will be having amen a wonderful time in the word of almighty god tonight we want to begin by looking at our first installment jesus christ the good shepherd jesus christ the good shepherd and i know tonight that all of us can identify with jesus christ as our good shepherd the shepherd of our souls and so tonight it is our desire to explore the theme jesus christ the good shepherd jesus christ who is our good shepherd i want to begin by reading for us from saint john chapter 10 verses 11 to 18 and i ask that you join with me as we read the text from saint john 10 verses 11 to 18. let us brothers and sisters hear the inspired word of god i am the good shepherd the good shepherd given his life for the sheep but he that is an ireland and not the shepherd whose own the sheep are not see it the wolf come in and leave the sheep and flee it and the wolf catches them and scattered the sheep the highly fleet because he is an ireland and carrot not for the sheep i am the good shepherd and know my sheep and i'm an unknown of mine as the father knoweth me even so no i the father and i lay down my life for my sheep and other sheep have i which are not of this fold them also must i bring and they shall hear my voice and there shall be one fold and one shepherd therefore that my father loved me because i laid down my life that i may take it again no man take it from me but i lay down of myself i have power to lay it down and i have power to take it again this commandment have i received off my father the word of the lord and we say thanks be to almighty god i want to begin our discussion on the topic of jesus christ being our all in all and tonight our focus is on jesus christ the good shepherd i want to begin by declaring for us that jesus christ himself declared that he is the good shepherd it is not a summation of our own views or our own thoughts but jesus christ himself declares to us that he is the good shepherd we see that in saint john 10 verses 11 and in fact it is also repeated in verse 14 of this chapter chapter 10 where jesus simply says i am the good shepherd in verse 14 again he reminds us i am the good shepherd now jesus christ as our good shepherd shows to us brothers and sisters the relationship of believers with with jesus christ if he is our shepherd then obviously we are his sheep we are the sheep of his pastor so the lord is our shepherd therefore we are his flock notice that oftentimes that the bible would describe that the believers the child of god as the sheep of his pasture the flock of god the apostles were told to feed the flock of god over which god has made them oversee us and so often times that the bible refers to god's children as the sheep of his pasture or the flock of god the bible also describes the lord jesus christ as our shepherd in hebrews chapter 13 and verse 20 the lord jesus christ is defined as the great shepherd not just the good shepherd but he is described as the great shepherd hear what the bible says in hebrews chapter 13 and verse 20. now the god of peace that brought again from the dead our lord jesus christ that great shepherd of the sheep through the blood of the everlasting covenant and so we see brothers and sisters that jesus christ is not only described as the good shepherd but he is described in hebrews chapter 13 and verse 20 as the great shepherd the great shepherd interestingly enough not only is he referred to as the great shepherd but in first peter chapter 5 and verse 4 he is also described as the chief shepherd not just the good shepherd or the great shepherd but he's also described as the chief shepherd first peter chapter 5 and verse 4 the bible says and when the chief shepherd shall appear he shall receive a crown of glory that fear that not a way here peter reminds us that we have a chief shepherd and he's coming back again and when our chief shepherd appears he will give us a crown of glory that faded not away it's not like the crown that they would receive at the end of the olympic games so those who have won the race made of a rate of plan that withers away after a couple of days but he was speaking about a crown an eternal crime a crown that will not fade away and so jesus christ is described as the chief shepherd now also peter describes the lord jesus christ again as the shepherd and bishop of our souls we see that in first peter chapter 2 and verse 25 where the bible says for he were as sheep going astray but now returned onto the shepherd and the bishop of your souls and so again we see jesus in saint john chapter 10 declaring i am the good shepherd in hebrews chapter 13 and verse 20 he is described as the great shepherd also we see praise god in first peter chapter five that he is the chief shepherd and in first peter two he is the bishop of our souls now we as his children are his flock god's children are the sheep of his flock that is the clear to us in psalm 95 verses 17 the psalmist says for he is our god and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hands they are for the people of god the children of god here is referred to as the sheep of his head therefore i declared to us then that the relationship between the believer and christ is one of a shepherd and a sheep he is the shepherd the good shepherd the great shepherd the chief shepherd the shepherd and bishop of our souls and we are the sheep of his hand or the people of his pasture the word of god says for he is our god and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand today if you will hear his voice hard not your heart as in the provocation as in the day of temptation in the wilderness again we are reminded in psalm 100 and verse 3 a very well-known psalm psalm 103 we are reminded that we are the sheep of his pastor the word of god says no we not not the lord he is god it is he that has made us and not we ourselves we are his people and the sheep of his pasture again the word of god reminds us that god's children are the sheep of his pasture i want to share with us another scripture from psalm 79 and verse 13 where the bible again reminds us that we are the sheep of his pastor so the word of god says so we thy people and the sheep of thy pastor will give thee thanks river we will show forth thy praise to all generation praise god we the people of god we god's children are the sheep of his pastor he is our good shepherd he is our great shepherd he is our chief shepherd he is the shepherd and bishop of our souls and because we serve a great shepherd because we serve praise god a chief shepherd because we serve the shepherd and bishop of our souls we will give thanks however we will show forth his praises to all generation it tells me then that the sheep of his pastor has a responsibility to give god thanks the sheep of his pastor have a responsibility to give god the praise therefore every sheep that is of god's pastor is a praiser every sheep that is of god's pastor is a worshiper my god if you don't ever have a title if you're never been called a bishop or an elder or a missionary or any of the cycles that you see be being labeled or abandoned about make sure that above all you're a saint who is a worshiper you are the sheep of his pastor you are a praiser you're a worshiper because when the praises go up the blessings will come down the word of god says god is seeking to worship us and say john 4 the bible reminds us that the father's seeking such to worship him and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth therefore when we declare jesus christ as our shepherd and we declare ourselves to be a sheep we are saying i am a worshiper because psalm 1979 verse 13 says so thy people and the sheep of thy pastor will give thee thanks forever we will show for thy praises to all generations praise god jesus christ our good shepherd now brothers and sisters when we declare jesus christ to be our good shepherd we are declaring four sacred truths number one when we declare jesus christ to be the good shepherd it speaks to his deity that he is not just man but he is both god and man he is fully god and fully man when we declare that jesus christ is our good shepherd we are declaring the sufficiency of our god we are declaring how sufficient our god is and we are declaring also the exclusivity of our god and the superiority of the lord jesus christ let's look and understand jesus said in in saint john chapter 10 and verse 11 and verse 14 that i am the good shepherd i am the good shepherd please remember that when jesus christ came and declared i am the good shepherd he was speaking in context in a jewish context to a jewish audience who understood what he meant when he uses the term ayah it was not the first time that they were being introduced to the term ayah do you remember when god called moses and instructed moses to to say unto israel that it's the hour of your deliverance and to tell fear it is time to let god's people go in exodus chapter 3 verses 13 to 14 moses went to god and the bible says and moses said unto god listen to what moses said unto god he says when i come unto the children of israel and i declare unto them what am i going to say unto them and shall i swat shall i see unto them the god of your fathers has sent me unto you and they shall say to me what is his name and what shall i say unto them here moses was asking what is it that i am going to say concerning you when they ask me about you what it is that i am going to see they are going to ask me lord what is your name what shall i see unto them and the word of god says and god said unto moses i am that i am and he said thus shall thou say unto the children of israel i am have sent me unto you now when the lord uses the term i am it speaks of the sovereignty of god in other words i am meaning i am what i am i am who i am i am what you need me to be i am your deliverer i am your victory i am your chain breaker i am the one who will set you free from bondage i am the omnipotent one the omniscient one oh my god the omnipresent one i am the only potenti i am the alpha and the omega therefore when jesus came and when we studied the book of john jesus then adds because the new testament sheds light on what is written in the old when jesus came in oh my god and walked among men he began to declare the i am-ness of his being and so we find in saint john in the book of john 7 irons that jesus spoke over his life in saint john chapter 6 and verse 35 he told the people i am the bread of life if you're hungry i will feed you i will sustain you in saint john 8 and verse 12 he reminds them i am the light of the world hallelujah in saint john 10 verses 7 and 9 he says i am the door of the sheep and if any man enters any other way apart from the door if they are thieves and robbers he says i am the door any man enters through me will be saved any man enters any other way will not be saved i am the door and then in saint john 10 11 and 14 in our text tonight he reminds us that i am the good shepherd my god almighty not just a shepherd but i am the good shepherd in saint john 11 and verse 25 he reminds us that i am the resurrection and the life therefore when moses asks who shall i say send me and what is thy name he says tell them i am that i am here jesus declares the i am-ness of his being of his deity because he was fully god and fully manned jehovah god in the old testament is jesus christ in the new in saint john 14 and verse 6 he reminds us that i am the way the truth and the life praise god he says i am the way the truth and the life and then finally in saint john 15 verses 1 and verse 5 he reminds us that i am the true vine and remember he says if anyone abides in me you shall bear fruit but if you abide not in me the branch you will you will die and you will be caught off praise god therefore he reminds us that i am praise god the true vine so not only when we declare jesus christ as our good shepherd are we speaking to his deity but we are also speaking of the sufficiency of christ the sufficiency of christ when we speak of him as our good shepherd we are saying that we serve a god who is sufficient to meet our every need be its spiritual need financial need physical need healing in our bodies emotional needs whatever our needs are when we declare that jesus christ is our good shepherd we are simply saying to the world listen the god that i serve is a god that is able to meet my every need that he is a god that is able to meet and to supply my every need therefore if god is sufficient for us then we need not look to other sheep for help we must look to the good shepherd because he is the one who supplies our every need and and this is what the psalmist reminds us if you remember one of the most well-known psalm of all the bible psalm 23 which most of us can should be able to recite for our days in sunday school the lord is my shepherd i shall not want in other words god is sufficient to supply all of my needs and so when i say and when you declare that jesus christ is your all in all you're saying that as a good shepherd he is my jehovah jihad he's the one that is able to provide for all our needs the lord is my shepherd the psalmist says i shall not want in other words the lord shall supply all of my needs according to his riches in glory we find that praise god in philippians chapter 4 and verse 19 where where the apostle paul writes to the church at philippi and reminds them that the lord who is their good shepherd shall supply and notice that the definite article shall not me not might but shall supply all your needs according to his riches in glory by christ jesus and that's why the psalmist with boldness could say i shall not want because as our good shepherd he is our provider aren't you glad tonight that you serve the good shepherd who is the provider of every need that you have listen there can be no need that the good shepherd doesn't know about every need in your life he knows about it and every need he will provide can you just type in the chat your good shepherd is my provider god shall supply hear me god shall supply all of our leads according to his riches in glory and therefore if the lord is our provider and if the lord praise god is the one who is the source of all good gifts that comes to us that we need not worry so many folks are getting nervous about what's happening in our economy and i hear the panic running through the nation today as as as as we are at the brink of war between russia and ukraine and people are nervous about what will happen with gas prices and oil prices and you know people are making the connection between what would happen to the prices of goods and services if the oil if there becomes an oil crisis coming out of all of this uh tension that is happening in russia and with ukraine and people are getting nervous and scared but god wants to remind us that listen our source is not in the economy of man but our source is in god's economy he is our good shepherd and we can say like the psalmist the lord is my shepherd i shall not want and i want to remind us that we can rest on the promises of god knowing that he is our all in all that he is our everything praise god not only does it speak to the deity of christ when we talk about jesus christ as our good shepherd or the sufficiency of christ but it also speaks to the exclusivity of jesus christ notice in saint john 10 and verse 11 he did not say i am one of the good shepherd he is not one of the good shepherds he is the only good shepherd he says i am the the definite article the good shepherd i am the good shepherd it says here i am the good shepherd in other words every other shepherd that came before me we're not the good shepherd in fact in in john 10 verses 78 he says jesus said unto them verily i say unto you i am the door of the sheep and all that ever came before me in other words i am the only good shepherd and everyone that ever came before me he says they are thieves and robbers but guess what the true sheep the sheep did not hear them praise god so it speaks to the exclusivity of christ that he is the only good shepherd aren't you glad that you know the good but not just another but not just one of the shepherd but the good shepherd exclusivity of christ jesus declares himself to be the good shepherd but then not only does it speak to the exclusivity of christ but it speaks to the superiority of jesus christ because in the greek the word good that is used in sin john chapter 10 [Music] speaks to that which is ideal the word good in the greek there speaks to that which is at the pinnacle at the top meaning there is nothing above or the perfect example of something that which is beautiful excellent and supreme therefore when we talk about god being our good shepherd we are talking about one who is excellent in all his ways we are talking about a god who is beautiful in every way we are talking about a god who is perfection beyond perfection if i can even say that we are talking about a god who is above all there is none to be compared to him there is none that can be likened unto him he's excellent in his love and supreme in his virtue is excellent in his character is supreme in his power who can be likened unto our god who can be compared to our god he has no equal he has no comparison my god he stands alone above all in the name of jesus he is superior so when jesus uses that term i am and he uses the word good he's saying i am above all i am the supreme one praise god i am the good shepherd praise god hallelujah i am the good shepherd he's excellent in all his ways and what makes him so good is that he's excellent in his love towards his sheep he loves us with an excellent and an everlasting love we find that in psalm 36 and verse 7 hear what the word of god says about our good shepherd how excellent is thy loving kindness oh god oh excellent our supreme how perfect is thy loving kindness oh god therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of thy wings because we serve an excellent god because we serve a good shepherd we can trust him we can lay our heads on his breasts we can rely and rest under the shadow of his wings knowing that he will take care of us knowing he will provide for us knowing he will protect us as the good shepherd jesus christ of all in all he is our good shepherd amen praise the name of our god our excellent now jesus explains to us what makes him such a good shepherd and the plain truth is that the good shepherd dies for his sheep the goodness of the shepherd is exemplified by the statement that was made by our lord jesus christ that he lays down his life for the sheep notice again let's look at said john 10 verse 11 carefully i am the good shepherd and if you want to know what the good shepherd does he says the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep interestingly enough when we look at jesus christ there is a twist to this story of jesus christ being the good shepherd because when we look at the narrative of the of jesus christ as the shepherd we cannot escape the reality that because the shepherd gave his life for the sheep the shepherd has become the lamb for sinner's slave therefore jesus christ is both described as a shepherd and a lamb he is the good shepherd the chief shackle the great shepherd the shepherd and bishop of our souls but he's also the lamb [Music] that was slain for the sins of many do you remember that when john saw him coming praise god the word of god is saying john chapter 1 and verse 29 when when john saw him coming john says the bible says and the next day john seeth jesus coming onto him and said behold lamb of god which taketh away the sins of the world the lamb of god that taken away the sins of the world what makes this shepherd so good is that he died for the sheep he laid his life down for his sheep therefore the shepherd has become the lamb so he's both shepherd and lamb that that that's why he is god because only god could be both shepherd and larry under the lord jesus christ could declare himself to be the good shepherd and the lamb for sinners slain he dies for the sheep but i want us to understand that this shepherd didn't just die because of an accident he was willing to die for us he died willing that should be for us in john 10 verse 18 he says no man taken it from me i laid down myself speaking about his life he says listen this was not by compulsion or by force i willingly chose to die for you i have power to lay it down and i have power to take it up again this commandment have i received of my father in other words he says no man taken my life i laid down when the roman soldiers boxed him when they when they when they nailed him to the cross it was not just the roman soldiers the bible said someone says he could have called ten thousand angels to come to his rescue he could have spoken a word and every roman soldier would die but no he willingly laid his life down he willingly went to calvary for us he willingly suffered the shame of calvary for us therefore he says listen no man taketh my life for me i willingly lay it down remember he says not my will lord but thy will be done not only did he willingly die for us but he died for us because he loved us it was love that held him on the cross it was love that led him to calvary it was love that held him on calvary and it was love love for you and love for me hear what paul writes to the church of galatia in galatians chapter 2 and verse 20 about what led jesus christ to die for us as the good shepherd paul says i am crucified with christ nevertheless i live yet not i but christ liveth in me and the life which i now live in the flesh i live behind the faith of the son of god who loved me and gave himself for me in other words paul was simply saying he loved me to die for me greater love the word of god says has no man than this that a man should lay down his life for a friend but then we weren't even friends we were enemies of the cross when he died for us paul says while we were yet sinners while we were in our undone state while we were messed up and polluted christ died for us therefore the shepherd loved the sheep enough to die for us he loved us he went to calvary willingly he died for us why because he loved us that's why the songman declares such love such wondrous love such love such wondrous love that god should love as sinners such as i how wonderful is love like this and then i think in the second verse it says that christ should join so freely in the scheme although it meant his death on calvary did every human tongue find no blessing than love divine who has ransomed me such love such wondrous love what a great shepherd we have what a good shepherd we have that he willingly and lovingly died for us he loved us he he loved us but then i want us to also observe that the bible says that the good shepherd knows his sheep hear what the word of god says in john 10 verse 14. i am the good shepherd and know my sheep not only do i love them but i know them and i am known of mine in other words he's saying this relationship between the sheep and the shepherd is a a a dual relationship i know them and they know me i know my sheep and i'm known of mine in other words later one is going to say my sheep know my voice they are attuned to my voice they know when i speak they know when i call they are attentive to the sound of my voice my sheep know my voice he knows this and he is known of his sheep jesus speaks in positive positive terms of his in of his inward union with his own not an external relationship with an inward relationship the relationship between them is one of friendship and intimacy and so when he speaks of knowing us he's not speaking of a cursory knowledge i know of the prime minister of jamaica the honorable andrew wholeness but i can't say that i have intimate knowledge of him so we can know about a person and still don't know the true person but when jesus refers to his knowledge of us he says listen i have intimate knowledge about my sheep and my sheep knows in an intimate way the term no does not denote knowledge of the theoretical or rational kind it's not just head knowledge it's not just knowledge about but in the old testament semantic sense it is a personal bond and knowing that leads to oneness and knowing that leads to communion and knowing that leads to fellowship and knowing that leads to a relationship with god a personal you know god for yourself you don't just know about god but you have a union you have communion with god and you know god for your self therefore when he uses the term knows he's not speaking simply or theoretical knowledge but he's speaking about knowledge by relationship he knows us in an intimate way and again i want to just point out how much he knows us he knows us in such an intimate way that he in fact he knew us before we were formed in our mother's womb because he is omniscient he knows all things he knows us before we were even formed before we were even born remember uh it was the prophet jeremiah in jeremiah chapter one that the lord jesus christ remind me that before i formed thee in the belly i knew thee and before thou came us out of the womb before you were born before your mother gave birth to you i sanctified thee and i ordained thee a prophet on to the nation so before jeremiah was even born god had anointed him and declared a purpose over his life a destiny for uh jeremiah to be a prophet on to the nation so the lord says listen i don't just know about you i know you in an intimately before you were evil before you knew yourself god says i knew aren't you glad that god knows everything about us he knows our uprising he knows our don't set it he knows the plan and the purpose that he has he knows the design that he has our life before i formed thee in the belly i knew and before thou camest out of the womb i sanctified the word of god says not only that but we see also the psalmist david reminding us in psalm 103 verses 13 to 14 he says like a father pity at his children so the lord pityeth them that fear him for he knoweth our frame and he remembers that we are dusty understands and knows our limitations he knows about frailty he knows everything about us brothers and sisters he knows our strong points he knows our weakness he knows our proclivities he knows everything about us he knows our needs he knows everything there is nothing that is unknown to our god he knows his sheep as a father pity and his children so the lord protects them that fearing for he knoweth our frame and he remembereth that we are but thus the lord knows every secret in our hearts there is nothing that we can hide from him word of god in psalm 139 verses 1 and 2 he says oh lord thou hast searched me and known me thou knowest my dawn sitting and my uprising and guess what the understanders my thoughts are far off in other words god even knows what was going through our mind god knows what we're thinking you know sometimes persons can look at us and they look at us from the outside and they just can see what is projected on the outside but they don't know what is happening in our psyche what is happening in our minds but god says listen whatever whatever you want to project whatever facade i can look beyond that i know what's happening behind that facade because i know you're a prize and i know you're downsetting and i understand what's happening in your mind i know and understand your thoughts and you understand what's going through our minds so the psalmist says oh lord thou has searched me and known me don't know it's my don't sit in my uprising don't understand this my thoughts are far off god knows us aren't you glad that he knows us he knows us to the point that even the very number here upon our head he knows about it not one falls and he does not know about it therefore nothing that before the child of god takes god by surprise because he knows everything about us he knows our beginning and our ending he knows our air beginning before we were even born told german news not only do god knows if she a good shepherd knows is she but guess what the sheep knows him and knows his voice so the relationship is one of knowledge the shepherd knows the sheep but the sheep also knows the shepherd an eternal life is linked to knowing god let me say that again eternal life is linked to knowing god if we're going to experience eternal life we must know god say in john 17 and verse 3 the bible says and this is life eternal and this is what that they might know thee the only true god and jesus christ whom thou has sent in other words eternal life eternal life is wrapped up in our understanding and our knowledge of god eternal life is wrapped up in our understanding and knowledge of god also his sheep knows his voice and knowing god and all his eternal life linked to knowing god but knowing god involves walking in the spirit of truth and when we speak of the spirit of truth we are talking about the word of god walking according to god's principles walking according to god's precepts walking according to the things of god so the bible says that for in first john 4 verse 6 for we are of god he that knoweth god heareth us and he that is not of god heareth not us hereby know we the spirit of truth and the spirit of error instead of john 17 and verse 17 the bible says sanctify them through thy truth thy word is truth therefore when we know god we operate in the spirit of truth we operate in the word of god it says sanctify them through thy truth what's truth the word of god is truth thy word is truth therefore the sheep knows the shepherd and the sheep walks in accordance with the word of god if we ever want to know if we are the sheep of his pasture watch how we walk watch it whether we are walking in the spirit of truth or we are walking in the spirit of error when we are walking in the spirit of error we are a goat when we are walking in the spirit of those who walk in the spirit of truth are the sheep of his pasture we are the people of his pastor therefore knowing god involves walking in the spirit of truth notice the shepherd knows everything about the sheep and the she knows the shepherd in fact when you study the writings in those days that the shepherd would in fact know the sheep by name and would call each sheep by name and no matter whether or not there is a mixture of locks between shepherds when that when the shepherd of that particular flock gets up and start to call the name of his sheep those sheep know the voice of their shepherd and they get up and follow their shepherd my sheep knows my voice it says in and ireland they will not follow because they know my voice brothers and sisters there are many voices that are calling today and it's very important that if we are not to be deceived in this last and closing days of them it's important that we know the voice of our savior that we know the voice of our good body and that we will be attuned to his voice that when we hear his voice we will follow and not only must he be attuned to his voice but we must be alert to the many voices of deception that if we are not that will be calling we must be alert to what the enemy will try to do praise god and the tricks of the enemy we have to be alert praise god with what god is doing in this day and in this age because we are living in a time of great spiritual deception and the voices of the enemy will be calling for the someone says but my savior's voice will be sweeter than on sweeter than all therefore we must know the voice of almighty god i want to move then to look at the concept of knowing god involves walking in love not just walking in the spirit of truth and that knowing god involves is linked to eternal life but knowing god involves walking in love anyone who knows god will operate in the spirit of love first john 4 verse 7 says beloved let us love one another for love is of god love is of god and everyone that loveth is born of god and knoweth god hear what the bible says everyone that is born of god everyone that loveth is born of god and knoweth god in verse 8 it says he that loveth not knoweth not god why because god is love everything about the good shepherd is bordered by love everything that he does he does in love therefore if we do not love we do not know the true shepherd now the shepherd has a rod and a staff let's look at the rod and the staff psalm 23 and verse 4 says thy rod and thy staff speaking about the lord is my shepherd i shall not want by the time the psalmist reaches the fourth verse he says thy rod and thy staff they do comfort me now the rod is a relatively short every club-like device and the staff is a longer thinner uh instrument with a hook or hook at the end a circular look at the end if you look at the picture that is before you we see the rod and the staff now what is the purpose of the rod and what is the purpose of the staff now the rod is a tool for guarding and protecting and the staff is for guiding and for directing therefore the the the shepherd uses the rod as an instrument of protection so the rod was used to defend the sheep against predators remember that there were wolves and lions and coyotes and all these kinds of creatures that would prey upon the very vulnerable sheep and since the sheep are often defenseless it was up to the shepherd to adequately defend this plot therefore the defense of the sheep was the responsibility of the shepherd and so the shepherd walked with a club-like instrument called a rod and a nice hard rod made for a solid weapon against any enemies and so uh the shepherd would strike at the wolf when he sees the wolf coming on across the sheepful they would drive the wolf away in this way the rod then is a symbol of god's protection he goes before you to defend you from your very enemy therefore when the bible speaks up thy rather next staff they do comfort me the psalmist is saying i'm comforted knowing that i have a shepherd who is fighting my battles for me and aren't you glad tonight that you have a good shepherd who has a rod that will fight every battle for us that we don't have to fight our own battles knowing that there is a god who is fighting for us a god who is fighting with us and knowing that he is the conquering line of the tribe of judah and tell me who can stand before us when god is for us when we go in the name of jesus therefore the shepherd would use his rod against the enemies of the sheep and i want us to know that god is our defense god is our protection and he uses his rod praise god to guide and to protect us and to guard us against the attack of the enemy the staff however was used to guide the sheep therefore the rod was used against the enemy of the sheep but the staff was used for the purposes of the sheep the staff was used to guide and to rescue the sheep the staff was used to guide the sheep across open fields and along a rocky hillside it was a handy tool for making sure that the sheep stays on track that they do not wander away from the sheepfold in the field that shepherd would use the curly end of the staff to pull a sheep out of the thick brush or to lift it up if it happened to fall or was injured therefore the the shepherd would use that staff and put it around the neck of the sheep and pull that sheep up out off and that pit that it may have fallen in therefore god the lord jesus christ is also he who rescues us praise god now i want us to look at how the bible speaks of god as being the one who guides remember amen it is the shepherd who guides praise god uh guides us using the staff when when the sheep is going astray he would use the staff to bring the sheep back in order and the bible tells us in psalm 48 and verse 14 it says that for this god is our god and forever and ever he will be our guide even on to death therefore the lord is our guide as our good shepherd he uses his staff to guide us praise god he can look and see praise god the picture here amen of the shepherd using the staff to guide the sheep when the sheep may have uh seek to wander away here he pulls them back here he guides them in the path that they need to go therefore my god how many times we could have gone astray but the lord jesus christ has guided us back praise god into the path of righteousness guide us back where we need to go the lord is our guide psalm 20 32 and verse 8 the bible says i will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go i will guide thee with my eyes therefore again it shows us that our good shepherd is our guide how does he guide us he guides us with his staff he guides us with his staff not only does the staff die but remember the staff also rescues us and listen to what the bible says in psalm 145 and verse 14. the lord upholdeth all that fall and raise it up all those that be bowed up remember sometimes the sheep would stray away and would fall into a ditch and cannot come up but yet it is the shepherd who would use that staff and would pull that sheep and rescue that sheep out of amen the dilemma therefore the shepherd would put the staff under the body of the sheep and would raise that sheep up out of the ditch so it is that we serve a god my god almighty though we fall we will not be utterly cast on for the lord will lift us up he lifts us up when we fall the word of god reminds us in psalm 37 and verse 23 to it says the steps of a good man are ordered by the lord and he delighted in his ways though he fall he shall not utterly be cast on for the lord who let him with his hands aren't you glad tonight that you serve a good but my god almighty that guides us into the paths of righteousness that shows us where we go that steers us out of danger how many times were we prone to wonder and walk in our own willful way but the good shepherds tears us out of trouble how many times have we fallen how many times have we found ourselves in a ditch in a rot in our lives a rotten ditch in our spiritual lives and can't get up but we feel oh my god the love of the good shepherd and the staff of the good shepherd that pulls us up out of that horrible pit that pulls us up out of the pit of the spear that pulls us up out of the pit of depression the steps of a good man are ordered by the lord and he delighted in his ways the word of god says though he fall he shall not be utterly cast out for the lord uphold him with his hands praise the name of our god therefore jesus christ is a compassionate shepherd and compassion is actually love in action it is love that drives us to do something about the condition love is a verb love is an action where therefore when we speak of compassion we are talking about love in action said matthew 9 verses 36 the bible says when jesus saw that the condition of the jews the multitude the bible says he was moved with compassion on them because they fainted and were scattered abroad as sheep having no shepherd when he saw israel when he saw god's people uh gone as straight he was moved with compassion that compassion led him to calvary to die not just for the jews but to die for even the gentiles to die for the whosoever will to die for all humanity therefore he is a compassionate savior he is a compassionate shepherd book of lamentations chapter 3 verses 22 to 23 speaks of his compassion for us and reminds us it says ah it is of the lord's mercy that we are not consumed so good is the shepherd that he doesn't consume us in his anger because his compassions feel not guess what they are new every morning great is thy faithfulness it is compassion that allows goodness and mercy to follow us all the days of our life and the promise that we shall dwell in the house of the lord forever and forever it is this compassion that allows new mercies to attend us every morning to daily load us with benefits every day that we awake to the new uh morning we are loaded with mercy we are loaded with grace we are loaded with the very compassion of our god we are loaded not only is a compassionate savior but the good shepherd leads us in the right path he doesn't allow us to walk in our our own will for the he you see he is a leader he leads his sheep now the difference between cattle and sheep is that cattle you have to drive cattle if you ever watch a western show when they're moving those buffaloes or cows or whatever you notice that they're always driving them from behind but you don't drive sheep we lead sheep we drive from behind but we lead from in front jesus christ as the good shepherd leaves the sh he goes before us and leads us into the path of righteousness the path of right principles right relationships right living he leads us and that is why in saying the word of god tells us in in in psalm 23 verses the second part of the third verse he says he leads me into the path of righteousness for his namesake he leads us child of god into the paths of righteousness for his name's sake so as the good shepherd he leads us and where is he leading us he's not never ever the lord will never lead us astray the lord will never lead us out of his will the lord you know some people say that but leaving for the lord to do this and to leave church and to do it no no god will never lead us out of his will god will never lead us out of the paths of righteousness wherever god leads us he leads us into right standing within he leads us into the path of righteousness the psalmist says he leadeth me how does he lead us he goes before us he clears the way for us he doesn't stand behind us and drive us he goes before us and lead us word of god says in john 10 verse 4 and when he put it forth his own sheep the word of god says he goeth before them he leads from in front he goes before them he clears the way for us and the sheep follow him for they know his voice he leads us praise the name of our god we will we are coming to our clubs not only is he compassionate and not only does he lead us into the path of righteousness as a good shepherd he cares for the wandering sheep jesus has much to say about the wandering sheep and i wanted it clear that all of us at one point or another has wandered away from god don't tell me that from the day you got saved we have been so sanctified that you have never wondered in thoughts and words or deeds from the full the only reason why we can boast is because we have a good shepherd that will be wander away he will leave the 1909 to find that one wandering sheep notice what jesus says in saint matthew 18 verse 12 it is jesus who raises this issue of the wandering sheep when he says how think he if a man have a hundred sheep and one of them has gone astray does he not leave the 1909 and go it into the mountains and seek it that which is gone astray aren't you glad tonight that you serve a great shepherd that even when we wander away he doesn't leave us to stray but he he goes after us and brings us back into the fall if you if you know that you have a good shepherd who cares sort of wondering she just type in the chat thank you jesus we're there in the zoo facebook youtube our twitter type thank you jesus because listen when we went astray his loving hands reach out to us and pull us back he cares for the wandering sheep we used to sing a song in the earlier days calm down found of every blessing to my heart to sing thy praise and in the second in the last verse it says oh to grace how great that that's a daily i am constrained to be but let thy goodness like affect him bind my wandering heart to thee then the psalmist is prone to wonder lord i feel it prone to leave the god i love here's my heart lord take and seal it seal it for like quartz above he goes after the wandering sheep and not only does he go after the wandering sheep and brings the wandering sheep back home but guess what do you know that out of love the lord disciplines his sheep the lord disciplines the wandering sheep christ disciplines us in love now discipline is not punishment because oftentimes punishment is is something that is mated out for actions we have done in the past and oftentimes punishment is done in anger but discipline is training and correction for the future that is done in love when the lord disciplines us he he changes our character and makes us into a better person therefore our lives are transformed therefore in our future actions you see a transformation we see a change in our actions discipline is training and correction for the future therefore when we discipline our children by saying your behavior must change in the future god's love involved discipline psalm praise god 190 119 and verses 60 6 67 to 68 tells us here the psalmist says i used to wander off until you disciplined me but now i closely follow your word you are good and you do only go teach me your decrees it is from the new living translation here what the service was saying this is i used to wander away until you start to discipline me and out of the discipline i have learned to closely follow your word you are good and do only good and teach me your decree how many know that the lord will discipline us to bring us back into right relationship to teach us how to work in the future here it is i used to wonder the issue wondering the action you disciplined me what is happening in the future i now closely follow your word the declaration you have disciplined me in love you are good and you do only good god's intention in discipline us is not in discipline in disciplining us is not to hurt us but to do us good to teach us his decree to teach us his statute to teach us his word hebrews chapter 12 verses 6 to 7 the word of god says for whom the lord loves he chastened him and scourging every son whom he receiveth if he enjoyed chastening god deal it with you as with sons for what son is he who the father chastened not that word chastened simply means to discipline when we look at the same uh verse from the new living translation it says for the lord disciplines those he loves and he punishes each one he accepts as his child as you endure this divine discipline remember that god is treating you as his children whatever whoever heard of a child who is never disciplined by its father the lord disciplines us in love not only does he discipline us but he rescues the fallen sheep we mention that amen earlier the psalmist spoke about the lord having a rod and a staff and we mentioned how the shepherd would use that stuff to raise the fall and then say matthew chapter 12 verses 11 to 12 the first part of verse 12 the bible says he and he said unto them what man shall there be among you that shall have one sheep and if it falls into a pit even on the sabbath day will he not lay hold on it and lift it out how much then is a man better than a sheep if the shepherd will take up a sheep out of a hole we are the son of god why will not the lord lift us out of the pit the lord rescues the fourth the lord rescues the fallen finally got too close the lord as our good shepherd protects us the lord as our good shepherd protects us firstly he is with us in the back pastor how do you know that the lord is with us in the battle i'm going to psalm 23 and we're closing with psalm 23 here are the services yeah though i walk through the valley of the shadow of death i will fear no evil why because thou art with me thy rod and thy staff now comfort me we have the assurance that the good shepherd is in the battle with us and he has his rod to strike at the enemy of the sheep therefore we are protected by the good shepherd because guess what he is with us children of god you are not alone man and woman of god you are not alone god is with you the lord is with you to fight your battles the lord is with you with israel to strike at your enemies the lord is with you to protect you against every evil plot of the enemy the lord is with us in the battle praise god the lord is with us in the battle the lord is with us in the battle the lord refreshes us in the battle the lord i wanted to make a change on this life i mean the lord blesses us in the battle psalm 23 5 that will prepare us that table before me in the presence of mine enemies can you imagine that the lord blesses us in the battle did you say that the lord blesses us after the battle but even in the battle the lord blesses us by in the universe says the lord prepares a terrible form in the presence of our enemies even when our enemies are are seeking to strike at us god says listen i'm gonna still bless you even in the battle and that's why people don't understand why you are not at war 21 why you are not mad and eaten out of the rubbish bin that they have been attacking your left right and center and they expect that you would have been fooled up in a fetal position and lose your mind but every time the enemy attacks you the spirit of god lifts up a standard and god begins to bless you even in the midst of your enemy and god begins to exalt you and lift you up my god and the more they thought that they were pushing you down it's the more god exalted because he blesses us in the battle he blesses us in the in the midst of the battle and finally not only does he bless us but he refreshes us in the battle because the bible says he anoints my head with oil my cop run it over oil in the scripture as representative of the holy spirit that refreshes us the refreshing of the lord my god almighty not only does he blesses us in the battle but he refreshes us he pours in the oil and the wine that revives our soul and refreshes our spirit even in the midst of the battle that's how good the shepherd is my god almighty that's why the word of god says wait on the lord and be of good courage and he shall strengthen or refresh thy heart the prophet isaiah says they that wait upon the lord shall be refreshed they shall renew their strength they shall mount up with ring wings like an eagle they shall run and not be weary they shall walk and not fit aren't you glad tonight that you serve a good shepherd that is with us in the battle for the watch with me a god that blesses us even in the midst of the battle though he pierced that table before me in the presence of my enemy a god that refreshes us in the battle when we get weak he pours in oil and wine and anoints our head with oil and that oil that runs over that refreshes and revives us aren't you glad tonight that jesus christ is your all in all that jesus christ is our good shepherd that provides for us a good shepherd that protects us a good
