BIG FLATHEAD!!! Muddy River Catfishing Rig / Setup

well good morning folks I tell you we've had a lot of rainfall here in the Tennessee Valley it rained all day yesterday and it was just pouring down in buckets this morning I listened to the forecast the weather radio and there's a lot of localized flooding that's occurring around in this area around the Tennessee Valley and when when I think about an excessive rain high water murky too muddy water conditions I think about catfish now I'm not a big big catfish I mean like a lot of folks are but I do like to fish for them occasionally especially in conditions like this because the chances of catching some good ones well there we up there I mean sometimes I get lucky and catch him old is but the main thing is for me is just to go out and put some big rods and the rod holders using big baits and try to catch some pretty good catfish I mean you never know when you're catfishing in Tennessee River even if you don't fish for my whole life I used to fish for them a lot years ago and I forgot a lot of stuff in the areas that I used to catch big catfish I'm not kidding most of my fishing is focused around Jane fish such as crappie bass things of that nature it's a lot different way to fish but it's very relaxing sometimes it can be rewarding but today I'm going to be using big gizzard shad and I'm just going to chop them up and cross your fingers let's see if we can catch a few catfish [Music] all right folks I'm here on the river it's a little bit higher than what I thought it would be it's a whole lot funnier than I thought it would be and it is a lot more swifter than I thought it would be so what I'm going to have to do today is find a tease that's right on the edge of drop-offs I believe a lot of times can't fish in the light to areas like this the surface temperature is 82 degrees the waters feel hot all right let's talk let's talk about equipment right here here is a $34 rod that I found on sale at Walmart it's a silver cat Kent fish rod medium action and I am basically using medium I for catfish enthusiasts I'm using medium tackle medium grade tackle it's 7 foot long medium action rod made by being them and I've called a couple catfish with it and it handles them pretty good I don't know about a real big one but I've got a dial or real right here this is a vintage real by the way it's a dial wa s s 3000 and it has 30 pound test trialing big game and I don't have a weight tied on to this yet I'm gonna have to use at least a 2 ounce weight right here even though I'm in a sort of a Eddy but my later is 50 pound test big game I like it later anywhere from 18 to 24 inches long I'm probably going to be using 8 to 10 out gamatatsu now this is snailed because it has offset in the shame the straight ones I just put a pallet Martin on a big swivel and of course I use a bead I don't have my weight on yet but the bead is to protect a knot okay and then this this rod right here is a whisker will seven and a half foot long medium action with forty pound test line it's the same rig okay and let's bait us cut us some shad up right here well gentlemen see if there's any fish on this drop off I'm now in 25 feet of water and I hope my anchor a hold it is so far but we'll see look here folks I got a takedown that here yeah like I got a good fish right here good fish now it's like he's pulling the anchor loose yeah the guy finally watching it Oh me I believe he's tangled up in my other line but is the good woman I got lucky ooh-whee he's stripping some drag this is a big cap to bleed it's a big flat head let me move my hands see y'all seam right here I'm just gonna take my time there's a lot of current right here and it's happiness fish my goodness what a flathead I'm gonna loosen my drag a little bit I don't want to lose this fish I'm going through a lot right here this weather is bad we'll just wear him down looky there what a flathead oh me oh my my my some monster get my man ready right here when he gives up maybe more I'll live in one there we go nice a big cat see big I vote there you now my scales ain't working right I don't know what this fish weighs it's wany but II were between 25 to 29 still crazy from fiction it's rolling away when they get home get the smaller scale that's encouragement but you say it's our big right on the edge of a brake line right here you know got lucky get out of the rain all right let's release it's a big boa right here let's get him in the water goodness what can't you see that's what I'm talking about right there is exactly what I'm talking about what's letting go there he goes I want y'all look what a takedown right here okay I got a big fish right here folks then loosen the drag this is a real big fish now there's a lot of current right here I've had to move I'm gonna have to take my time on this one this is a huge fish and I'm gonna it's a blue ease up to the top of the water already I'm gonna reel this one out of the way excuse me please it's a real big change right here and I've got 30 pound now in his current like this he may not be as big as I think he is but he's a good fish real good fish yeah I've had to move out from under my flathead hole because there's too much debris coming down the river I just couldn't keep my bait down so I just moved up the river I move a lot when I'm catfishing if I don't get bit [Music] in the first 20 or 25 minutes I'll just move he wants to come to this side so I'll let him I don't have any choice oh my goodness what a blue I'm loosing my drag I don't have much stretch in that short distance that's where you'll top him off so you don't really watch it he's a good one he's not as big as I thought he was but he's a big blue this current it makes it tough nat this fish now a flathead I'll reach in there I don't care how big he is and lift him but a blue that's a different story now they can hurt you unless you got a glove that's a big blue he's a little bigger than phony folks that's a big song going to the truth okay powerful fish larry is that's a big blue there's some out here bigs are let's see if we can catch one my goodness let's let him go it's a good one folks let's lady go watch him right there and there he goes that's the fun part everyone okay let's get rigged up and catch a note let's wing it back out there I'm not throw up at about 60 foot right there let me go to the bottle now I mean about 20 feet of water right here make sure that Drake's it I'll tell you what they can pop this line like nobody's business you don't watch it you need to get that dragged if you're gonna use a rod holder adjusted the worth when a fish hits it he can just peel that you want it tight enough to where the hook will hook the fish but you want it loose enough to where that fish can't break your line this one right here has got 40 pound test line on it but it don't make any difference a big blue 45 50 pound he can pop it like that alright I've been here for about 20 minutes after I caught that catfish blue and I have another bag so I'm gonna move and relocate 20 to 30 minutes and I'm gone Elmo wants catch another let's move y'all see that that fish is hooked itself I just waited till he hooks okay I mean loosen my drag was another big one he's done to the top of the water don't see ya my goodness let me reel this with me and excuse me if I don't he'll be in it don't do it every time the worst thing you can do when you get a rod holder is to reach and grab you rod just let that fish when you got this type of current if he's big enough he'll hook yourself and I like these monster rod holders I'll be able to use these for the rest of my life because they'll last that the rest of my life this is a good fish right here and this is just thirty pound test mono so if you're like to use this type of tackle which is really considered medium great tackle you're better off not the horse to fish just let him tire yourself out the harder you fight a catfish the harder he'll fight you so Google Aires Purdy blue in current you it just they just fight that much harder they feel good they have a lot of oxygen in the water here let's let him come on in here my goodness there we go we got him good blue fat and healthy just put him right there like that I don't wake up man that was tough throw that hook out you have to roll with them top hooks out are you good feet landing go go on back folks time to go home and eat some beans taters and it sliced some onion well pentose and grating orders a slice of onion and some corn bread and a big old glass of buttermilk own it by calls I'm hungry I can't fishing is real simple it's one of the most simple ways to fish in my opinion very little work real enjoyable it's a sit back way of fishing but it does require finding the fish and there's a lot of little things involved in that but you know it don't take long to master catfish and I'm not a what you call a a catfish master by no means I don't I don't target that particular species a whole lot used to but in the last 15 years I haven't but it's a lot of fun hey get out here to enjoy yourself and thank y'all very much for everything y'all doing the great comments you know
