when we stop governing ourselves and saying god i want to do what's right i want to i want to love my neighbor then things go crazy like like we're seeing in our day right now and with the burnings and the lootings and the rioting and all of that uh not taking care of the poor not taking care of the things that need to be fixed and so then we say like you said can somebody fix it well really what we're doing is we're giving power and authority to somebody else to come and fix our problems but that usually never ends up well does it no and when you look through the beginning of america they had when things were bad they would have days of prayer when things were real bad they would have days of fasting and prayer and when things turned around they would have days of thanksgiving so it was this relationship with god and it's almost like god has plan a in plan b plan a is he blesses us so much we turn to him out of gratefulness that doesn't work there is plan b he withholds the blessings and we turn to him out of desperation for most of america's history he's blessed us and we thanked him had him on our coins and our pledge and you know on our currency and but now no matter how much god blesses us we've been wanting to kick him out of everything a couple examples from history one is um the war of 1812. so again the british empire is the most powerful empire on planet earth they just got done defeating napoleon and they've they come to america and they um are sending 4 500 troops into washington d.c the president is james madison and he has a day of prayer another day of prayer a day of fasting and prayer he's doubling down and meanwhile the british burn the white house they go dolly madison takes the painting of george washington down and she's riding on a carriage out of town while the british george cockburn actually comes to the white house goes inside sees the table set eats dinner and then torches the white house wow and then he goes to the capitol has all of his men sitting in the chairs and he says who votes to burn the american capital they all say aye and they burn our capital and the treasury and the the library of congress all these places and then uh most people don't even know that no it's they burn the capital the war of 1812 up in flames and so a tornado comes in to washington dc knocks off roofs and chimneys on the british soldiers lightning begins striking the british soldiers one um the slap horse and rider to the ground actually picks up british cannons throws them yards away and one the general george cockburn exclaimed to a lady he said great god madam is this the kind of storm to which you are accustomed to in this infernal country to which the lady replied no sir this is a special interposition of providence to drive our enemies from our city and so a british historian said more british soldiers were killed by this stroke of nature than by all the firearms the americans had mustered in the feeble defense of their city so this is a miracle here's our capital on fire and if we would have lost the british would have uh obviously taken a bunch of it back you know they had they would have taken detroit and so forth um but here's a president james madison he's the one that introduced the first amendment so he should have a clue what it's about and he's proposing days of prayer and days of fasting and prayer during this crisis you know it's so good for me to hear that that god is interested in what goes on in our country today we read in the bible about miracles that took place in israel and we said we want those things to happen in our day uh but we also have to be honest and say like you're saying that there's also judgments that god would bring upon nations even his own nation and to the extent that we our nation built on christian principles uh it makes sense that if we turn our heart away from the lord that there would be chastisement that there would be discipline uh i i hope for our good to bring us back to him what are what are some of the signs that revival is coming i think that's what we we really want is we want revival i think god wants revival uh in history what is triggered revival because we sure need that now crisis so in times of crisis people turn to christ so during the french and indian war we had the first great awakening during the french and indian war french indian war so we're talking 1740s and 50s and 60s okay there's the two biggest empires on planet earth or the french and the british and they're fighting and a lot of the battles are taking place on american soil and uh so during this time people are seeking the lord and that's when you have the preachers of george whitefield and jonathan edwards and it's called the great awakening revival whitfield is not allowed in the stodgy old churches so he preaches outside and gathers crowds of 25 000 people ben franklin prints all of his sermons distributes them up and down the colonies and this revival helps unite the colonies prior to the revolutionary war so wait a minute ben franklin printed george whitfield sermons but ben franklin was not a christian per se uh he was a presbyterian and uh then he um actually he printed the sermons of a presbyterian preacher that came to town but some of the old stodgy guys didn't like the new guy and uh franklin was putting in editorials defending the new guy when the new guy was finally kicked out that's when franklin began to absent himself from service and then he says the new preacher would come and visit him at his house and then he finally you know would give money but he wouldn't attend and so forth but he never discouraged anybody else from attending and he gave to all denominations that came to him uh in even when they started the first black church with richard allen ben franklin's given money to help him start and so with the african methodist episcopal even guys that weren't uh you know people that we would think of as being very religious like ben franklin and maybe some of the other other founders uh there is a um there's an understanding of christian principles that was just in the way that they thought because they understood that it really was the basis for a free nation right right so during this french and indian war the there was a threat that philadelphia would be attacked and ben franklin did two things he raised the first uh militia of volunteer citizens and it being a quaker state uh they were like well we're quakers we're non-violent he goes we'll make it voluntary and so like ten thousand people join and it catapults franklin to becoming the most popular guy in pennsylvania but second is he drafts a day of fasting and prayer has it printed in the pennsylvania gazette and is proposed by the legends in the legislature and passed a day of fasting and prayer i've been friends franklin yeah and but then you go fast forward you have the second great awakening revival it takes place during the war of 1812 and the barbary pirate war with the muslims another's interesting is a cholera epidemic so britain colonizes all of india and in india they had some religious people of their hindu faith that bathed in the sewage-filled ganges river and got a disease called cholera just a local disease until the british put in railroads and steamboats now this disease spread all over the world to europe and then it came with immigrants to america and so uh 150 000 americans died of cholera in 1849 uh on the california gold rush ten thousand die coming out here you know they'd go around the water hole and the cholera would get in the water and and they died in philadelphia you know st louis chicago um and so the president is zachary taylor and he has a day of fasting and prayer the first week of august of 1849. by the end of august the death rates drop off and the cholera epidemic ends wow what an amazing thing it goes from hundreds dying every day down to just a couple and then it completely ends so again we have crises from you know military attacks uh but even crises from um you know illness uh and sicknesses so what could we be doing as uh individuals as families and as a nation to pave the way for revival is that if that's a way to even say it is that something that you think throughout history people just waited for god to send revival or did revival come on the heels of people taking personal responsibility and turning to god how can we be thinking about that in our day right now um there's always the preaching of the law before people see their need for the lamb say that again there's always the preaching of the law before people see their need for the lamb so all these revivals usually start you know jonathan edwards centers in the hands of an angry god you know and then your charles finney's his lectures on revival always starts with god is a just god which means he has to judge every sin if he does not judge a sin his silence is effectively giving consent to the sin remember the old wedding ceremonies the pastor says anybody against this wedding speak now or forever hold your peace if you are sitting there silent holding your peace your silence is giving consent to the wedding so if there are sins and god's not judging them his silence is giving consent to them and if god gives consent to sin he's no longer a just god so his very nature drives him to have to judge every sin now he's a loving god and that he provided the lamb to take the judgment for the sin right remember abraham taking isaac to the top of mount moriah and isaac says dad we have the wood for the sacrifice and we have this little clay pot with the coals you know the fire for the sacrifice but where is the sacrifice and abraham says son god will provide himself a sacrifice and there's two ways of reading it one is god will have a ram up at the top of the hill or god will provide himself as the sacrifice and that's what it was jesus the only begotten son of god came to earth and he became the lamb and he took the judgment for all of our sins and if you think of it an eternal being who's innocent suffering for a finite period of time right finite is limited right so the day on the cross and whatever happened the next two days but an eternal being who's innocent suffering for a finite period of time is equal to all the finite beings who are guilty suffering for an eternal period of time an eternal being who's innocent suffering for a finite period of time is equal to all the finite beings who are guilty suffering for an eternal period of time in other words jesus literally suffered the equivalent of eternal damnation in all of our places and he's the only one that could have done it because he's the only eternal innocent being right and so when he out of love for the father and love for you and me became the lamb it allowed god to continue to be a just god because he judged every sin yeah but he's a loving god and that he provided his own son to be the judgment for this that's why we approach god through jesus now when you preach the law people begin to say gee it's one strike and you're out if you want to go to heaven by being good enough all you have to do is sin one time and you can never go to heaven by being good it's one strike and you're out and so when you preach the law then people say gee how am i gonna get there now i got your attention here's the lamb uh they use the illustration of a mirror and soap and water you go into the bathroom there's a mirror can show you how dirty your face is yeah the mirror has no power to cleanse your face but it does create the desire in you to use the soap and the water that's right the law shows you how dirty you are but it it has no power to cleanse you of your sin but it creates the desire in you for the blood of jesus to wash you of your sin
