It shows. Say what you want about the rest of the movie, as well as Revolutions, but this is one of the coolest action scenes ever.

Almost makes it worthwhile to watch the trilogy with all its flaws if it means I get to watch this scene and the final Neo vs. Mr. Smith fight in the 3rd. Normally I'd stop watching after the 1st, but then I remember those two scenes.

I know there are a few haters out there for the sequels, but I am one of those that enjoys all three movies. This scene in particular is one of my favorites. When the agent jumps from the hood of the Cadillac to that other car and completely crushes it, blows me away every time. Love it.

I was watching clips of that freeway scene recently, and the thing I appreciate the most is how the "players" that are fighting on the freeway do not care about making a huge mess of cars crashing, but the good guys are the only ones that can truly get hurt.

The albino ghost twins can't really get hurt, and the Agents can't get hurt. But Morpheus, Trinity and the Keymaker definitely can. So you feel like they are taking a risk (the operator even reminds Morpheus how he always said that they were never supposed to get on the highways).

And then things start popping. And it feels like true mayhem. When Trinity is on the speedbike going against traffic, that is probably one of the greatest shots I've ever seen in an action movie. Its better than most video games.

No Michael Bay editing or shaky cam, either. They maintain those shots to see just how badass it looks.

Should have spent the same amount of time on the scene where Neo turns into a gummy man and fights off all the agents

Few thoughts on that.

  1. Despite some of the effects not dating all that we'll, it's still an incredible sequence.

  2. We all know it, but Keanu just seems like the most awesome famous person.

  3. I'd love to see what Gareth Evans could do with seven weeks and millions of dollars to shoot a chase sequence.

  4. Those twins were a little annoying.

  5. Good on Carrie-Ann Moss. Bad ass.

One thing I've never understood is the intense hate for the second movie. Granted, many of the plotlines/characters are pretty dumb, but it has 5 or so of the best choreographed fight scenes ever:

-first scene with neo + smith in the rain. short and awesome

-The teashop fight scene (super short but well executed hand-to-hand fight in a confined space)

-in the lobby of the Merovingian's palace (hand-to-weapon fight with insane wire work)

-this car sequence

-parking garage scene with the twins teleporting everywhere. SO cool

Holy shit, Carrie Ann Moss actually drove that Ducati with another person on the bike through traffic? That is INCREDIBLY badass.

They also built a fake freeway for most of the shots in the Alameda/Oakland area for that scene

The Wachowskys.....are passionate, devoted, and geniuses when it comes to crafting an action scene. If I were given the chance to speak to any director it would be them. I'd ask them: "that really intreresting camera angle, how did you think of that? How do you come up with those amazing concepts?" And talk about anime for hours because CLEARLY that's their stuff.

EDIT: No like...I lowkey want to talk to them...

there are three things you need to know about the matrix one written and directed by Lima cluesive which house key brothers it was the biggest grossing movie in Warner Brothers history - it rewrote the rule book for special effects and three the recently released Secret Matrix Reloaded has the most awesome cartridge we have ever seen you know you're off to a good start when the opening action sequence has a bike a babe and a bang my man watching them make it was extraordinary all the stuntmen that were involved and you know they had like three cars flying in the air at the same time 18 wheelers crashing through cars people on motorcycles being chased by cameramen on motorcycles I think it's pretty cool being a girl you know with with action sequences I just thought that it was uh it really drew me in you know most of the time and actually movies I'm like okay enough already but with that particular scene I was just kind of glued to the to the screen and couldn't take my eyes off of it me too I mean we'd seen the storyboards the whole thing about the matrix it's pretty much all storyboard so you can get a pretty good idea of visually what it's going to be like but when it's it's actually up there on the screen it's amazing the chase sequence took one year to plan seven weeks to shoot and last 14 minutes they built their very own mile and a half long freeway the biggest film set in movie history a construction overseen by production designer Owen Paterson a huge machine extruded concrete sections whilst the walls are sill painted plywood that could easily be cut through for emergency access everything was designed down to the last road sign after the last piece of litter down to the dead and yeah yeah in the gravel wing what's that out there oh yeah Julie yeah although the movie was filmed in Australia to save money the chase was made in the USA where it's much easier to source planty of left-hand drive cars and of course stunt drivers we were having a drinks didn't get to know each other I was there was like this group of all these young guys who were doing kung-fu and wire work and then in the back of the room there were these old cowboys and these guys were just like still big belt buckles Levi's you know looking like they're from the 50s hard boys and I was like who's that excuse me and they're like those are the drivers and I'm like ooh those stunt guys take hard hits and I just wrapped in ice I can hardly move and they take some really good hits Tim Rigby since Ralph is very much taking words hit many of the drivers use roll cages to their own specifications it's rumoured they got through 300 cars thanks to some pretty destructive maneuvers for the most life-threatening stunts Computers digitally mapped routes for the vehicles and even the drivers footwork everything else was rehearsed using an attache case full of toys everything is timed down to the last minute yeah yeah that kind of metal moving at 60 miles now you can't afford to have any mistakes one of the trickiest aspects is getting 200 extras to try and drive the other cars in a realistic looking random pattern although some did get a bit carried away didn't they Lawrence yeah one of the guys you know got really happy and took a cop took a car for a joyride came around the curve and saw one of the police cars sitting there stationary thought it was the real police and smashed up the car sadly cariann most can't be with us tonight because she's heavily pregnant but her riding of the Ducati against the flow of traffic was definitely our favorite bit and yes she did do it herself oh the chase on the bike is extraordinary it's just bananas it's pretty spectacular I mean for her was very brave I mean to ride a Ducati 996 with someone on the back with no helmet and you know and you're not a motorcycle rider it's pretty pretty full on you know the stunt coordinator are a rondelle he just started a small bike bigger bike bigger bike until funding she was on that high-performance machine Bravo and his it was great but she did a meticulous REIT was plotted with the black blocks on the road representing the outlines of computer-generated cars add in some remarkable camera angles and the sequence is frankly breathtaking come on so Keanu you're a biker boy did he have a go they'd let me sit on it but they wouldn't let me drive it around I'm lucky the others saw plenty of action carrie-anne moss laurence fishburne and the Raymond brothers all went to motion picture drivers school for three days to learn a few basic skills but why is the matrix full of Cadillacs we went to them and they said you know do you want to help us with this chase GM and they said well you know Cadillac really needs to spruce up its image a little bit and kind of do something a little hipper and younger could how about taking Cadillac in this thing and then the boys went up there went to Detroit and looked at the the new line of Cadillacs and saw the CTS and the XT and they said they kind of look matrix like anyway so let's do that now we looked at them they were only in prototype form I mean we did they didn't even really exist yet the car they had actually build them for us and what did they do with all these lovely new cars right that's the most complex shot of the chase sees a bad-guy landing on a bonnet it's the ultimate blend of old-fashioned skills and modern technology the jump is computer-generated but the carnage behind is done for real drivers hit pipe ramps that are being taped by the vehicles in front of them there's a lot of things that go on behind you you don't realize so on that kind of a shot you got lots of cameras covering lots of angles but you know I'm stuck in this car fighting Morpheus and I've got all this carnage going on behind me but when I'm filming it because I'm acting in the cameras man in front of the car you can't see what's going on you'll get the odd bit of peripheral vision and a tire bounce past you or something that explained no good job I didn't see everybody just ducked you know right that's enough about the movie fifth gear had just enough time to ask the big names what's in your gauge I ride Norton's Norton commandos really yeah I loved him for years I've been driving in a suburban I mean that's the car that you know is like a truck that's rider I have a guy drive to me cuz I'm on the phone and I'm yelling too much so I'm afraid if I'm driving myself and I what'll happen but I did I did just try to make a deal on buy one of those Maybachs the new pretty cool car I was pretty impressed with it so uh I think about maybe not the movies a big success maybe I'll I'll try running style it's real unusual blend of being bloody quick let's tap it again on that little gone 183 mile an hour vanquish is easily outgunned by more expensive rivals right
