way back in there it does not get any more fun than this right after switching to the spinner bait nico saving the day here barely freaking hooked what's happening fusion friends welcome to another episode today i've got a fun video a video that i actually did last year and i had a lot of people say they really liked it and for some people it stirred up some heated discussions which i like yes we'll be talking about the best and worst lures of 2020. this is solely based on lures that i've actually used purchased actually taken out none of this bs of reviewing and saying i don't like something that i've never used none of that it's all things i've fished with so today i'm going to talk about the lures that worked well for me the colors kind of wear and how i used them conversely we're going to talk about the lures that well just didn't live up to expectation for me so enough you happen let's take a look at some finesse jigs okay you've definitely heard me talk about these guys on the channel before those are the uh the war eagle heavy finesse jigs three eighths ounce randizzle got me turned on to those they're great little jigs uh you can see the line tie here is horizontal it goes this way so you can see the circle um but a shorter compact jig you can see the front uh the head of it's already trimmed up there's a shorter skirt shorter profile that's what i'm talking about with finesse jigs um and generally they're gonna have a ball head like you can see they're a round head that's what you're usually going to find now a new jig that i actually got was this guy right here the beast coast hybrid hustler jig what makes this unique is it's trimmed down the skirt is very short trimmed down you can see it's got the little fluffy deals there it's got a little bit different head this did come through brush pretty well but again remember it's got a light brush guard on it so it's not made for every wood and such but i do like the turned up nose but it's got this hair stuff along with this flashabou stuff you can see kind of flashing in the light uh as well as the skirt so it's got a lot of stuff going on with it the hair in the water just looks really natural really cool um i got a couple one was just under four and like a three something on that one day um it really made it for me that finesse jig real subtle presentation the fish loved it another one that i used earlier this year that i really liked uh from dirty jigs is the luke clawson finesse jig 5 16 ounce has become my favorite jig size again this has that ball head you can see the line ties kind of recessed down into the head and that helps protect your knot and that line tie up in there when you're dragging it you know through coarse rock even over larger rock as small as you can get away with for a finesse jig the less likely you are to get hung up when you're fishing that big chunk rock so colors black and blue as you can kind of see when i was going through is one of my favorites and as we're kind of going through i'm going to show you some of the trailers as well these are the reaction innovation smallie beavers so a little smaller three and a half inch trailer probably my favorite all-around trailer there's not a lot of action on it which i like it's real real subtle when you're trying to go finesse so it's not a big kicky thing not a bunch of crazy flappy deals love those any sort of black and blue they've got a few different ones blank check hematoma a number of those to check out and then of course something with a green pumpkin either like a green pumpkin chartreuse belly which would be like your summer craw or i actually like the green pumpkin with orange on it quite a bit and one that i really like they're hard to find now but this uh smallie beaver and magic craw red swirl it's got a few different colors going on and it's got like a watermelon green pumpkin with red flake and then this kind of bluish red in the water when the sun hits it it's got a really cool almost laminated kind of vibrant look to it now talking about a jig that did not work well and it's kind of funny because every time i've bought these i've had the same issue and i only bring it up because i've had a few people tell me they had this issue which to me is a bell ring and that's the booyah finance jig now looking at it you'd say well that looks just like the warrior what's the deal well the number one difference is i don't like that the line tie goes this way i don't like that i feel like it wants to wobble more when you come over stuff and the big problem is look right above behind the barb right there it's rusted every single one of these that i've bought and i've bought multiple over the years they've had rusted hooks i don't know if it's a hook deal a storage deal but i've had other people tell me the same deal rusty hooks are no bueno on brand new jigs so the booyah finance not a fan i like booyah stuff love their frogs i don't know what it is about these but they they really need to fix that okay moving on let's talk about some spinner baits uh one of the number one producers for me this year was that guy right there the nichols pulsator white and chartreuse all white i threw a few different colors this was one i had some good luck on even the bluegill color oh i did grab that one the bluegill color i was throwing post spawn if you don't throw a bluegill colored uh spinnerbait post spawn you're missing out great throw otherwise like a white and silver i had some good luck on that one the cool thing about nickels is they do have some blades that they dip in like a glitter they have painted blades they've got a whole bunch of different types and the nickels pulsator is actually a pretty small spinnerbait i wouldn't say it's super finesse but it's it's pretty small it's pretty compact um and with these usually they don't have a soft plastic keeper a lot of the time i don't even fish a soft plastic on it i don't have any here but a lot of the other spinner baits are really big the blades on them are super big the blades stick way out past the actual skirt material you can see this is a small actually it is more of a finesse spinner bait so it's one i've had a lot of luck on um if i do throw a soft plastic on like a real tiny keitech something like that i'm really not looking for the accents just to kind of give it a little bit of bulk in there i like to pop my spinner bait when i bring it through you know brush laying down trees and stuff pop it and it makes that skirt flare and that tail back there is giving it just a little bit of action as well it's very subtle nothing big if you get a real big um soft plastic on here a lot of times it will overpower your spinner bait so the nickels pulsator okay the second one that i actually had sitting right here you've seen me throw these a lot it's a sure sign when you see that shiny chrome silverish goldish head the war eagles love these war eagles got a few different kinds they have the finesse they've got a bunch of different ones but just a little bit different look to it like i said usually unpainted head is what you're going to find on them kind of that shiny head just a little bit bigger profile i like these because you can find some of them where they have that long skirt on it too so those i don't even run a soft plastic trailer on because again on the war eagles they don't have a big soft plastic keeper on it you just kind of got the hook and you roll that way so the war eagle's been one that i've thrown a lot um it's a consistent lure for me some people say the the wire's a little bit soft on it but i just bend it back um the war eagle or the nickels pulsator you cannot go wrong with either one of those in like a white or a white and chartreuse great for mimicking bait fish let's jump over to a couple soft plastics number one a rig that i wanted to put more time in with this year and i did i'm gonna had a lot of luck throwing it on this right here this is the missile baits quiver six and a half inch and that's the nico rig now the nikko rig is really nothing more than a kind of an offset wacky rig so you know with your wacky rig you would have your o-ring in the dead middle dead center of the bait with the nico rig it's moved down towards the nose of it i'd say kind of the first third of the bait you've got some sort of weight in the nose of it i like to use a an o-ring and then put the hook up through the bottom of that so you can see instead of the hook sitting perpendicular to the lure it's parallel to the lure and you just bounce this across the bottom this quiver worked amazing when you see this in the water it's a very cool different presentation almost like a wacky rig mixed with the shaky head and that's what you get when it falls it falls straight nose down but when you pop it you get that wacky rig side to side pop and then it falls straight down you can drag it lightly hop it kind of bounce it i had luck that way just a cool unique bait but um i used both of these this is the smaller one i think it's a four and a half inch um and then the larger six and a half inch was actually my favorite now the color that i loved is super bug and this matches the stamp in the uh the reaction innovation stuff it's got this black and blue on top and then like a green pumpkin with a green greenish bluish kind of flake through it but that dark top that green pumpkin belly works amazing around here love that color so the nico rig another way to go finesse uh you know it's different than a ned rig a little bit different looking than a shaky head it kind of puts a few different baits together so if you haven't tried the ned rig that was new to me this year i put a lot of time in with it and that exact setup right there did work that's what i was throwing it on you know what maybe i should do the best and worst gear of 2020 maybe that'll be one coming up comment below let me know if you'd like to see that okay sticking with soft plastics i'm probably gonna get some heat on this one but that's okay one that i i didn't really have a lot of luck with and i wasn't real impressed with that's this champ crop jordan lee design he's a stud dude can could outfish me any day the thing with these was it was kind of hard for me to find a blaze for it i got them thinking they would be small enough that you could put on a like a ned rig unless you've got kind of like a beefed up ned rig i felt like they were a little bit big for that um you can certainly throw it randizzle through them i think he caught some fish on it i threw him i didn't have the greatest luck the thing was there's not a lot of action i think maybe it would look better as like a jig trailer or something but they say when they say texas rig it with like an ewg i was really thinking ned rigg but it doesn't have any crazy action on it it's not like it's super soft and supple the claws don't float up it was just something i was kind of in because looking at it like this color here looks sweet i thought i was going to catch some on this color this green and gold didn't get any catches not any bites i don't even think i got on these so i was just a little underwhelmed with it you know it's it's like if i wanted something with no action i could go with a beaver bait if i wanted like a cross dial you know there's so many different ones out there with kicky flappy claws with the claws that float you know they have little twirly appendage deals on the side i felt like it was just hard to find a place i don't know if you have better luck than me comment below and let me know what you did it's got that power bait smell i've got a lot of confidence in that it's a stinky stinky smell but it works but i don't know the three and a half inch champ craw just uh didn't really perform for me all right now one that i was on the edge about this was one that i picked up i had a lot of people talk about this one saying they wanted to see more that's the man's springer worm now inside here there's actually a spring i don't know if you can really see it that well there you go there's a spring inside here through the whole thing this is meant to wacky rig and when you throw it it's kind of a heavy bait so it falls like a weighted wacky rig it's not a real slow flutter it's a pretty quick flutter down like a weighted wacky rig which is nice because you can cover water the thing i didn't like was after you used it for a while that's what the old guy looks like looks like an old minnow that you've thrown out about 1700 times and expecting it to still catch fish it still looked alright i still caught fish with it even all tore up but i noticed the soft plastic was trying to slide down i had to push it back up on the spring there and the other thing was you can't just put the hook through one of these little coils i had some people telling me that just put it through one coil the problem is it starts to get bent out and you lose the lure so i had to put it through two of the coils and the problem was fishing it was when your hook pushes up through it slides up on your line you know like a wacky rig does it was hard for me to get it over the hook eye and when i was doing that i was kind of scraping my line putting it through so i was using eight pound fluorocarbon leader and i was scared i was gonna snap off so i was having to cut it off re-tie would i buy them again i don't know they were kind of expensive and if you lose one i think for like a four pack it was like seven something so but i mean that's held up that held up to two full days of fishing probably a dozen so fish it worked i don't know just kind of on the fence about it the man's springer worm okay enough of this other stuff let's talk about my favorite lure in the world to throw and that is a soft hollow-bodied frog this happens to be the mega bass big gabo i threw this black and yellow chartreuse back i forget what they call this one but this is the one i caught all the fish on multiple days i threw this walk super easy it's got this mouth design that they call a catamaran mouth it's supposed to like spit and pop it does that effortlessly did i just say effortlessly pops really well and i noticed when you can make that commotion that little pop pop pop and leave it fish destroy it i had a ton of luck on this i didn't want to like it because they're expensive i'm not gonna lie i think it's like 15 bucks for one frog which is is silly and they shouldn't cost that much but it worked the only thing i noticed was i was skipping this under trees for a whole day and it started sliding down here after a while so it looked like it was like hot glued on there it did start to take on a little bit of water there are some holes in the side of it the head's all scraped up there's some cracks and cuts in it but i mean i put this thing through the ring or used it a ton it worked well it's a little bit bigger frog so if you have trouble throwing a smaller like this happens to be the reaction innovation swamp donkey i'm going to talk about that but a little bit bigger wider body frog so i know some people that say you know throwing a smaller frog i kind of have troubles give that guy a try if you've got the extra money i know people are going to say i don't have that much money to spend i get it like i said it shouldn't cost that much but it does work hooks are ultra sharp i like that they have a longer um hook part up here to actually hook up onto them one thing about the booyah pad crasher i love that frog um it's inexpensive it does catch fish but like if you look at the popping version of it it's got a very short little spot here to actually hook the fish so i like that this has such a long hook up here now if you're looking for something a little bit more affordable i also had really good luck on these the reaction innovations swamp donkeys these are pretty cool because they're a frog that walks really well it looks very similar to like the tekkel sprinker design kind of that pointy nose a little bit longer kind of skinnier frog so it walks back and forth really well i was just kind of an all-around do it well easy frog this is the one i was throwing with my mat in the boat and i don't know how long we took half hour 45 minutes trying to get this undone from a log but i'm like dude i can't lose it i caught i don't know how many fish on it that day probably close to 20 but i mean that frog was just chewed up tore up so much fun reaction innovation swamp donkey i think it's like a seven dollar frog um good all around they've got a few different colors but check that one out if you're looking for something a little bit more affordable that kind of does it all pretty well probably the best all-around frog that i used this year was this guy this is the river to see bully wall i've had people telling me for a long time that i need to check these out um they come in two sizes i didn't really like the smaller size very much i felt like the body was just a little bit stiffer i did throw out and catch some fish on it but this is the dude that i really put to work um i mean he's got look at that from catching fish he's got a whole side of him blown out and ripped out hooks are all knot up up here his head's not up his eyes are all ripped off caught a ton of fish on that guy a ton of confidence in it what makes this guy kind of unique is you can see here the the front design it's got like almost this keel like v-shaped belly walked super easy but i noticed if you popped it quick you could get it to almost spit pretty much like a popping nose or a popping frog worked really well it's a little bit heavier frog so again for people that might have trouble casting a smaller frog it's good all around it's not super huge but it's not one of those little tiny finesse frogs to me just did great in you know pretty much any environment the hooks are pointed up but you can see how they have the body shaped they're not actually exposed so i can run my fingers on it like this but with just a little bit of pressure those hooks are already pointed up there you can see they're not flat on the back so a ton of good luck with that guy black was my favorite color out of this one i did get like a white one and i think like a like a blue gillish color but black this year for me i was throwing almost all black most of the time and it was the biggest producer by far um loved it so there we go the river to see bully wah two one that i was kind of on the fence about this is that new scum frog uh the launch frog hookup ratio on it was awesome casts extremely well uh their design's a little bit different because you can see there's a big open hole in the butt of it there and you're thinking well hell this thing isn't going to float but the weight is clear back here so it kind of sits head up so it's one of those frogs it's really easy to kind of pop the head down and do like a chugging it i guess maybe is the right word um really easy frog to do that with it would walk as long as you'd put slack in the line but the thing i didn't like was the hooks are pretty much right here up at the top so when i was throwing this around reeds and such it definitely was not as weedless as some of the other frogs however if you're fishing this along the edges of stuff and you know more open water type scenarios the hookup ratio on this was great like i said those hooks which a lot of guys will do with their frogs bend those hooks up so you can see how they're pointed up there a lot of guys will do that to get a better hookup ratio so they've already pretty much done that on these for you um that black and yellow was my number one producer pike destroyed this thing again that's one where it's got a whole big huge hole inside of it doesn't float anymore but worked well just kind of be wary if you're throwing it in and around cover it might not be as weedless as some other frogs okay let's jump over and talk about some treble hook lures now number one that i was really disappointed in uh lunker hunt this is their lip was called the reactor i threw two of these a yellow one and then one that was like a bait fish color colors on them looked good i thought they were gonna be good they didn't vibrate now i don't know if this is exactly how they made it they said it's supposed to have a tight wobble but as you can see on that picture that looks like a vibrating wobble to me when i would pull these through there was basically no emotion to it if i would rip it really hard i could feel a little vibration but not like a red-eye shad or a even like a cotton cordel like a spot which are extremely cheap these didn't do that so i was trying to work them on the bottom more i didn't know if that's how they meant for it to be used it doesn't say anything about that but i was trying to work it on the bottom and rip it up more i didn't have any luck i ended up snagging the two but i don't know i was pretty let down with those it didn't vibrate comment below and let me know if you had better luck let's talk about a jerkbait that i really liked sixth sense their jerkbait called the provoke 106x so that's 106 millimeter the size of the jerkbait this guy i had a ton of luck with earlier in the year there was a day at one of my local lakes it was like every other cast there for a while i think i kept caught like 35 fish that day but it happened to be on that color right there their 4k shad which is like a white with a blue into a golden back hooks on them are really sharp that's one thing i like about the sixth sense stuff you don't have to change out the hardware and on a jerk bait that is crucial because if you start messing with the hook sizes and changing size and weight you're gonna impact how that jerk bait either floats or sinks or like they're supposed to like this suspend so you've got to be very careful that so getting a jerkbait that suspends like this does which means as you pop it through the water and stop it literally will stop right there on a dime and that's what you want when that that water water's cold i was using this earlier in the spring and the fish the bass were just hammering that guy so uh the the sixth sense provoke i had a lot of luck with it like i said good sharp they look like kvd triple grips um kind of that short shank ewg and then the other thing that i like is all of theirs come with that oval line tie i like that because as opposed to like a round uh split ring you don't get your line where it can get caught up in it and get under the ring and actually chew with the line and break it but i do like that so all around good jerk bait good action caught fish for me the sixth sense provoke sticking with the treble hook lures one of my all-time favorite top water walking lures um i gotta put in some time with the hard knock which is like a one knocker this is the kvd sexy dog now i had a ton of luck with this guy and you can see this dude is absolutely chewed up that used to be all like white chrome on the bottom not anymore it's all chewed off sides are all rashed up i mean that is a lure that has put in a work for me but the kvd sexy dog that's what you're looking at here a little bit larger pencil bait for four and a half inches maybe a little bit bigger guy i like it because it's got the three hooks on it you all know with top water the fish come up and swipe at them and slap at it a lot so if i can throw one with the three hooks on it even better now the other like the uh head and super spook junior which is kind of that middle size that's probably my other all-around favorite i had some luck with that earlier in the year one that i actually painted but um this guy this guy was the one of the year for me multiple days where that was the top performer like i said i got to use some of the hard knocks i caught a couple fish on these but definitely a distinct sound it's like one big ball in there as opposed to like a big ball and a bunch of bbs but if you're looking for a reliable super easy top water to walk the kvd sexy dog okay another top water that i used this year and liked was the sixth sense catwalk thing that was kind of cool about this was it's got like a v-shaped belly so you can see there almost like a boat it's got that keel that kind of angles down to a v um i liked this it was a cool design i thought it was just a little bit different than the kvd sexy dog um walks just a little bit differently i noticed with this you may have to make sure you've got extra slack sometimes like with the the sexy dog you can kind of get away with a relaxed kind of tight walk to it or tight line i noticed with this one if you tried to do that it would just shoot forward so you really have to make sure you have that slack to get it to cut back and forth but the cuts on it i noticed it would almost glide out more so have good luck with that i was using the bone color sensory shad i actually didn't even throw that when it's still in the box but um this bone this white bone always a good choice if you're looking for a top water walking color a white bone or like a chrome like this one for me they call it sexy chrome it's like a sexy shad but just all chromified either one of those is a good choice to go to on top water lures okay a top water that i didn't like this is the river to sea lane changer this is one that i don't know if chris lane helped design it but um it reminds me of the smithwick devil horse which is where i never really had luck with i didn't put a bunch of time in with it and maybe that's kind of my bad on this guy i tried it a few times and to me it's like one of those niche deals where you have to find just like the right deal like a specific line of grass you're coming over i know guys like these because you can put it over a spot and just rip up a ton of of action it's a bait you pull and these little propellers here kind of pulse and give like so it's a lot of motion um the thing i didn't like is if you start to get like a ripple on the water i felt it was just hard to i don't know to get that action that you want so i don't know maybe that's just due to me not having a ton of confidence in this style of lure but i felt like it was just a like a specific time or a specific spot where this would come into play whereas like a walking bait you can cover you know larger feeding points i can cover big long spots where you know there might be some a submerged raw comp or grass lines i just feel like it's more efficient compared to this or like even a whopper plopper so i don't know maybe that's just me but it was one that i personally didn't have a bunch of luck with okay last one on the list this is one i was kind of half and half on this is the berkeley cane walker the 125 size so what i liked about it is i think it was the lucky craft gun fish is what this essentially looks like that's the only one of these that i've ever used i had a couple but what i like about this is it's your pencil bait a walking style bait but it's got a cup mouth so for those times those times where there's a little bit more chop on the water instead of going directly to a buzzbait something like this works nice because it's loud very loud rattle to it a bunch of you know different balls in there and it's got that cuff mouth so this is not only spitting but it's loud it's a larger longer profile it's got the feathered treble it's got a lot going on with it so when you've got ripple uh or you've got fish you know that are really aggressive keying in on larger bait it's just a different look compared to like your regular walking lure a little bit louder a little bit more annoying another thing i didn't like was i barely hit this on a rock and if you can see back here it actually cracked it it cracked that and broke it open i was able to push it closed still worked for me but the fact that it barely hit a rock and cracked i actually had a couple other people tell me that they completely blew theirs up they tried them and completely blew it up i don't know if they hit like a dock post or whatever it was but they said they completely shattered theirs now again i know that could happen to any lure you know you bang like a a crankbait on the top of the water i broke you know kvd 1.5s and stuff doing that that's why i never bang a treble hook lure on the water especially like with a bill you can break those but i don't know i barely hit it and it broke so maybe again that was just me it hit it just right but i don't know i like the action of it i've got a few of these i'm definitely still going to throw them they work well they're sharp that's the other thing they do come with those berkeley fusion hooks on them so just be careful if you're throwing it around stuff you could shatter it out but uh it works well good sound and it did catch a number of fish all right fish and friends that's gonna do it for me tonight comment below and let me know if there was a lure that really stood out for you this year you had a bunch of luck on it you feel like people would benefit from knowing about it or if there was a lure that you tried it just didn't live up to expectation wasn't the greatest comment below and let me know i like having these open discussions it's good to share stuff back and forth also let me know if you'd like to see me do a best and worst gear of 2020 you know rods reels line that kind of stuff i would be happy to do that and i i think it could benefit some folks so comment below and let me know if you'd like to see that tonight's subscribe fishing friend is alvin
