[Music] Alexandria one of the most historic cities in the world a place I was founded around 300 BC a site where two of the world's greatest wonders once stood bordering the Mediterranean Sea the largest ports in Egypt and also known as one of the greatest food cities in this country I only have about a day and a half here so let's not waste any time let's get to eating our first table is in this area known as meeting Bihari and there's a market that stretches across this is where the locals go for meats fish seafood vegetables and you just walk around here you pick up what you want to eat there's a ton of places that will just cook the food for you and this is a place a lot of people have told me that if you want fresh fish at a good price this is where you go don't go to the fish market coming here so we're gonna go check this out this is such a lively market I mean everything whatever you're looking for fish vegetables eggs chicken alright we're gonna go get some seafood I think and then maybe some bread some herbs I don't know and then we'll go find a place that cook it for us [Music] I think this is a huge fish sale right here this particular stall is poppin I'm thinking they're trying to get rid of all this fish in this is a good deal right now this is what I'm expecting when I come to each up markets like this okay let's go pick out some seafood let's get some sardines I don't know that sardine sounds good was getting it I'm kind of a peer pressure kind of guy so I want some too so apparently they're having us so often it's about half price right now and sardine and I'm getting into it half kilo for ten pounds that's so cheap that's like less than a dollar for have a gillip yeah yeah I don't know what that is but I'm into it Wow let's do it come on well thank you get a street fight right now with a fish vendor he got me he got me you know I love it when I go to a country and I can save some money this is great I'm so excited let's get some crab and other seafood one kilo one kilo one kilo okay okay listen this guy's good you got myself with this dude gonna watch all four nope just got a kilo of crab sixty pounds I'm buying all my fish on this gentleman right here you beat me in a battle fair and square gets my business Oh me like this is heavy already we gotta get some squid we need some prawns for short and maybe some like little clams I feel like I need some other stuff all right we got some crab in there too so we got some fish crab and then we got some plans our crab just went on the grill so part of our stuff is grilled part of our stuff is fried wow that's what I call a flaming crab that crab is definitely on fire I have a feeling this guy likes to burn stuff oh oh okay okay okay yeah I get some I get to flip my own crab there you go okay okay let's get a little hot in here this is not an easy job I'm telling you right now this guy has it hard you are you are good man you must be you must be he resistant oh I got respect for you buddy you are my respect that is that is not easy I swear this guy can walk into a volcano and be okay whew I gonna back out of that [Music] we're gonna grab our seafood and you notice there's no place to eat around here that's because you grab your food and you go to any of the surrounding cafes you sit down order some tea and you take in it's like the beginning of an Avengers movie odds is the anticipation is killing me gotta have some bread so there's a bread maker right across the street we're gonna get a couple of get a pack of freshly baked bread I don't even started eating and this experience is already just blowing me away this is one of the best markets I've been to again even before I'm tasting the food just because every single person I interacted with it's been absolutely beautiful I've been so incredibly lovely and friendly and accommodating once you get your you get it cooked they cooked all this for 40 Egyptian pound which is just a few dollars I got the calamari crab little clams and in sardines and they're cooked in different ways I guess start with a calamari oh this thing's been sitting in this little container for about 15-20 minutes I was kind of really a frame for it but once I tapped it is still really really crispy that's as fresh and as delicious as you won't ever find calamari to be I wish I put this in my mouth as soon as it came out of the fryer but even now the outside still we change this crunch inside there's the most gentle cooked sweet calamari what I love about a job is that it's never just simply salt and pepper oh there's salt there's chilies there's pepper so much spices making this one of the most flavorful calamari dishes I've ever had in my life and you don't need a dipping sauce with it this is absolutely perfect on his own oMG trust me OMG you know how like if you don't cook calamari well it turns into rubber not this baby tender to the pipe I'm gonna jumped into this little clams because they've been sauteed it so they've been sitting for a long time I'm so sad there's to be so much juice here and it's coming evaporate it Wow spicy we got the fresh herbs making a very aromatic little bits of parsley tiny bit of sweetness from the tomato the clams itself natural sweet flavor with that slight tiny bit of brine eNOS that makes you want to keep popping those into your mouth all this as fresh as you can possibly possibly imagine they're so incredibly sweet and tasty mmm Oh a bit of ginger in there too it's not simple you know it's never simply seasoned and that's what I love about this region because it got such an array of spices I'm getting know how to use them little sardines look at this that's such a beautiful little fish oh my gosh make sure you get a fish dish the outside shell they bread it isn't fried it again it's miss city miss continue for a little bit so it's nice crunchy is as it probably was when it first came on the prior to meet ever so delicate a little bitty bulge don't worry about that when they throw I judge you can chew that barrier but what's great about this is the flavor from the outside completely seeped into the fish look at the chilies and the spices and all that great breading on the outside is Lois our game there's nothing like one to a fish market buying the seafood directly having someone cooking for you and you eating it right away the freshness the texture is unbelievable now imagine all that in a country where but there are wizards and using spices the seafood just becomes exponentially better the only way to truly know what I'm talking about let's come here and try this I mean this whole meal from the cooking to getting the raw ingredients and trust me I've got a lot of seafood this whole thing under 20 bucks in the crab eat that for sure oh that's why I got the bread for fresh bread wipe up the insides of the crab fresh bread fresh seafood it's really hard to get much better than what it is right now look at that succulent juicy crab fresh off the grill if you want to taste something that's so sweet you get so smoky and tender at the same time this is where you're looking for we taste that slight bitterness from the grill such soft succulent crabmeat and on the outside when you're sucking on it let me flush me you should be sucking on it and change the cumin and the chilies and the coriander I've had meaning roast squab in my job this is one of the best actually this might be one of the best seafood experiences I've ever had in my life there's normally when you roasted seafood anything spy stuff like this I'm gonna be a dishwasher to this crap choosers just flowing out of my mouth I'm gonna use a piece of bread to wipe up the juice from the crab because I'm wasting nap check this out guys I'm gonna show you our a little hack I just start up bread open it up show some calamari in there close that baby up calamari sandwich a little dipping sauce this be even more perfect also at this market besides everyone I met being just the most friendliest people ever no one try to upsell me I paid exactly what the price was no one trying to give me a different pricing everybody was fair some people cooking my food even cook the crap for free for me which is like as a gift I'll say that's this market if you're ever in a new job it's worth coming to Alexandra I mean this is such a beautifully historic city it's gorgeous it's by the seaside it's been around for thousands of years it is one of the first human civilizations in the world come to this place and just soak up all this history and culture and feast on this this market if you love seafood I'm gonna put this as one of my top seafood aventures ever right here this is it there's a flavour in terms of value in terms of variety whatever this might be at the top right now and after a crazy food meal Troy a cup of tea I just said it relax because that's the way it's done here we get a little bit [Music] [Music] last of the hustle and bustle and people are just taking the times gonna enjoy life a little bit look there's people fishing walking around snacking on stuff and just looking out into the waters in this beautiful city is just enjoying life it's like the perfect that's your lunch activity I asked enough of this let's get let's go eat a sandwich we're on our way to get a very specialized sandwich it's a liver sandwich and we're gonna get it right here this place that smells so good it's what it is put in little little little rolls there's some peppers and chilies in there as well it smells so incredible all right let's go get ourselves one oh my god oh wow how many 15 for for three of you Oh so one is too little no oh my god oh I gotta get more I need like that oh man I didn't know so you normally you have to get at least ten I'm quitting this gentleman right ten okay this is beauty I'm sorry I didn't know look at this I ordered this and look at this this is come on I feel so horrible what did I do I got one for me and one for Ben I thought that was like enough I've never in my life been told I didn't want enough food I never been told that it's always the opposite I wanted too much I have learned my lesson I am sorry I will heat this and then ask for more I was wondering why I like I said I said to you he looked at me like it's only two and I'd like well how many do I need apparently I need a lot but look at this liver sandwich oh look at the oil and the spices the chilies them peppers and some of the pieces are a little minced up you got some solid chunks all right okay so I'm gonna redeem myself oh it doesn't even taste organy it just tastes like really clean chopped liver but just like the craziest blend of spices in the oil that dripped into the bread makes this bread like this little sponge like and vessel that soaked up all the essence of the sandwich and it's spicy and citrusy - bryce spicy because I took a giant bite up pepper the flavor of the liver mixed in with the citrus of the lemon makes just absolutely transformative the solve little bunt is the perfect vessel for this little chopped liver sandwich if I legit want a color for what it is this thing it's a to biter just want to taste a chopped liver if you're not too intellect organism I mean sometimes the liver it may have a very heavy organy flavor it does not I mean this thing must have never had a drink in its life this is the cleanest liver I've ever encountered when you think of a liver sandwich you would never expect it to taste like this I never expected everything to taste like this the most melting your mouth juicy little slice of heaven yeah they're right I mean I'm on my second one feels I didn't get it all this is such a light little sandwich - I bet this is like a pre-dinner thing for most people I can't believe how good this is well we've gotta get some more if I'd left Egypt having just had two of these you'll become the biggest fruit or go to my wife all right now I'm in the game my favorite sandwich herring Egypt if you're on Alexandria you have to come here and try this this should be a national treasure they should show pieces in Egyptian Museum because that's how amazing this thing is oh hello too much chili hello ambitious for me I'm telling you I don't care if you think you like liver or not humming eat dish you're welcome there's a reason this place is like spilling onto the streets with people right now this probably will be my most missed food after I leave Egypt right here um believable Ben's gonna try this all right so good is that the best thing we had in Egypt this is amazing also one of these only about six pounds so fifty cents off by like a dozen at least pasta this bump freshly baked ever so slightly sweet incredibly pillowy and it soaks up that juice from the liver and the lemon and we ensures that this really amazing mouthfeel it's the perfect nest for this awesome liver for something like I said national treasure best thing I had in Egypt so far last night passed out after eating the sandwiches which I don't regret because I really wanted the last thing in my mouth and before I start dreaming to be those sandwiches and this morning for breakfast it's really only one place to go [Music] right here yeah yeah [Music] oh wow [Music] [Music] this is it this is a traditional Egyptian breakfast spread here allowance Andrea well maybe maybe not this but check it out that's what we got we got shot suka which is one of my all-time favorite little Easter Egg dishes this is egg cooked in tomato sauce it is absolutely wondrous we have here and a common food item here is full which is a stewed fava beans so this is fava beans over tehina and this is fava beans with chopped salad on top we got some falafel you got some size shiny little condiments up beats him pickles we're ready to rock and roll man there's so nicely we were filming and some of these dishes work out a little cold and they reheat it up for us steaming hot plate of fava beans over tahina of course you got to get it with some bread I don't even know you know why I got to start with this oh sorry before I forget you gotta spray this with a little citrus and the restaurant I'm in Mohammad aadmi this is the most popular breakfast place in this whole city for both locals and tourists like anybody who comes to Alexandria you gotta come here for breakfast it's open 24 hours of that and so far even before having the food the people nicest like thanks for heating this up by the way this is glorious velvety fava beans so soft like melt-in-your-mouth beans with creamy tahina and just a splash of lemon juice just to give it that little zing I [Music] mean this still I still will fill you up it's delicious it's got to Hina so automatically it's God level then the father basement I'm not a big fan of beans I'm not but I've never have been so delicately so key I mean he's just pop this in your mouth it's like a layer of velvet we turn your tongue in the roof of your mouth and this is a substantial dish I mean these things will fill your deep dish with bread don't get you ready for the day in the second one I got full with tehina and chopped salad on top go for this one oh yeah the already great flavor of the tahina in fall with an extra crunch and juice and the sweetness from the onions and tomatoes this gives us so much more dimensional [Music] this is my jam right here I'm gonna put to rest my chopped salad here well but before that I gotta try this this is a shock show Cup I told you one of my favorite favorite with are you some dishes mainly because like my favorite dish growing up in China was egg and tomatoes so this thing that makes me feel right at home oh my god this is so so good that's the best ratio of sweet tomatoes fresh herbs crunch of the onions the delightfully aromatic olive oil making this flavor that's so incredible like you couldn't reach the bottom of this flavor depth with the summary one of the best if not the best chuck chucka I've ever had in my life now granted I've only had this few times but this should be placed on a holy mantle I like on top of the pyramids this thing right here Wow number one dish here for sure good fish get the phone to chop salad have a basket of bread your your day might not get better than this this might be the highlight I mean it sucks because it's don't breakfast time but I personally don't imagine my day getting better than this Clouseau ooh it's got butter falafel look at this the falafel here is a lot smaller and more Airy than the one I had in that Cairo it's so crispy oh my gosh this is like almost a diet version of a of a Cairo falafel it's so light I mean when you're in Cairo you pick up a falafel I mean you pick it up a few more times your biceps might get bigger this thing it's almost like you want to cover with it it's so gentle and light this is a lightish falafel I've ever had in my life it is you blighters falafel fly falafel I was having expecting there to work the crunch on this thing is mind-blowing you look at all the little spices that's on the outside as well it's so flavorful and an aftertaste ridiculously mild and gentle I mean let me try this falafel in my shock shook up butts cuz this thing is so Airy I imagine it'll soak up things well that's that's definitely a parameter food heaven that is redonkulous get it dump dump also you got a dump this in a tahina I'm gonna give it a little citrus Wow this is so good I had to ask for a second plate already I mean this is like the middle yeast tomatoes and eggs and it's just speaking to my tomatoes an egg loving soul right now this this I mean everything that come and try this rush on 24 hours a day I wish I had more time in Alexandria and we're not done yet we got one more place to go before we get to the airport [Music] final me on this country poor for some dessert all right to final food items in this country kind of sad this is a really really really inexpensive dessert place that all the locals come to this is called ohm Ali is the Egyptian bread pudding whether you can have it with nuts were without of course I got it with you got some macadamia nuts almonds I always loved bread pudding and this is one of the most moist bread pudding I've ever had you notice it's drowning it's like a bread pudding swamp I've never seen something like this it's so interesting and it's nice and warm and toasty if this was a girl I'd be done on one knees right now with a massive ring made of nuts for something Wow I mean it didn't look the prettiest and I was thinking like maybe the bread would be like super soggy and wouldn't really have much texture to it this is so warm Angelica and the bread does have a bit of shoe and has a nice texture with all that sweet milk soaked into it that milk is the stuff of God I mean I'm pretty sure there's a holy cow somewhere in the city when you're just milking that for this particular dessert and I got this hair ice cream again coupled with nuts and dried fruits as well mmm this is basically ice cream and rice pudding Wow well something huh go for this well something cold go for this might suggest you get both never heard of icy hot yeah it's talking about this right I mean I haven't been to a lot of other cities in Egypt yep but for me at least between Cairo and Alexandria even though Cairo is the capital Alexandria should be the food capital I mean the dishes I got here are so unique and completely different than what I had in Cairo and I'm sorry people of Cairo it's so much better I mean they put a car oh really good soup but here is just I will come back here just to eat from the seafood I have yesterday to deliver sandwiches to the breakfast to dish this is definitely a foodies destination and I just want to say the people here some of the kindest warmest most friendly people I've ever met anywhere in the world I mean Alexandria really this place is gonna hold a special place in my heart especially like coming here be able to try completely different cuisine with completely different flavors at the same time so my glowingly delicious like a liver sandwich I love liver I've had liver million times I've never had liver like what they serve here it's just taking foods that you you are familiar with and completely morphing it with local ingredients and flavor this is why this place this city is like a perfect example what I love traveling for food and if you are wearing each other you love food as much as I do this is where you go well so like 50 cents each of these this is gonna have to be my last meal in this country I gotta head to the airport big things to everyone I met along the way all your help all your love and support it helping me translate when I don't speak the local language and just being overall just great people except the horse and carriage and camel people over at the pyramids you guys suck but everyone
