Damn, if you were heavy in the Seattle scene in 90's you lost a lot of friends early.
Last I heard he was sober. Did a relapse take his life?
Blackhole Sun" had a lot of personal meaning for me - in basic training at Ft. Knox, it was as you might imagine, difficult. Imagine constant stress and exertion in Kentucky summer, never alone, always training, exercising, or far few too hours a night, unconscious. No outside reading permitted at all, nothing to drink but water ... utter privation.
Then imagine getting called into the Drill Sergeant's office at the end of a sweltering August day. "Private. I understand today is your birthday." This is bad, you never want the drill sergeants ever noticing you, really. There's no good attention, the best is to just slip under the radar neither flying too high or falling too low. At least Drill Sergeant Eastwood's office was air conditioned. And there was an even a radio on!
"Yes Drill Sergeant."
"How old are you, private?"
"21 Drill Sergeant."
"Bet you'd like a nice cold beer."
Man. There's no good answer to this question. Well, I'm going to go with honesty. "Yes, Drill Sergeant."
"Too bad. Drop and give me one for every year."
At this point, 21 pushups just wasn't that big a deal. So I start, and he gets up to stand over me and watch. He was a short guy with an impressive porn-stache. He was wound tight and quivered with pent up energy. He was a great runner and an even better shot with anything that put lead down range. He didn't get mad too often, didn't shout, but at the same time, he was more than willing to make us suffer without ever raising his voice. Like a snake, coiled to strike.
"All right private, when you're done, file the paperwork on my desk. Then turn off the radio and AC before you leave and lock up."
And then he just left for the evening. Left me alone in his air conditioned office, with a radio. It was an act of generosity, a birthday present without calling it that. It only took a few minutes to file the paperwork. As I was doing it, Blackhole Sun came on the radio. It was a moment of comfort, privacy and calm in 16 weeks of Hell. It was profoundly happy. That song is tied to that moment for me, inextricably.
Chris Cornell is a part of one of my happiest memories. May he never be forgotten.
The notes he could hit with his voice were just incredible. RIP Chris Cornell
Anyone else remember Beavis and Butthead making fun of this video? I was 10 and loved soundgarden lol
RIP Chris Cornell. Dude had an awesome voice.
I grew up in a Christian school very sheltered with no exposure to good music basically. The first time I heard this song I was 15 and on the phone late one night with my boyfriend (now husband) - I heard it playing in the background and I asked what song is that? Because I had never heard any song so hauntingly beautiful. To this day it's one of my favorite songs and always gives me chills.
I had a friend I met through a modding community whose handle was BlackHoleSon. Met when I was 15 or 16, would fuck around the internet and chat for hours on end. He got me through some of the toughest times of my life, I credit him as being one of the reasons I'm still alive today.
Unfortunately we didn't keep in touch very well after high School because neither of us had steam access anymore. He killed himself in October of 2014... I just wish I could've thanked him for what he did for me, and tell him what he meant to me. RIP Chris Cornell. RIP Sebastian "BlackHoleSon" Harris.
