what's up everybody and welcome back to the channel you guys have been asking me for quite some time to remake my best OBS recording settings video with the new OBS update it's been a while since we did this so if you want your stream to look nice and crispy and clear and smooth this is the video for you and I'm gonna do it as quick and painless as possible but before we jump into it guys let's give a shout out and a thank you to our sponsor for today's video own.tv own.tv is the place to go guys if you're looking for some fresh new graphics for your stream whether you're on Twitch YouTube or Facebook gaming you'll find something that's a perfect fit for your channel they offer full themed overlay packages which are great if you're trying to give your stream a complete makeover but let's say you're just looking to pick up some new alert Graphics don't worry because they've got you covered there too you could find single Graphics such as alerts banners panels and logos as well and one of the best parts about most of these overlays is that they are completely modular so if you and your friends all pick up the same overlay such as this Rodan one right here you can change the colors and tweak it to match your brand and none of you will have the exact same overlay if you guys are looking to take your stream to the next level be sure to check out own.tv using my link below to support the channel alright guys so without further Ado I'm going to switch to showing you guys my desktop and let's dive in okay so the first thing that we're gonna do here is head on down to our settings in the bottom right corner of OBS in the general tab here there is not really much that's going to affect your recordings I suggest using Yami as the theme for your OBS it just looks really really nice and then scrolling down here we can enable Source alignment snapping and what this is going to allow us to do is line up our sources nice and smooth on our our scenes um and if you don't have this enabled you can kind of free move all your sources around but I do suggest having it enabled and set your snap sensitivity to 10.0 and snap sources to edge of screen and snap sources to other sources this will help us to align everything nicely and make sure that everything looks nice and smooth and even throughout all of our scenes heading on over to the next tab we have the streaming tab we're going to kind of ignore this this is a recording settings video I do have a streaming settings video if you guys want to check that out where I go more into depth with this kind of stuff uh we're gonna head over to the output tab now here's where stuff gets different so in the output mode up top change it from simple to Advanced if you haven't yet and then head over to the recording tab now in the recording tab here you want to type set this to standard and for recording path choose where you want your recordings to go I record everything it gets sent to my e Drive which is a specific SSD that I have in my PC for all my recordings to go to and then I kind of go there after I'm done recording and then I rename things and I move them where they need to be so for your recording path make sure you select wherever you want your recordings to end up all this stuff is grayed out for me right now just because I'm recording with OBS currently and you can't change these settings while you're recording so next thing we're going to do is head on down to recording format I record an mp4 for and here's where you can do things a little bit differently so let me explain this to you recording in MP4 format is great you don't really have to do much when it comes to converting videos or anything like that but really what happens if you're recording an mp4 and you're recording a longer video maybe more than like 10 minutes where it would really be detrimental and a terrible thing if your recording got corrupt you might not want to record an mp4 you might want to record an FLV and then have OBS automatically remux that down to an mp4 at the end of the recording which I'll show you guys how to do in a bit so recording format I use MP4 if you're doing more longer form videos like 20 30 minutes plus I would suggest not recording an mp4 but then heading down to our video encoder whether you're using an AMD GPU or an Nvidia GPU there is a setting for you here the only thing I'm going to say is try to not use x264 so what x264 encoding is it's software encoding it's using your CPU your processor to encode your video and this can be really really heavy on your machine's resources you'll start to drop frames in your games and if you don't have a super super high-end PC you're probably going to get some encoding overload errors so if you're using an Nvidia GPU I suggest using Nvidia nvank h.264 as your video encoder and if you're using an AMD GPU I suggest using the AMD counterpart for your audio encoder you're going to be using ffmpeg AAC and then your audio track selected is going to be one if you're using more than one audio track here you're most likely not watching this video uh just because if you're using more than one audio track you're probably a little bit more Advanced and doing something a little bit more complex and I'm assuming you already know how to set up OBS so for rescale output don't check this here even if you are down scaling your recordings to 720p we can downscale this later so I suggest not having this box checked right here custom boxer settings there should be nothing there automatic file splitting split by time and then heading down to the encoder settings themselves for rate control you want to set this to cqp and then your CQ level you can set this anywhere between 16 and 20 is pretty acceptable the lower you go the better quality your video will be now 16 and 17 are for the most part almost lossless video quality they are Stellar beautiful crispy smooth it really does look lossless but going any lower than 18 keep in mind you're going to be jacking up those file sizes quite a bit your files are going to be massive especially if you're doing long recordings when I do these recordings the these videos are roughly 10 to 11 minutes each so using CQ level 16 really isn't that big of a deal for me and just so you guys have a rough estimate a 10 minute long video recorded at CQ level 16 ends up being anywhere from three to four gigabytes so keep that in mind going up to 18 they probably be about 2.5 gigabytes um and then 20 they'd probably be around 1.5 to 2 gigabytes so keep that in mind I record these in at uh 16 just because I have the space and why not just do it but there's really a small difference between 16 to 18. keyframe interval you want to set this to two seconds for your preset now this is going to depend on your machine I use slowest and I'm running an AMD 7800 x3d CPU with a 3080 TI graphics card and the 3080 TI is what's being used to encode so tailor this through your machine I suggest trying slowest if you start getting some encoding overload errors or you're dropping frames in your games and things like that go down to slower and then go to slow I would try and not really go any lower than slow but the difference between p7 and P5 here slow and slowest is very minimal so if you have to run it on P5 that's perfectly fine as well for tuning you're going to set this to high quality multi-pass mode you can set this to quarter resolution if you're not having any errors you could jack it up to full resolution which I suggest doing there's a very small difference between these two as well so if you are having issues with full resolution drop it to quarter resolution it's not making your request recording at one-fourth the quality it's a very small difference between full resolution and quarter resolution so try both see which one runs smoother obviously if you can run full resolution profile set this to high look ahead have this unchecked psycho visual tuning you want to check this and GPU set this to zero with Max B frames set to 2. heading on over to the audio tab uh you're gonna want your sample rate set to 48 your channel set to stereo make sure this is not set to Mono otherwise your recordings are going to have audio coming out of one ear it's going to be really weird it's just not gonna work well for your Global audio devices so mine are all disabled here and I have one device which is called broadcast stream mix and the reason for this is because all of my audio all of my devices everything is going through my go XLR I'm doing the mixing on there and then it's outputting one line to my stream or my recording and that's called my broadcast stream mix if you do not have a go XLR your desktop audio device is going to be either default or your headphones whatever you're listening to audio on whatever the audio is that you want your recording to have you're going to select that here and then for your microphone right here you'll probably be selecting either your headset microphone or your USB microphone whatever it is that you're using so keep keep that in mind that's why mine looks a little bit different scrolling down here you can do some audio monitoring right here if you want to set that up I don't suggest doing this unless you really know what you're doing just because you can kind of make yourself sound weird and you'll be hearing yourself while you're streaming I do this but it's because I can mix it down in my go XLR so that I can like very very briefly hear my microphone so I can kind of sound what it sounds like to you guys while I'm live but for recordings I would not suggest monitoring your audio I would do a recording a test recording see what you sound like stop the recording play it back okay I want to change my mic settings a little bit change it and then record again until you get your settings dialed in the way that you want so scrolling down here there's nothing else here that will affect your stream your recordings heading on over to the video tab so your base canvas resolution this is going to be what your monitor is what you're gaming at I play games and I do all my recordings in 1080P at 60fps my monitor is a 1080p 240Hz gaming monitor I don't do any down scaling so if you're going to downscale to 720 here is where you would select that option you would change change this right here to 1280 by 720 and then your down scale filter if these two are matching and you're not down scaling you don't need a down scale filter if you're playing in 1080 or 2K or 4K and you're down scaling to 1080 for the downscale filter you might want to use lanxos it's the highest one if you can't use yet use that use the middle option for your FPS values if you want your recording to be 60fps select 60fps here if you want it to be 30 FPS use 30. if you're doing gaming recordings I suggest 60 if you're doing more of a recording like just full screen camera you're doing like a podcast type of thing or you're just talking you can get away with 30 FPS no problem heading on over to the next tab which is hotkeys this is where you can use your keyboard or any extra keys on your keyboard that you're not using in your games you can assign those keys to do functions within OBS if you wanted to start your recording stop your recording um hide or show a source on your screen with the click of a button this is where you would select that you would basically you know everyone here has used hotkeys or keybinds in games it's the same idea here obviously if you want your start streaming button to be the colon key on your keyboard you would click in here and then click colon and now you can click colon and start streaming just with that one button going down to the accessibility tab there's nothing super important in here that you guys need to worry about and then under the advanced tab you want to make sure your process priority is always set to normal set this any higher what can happen is your PC can allocate more resources to OBS than it actually needs and then you'll start dropping frames doing other things like playing games and things like that under the video settings here your color space I would set this to 709 your color format and V12 if it's available your SDR white level 300 nits your color range I suggest keeping this unlimited you can set it to full and it will give you a small amount of of a brightness boost to your recordings but I noticed that the coloring wasn't as accurate as when you have it set to limit it when you set it to limited the colors are a little bit darker and it to me it makes for a deeper more contrasted recording you could play around with this and try both limited or partial and full but I suggest using limited or partial for this as I think it gives you a much better quality recording now under the recording tab here remember earlier when I said if you don't want to record um in MP4 just in case let's say you blue screen while you're recording and you had a 40 minute recording now that whole thing is corrupt um you can check automatically remux to MP4 right here um and record an MKV format which is a lot more recoverable if your computer does crash and then at the end of the recording it'll automatically change it to an mp4 for you so you could select that right here in stream delay we're not going to worry about that automatically reconnect these are all streaming settings going forward so there it is guys that is my best OBS recording settings if you're trying to record games or YouTube videos or anything like that like I said use my settings and then kind of tweak them to your machine if you absolutely need to but you can start with my settings if you don't have much knowledge on what this stuff is start with my settings and then kind of tune things down a little bit until you hit that sweet spot where everything is working for you so if this video helped you guys or you enjoyed it hit that like button it really does help me out and subscribe to the channel turn on post notifications so you don't miss the next time I post a video and if you want to hang out with me live I do stream on Twitch Monday through Friday at 8pm eastern time I'll drop a link to that in the description below this video thank you guys all so much for watching I want you to keep those hammers up and I'll see you next time foreign [Music]
