Not sure I could sit through the plaster/molding phase of this and not have a panic attack.

I was a little surprised that they did that as a practical effect and not as CGI, so I had to refresh my memory on the dates. Despite the film being released in 2003, it was produced in 2001 and 2002, as it was filmed concurrently with the second movie in the series. So it makes a little more sense that 2002-era CGI was not quite up to the task. I can't imagine that not being done with CGI if it was produced today.

Those masks are so creepy. It's the army of Michael Myers...

Now I understand why Keanu donated so much money to the practical effects crew. So much work.

I assumed it was all CGI.

While I love this kind of stuff, why did this only pop up now? So strange to see from a movie a decade and a half old.

[Music] the Super Bowl accession is between 1 Smith and me with all the other Smith's standing on and watching like a kind of football crowd and there's a day and age to to do the hybrid film of live-action and visual effects you gotta be able to do some shots in camera because of the nature of some of the shots that had to be done to say we're really you would be concentrating on Keano and you know fighting and it's raining in the background you had to have Smith many many many innocents but you wouldn't want to have to put them in every shot as a usual thing so I said well no or why don't we make a hole yes rather Smith sir and they looked at me like I was completing there we went through a variety of ideas and eventually arrived at some pretty photorealistic dummies you anteater why I want to put so much effort into getting the right model from doing the right work on the faces they were really like you done it was pretty successful and turned out so much better than it seemed like we were going to be able to do it beginning we've got to do a costume if this one yeah and we're gonna do this one again and this one a little bit more for me there are three different models there's grumpy there's happy and there's neutral and they made more neutrals than they made grumpies and Happy's just [Music] we're taking three head impressions of kicker weaving what we'll be doing is a combination of um pages with marks as well as dummies 100 dummies and 50 masks to be worn by actors [Music] [Music] [Music] they did a number of different tryouts a number of different materials to make the to make the market and to try and get the right time that was the original one we made that's a hard resin so this one the reaction was it looked too it looked too hard so we've since then made some out of silicon rubber the purpose of them doing a silicon screen so that when the lights run this the silicon skin will glow white like human flesh and the rain also sits different than it would just it just runs off whereas on fiberglass hood the line just tends to sit there food also got my body as well on hands and panting gel I wrap my body up in plaster bandages and I stood there for like hours you know so this is me so afters been painted will send off to the paramaker we'll put a wig on it it's been an interesting project because this team that we're doing I don't think has ever been done before I don't think anything like it has been done before we're cutting 182 wigs you've had all the wigs handmade they're all hand tight they're going to be standing in the pouring rain which makes them you know pros another element into what we have to think about or how we're thinking about doing these wigs they have to endure a heavy rain and they can't get messed up that's the trick we actually put silicone on their hair so we kept up that little front which gives him that Smith mode there to make a week for me because all my doubles were standing there beautifully with their hair staying up in the rain but my hair in the rain even with the masses of an hairspray started to just fall down on my face I so crazy it got [Music] now Department have worked out an elaborate system keeping everyone warm keeping everyone dry yeah it's a major collaboration between the art department hops apartment and costume getting everybody looking the same 60 miles 60 cars bonding weeks you know you have to mcfly everything by 100 it was 100 left hands right hands feet shoes ties tie pins cufflinks it's a big challenge because of the intensity of the rain all the time it's hard to be in the rain every day for 15 hours I seem to recall having 18 humans and 150 fiberglass dummies which they are terminated up and they were fantastic because they were all dimensionally perfect it was it was easy to deal with them they it was the 80 humans they're all six too but they're so different and some had long torso some where all legs some had extremely sloping shoulders Larry and Andy wanted to do a tracking shot at everybody's shoulder points had to meet at the moment we have the whole team you dummies this we have a real 51 and then on the road 51 and then a row of 50 51 extras we were also be wearing you go leaving our agents made look like masks and then we'll be training them on how to use the mechanism and left right turns and nods and what have you they all have handles in the back which are operated by one extra operates to you guys the heads or tilting the heads and turning this is the repair station with the turning of the heads there's a lot of wear and tear on the necks and the paint tends to rub and lift a bit so we have to repaint and seal the next let's really campaign that we use takes a day to fully dry before we pull them back into the neck mechanisms also even what really skin tight wet so it's I can't even move a capsule circulation off your arms because of the water for tea for boiling down the biggest storm you've ever seen in your life and within this master get out of all day but it's all in good fun they're quite disconcerting even to Hugo the Communists no yeah even mr. weaving himself got a bit spooked when he saw himself replicated many times same everyone is the same hue guys being very good he's he's um been very happy to have his hip molded and I think he loves looking at all these guys he loves me hmm you
