what's happening fishing friends welcome to another episode summer weather is here it's been like in the 90s the past few days and man you can tell the fishing has uh definitely been summer-like so i figured now is a great time to talk about my top five summer bass fishing lures and i'm gonna go over everything i'm gonna show you the the baits and give you some ideas of what i use i'm gonna go over the combos and even a tip for fishing each one of these lures to hopefully help you out when you're out on the water next time so without further ado i have to start out with my favorite the topwater hollow body frog if you've been around my channel any amount of time you know i am addicted to frog fishing you know with those warmer temps a lot of the places you're gonna have vegetation growing up the water starts to clear up a little bit you start to get the algae and stuff that is a perfect time and sometimes out of necessity just because the places you were fishing in the spring you can't even fish them now because there's so much grass and stuff it becomes like the deal you have to use something like this just to be able to get in there but besides that it's honestly my favorite way to catch bass it's just those those blow ups it sounds like somebody throws a a bowling ball in there oh i live for it so what are some of the frogs this year i have been using uh the spro frog a lot spro is actually what i started throwing first off when i started picking up some frogs this and booyah i've got a buoy on here too but uh the spro and like that leopard frog looking deal and then the booyah frogs this guy is all sorts of tore up um that's all smokey that's like a secret color that's that's an old old frog right there but old smokey's a good one if i had just one color to choose it would be all black i mean that has been my biggest producer for the past few years a straight black frog otherwise an all white frog this is the sixth sense vega frog i am really liking their frog it's kind of a longer profile you can see here compared to like the pad crasher a longer body it walks really well but it's got kind of that cupped mouth you kind of see it there and it spits really easy big fan of that one but all black is my favorite all white is great if you've got a bass that are feeding on white bait fish whether that's you know wiper crappie coarse shad a big during shad spawn that color and then also going over to something with some chartreuse on it if you're fishing around bluegill so that could even be like a more of a green pumpkin with chartreuse on it something like that to imitate bluegill those are really the three colors that i use but again if i could just choose one it would be all black so like i said the brands the booyah pad crash was awesome this is the mega bass big gabo i didn't want to like that one because it was so expensive but walks really well great hookup ratio and it's got this kind of cup mouth they call it their catamaran mouth style awesome when you you walk it back and forth it's got this little spit and then the reaction innovation swamp donkey also another good little frog there when it comes to the combo i like a seven foot two to a seven foot five heavy power fast action rod but a tip that's got just a little bit more bend in it is what i like so this happens to be the okuma serrano that's my frog rod for the year so far i am really liking that you don't have to go super expensive for your frog ride that's the thing this is like 100 rod you can get on sale you know 80 bucks but you don't have to go super expensive because you're gonna see those blow-ups right you're running braid i always run at least 50 pound braids 65 is my go-to just because when you get in all that thick stuff i'd rather be safe than sorry i've broke 40 pound i even had a bad experience with some 50 pound recently so a 7-speed reel this is the uh okuma komodo the 200 size you want to make sure you've got a reel with a little bit more uh line capacity because going with that 65 pound braid it's a little bit bigger diameter if you if you go with a reel that's got like a real shallow spool you might be you know getting to the end of the cast and not getting anywhere close to where you're aiming because you can't get out there far enough so keep that in mind now a tip for frog fishing is i see a lot of people think that you need slop right you need the the thick algae and all that you don't need that you can throw a frog under overhangs and walk it out of there you can throw it uh you know obviously around sparse lily pads around grass lines you can walk it next to lay down logs and timber anywhere you would normally work like a popper or a walking bait you can still use the frog so don't think that you know i can't frog in my leg because i don't have a bunch of algae and scum you don't need that and don't be afraid to make it walk back and forth and make it spin that's been my thing i think it makes a difference there's a few frogs that do that oh and did i talk about the river to see bowie wall uh that was one of my favorites from last year i'm sorry i forgot to say that but um it spits back and forth real well so that's something i kind of look for on my frogs but don't go super expensive on the rod spend more money on the reel and get a reel that at least has an aluminum frame because truly frog fishing is one of the toughest things you can do to your uh reels no doubt all right lure number two this is actually a rig we're talking about the wacky rig now the wacky rig is something that i think a lot of people overlook because you know they think like super light line they're like well i can't throw it you know in my area for me a wacky rig i mean there's a number of things you can throw you can throw just like your regular stick bait you know like a yamamoto stick bait this is the big bite baits what do they call it trick stick you know your five inch regular stick bait type deal one of my favorite all times the reaction innovations pocket rocket i actually like the smaller size the four and a half um this bigger five and a half i like texas rig but the smaller version of this is killer on a wacky rig my favorite wacky rig this year without a doubt has been the missile baits 48 one i had never used uh until this year and i've caught a bunch of good fish i've actually got a couple videos coming up with this i caught a really good sized fish on it but really like that uh the 48 in the super bug and i've been using the watermelon red flake which usually i'm not a fan of that color but both have worked really well another one i've been testing out this year is the sixth sense clout uh also a cool different looking stickmate it's got like this diamond-ish pattern on it i don't know how well you can see it there but green pumpkin would be my all-around favorite if you could only pick up one color of any of these i would go green pumpkin for sure next is like a black and blue or some sort of dark color if you've got kind of stained water because when you're throwing it in there and it's just you know slowly floating down and wiggling that's the whole big deal with the wacky rig is do nothing deal they're just seeing that silhouette so green pumpkins my all-time favorite though now the thing i like about the wacky rig and if you're wondering what that what i'm talking about wacky rig wacky rig just means you're putting the hook in the middle over here i'd have the hook in the middle of it usually i run a couple o-rings to save my uh my lure and it falls just like this right so it's shimmying on the way down it's just like shaking on the way down and that just drives fish crazy and in the summer it's so nice because you can flip this around you know lay down wood once you've got that vegetation coming up and you've got good hard vegetation lines you can throw it right on the outside of that or you know if you're paralleling it parallel it right next to that and pop it and it's such an easy rig to fish you throw it out pop it a couple times and let it fall flutter down just don't touch it pop it a couple times let it fall that's all you're doing and it drives fish nuts now one other thing i will bring up is the hook i've i've tested a lot of hooks i've talked to different people about this and i actually don't like the wacky hooks like the weedless wacky hooks i feel like the hookup ratio is just not as good as something like this this is what they call like a nico hook what do they call theirs they call theirs the wacky niko hook but it's essentially just like a j hook this is the mustad version of it this is what i first started using was the bmc newco hook and you can see it's just a j style hook just a simple j style there and they even show you on the back for doing the nikko rig it's the same thing with the wacky you're just putting in the middle there the hook-up ratio on these is awesome so they've got you know like weedless versions like this that have like fluorocarbon some of them will have like a thin wire but i'm just not a huge fan of the little circle wacky hooks to have the wire that like hooks under it when it comes to the combo i like a 3000 size reel this is the new okuma itx i am really digging that reel 100 reel so far it has been great for me um i go 15 pound fluorocarbon this is the p-line tcb braid nice thin braid it's awesome because you can get a great cast with it you've got that sensitivity of the braid but i run a liter so anywhere from eight to twelve pound leader is what i usually put on there tin is like my all-around go-to so if you're just picking one i'd go 15 pound braid to a 10 pound fluorocarbon leader for the rod i like which way it is this a seven foot medium power fast action rod this is actually a shaky head rod um but this is a good do-it-all this is actually the okuma uh tournament concept but any sort of medium power fast action rod you know if you're going to spend more money on a rod a finesse rod like this where you're trying to feel those real light bites is a good way to spend your money but you're going braid to a leader so you're going to get that sensitivity so even if you don't have you know a super expensive rod that braid will help you out a ton now the one tip i'll give you for the wacky rig is don't overwork it so the the power of the wacky rig is throwing that out being as accurate as you can trying to get it as close to that tree so for example if there's a tree here and i'm out here i throw to it let that fall on slack line all the way down straight next to that tree like this if you throw it and you right away engage your bale that lure is going to swing out so remember that throw it on slack line let it fall on slackline and watch your line on the way down watch your braid because as you throw that out there and you're letting it fall a lot of times i'll have my bail open like this and it's just falling and i'll see my line go jump real quick or start to move to the side that's when i can you know flip my bail over and start reeling down on that fish because i know a fish is taking it but if i'm not watching my line if i just throw it out there and i'm just you know messing around waiting there's a good chance that fish will grab it you don't even feel it a lot of the times on a wacky rig they just kind of come up and suck it in so watch your line make sure it's falling on slack line and don't overwork it let it fall slack let it wiggle just do nothing as the summer temps continue to rise the bass's metabolism goes up as well so they're needing to eat more they're going to be more active in the morning and at night they want to feed they need to put that on they can't keep on the weight as much because their metabolism metabolism is higher but they're going to be a lot more active during those times so a bladed jig is a great way to attack that stained water uh it works good in grass it's kind of stand-up be grass not the real mossy stuff that gets stuck in it but it comes through kind of the straight stick type grass really well and it appeals to multiple senses right you've got whatever trailer on here doing work you've got the skirt flaring you've got this blade vibrating bringing bass in it's just a great way to draw bass in now when it comes to the actual jig or the chatterbait my favorite all-around is the chatterbait custom this is a tackle warehouse exclusive and like always i will link everything down below you can use the links that goes right exactly to everything i'm talking about so if you want to pick them up hopefully it makes it easier for you but the chatterbait custom i like the b height delight color here which is like a green pumpkin with a little bit of white and chartreuse love that color um then of course the bluegill color which is your you know typical bluegills with the green pumpkin orange a little bit of blue and a gold blade on it uh i also like just a straight green pumpkin it's hard to go wrong with that uh or some form of black like either a black and red or a black and blue this is the strike king thunder cricket something dark in that really dirty water and then for third color would be like some sort of white so if you know your fish are primarily feeding on shad or crappie or whatever it is white does great as well now when it comes to the trailers ton of different options out there for me a paddle tail has always been one of my favorites the reaction innovations little dipper or skinny dipper depending if you want a larger or smaller profile love their swim bait works great the uh gary yamamoto zacco that's what i have on there it's a little bit different you can see it has this segmented tail so it works really well with the vibrating jig it's not fighting it you don't want a trailer on here that's too big that's going to fight the action of the chatterbait because it's going to chatter back and forth so you want something that works well with it you can go with something finesse like a zoom fluke or this is the sixth sense flush bite it down just a little bit and have that tail sticking off the back and it's literally just that fluke tail back there vibrating um so those are some of my top picks let's see anything else now it comes to the actual brands like i said i actually really like the the strike king thunder cricket it's a little less vibration so it's a little bit more subtle of course the z-man jackhammer is all the rage 18 bucks it is extremely reliable i mean as soon as you start cranking it it's vibrating that can be the issue with some of the less expensive vibrating jigs you throw them out there and you have to give it like a hard pull or it takes a minute for it to actually start vibrating um that's why i like the custom i think the custom is the best bang for your buck but there's like the chatterbait elite the chatterbait i don't know how many you know just the original um try them out for yourself those are some of my picks okay when it comes to my chatterbait combo i still personally like a medium heavy fast action rod this is a tfo temple fork rod love their stuff this is the bassily rod feels great and their rods are a little bit softer which is something i want to talk about there are some guys that will talk about you want a moderate fast rod or rod that's got more bend in it so when you throw this out there and you're reeling it in that fish actually grabs it has it in its mouth and starts to go a little bit loads up that rod before you swing into it you know if you feel that fish right away with the moving bait the argument is you're pulling that bait out of the fish's mouth so i personally still just go with a medium-heavy fast rod i would say but it's it's leaning more toward that moderate fast like a soft uh rod that has more bend in it than the normal like extra fast where like just the tip of the rod bends something that loads up a little bit more i usually run 17 pound fluorocarbon on my chatterbait setup it's gonna depend on what you're around if you're around a lot of wooden stuff or you know if you're somebody down in florida those guys are running like a heavy power rod with 50 65 pound braid right it depends on what you're around but for me 17-pound fluorocarbon um this is the p-line tactical does cost a little bit more but it's so soft like you know some of the fluorocarbons feel like wire um get yourself a good fluorocarbon that's a little bit softer something that you can cast well that you know doesn't become a coiled up mess and then for real i like a seven speed reel this is that new dial with zillion uh been testing this out this combo feels amazing as it should you know this is a more expensive combo but doesn't mean you have to go super expensive um i've used everything from you know the hundred dollar lose xfinity for my chatterbaits to you know something like this so use what you've got stay within your budget but that's where i go when it comes to the combo now one tip for fishing the chatterbait and i know this is gonna seem kind of counterintuitive is to hit stuff bang into stuff now chatter baits don't play well with wood so unless you've got some sort of actually the super k clacking that i was using from them this is a weedless chatterbait or bladed jig and it connects directly to the head and it actually did really well around wood i was surprised picasso has uh one that i was using that worked well like a weedless vibrating jig style i think even z-man has some i don't know if i've used those but be careful around wood uh when you're around grass and such if you're fishing above a grass line so let's say the water is you know five foot deep and the vegetation goes up to like three feet here's the water when i'm bringing it through that vegetation i'm letting it kind of get stuck in it then popping it out so it's kind of almost going like a yo-yo and when that gets stuck in some grass or whatever you yank it out of there a lot of times that's what makes that fish really react you know it's like bait trying to get away real quick and they'll nail it uh you know as a bank angler for a long time i'd fish safe so i'd fish you know way above the grass or way away from it so i didn't get snagged or way away from that wood and you just miss so many bites i mean hitting stuff knocking into stuff making that fish react is huge so i know i've i've talked about it before but do stuff out of the normal get close to that stuff yes you're gonna lose lures that's part of the game but okay lure number four again this isn't actually a lure it's a rig but it's so important for summer fishing for me i i can't not talk about it it is the old texas rig a texas rigged soft plastic with some sort of weight over the years this rig has caught me more fish than anything for sure a texas rig whether i was throwing a big worm a creature bait a craw i know for sure that the texas rig has caught me the most fish i do a lot of bank fishing and when you're flipping and pitching wood next to frog fishing i love you know what's my saying fine wood pitch to wood next to frog fishing throwing around shallow wood and brush you know dock pilings whatever it is is my second favorite way to fish and a texas rig is such a good way to attack that because as a bank angler once you get this hook text posed and all that means is i'm taking this hook point here and i'm burying it into the soft plastic like that so it is nice and weedless as a bank angler that's huge because i can throw it around you know grass i can throw it around wood and not worry about getting snagged and hung up all the time you know as opposed to being a boat you can drive over to lure and get pretty much anything out the other thing is this is just so dang versatile i mean you can swim you know swim a texas rig worm you can flip and pitch it you can skip this under uh you know brush and wood fishing gets slow you can drag this you don't have to worry about it getting caught in all the wood and stuff on the bottom you can just do so much with the texas rig okay now when it comes to some of the texas rig soft plastics a big worm like this this is the x-zone or they call it the blitzworm yeah 11-inch blitz worm black and blue a dark color like this in the summer when you've got stained water is awesome those big worms present a large meal to that fish they're more apt to go after a big meal like this i think than something real tiny coming in because they don't want to expend a bunch of energy throw a big worm they do awesome in the summer next would be some sort of craw that's got like a flap or a kick to it so of course the rage craws are amazing they've got a real quick kicky deal to it or something like this this is the big bite baits kamikaze crawl you saw me catch that almost five pounder on this it has more of like a flappy waving action to it something that's got commotion something's gonna get those fish you know triggered to come up and eat it um so i like a craw smile man would slap me if i didn't talk about tequila sunrise his all-time favorite warm color but i noticed strike king has that in the crawl is going to be throwing that soon some sort of green pumpkin you know if you've got kind of cleaner water a uh like a watermelon red is great or you can go with something you know just kind of different this is kind of my third category is a beaver style bait uh these are great when you're around real thick stuff real thick wooden cover because you can see how streamlined it is goes in around that brush real well and comes out easy i would throw something like this in thick brush as opposed to that big long ribbon tail worm because it can get caught up and wrapped around stuff but you know you can go with like a green pumpkin chartreuse is also good in that stained water during the summer like your summer craw type color they'll call it june bug is another really good color in stained water and as you get to the cleaner water something you know just more natural if i could only pick one again it would be green pumpkin it works in uh stained water works in cleaner water uh or just an all straight black don't go overboard with your colors get a couple and focus on fishing okay now when it comes to the setup what am i running well if i only had uh to pick one i would go with either a three or four ewg hook and you can see this ewg style is great because you can text pose it like that and it makes it completely weedless three or four ewg hook with either a quarter or three ounce tungsten weight and really just because it's so small um also the tungsten when you hit rocks and stuff you can feel them so much easier um i do really like tungsten now if you're starting out you know going with like quarter ounce lead just to get used to it you are gonna get snagged and such but as you get more comfortable with it i would go with uh the actual tungsten now when it comes to pegging the weight what i can tell you is i try to not peg it if i can get away with it so if i'm around like just big logs where i can drag it over it pretty easy kind of sparse grass i'm not going to peg it but once i start getting into the thicker stuff thicker bushes like the real fingery bushes or thicker grass i'm going to use a peg and all that does is keeps your weight pinned right down next to this lure so it's not what will happen is if you don't have a peg the weight will fall down and then the the plastic is coming after it you might get it all tangled up and stuff and just becomes a headache so that's kind of my deal if you can get away with it don't peg it if it gets thick just peg it line is going to depend what i'm around um 15 is kind of my 15 pound fluorocarbon is kind of my go-to um 17 is kind of my middle of the road and then you can go up to 20 if you're around thick stuff or even 25 but my line is going to be determined by what i'm around how thick the cover is because especially if you're a bank angler if you flip into the middle of some gnarly wood and hook a fish you've got to be able to get it out again you're not in a boat or you know or kayak where you can just drive over and get that fish out you've got to be able to winch it back to you so i tend to err on the side of caution um this is some 17-pound fluorocarbon this is the the p-line in the blue box just their regular 100 fluorocarbon i really liked it um when it comes to the combo i like a 7-2 is my favorite all-around rod so i would say like a seven foot to a seven four maybe um depending on what you like but medium heavy to a heavy power now this is actually a heavy but it's rated for lures up to one ounce and in a lot of companies that's going to be their medium heavy rod so it's tough because rod companies they're not all the same there's not like a standard but i would say a medium heavy to a heavy i like a fast action some people like stuff that's a rather it's a little bit more bendy that's kind of up to you i don't get too crazy about it because most of the time i'm just kind of flipping a pitch and stuff pretty close and more than often you're going to feel that bite now for the real i do like a 7-speed reel this happens to be an old corrado 200 d7 a little bit more line capacity but you don't need that like i said you're flipping a pitch and stuff closed so you can just most of the hundred dollar wheels like what a lose lfs seven speed um revo x daiwa tatula ct or the daiwa fuego slx any of those reels are great for like just all-purpose flipping and pitching or even your chatterbait combo anything like that you don't really need anything too specialized so now one big tip for the texas rig is very up and hit whatever you're hitting at different angles so what i mean is like if you come by a lay down i see a lot of guys come up to a lay down and they'll throw like right at the front of it maybe twice and then move on like oh if there's a fish there it would have got it i can't tell you how many times i've hit a lay down from different angles you know right in front of it to the sides of it when it's really hot in the summer sometimes you have to get right in the middle of it right in the heart of it and almost hit those fish on the head because if it's not right there they're not moving out three four feet to just come out and attack that lure it's a good uh big size piece of cover there's gonna be multiple fish on it so don't fish safe don't just throw like two feet out from it and say oh there's nothing there pick it apart especially if it looks fishy that's what randall randazzle always says it looks fishy fishy well yeah i agree and of course fine wood pitch to wood okay lure number five i had to think hard about this because there's a number of lures top water lures that you can throw in the summer you know i talked about the frog that's my favorite when there's a ton of vegetation but some sort of moving top water bait now you could go like a stick bait or you know like a walking pencil style bait you could go with a whopper plopper you could go with just a regular popper like a an old rebel pop r and i thought about it i'm like you know what a lure that i used to throw a ton that has kind of been neglected lately i was actually throwing this i'm loving the the cumberland pro lures buzz bait i was throwing a little quarter ounce um they have them with both the clacker you can see the little clacker deal there or without the one i was throwing the other night did not have the clacker on it and a buzzbait is so good in the summer because like i said those bass are more active low light early in the morning like the first couple hours of sun up on the last couple hours of sundown bass are active they want some sort of commotion and the buzzbait just does so well um you know paralleling uh riprap banks has been always my favorite to throw a buzzbait but along grass lines um bringing it next to wood you know submerged wood and laydowns it just brings bass you know if you've got a little bit of stain to the water a little bit of ripple on the water perfect to throw that buzz bait good loud commotion and it will bring fish up and in so when it comes to some brands and colors um like i said that cumberland i was using the white one from cumberland the other night i've got that video coming up soon caught some good fish on that really liking that because it runs true and that's the big hard thing for me is finding a good buzzbait that runs true where it runs straight you know it's not always running off to the side or wanting to spin theirs did really well i also like a buzz toad this happens to be a war eagle buzz toad right so instead of the skirt you can put whatever toad you want like the zoom horny toad's a good one uh there's a ton of them out there but a couple different ways you can run that buzzbait oh speaking of that cumberland buzzbait that's exactly what i was throwing right there but we'll cover that more in the video there's like what the bit the mega bass jamaica bow is one that people have been talking about um this is an old booyah i actually took and just put a paddle tail on there that's got the clacker so you can see it clacks and then this is the evergreen loud buzz i think they call it um there's a ton of them out there find what you like some with a good squeak see how that's got a good squeak to it something that runs true that's really what i'm looking for now i really go two colors for my buzzbaits if i'm trying to imitate shad bait fish i go white uh if it's low light i usually just go to a black i keep it really simple you can go you know with like a flashy shad you can go with the bluegill you know if you're fishing in a pond um i'll go with like a smaller quarter ounce buzzbait usually if i'm pond fishing just because it's a little smaller a little lighter and then i'll go to something bigger like a three-eighths or a half ounce if i'm fishing a larger lake but really a darker color and a white color that's it keep it simple now when it comes to the combo i like a seven foot medium heavy power rod so this is the new ava garcia maxx and this whole combo is like gosh what i don't even remember i'll link it down below but cheap uh you don't need a super expensive rod again remember it's gonna be top water you're gonna see those blow ups but i like a soft rod some of the cheaper rods that's often a benefit because this whole combo together is like what i think seventy dollars um and the reel is like fifty so that's like a twenty dollar rod right uh but a lot of times the cheap rods are gonna be soft more bendy they're not as crisp and i actually like that for top water so um this is rated for lures up to three fourths of an ounce uh i like 17 pound monofilament on there that's the trilene the crystal clear blue uh trialing in the red box xl love that love the the motto for top water like that on a buzz bait you can go braid uh some guys go fluorocarbon you know because you're keeping that bait moving fluorocarbon doesn't float but like i said you as soon as you throw that buzzbait out you're winding it in and it's staying on top so you can do that too but i generally like like a 7.5 speed reel now against the norm this is a 6.4 speed reel and you're thinking well that's a buzz bait you need a super fast reel right no it just means you have to reel faster so when i throw this out i'm really working if you had a faster like 7.5 or even an eight speed reel you can throw it out and you're not working as much but if you don't have a high speed reel don't worry like i said this is a 6.4 and i was throwing a whopper popper on it and the buzzbait works just fine all right now my tip for fishing that buzzbait is like i was saying keep your rod tip up so as soon as you cast you want that rod tip up and you want to be reeling as soon as it hits the water because a lot of times if you're throwing like a round down wood or you know a long grass line or whatever that fish might come within that first you know crank or two even sometimes right as it's hitting it's starting to go you're gonna get that blow up so with the buzz bait be ready a lot of the times those hits are gonna come just as soon as you're getting to that and be ready when that that buzzbait is coming past those high interest or high percentage spots you know wood or whatever be ready because you're going to get that blow up and you're going to want to yank it away just keep reeling keep reeling if that fish has it it's going to load up and as soon as you start to feel that weight then you can pull into it but what you don't want to do is be reeling and it blows up try to set the hook as soon as you can because you can miss it and then you've pulled it clear away whereas if you just keep reeling i know it's hard you've got to train yourself but if you just keep reeling that fish might come up and slap it and come back up and get it again so keep reeling be ready keep that rod tip up be ready to reel as soon as it hits the water all right fish and friends that's going to do it for me my top five summer bass fishing lures that frog the wacky rig chatter bait texas rig and of course the buzzbait so do me a favor and comment below let me know do you agree with my picks do you have other picks there's so many lures out there that you can choose you know it depends on your fishing style where and how
