and trim as you go trim off your ex's strip and continue adding fabric scraps until you fill up your entire piece of batting don't got long enough pieces that's okay too you can sew up a few fabric scraps together to create a piece big enough like before square up your quilt as you go masterpiece and it's ready to be turned into a finished project as you can see all your fabric scraps are perfectly attached to your batting so there is no need to quilt your project but the quilting as you go fun does not stop there if you want those beautiful stitch lines visible on your project for added texture you can add the stitching as you go as well once you feel comfortable with the quilt as you go process try stitching each fabric scrap with stitch lines by sewing down the fabric piece with your needle in the down position lift and turn your fabric and place the presser foot down sew a few stitches and then lift your presser foot up and turn your fabric again and line it up with your stitch line you just stitched place your presser foot back down and stitch down the length of your piece repeat this process until you cover your whole fabric scrap place your second fabric piece right sides together and sew it 1 4 inch press your piece open and repeat the stitching of lines until you cover your second fabric scrap repeat this process until you cover your entire piece of batting to get a patchwork piece that looks like this whichever way you choose to quilt as you go you will for sure come out with a gorgeous piece of art that is ready to be turned into so many great finished projects i love how my finished quilt as you go pieces turned out and i can't wait to turn them into a finished project i'm thinking of turning them into a tote bag and a zipper pouch to match but i'm open for suggestions so make sure to comment below with what you think my quilt as you go peaches should be turned into i really hope you give this tutorial a try and if you enjoyed the video or learned something new make sure to give this video a thumbs up and share with all your quilting friends and i will see you in the next tutorial until next time happy sewing
