if your lawnmower is working a lot harder to mow the lawn these days than it used to and the tips of the grass are looking a little bit brown there's a good chance a lot more blades need sharpen so the question is which option is the best we have a bunch of different options so let's get the testing underway and let's find out in the first test we'll see how the sharpeners perform at pre-sharpening a new blade then we'll see how they perform sharpening a blade with rock chips we'll see how the blades perform sharpening a badly worn blade at a price of 10 the least expensive brand we'll be testing is made by fun volution fast automatic easy safe saves time and effort mower blade sharpener can simply attach to power drills and sharpen the blade easily and quickly the fun volution is made in china the fun volution weighs 70 grams highly recommend placing the blade in a vise or securing the blade using a clamp unfortunately the fun volution did not come with a set of instructions but it does seem pretty straightforward to use keeping the plastic guide parallel with the grass side of the blade helps form a 30 degree edge the factory ground edge has some pretty deep gouges that will remove in addition to removing the paint it took about a minute and a half for the finvolution to remove the factory paint as well as the factory ground edge at a price of 20 is this smith's mower blade sharpener it claims to quickly sharpen dull mower blades we're going to test that comes with a cleaning brush and handle the smith sharpener is made in china if needed to clean the edge of your blade using a wire brush and handle secure mower blade in a vise with cutting edge exposed position head of sharpener over one end of the cutting edge pull sharpener over the cutting edge while applying downward pressure follow the contours of the blade repeat this action until sharp additional pulls may be required if the blade is made of a very hard steel using a smith it took me about a minute to remove the paint as well as a factory sharpened edge from the front to the back of the sharpened section is about a half an inch unfortunately the smith's only sharpens about half of the sharpened edge a look at the sharpened edges in the microscope and you can see that the smiths basically scrapes or peels away the metal to reshape the blade edge this mess actually did a great job of sharpening the top side of the blade and not the grass side at a price of 80 is this work sharp knife and tool sharpener creates the sharpest blades you've ever had easily replaceable abrasive grit belts comes with a coarse 80 grit medium 220 and fine 6000 abrasive belts won't burn or damage blade steel during sharpening precision sharpening guide provides fast easy repeatable and consistent results can be used to sharpen lawnmower blades garden pruners shears shovels scrapers and more one year warranty remove knifeguard install green belt to change the belt push the tensioner down and make one quarter turn to the right to lock in place center the belt on all three pulleys turn the tensioner one quarter turn to the left to release use the red knob to adjust pulley for belt tracking move sharpening cassette to grinding position b grind edge until you are satisfied with the sharpness the tool is not intended for heavy duty use do not exceed 20 minutes use in one hour about four and a half minutes remove the paint as well as the factory edge unfortunately work sharp leaves a convex edge instead of a perfectly flat one as you can see the blade on the bottom has a convex edge to it compared to a flat edge with a new blade at a price of 235 dollars is this all american model 5000 the all-american is made in the usa the model 5000 allows for either a 30 degree sharpening or a 15 degree for mulching blades the size as well as a thread pitch varies from grinder to grinder so fortunately the all-american came with four different options with the grinder unplug choose a guide pin that fits your four to five inch grinder lightly snug the lock nut with a wrench to secure the guide pin to your grinder the sharpener can be mounted in several different ways bench top bolted or clamped open the jaws wide enough to accept your blade by unscrewing the handle with the blade clamped in the vise slide the pivot pin into the pivot bushing the blade should be held in place with four clamping pins in the center of the blade so that it is straight and square as possible with the edge to be ground facing up and towards the top the guide arm should be along side of your grinder not out in front turn on the grinder and take light consistent cuts from front to back using a pushing motion holding the grinder body in your right hand grasp the grinder handle in your left take care to keep slight pressure holding the pin against the pivot bushing as you grind the all-american recommends a 36 to 60 grit flapper wheel however hardness can be used but it's very easy to gouge the blade eight seconds to remove the paint and resurface the blade edge at a price of 309 the most expensive brand we'll be testing is made by oregon model thousand 88025 hundred fifty rpm motor sharpens any length cutting edge uses eight inch organ grinding stone the organ is made in taiwan the two small guards install on the studs on the bottom of the stone guard on each side using one nut and one washer per stud the guard should be adjusted at all times so they are no more than one quarter inch from the stone the large t-guard mounts on the stud on the right bottom of the main table using one washer and one nut mount the table plate on the left or right side of the table using two washers and two thumb screws adjusting the grinding angle place the blade to be ground on the table so that the bottom or the grass side of the blade is flat against the table plate the grinding wheel is hitting on the top of the blade so we're going to have to lower the blade to get the right angle adjust the grinding angle by first loosening the nuts that lock the adjustment in place turn the adjuster on the top of the grinder to either raise or lower the grinding wheel creating the correct angle once the proper angle is achieved lock the adjustment by tightening the nuts after the correct depth and the angle are set adjust the table plate within 1 8 of an inch of the stone by loosening the thumb screws and sliding it towards the stone hold the blade with two hands on the end opposite of the one you intend to sharpen carefully place the blade on the work table with the grass side down move the cutting edge of the blade towards the grinding wheel the grinding surface of the wheel and the cutting edge should be kept parallel once the cutting edge and the grinding wheel are in contact with each other begin to move back and forth from the beginning to the end of the cutting edge keep a steady pressure against the blade continue this motion until the edge is sharp the organ needed about 35 seconds to remove the paint as well as the factory edge instead of going out and buying a blade sharpener some people just use a bench grinder so let's test that next an affordable bench grinder can be found for around fifty dollars using a flapper disc definitely seems to provide a better result about 30 seconds to remove the factory sharpened edge so the all-american is the fastest at eight seconds organ and the bench grinder 30 seconds smith 60 fun volution 90 and the work sharp 270 seconds let's see how the blade sharpeners perform on a blade that needs sharpened and let's add some dings to it to simulate rock chips let's also measure the before and the after weight of the blades to see how efficiently the blades remove metal before sharpening the blade with the fun volution the blade weighs 1 097 grams let's see how much progress it can make in five minutes the rock chips are causing the fun evolution to grab and jerk so moving the fun volution at a steady speed across the blade is a challenge the blade edge is around 27 degrees after attempting to sharpen the blade for five minutes unfortunately there's still a lot of chips especially on the bottom side of the blade the foam volution doesn't grind the very bottom of the blade so if there's rock chips or imperfections that need corrected using a grinder or file will help eliminate the chips on the very bottom unfortunately the blade just doesn't look that much sharper than it did when we first started the fun volution started out at 841 grams and now weighs 837 grams a loss of four before sharpening the blade with the smiths the blade also weighs 1097 grams just like the fun volution the smiths also really struggled with the rock chips the smiths didn't remove enough metal to change the angle of the blade from very close to 30 degrees in a five minute period of time this mist definitely made more progress than the fun volution at putting an edge on the blade unfortunately it just didn't do a very good job repairing all the chips just like the foam evolution this mess only works on one side of the blade and because of that the bottom side or the grass side of the blade still has a lot of chips and damage to it the smith blade also started off at 1097 grams only down one gram after five minutes before sharpening the blade with the workshop the blade weighs 1087 grams with the work sharp i'll begin sanding the bottom or the grass side of the blade first then the top side in a five minute time span the workshop made a tremendous amount of progress removing the chips the blade edge with the work sharp is very close to 30 degrees the work sharp has definitely done by far the best job yet another 5 or 10 minutes and all the rock chips could have been removed just like when we use the work sharp on the new blade it does leave a convex edge the blade sharpened by the work sharp started off at 1 087 grams it's down 2 grams to 1085 the blade that i'll be using to test the all-american is 1095 grams since there's quite a bit of damage to this blade i'll be removing quite a bit of metal the flat disc seems to be cutting quite a bit faster than a grinding wheel however it does leave a slightly convex edge if you want a flatter edge you can always use a grinding wheel with the all-american system the blade edge is very close to 30 degrees i really took my time and only used four to five minutes to sharpen the blade and it has done by far the best job yet this is the first time i've used all-american it is extremely easy to use and allowed me to make a very straight edge very impressive i really sharpened the blade quite a bit and left a burr on the back side of the blade but all the chips had been removed the all-americans started off at 1095 grams and after only four minutes it's down to 1074. grams for the oregon the one third horsepower motor on the organ seems to have plenty of power for sharpening the blade it's a lot easier to find the correct sharpening angle compared to free handing it with the bench grinder i didn't set the blade angle perfectly but 29 degrees is close enough to 30. the organ definitely did a very good job it just doesn't cut nearly as fast as an angle grinder with the flap disc which is used for the all-american i used the full five minutes with the organ blade and unfortunately i didn't quite get all the chips out of the blade i needed about two more minutes in order to remove the rock chips without overheating the blade the organ started off at a thousand and ninety six grams and is down to a thousand and eighty eight which is a loss of eight grams bench grinder 1085 grams with the bench grinder i'll first start off by removing the metal protrusions from the rock chips on the bottom side of the blade then i'll cut away the leading edge of the blade until the chips are no longer present with the bench grinder i didn't do a very good job of making a 30 degree edge i used the full five minutes with the bench grinder and it actually did a very good job but i wasn't able to do quite as well as i did with the all-american or the oregon the organ blade is on top and it provided a much more consistent blade edge angle the all-american is by far the fastest option for sharpening blades removing 21 grams of metal in four minutes the organ in the bench grinder removed eight in five minutes the fun volution in the workshop removed two grams and the smith removed one badly dulled blades do a poor job of actually cutting the grass the grass tends to lay over and the grass looks as if it's been torn instead of cut so let's see which brand does the best job sharpening a really dull worn out blade the fun volution blade weighs 841 grams since these blades are extremely dull let's see how much progress they can make in 15 minutes beginning with the fun volution and the fun volution held up fine for 12 minutes but the blade finally wore through the plastic guide on the back of the fun volution so i stopped the test to install a new grinding wheel unfortunately the replacement stone wasn't properly attached so i used the remaining two wheels and they had the same problem so only one out of four wheels worked properly fun volution started out at 841 grams and now weighs 837 grams a loss of four even though the fonvolution didn't survive the test it did a pretty good job of sharpening the blade there are several areas that still need a lot of work including the blade angle which is way off at 40 degrees before sharpening the smiths it weighs 871 grams unfortunately i pretty much wore out the blade edge on the smiths during the 15 minutes i used trying to carve away the excess steel to form the proper blade angle unfortunately the sharpener is just too narrow for the blade also you can see that the sharpener carved out a section of the blade edge the blade is at 54 degrees and still needs a lot of work the blade sharpened by the smith started out at 871 grams and now weighs 870 so only one gram of metal was removed the work sharp weighs 829 grams the work sharp seems like a great tool but it's definitely undersized for a badly dull lawnmower blade the larger sharpeners remove metal much more efficiently the blade angle is very close to where it should be but the work sharp needs a lot of time to remove the excess metal the blade is still really dull the blade sharpened by the workshop started out at 829 grams and now weighs 826 a loss of 3 grams the all-american weighs 837 grams and the all-american made very quick and easy work of removing the excess metal and forming a consistent and smooth blade edge i only needed three minutes to sharpen the blade and the blade edge is very close to 30 degrees the blade started out at 837 grams and now weighs 818 a loss of 19 grams in only three minutes the oregon blade weighs 870 grams while not as fast as the all-american the organ is still very fast and only needed four and a half minutes to sharpen the blade i didn't have the organs set up precisely for 30 degrees but it's still pretty close the organs started off at 870 grams and now weighs 859 a loss of 11 grams the bench grinder weighs 826 grams carving off the excess material on the bench grinder is less precise than the all-american or the organ with the bench grinder it took me six and a half minutes to sharpen the blade to give this blade a proper sharpening i need to spend a couple more minutes getting closer to a 30 degree blade edge the bench grinder blade started off at 826 grams and is now down to 819 a loss of seven grams so the all-american finished sharpening the blade in three minutes oregon four and a half in the bench grinder six and a half minutes unfortunately even after 15 minutes the fun volusion smiths and the worksharp weren't able to properly sharpen the blade balancing a lot more blade really helps reduce vibration you can find a blade balancer like this one for just a few dollars with the blade centered on the balancer the blade should be level if one side of the blade is lower than the other the lower side needs metal removed i really like the all-american but it is sort of expensive at around 200 however it is very compact it saves shop space and it works very effectively i also like the organ quite a bit biggest issue with the organ though is it's not quite as fast it's more expensive and uses more space all the videos in this channel including this one are viewer suggested so if you have a video idea i hope you'll take time to leave a comment thanks so much for watching please take care and look forward to next time
