hi everybody well I'm gonna do a different kind of video today I know there's loads and loads and loads of videos on the internet as far as cleaning a gun and getting it ready you know after you're done using it for the next time you're gonna use it and whatever so I thought well yeah what the heck I might as well do something a little different rather than a review I'll do a gun cleaning video so what we're gonna do here is we're gonna work on this this really nice one you've probably seen it in another video if you've ever seen my videos just to show that it is empty you always want to make sure it's empty before you handle it so anyways I check every time but anyhow so what we have here is my Smith & Wesson Model 19 I was at the range with it yesterday and I'm shame on me but finally getting around to cleaning it so ya supposed to I usually try to do it as soon as I get home but well had some stuff going on so so anyway so this one's been fired let me go ahead and give you a little zoom in here on the gun to show what it looks like when it's dirty so anyhow I don't know if you can see or not but around the cylinder here you've got your little burn marks around the the front part of the cylinder where the gap is between here and the forcing cone or the back into the barrel here so usually there's a flash that comes out from the side of there whenever you fire it so it creates you know a lot of junk and dirt well usually mainly gunpowder residue but you could see it's it's getting it was getting pretty dirty it wasn't fired extensively but it almost wouldn't warrant a cleaning but I figured you know what I might as well go ahead and clean it anyway I always like to make sure my firearms are kept clean oil and ready for the next time so anyway while I'm gabbing here I'll go ahead and zoom this back out to where we can see a little bit better but the the chambers on the cylinder definitely are dirty I'm sure the barrel is pretty dirty I haven't really looked down to see how bad it is just yet but I'm gonna go ahead and pretend like it's pretty bad and then just go from there just to give you a good overview of how we're gonna do this all right so we're all set so what you need are your basic utensils tools whatever you want to call them you've got your cleaning rods which I have two of them for this video which kind of makes things a little bit easier they are not expensive you can get a cleaning kit relatively relatively cheap this one here I don't even know what that means you could probably figure it out those of you who've seen this before but anyway you've got your your various brushes your uh yeah your wire brushes or in this case they're brass wire brush and then you've got your cleaning wads which I have a load of them here plus some more hiding underneath and Saida here got a few more and you know like to keep different ones different sizes this one here you'd use for a shotgun but I like to use these to kind of wipe down the outside a little bit so anyhow you need here's your lubricating oil you don't really need this so much for revolvers I prefer to use this mostly on the automatics or semi automatics - you left us and then we've got here this is what I use for cleaning out the boar and loosening up any kind of residue I also use this every once in a while this G ninety six gun treatment it cleans lubricates and protects it kind of it's like an all-in-one kind of a thing and it actually smells great has compared to the to the hops or Hoppy's or ever you want to say it it's and it's inexpensive they're available in most most firearms stores pretty nice stuff I like it it smells great I'm serious this here is what we're going to be pretty much putting around the outside of it just to just to keep it nice and lubricated and keep it from rusting so it's pretty much about it a little wire brush here I usually use this for cleaning off the forcing cone and the front and back part of the cylinder sometimes I'll even take the cylinder out today I don't think I'm going to because it's really not that dirty so otherwise I would but the less work that I have to do to the physical gun itself being as you know it's a little bit of an older gun I'd like to keep it in as good a shape as I can I don't like to take anything on or off more than I have to so but if I were you'd need a good set of gunsmithing screwdrivers which I have here by grace USA they're pretty decent they I think I got them on eBay for like 20 bucks pretty you know pretty good sized set I mean all the way up to your big boys here so you always want a good fitting screwdriver for every screw that you try to take on or put in or take out on a firearm because you don't want to ruin the heads like I've done in the past cuz you know young and um so now that I'm a little older now I've learned so getting right down to it here what we're gonna do is we're gonna like I said I'm gonna pretend that this was fired quite extensively and we're gonna just kind of start from where I usually start in this sense so what we're gonna do is I'm you know when actually I am gonna take the cylinder off just to show you how you how it works on these Smith & Wesson revolvers so what I like to do get out of here flight so anyway what I like to do block the cylinder in place and the screw that holds the cylinder in is actually this forward most one right here on the side plate I'll go ahead and give you a little bit of a zoom just to see I kind of move it up here to where you can see a little bit better but it's right here right next to the made in USA part what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna find the screwdriver that fits which I already know this one does this one fits perfectly so what I'm gonna do is I'm going to go ahead loosen this screw up then being very very careful when I'm doing it is to not let the screwdrivers slip out like that okay go ahead and pull that screw out when I set it off to the side now you're gonna turn the gun over zoom it back out a little bit more here and then what you're gonna do is are gonna pop the cylinder open and then the whole thing comes off forward now in this one I always lay it down like this because the cylinder and all it's gonna want to come out and it can be a bit of a pain because right in here there's a little it's hard to see but your best bet is to just hold the cylinder in place and then pull the actual arm itself just holding onto the cylinder like that because you don't want to scratch anything and then now your cylinders free okay with all the bits and pieces that are inside of there which we are not taking out there's really no reason to take them out at this point so there's that so now we just have the frame with the grips left over and you can't hot [ __ ] it in this state because the little pin on the inside of here where that end part goes is not depressed so you cannot [ __ ] the firearm so like a safety mechanism so anyhow let's get right to it I'm gonna set these parts aside for right now they're gonna be one of the last parts I clean so getting right to it we're gonna need one of these liar more cleaners here we're going to select the one now this one's in 357 caliber or 38 which 357 nine-millimeter is the same size so that's what we're gonna pick here we're gonna get the right one for that put that on the end of my cleaning rod here like so careful so you don't stab yourself with those they kind of hurt now the tricky part well there really isn't a tricky part to be honest with you but um I'd like to keep the firearm kind of set but you don't have to you can hold it up like this or however is most comfortable for you but I'm gonna go ahead and do it this way just so you can see what I'm doing here so you're gonna go down straight through then a bunch of stuff came out of here you didn't really see it because my stupid hand was in the way but there's a bunch of junk that came out of there you move this a little bit over this way and then maybe you can see it if I do it again there some came out the end of the barrel and then there now there's some coming through I usually run it through about three times back and forth three to four times there that's coming up pretty clean now it's not so dirty anymore so now we're gonna go ahead we're gonna take this off I'm gonna put it back in my kit here now I have another little light over here I'm gonna take a look down the end of the barrel now I always hate pointing these things at my face but unfortunately it's the only real way other than buying some stupid camera that you really don't need to get a look down the barrel so now what I'm gonna do here is I'm gonna zoom out and I'm just gonna so you're gonna see part of my face here I'm gonna take a look see down the barrel now they do make a light for this now I can see that the barrel itself is actually pretty clean it's not very shiny given the fact that you know you ran the wire brush down there but it's got most of the junk out so now we're gonna go ahead and we're gonna put on our wad whatever plunger thing I don't know what the heck you call this thing it's the thing that I put the white on for cleaning now this is a special one where because they have these ones too which I'm actually going to use in a minute so you can see how it's work how it works but I'm going to use this for cleaning the cylinder so I'm gonna set that to the side for now but right now we're gonna focus on this one so what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna get one of my wives here and I like to use the hops number nine the bore cleaner and what I do is I just take this your hands are gonna get dirty hold it on there till it gets pretty soaked about like that and then I'm gonna tip the gun up put that over the end there take the cleaning rod and then we're gonna push that down in real slow at first and then we're gonna go I'm gonna put my hand down the other end here down inside so it's not to push it all the way through so that the the patch don't come off the wad I like to run that down through there a couple of times like that now you can see dirt and stuff coming out of there get that off of there let me take another look down here okay that's looking pretty doggone good so far now we're gonna run a dry patch through and I can get my fingers to work here yeah the same thing patch over then and like it we're gonna do the exact same thing basically just in and out this is getting rid of any other dried on residual stuff okay that one came out pretty dirty as well let's go ahead and do another one okay and I want it to come out to where it's pretty much about clean on the end of the patch okay I'm gonna go ahead and just flip this one around and use the other side because we're getting there now it's getting pretty clogged on clean in there now that's not too shabby it's getting there you know let me use one of these other ones because it's just about done oh I got one right here doesn't really matter what size but this one works too just to kinda clean it up a little bit there it goes that one came out almost perfectly clean so now once again I'm gonna take another look down the barrel that is pretty doggone perfect nice and shiny inside of there now let me see if I can get to where you can actually see down the barrel to understand what it's supposed to look like oh but give me one second here I'm gonna go ahead this is the first one I used still got some of the bore cleaner on it I'm just gonna wipe off the muzzle here real quick give that a good little wipe down because there's usually some stuff on the end there blast out and powder residue yeah that came out even dirtier good good good good wipe it off with this clean one there now I'm gonna see if I get this lined up to where you can see down the barrel and get some light in here to where it'll be a little easier for you to see so bear with me there now you see what we got there see how nice and shiny it is in there that's what you want to see no residue no dirt no dust no little pieces of stuff in there you want it nice and shiny just like that that's a really nice boar alright so now we're gonna do is we're gonna start cleaning off the inside of the of where the cylinder well is so I always like to you know kind of let me zoom in again I always like to really get it nice and clean so I'll really brush out the inside of here pretty good and this is all brass so you ain't gonna hurt nothing now they're a little bit more cylinder meets up and get the top you know where the forcing column is it usually gets kind of mucked up in there getting it out of the camera view here but anyway like that and then around the forcing cone I like to go up and down a little bit on each side trying to get this to where you can actually see what I'm doing here and then I go across the barrel Thomas Rowe all the way up and down the forcing cone here try to get in there use a little part if you have to now I usually go a little overboard on my cleaning because well you know these firearms are they're collectible they're worth something their intrinsic value monetary value or personal or whatever you know and it's okay to give you know to do a little bit on the on the bluing there it isn't gonna hurt anything as long as you don't do it real hard I always like to clean up a little bit around here then take that one patch that I had here just kind of wipe it down a little bit help clean some of the junk out of there a little hard to reach places like that you can just kind of do something like this didn't work exactly how I wanted it to there that's okay well know whatever you see where I'm getting that with that so pardon my voice there for some reason my throat's all full of stuff today probably just allergies but then I'll wipe it down on the inside of here real good kind of clean it up best I can around the side back behind where the cylinder is let's wake that down real good if that all cleaned off down inside the ridges here on the top of the site side here that okay I just hope you can see what I'm doing here because I'm trying to pay attention to the camera and to this cuz you know I don't have a camera man ain't Richard so anyway okay that's looking pretty good cuz there again I didn't really fire it a whole lot before this but it was enough no usually every time I fired I clean it well I say usually but actually it really honestly is every single time I fired I clean it it's important Plus this you know this was an investment this was expensive you know guns aren't cheap so anyhow again I'm just making sure that I'm getting everything good as I can get it up top here this nope then wiping down the outside this stuff evaporates rather quickly so it's a glitz solvent works really well I do like this hop bees or whenever I liked is call it hobbies because it just sounds funny I like Hopalong Cassidy wow that's pretty old well anyway so I always try to make a point of wiping down the trigger itself all right so now after wiping down the rest of the frame here the barrel around the site down there gets that's pretty good now I'm the muzzle again okay and see I almost knocked over my bottle of stuff yeah good wipe down the back back strap here hammer back to the site that's pretty darn good if I do say so myself then you can see all the the brown or brown gray dirt junk that came out of there so but it that's only fire in it oh maybe probably about a half a box so it's probably bout twenty five rounds give or take all right so now what we're gonna do is we're just gonna kind of move that over for a minute just kind of out of the way and we're gonna concentrate on the cylinder to begin with what I'm gonna go ahead and do here is since I'm already using this one I'm gonna go ahead and grab this one now this one here has a slot in there then what you do is you some people fold it into a triangle I usually leave it into squares and then do that and then I'll kind of stick that down in there get that soaked up pretty good no cuz like I said this stuff you get is wipe off you know it dries fairly quickly so then what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna go down through each of those yeah see how dirty that god already I'm gonna go through each of these here like this give them the ones through okay there's six of them run a little back and then I'll turn it 90 degrees to do the other way do it one more time this is just overkill but just making sure that everything's gonna be good turn it over then I'll usually run it through one more time through each of the chambers oh that's so down real nice and good there all right mmm now we're gonna pull that out of there and then we're gonna wipe the whole cylinder off make sure to concentrate on the front part there the last time I cleaned this it was really really dirty because I fired probably about 300 rounds that day and I had to actually use my wire brush up around the edge of the of the cylinder they are the front part of the cylinder to clean off the residue that was left on there from firing the burn marks and stuff but it's okay as long as you use that brass wire brush everything will turn out just fine give it a little dab there and it's kind of hard to clean in the in the locks here but I just use my fingernail kind of force that down in there clean those out because those can get dirty in there too and it depends on what kind of cleaning stuff you use as well because sometimes I've used some cleaners where they actually gum up after a while then they get like a film in there I actually had to really clean those out the last time because it was so bad all right now I'm gonna get a dry one here how does who's one of these old ones I want to wipe off the front of this here might actually just usually use my rag here this is a good cotton cloth this is actually a a car cleaning cloth these work wonderful for guns as well gosh you can see I've used this one quite a bit but the cool part is you can just run them into the washer that's what I do put him on a good heavy cleaning cycle and they come out pretty doggone clean okay so that's at least wiped most of them and off now I'm gonna grab this now this isn't too bad I really don't even have to do this but just for the purposes of showing you can clean off the front of the cylinder with this just give it a couple good passes here across each of the chambers get rid of any of that residual stuff that's on there when you reposition here so you can actually see what I'm doing just my camera just a tad there we go now you can see how about that again just getting down and dirty with it here okay that's pretty darn good if I say so myself now we'll take that wet one again like that down clean off the peg a little here flip around to the other side this actually doesn't get too dirty up in here little dabs to here brushes getting stuck to my rag okay and then while I'm doing that I'll zoom this back out a little bit okay then I'll wipe off the front here in front of the cylinder and there she is nice and shiny and clean all right now there's another part of this we gotta clean I'm gonna set that over here out of the way and that's this part and again this here I do like to put a little oil on and I'll show you how I do it but again we're gonna use this weapon this what wad right here that off real good sometimes I'll actually run a patch down through here but I don't need to this time but you can use like a regular like this thing you know and you can actually run it through you can actually use a smaller one that's in here and my kit this is for 22s this actually works perfect if you put a nice good wide on there spray it down with some stuff and boy you can get that pretty darn clean and then this is the part that you actually see when it's on the gun kind of focusing on the little creases and areas that you see cuz I'm picky okay out of my way again cap back on this guy here cuz we're done with you then wipe everything off again you don't necessarily have to wipe this off because this stuff kind of evaporates on its own but it's always a good idea and now go ahead and wipe down the frame I'm always wiping down the frame while I'm cleaning just to make sure that gets rid of the rest of that solvent because we're actually gonna put a little just a little tiny bit of oil all over the frame here like that make sure polish were that logo is on the side there it looks nice and pretty you can tell I'm quite particular about this one this is one of my one of my babies right here okay now we're gonna put it back together but first you got to put a little bit of oil on here so I'm gonna take some of this I'm gonna use this this time some of this lubricating oil from Hoppy's I probably sound like an idiot using that word but anyway so what I'm gonna do here let me just show you how I do it I'll zoom in nice and tight so you can see okay so I just put a little drop here then I'll take my finger and then just wipe it all around on there and then whatever's left on my finger I put on the bottom post here what fits into the gun itself don't need a lot just a little tiny bit like that finger off here okay and we're gonna do the back up just a tad a lot of zooms going on in this video I don't normally do that alright so now we're ready to put all of this back on the frame close this up some of that oil off the top of that sorry about taking the extra time here but you want to do that especially on a firearm such as this one so anyhow it's gonna go back in the gun like this and then if you remember this part sticks out the front because that's the back side where your bullets would go okay so that you know that wasn't in view there but now it is so anyhow so like I showed you before this goes in like this okay and then it'll lock into place like that alright well before I do that I'm gonna set the cylinder here I'm gonna start this on here and it kind of fits into there a little bit then we're gonna push that in like that okay and then we're gonna go ahead and lock it lock the cylinder in I'm gonna flip it over I'm gonna zoom back in show you this screw then I always try to make sure that there's no or anything on the screw when I put it back in I'm gonna stick that in there now this screw does not need to be super tight because I've noticed that if you tighten it too much it makes the cylinder hard to open so we're gonna go ahead I'm gonna tighten that up and just snug it pretty good there okay like that now we're gonna test the cylinder okay Falls open nice and easy it's not too difficult it's got a little bit of play there that's the cylinder moving but yeah that's nice that's good that's just how I like it all right so now back out we go very slowly all right so now pretty much done the only thing I'm gonna do now is I said we're gonna put a little co2 oil on this so what I do is I'm gonna take actually the rag that this is sitting on this is my oil rag we're gonna use this now I know I didn't use this at all I don't like to use this on this gun for many reasons it really doesn't matter I'm just more particular on this one so I use the other products so what I'm gonna do here is just take this rag hold it in my hand and then I'm gonna kinda give it a light spritz here and then I'm gonna wipe down the whole gun and you'll see how the oil just naturally works its way on that this is what I do before I put it away okay this is one of this is the very last step and make sure to wipe it all down get around the muzzle making sure that I remember where the heck oily part of the rag is it's kind of important then pay attention to some of the little areas in there whole thing everything then just kind of dab it on the hammer there because it's got sessions on it and I want it to get down in there on the back strap here and it's okay to wipe on the grips matter of fact I kind of like to do that because it kind of deepens the tone of the grips a little bit I don't like them when they're too bright I'm you know to each their own now to make sure that you get all the cylinder I like to rotate it around a little bit okay front okay and that just about does it now with this rag it kind of leaves little bits of fuzz here and there but this one does not I need to flip it over and then just a final wipe down with this because this gets rid of the little fuzzies because this is a good like I said this is a really good ring I got several of these this came with a cleaning kit for a car which I think I mentioned before but yeah whatever so what if I repeat myself you probably forgot anyway I know I would have buy no but anyhow alright then again one more time give the cylinder a couple turns wipe it down and now we have a completely clean firearm and it's got a little light coating of oil I've probably wiped most of it off but I like to I don't like to keep it super oiled just enough to get the job done so anyway that's about it I mean you know like I say it's nice and clean pretty shiny it's kind of hard to tell but you know maybe the camera does it a little bit more justice than I do but uh there it is in all its glory model 19 and yeah alright everybody something I forgot to show in the original video but I'm gonna go ahead and add this in to the mix here if ever I'm putting away one of these guns for say an extended period of time or if I feel like I'm not gonna be using it for a little while one of the other things I like to do is I like to run a patch down through the end with some oil on it so I'll just go ahead and show it to your real quest here even though I had already finished up the video as far as the recording process but I'll go ahead and show you so basically what I'll do is I'll use the regular Hoppy's lubricating oil here I always like to put a little bit dab right on here like that there you go just kind of let that set in there does a pretty good job of soaking through these patches then I'll go ahead and do it to you this way like that and it's pretty much the same principle as the other stuff using this particular one here and then just running the patch down through like so again holding the back like that and that's all there is to that just to show you how I like to make sure that you know the inside of the barrel is nice and lubricated so that way you know it doesn't rust down on the inside of the barrel I'm just wiping off the excess oil from the muzzle here and then gonna wipe it down where I had to touch it here and then that's about it so now I go ahead and thanks for watching you know just make sure you know you dispose of your used things a little bit this is actually a whatever doesn't matter you don't care but uh this stuff here and you just throw that right in the garbage so that's about it like I said these tools and stuff like this they're they're relatively inexpensive I mean I think this kit here this little bitty kit was probably maybe about nine bucks you can buy patches they're pretty cheap too they run a couple bucks you know at the gun store you can order them online you can get them anywhere but I always try to stick with these these are about you know I don't know how big they are I don't have a ruler handy they're probably about inch and a half square and then these here about you know about three two and a half yeah two and a half square and then like I said these I use sometimes for just some outdoor cleaning and whatever but they're actually for shotguns so but anyway well thanks everybody for watching I mean I really appreciate you coming out to see me and you know if there's any other videos that you'd like you know as far as cleaning or maintaining or you know some kind of work that you want to do or you know I'm not exactly a gunsmith for sure you know I I've done little light work here and there as far as you know make it modifications to some of my my 1911's but I haven't really done anything extensive but I mean you know I'm here to help I'm here for you guys and you know I Joe and I am part of my stutter there I do enjoy doing this it's really fun for me and it's just a blast it really is you know it there's nothing like owning a piece of history in a way especially something like this you know this one this is from 1980 there's a video on it I'll put a link in the description for you all to see so anyway just notice more trash here but anyway alright everybody that like I said thanks again for watching y'all have yourselves a really nice day enjoy yourselves get out have fun god bless and have a good one take it easy bye
