Something about Cornell's vocals on this song convince me that he is the world's greatest rock vocalist. I honest put him over Plant or Mercury. His voice is unapologetically unique and powerful.
And fuck man, that riff. Such a fierce riff. I love the Rage feel to this as Morello chops that shit up.
Audioslave was good. I’ve slept on them up until recently. Also gotta love rage. Tom’s style works amazingly in both.
Great album
I love Audioslave and even like Chris Cornell more (Soundgarden is the band of the 90s along with NIN in my opinion) but holy shit calling Audioslave Alt Metal is just straight up wrong on so many levels.
I saw Soundgarden with my then-12 year-old son two weeks before Chris passed. This was the show in Indianapolis that Taylor Momsen spoke about after he died.
Like Robin Williams, Chris Cornell was an extraordinarily talented artist - not just good, but a legend in his own time. Like Williams, Cornell suffered severe depression - despite having a life without want and worldwide recognition and respect.
And like Williams, Cornell had a Christian faith that didn’t follow the path of Bible-thumpers and people throwing stones at glass houses. It was more in line with Christ’s appeal for compassion and forgiveness of fellow man, less about mysticism and threats of damnation, and certainly unafraid to be procactive or address what some might find taboo.
This song - and several on this debut album from Audioslave - touch on these themes. I hope the poor bastard got some answers in whatever lies beyond. And “in His House”, I hope he is still wailing like a motherfucker, albeit with a voice that we just can’t understand in life. It will make the afterlife that much better for everyone who we have lost.
No one sings like you anymore.
