[Music] so [Music] analyzing the outfits and confessions of a teenage drama queen released in 2004 confessions of a teenage drama queen is a lighthearted story about a teen girl who moves from new york city to the suburbs of new jersey putting a damper on her great dream to one day become a famous actress on broadway as a big fish in a small pond she has to deal with finding her place in a new school while also maintaining the false image she's cultivated for herself starring lindsay lohan as the so-called drama queen and megan fox as the mean girl it's essentially the most 2000s movie ever made and in spite of its relatively low critical rating i personally consider confessions of a teenage drama queen a cult classic that is a must watch for any fashion lover costumed by david c robinson of zoolander and the lizzie mcguire movie fame i think it has some of the most interesting and varied wardrobe choices for a teen comedy that i've ever seen and the movie features pretty much every early 2000s fashion trend you can think of from the prep to the princess in today's video we'll be looking at the costumes of the three lead female characters from confessions of a teenage drama queen each of the girls has a unique look that perfectly represents their character and also makes for some pretty amazing 2000s fashion inspiration let's get into it carla santini played by the ever amazing megan fox in one of her earliest film roles carla santini is the school's queen bee she's rich she's beautiful and most importantly she's ruthless carla santini drives me insane don't even say that two of her nannies were institutionalized she was so mean to callie stevenson her family had to move to cleveland she's beautiful she's popular she's rich in kindergarten she used to bite the heads off dolls when we meet carla she does the classic mean girl move assessing the competition and whether or not they'll be a threat and in typical villain fashion offers the potential usurper a place by her side but of course ranking beneath her she doesn't really have your potential now does she i just want to let you know that if you're careful you could be chilling with us chilling with you is what i've always dreamed of carla's introductory outfit perfectly represents her upbringing social status and personality everything about her is utterly enviable she's what every 2000s teen girl wanted to be carla doesn't have a hair out of place her french tips are perfectly manicured and she is both a j'adore dior t-shirt and a tiffany toggle necklace in other words the girl's got money with the addition of the black leather jacket and the low-hanging belt that completely ignores the functionality of her belt loops this outfit is basically what gen z thinks 2000's fashion looks like as the most popular girl in school she understandably has a group of loyal followers the karen and gretchen to her regina and their outfits reveal to the audience how controlling and powerful carla is robin and marcia perfectly coordinate with carla all the time yet never come close to stealing the spotlight considering how outlandish lola's outfits are it's no wonder carla felt threatened you don't want to go making friends for the wrong sort i can help you there i think i can tell the wrong sort for myself thanks when carla is rebuffed by lola likely for the first time in her life as a spoiled daddy's girl she sets out to make lola regret it making sure to look absolutely fabulous while doing so when the girls are getting ready for gym class we get a small glimpse at how carla manages to stand out in a crowd even when everyone is dressed the same as anyone who's been to high school knows quickly altering your gym clothes to be even slightly cuter is a must whether that meant rolling up the waistband of your shorts to make them shorter or tying the back of your shirt to make it more form-fitting in carla's case she slightly rolled the sleeves to create a slightly cuter silhouette but of course lola has hers rolled up even further and i also find it interesting that at this moment both she and lola have very similar hairstyles perhaps symbolic of how deep down both girls just want the same thing to be noticed at the school audition for eliza rocks a contemporary take on the play pygmalion lola manages to impress everyone with a rendition of one of siddhartha's songs leaving carla extremely put out annoyed that someone had the nerve to go up against her and actually did a good job at it this is when carla's confidence in her position begins to falter carla is wearing her jador dior t-shirt once again which i actually think is a mistake as the result of a hectic filming schedule because let's be real that girl would never wear something more than once but we could also say it's her getting frazzled by lola's presence it's up to personal interpretation she has on a baby blue denim jacket with matching jeans and the color really makes her eyes pop megan fox should wear baby blue more often just as before marcia is dressed in a similar color and silhouette the perfect sidekick when the cast list is announced carla arrives in a fitted denim suit set with white trim herlocky is in a complimentary outfit a conservative and plain blue wrap dress carla's look is equal parts trendy and mature a teen's take on a power suit as if she's dressing for the job she wants but it doesn't work instead of getting the leading role of eliza she winds up with the less glamorous part of mrs higgins instead but boy oh boy does she put on a brave face doing her best to not let lola have the upper hand and i honestly applaud her for it i'll show you what it's like to be in my school is that a threat absolutely lola and ella come across carla in an arcade dance battle decked out in what i believe is a tan juicy couture velour tracksuit with white puma easy rider sneakers the entire look is basically how the 2000's did athleisure and i actually think it'd still be cute today i wasn't able to enjoy the tracksuit trend the first time around but you'd best believe i'm going to use their current comeback to relive my tween dreams when you look at the two girls outfits side by side you can spot some of their biggest differences lola isn't afraid to stay true to her new york roots whereas carla looks like the picture-perfect version of an upper-class suburban teen the scene where lola and carla duke it out via dance is perhaps one of the most hilarious moments in the film but it does make me yearn for a simpler time the brilliance of the scene is that it is symbolic of how both girls perceive success and power with each faltering physically when they're not able to overtake the other verbally marcia and robin are once again in similar outfits both wearing tracksuits and tiffany toggle charms considering they're able to wear enough designer items to keep up with carla i'd assume these girls are pretty wealthy when we next see carla ready to flaunt her sid arthur tickets right in lola's face she and the rest of her clique are completely decked out in burberry during the early 2000s the british brand saw a huge spike in popularity with the rich and famous in america and their distinctive burberry check was seen as a status symbol worldwide as the leader carla is wearing the most burberry with a burberry skirt hat watch boots and tote bag my mind reels at how much this entire outfit must have cost but weirdly i do think it'd still work today minus the fedora the simplicity of the top actually plays nicely with the neutral colors of the burberry check and i actually think these pieces individually could be really versatile marcia the sidekick we've seen the most often is wearing almost an exact copy of carla's outfit but inverted where carla is wearing black she's wearing the burberry check and vice versa meanwhile robin is wearing simple pinstriped pants a must-have item in the 2000s with a burberry belt and matching hat both girls also have their own designer bags coach for marcia and gucci for robin overall i'm kind of obsessed with the group's entire look and there's no better way to say i have money and you don't at the mall carla's decked out in an all-white ensemble that practically screams i'll never have to work a day in my life and i love the juxtaposition of what seems like such an angelic look to someone who's giving off very devilish energy once again marcia is matching with her pink top matching carla's tote bag exactly in an often missed outfit where carla and marcia taunt lola with the upcoming siddhartha concert carla is wearing a triple five soul hoodie and a denim miniskirt originating in the lower east side triple five seoul was considered a new york streetwear brand at the time so it's actually pretty cool that carla is wearing something from the label it sort of implies that just like lola she also has an interest in fashion but instead of going vintage she goes designer while rehearsing for the musical carla is wearing yet another athleisure look this time a pair of black sweats with a baby blue panel that matches her hoodie carla seems to wear this color often when she's trying to make a good impression on miss begoli as seen with her audition outfit perhaps she thinks pastels make her look less aggressive when we see carla again hopping out of a town car to go into the sid arthur after party she looks positively phenomenal the black tube dress has a rhinestone trim and she's carrying a black feather boa are you ready for a controversial fashion take i think feather boas need to make a comeback but a more elevated polished version kind of like in this movie not the kind that most of us grew up with that fell apart after an hour and made you break out into hives this outfit is interesting in that it's clearly the most mature of any outfit we've seen carla in so far as though she's trying to appear older than she really is which would make sense considering this party is filled with celebrities and as we come to find out she is a fan of stew wolves i also like that they've done something different with her hair for the most part it's been straight so it's cool to see a more edgy nighttime going out look when they go to school the following day carla sticks to her guns once again just as she did when it came to the cast list instead of admitting defeat she decides to lie insisting that she'd never seen lola or ella at the party branding them as losers and liars can you believe her well if it isn't the great pretender i mean what do you do do you just make all this up as you go along you saw us there no i didn't liar you know that's what you are you're a liar no she's crying the baby unlike her other outfits which are typically balanced out with some white carla's outfit here is all black a full-on commitment to her role as the villain it still looks like it would exist in her closet but compared to everything else she's worn it's far less show stopping as the theater production waits to see if lola will show up carla is waiting around in the dressing room in a pair of pink pants and a matching patterned shirt like her other pastel outfits we can understand that carla is attempting to create a good impression in front of miss begoli the look is youthful unassuming and almost childish but we as the audience know better when we see carla and eliza's red dress ready to take on the role it looks a little bit different and not just because they're altering it for carla's body it looks exactly the same but somehow different when lola takes the dress from the drama room it clearly has sleeves but when they're on their adventure in the city she tears it and as a result she removes the sleeves entirely wouldn't the missing sleeves confirm lola's story that she'd taken it and end this whole debacle a minor plot hole in an otherwise perfect movie i don't really have much else to say about this dress in carla's section but i'll circle back to it in lola's all you need to know for right now is that it is one of my all-time favorite red dresses in film once the play begins with carla playing the small part of mrs higgins we can see that she is absolutely livid hardly able to hide her disdain for lola even when reciting her lines out of all of the people on stage she probably looks the most like one in a high school theater production a bad wig a generic gray dress that's probably been used for several other characters and heavy costume jewelry she's lost the battle and for once she looks ordinary well as ordinary as megan fox can look after the play carla hosts a celebratory cast party at her house her dress is very similar to the one we saw her wear to the sid arthur after party featuring a black feather detail and a body hugging silhouette while red dresses tend to be used as a shorthand for a promiscuous or flirtatious woman they can also be symbolic of scandal and there's nothing more scandalous than having a world famous rock star tell your entire school that you're a dirty liar with the addition of the black tights and stilettos this honestly looks like something fran fine would wear in the nanny while in the real world i'd want someone like carla to have a bit more comeuppance i love that lola winds up forgiving her with the two girls passively putting their differences aside because this movie pretty much ends right after carlo learns her lesson we don't really get to see a fashion transformation that is representative of character growth but that doesn't make her any less of an icon also can we just take a moment to acknowledge how absolutely gorgeous megan fox looks in this movie and she was only 16. truly one of the most perfect faces put to screen ella girard lola's best friend ella is a soft-spoken sweet naive girl with a fear of breaking the rules i can't lie if we go i just know something is gonna go wrong and i'm gonna die and my parents are gonna find out the two girls first meet at the bike racks where they each show off their wicked collection of sid arthur merch and memorabilia in contrast to both lola and carla ella's wardrobe is far simpler with no better description for it than what carla says derisively look at her she dresses like a politician's wife with the hair in the shoe she's so random and what about those glasses they are so ten minutes ago with the matching brown pants and blazer with this ill-fitting pink button up i couldn't think of an outfit worse for teen girl but that's the point right it's also important to note that this is the one and only time we see ella wear these glasses as weeks pass we learned that ella is a well-off suburbanite with conservative parents who aren't particularly fond of lola and her family never a fun situation to be in why doesn't your mother like me she likes you she just thinks you're a little strange my parents are square ella continues dressing simply wearing ill-fitting blue jeans and a pink top she wears this color often and i wonder if it's something her parents continue to buy for her as a way of keeping her as their baby girl during gym ella's uptight nature is further solidified when we see that she hasn't altered her uniform in the slightest always a stickler for the rules i have wondered before if ella hadn't been a siddhartha fan would she and lola have even wound up as friends what do you think when lola arrives at school early hoping to see the cast list ella comes with her running and jumping as fast as she can it's a sweet moment because it shows that the usual ella the person who would never run in the halls or stand up against carla is willing to do so for lola this also marks the point where we're finally starting to move into acceptable outfit territory as usual ella is wearing a pink top but with a matching skirt this time and by pairing it with a denim jacket and platform sandals the look is very sweet and feminine in comparison to the trousers and button-ups we've seen her in so far the outfit is nowhere near lola or carla's level of eye-catching but it's definitely an improvement like lola ella reacts to the news of sid arthur's breakup dramatically showing up to school the next day in an all-black morning outfit considering the clashing patterns i'm inclined to think that ella doesn't actually own much black clothing and as a result just used what she could find at home when she and lola go to the arcade the two girls are wearing similar colors lola in a bright saturated blue and ella in a dark navy we'll start to see the two girls wearing matching colors more and more often showing the growth of their friendship as well as how they're influencing one another not just in style but in personality while carla is rubbing her concert tickets in the girls faces ella is mostly quiet still afraid of truly standing up to her but she finally manages to pluck up the courage to say a simple comeback absolutely i'll be there with the hot pink pants pink top and green sweater with a flower on it she kinda looks like a toddler we've gotta get this girl out of pink and into some funkier colors asap overall this look and many others look awkward on her and she doesn't seem to be comfortable wearing them which makes a great point she doesn't feel comfortable in her own skin let alone her own clothes when she and lola run off to the mall to try and buy tickets to see sid arthur they're both wearing green with ella wearing a light green polo and jeans it's nice to see her in something other than pink for once but i'm pretty sick of the collared shirts it is interesting to see how green often makes an appearance when she's being a touch more rebellious back at lola's house we see ella in almost the exact same outfit but with a pink shirt this time you'll also notice that the pattern on her jeans matches a jacket she wore previously so it's cool to see how the character utilizes different sets in her wardrobe during the scene ella essentially has a panic attack freaking out about lying to her parents and potentially getting in trouble considering this outfit is exactly like one she's worn earlier when she was still a meek and quiet person it's not at all surprising that she reverts back into that personality we see ella in more renditions of her standard look pants and some kind of collared shirt here we see the return of the light green polo but with matching striped pants instead of jeans and here we see her in a pair of brown trousers with a light blue top overall these outfits are boring and i can't wait to see ella find her confidence and her strength because honey these outfits aren't doing anything for you when the two girls board the train to new york ella is wearing my favorite outfit of hers so far with the long navy skirt argyle top and baker's boy cap she looks like she's about to play nine holes of golf back in 1930. with the addition of all the bright colors we can really tell that this is a turning point for ella's character she's never worn anything remotely like this before and comparatively has never done anything like this either and look they're matching again in typical 2000's movie fashion we get a quick and cute montage of the two girls getting ready for the concert awkwardly trying to do their hair and makeup in the tiny train bathroom when they have their big reveal in front of ella's parents it's a sweet moment where her parents seem to see her for who she truly is the dress deep purple with a drop waist and fringe is clearly 1920s inspired and ella's curls seem to be purposely replicating the short bob of that time period she even has a matching beaded handbag it's very chic i also think it's a funny coincidence that actress allison pill winds up playing zelda fitzgerald and midnight in paris years later because she looks almost exactly the same as she does here oh and here's a fun fact ella's dress it's actually lola's we see her pull it out earlier in the movie after a whole lot of drama lola and ella finally make it to the after party official guests of stew wolves because the girls are soaking wet stew offers them his bedroom and a fresh change of clothes ella winds up wearing a pair of jean shorts knee-high converse a graphic tee with a snake on it and a metallic cap because the outfit belongs to stew it's understandably more punk rock than anything we've seen her wear before we get to see her be her most assertive in this scene telling lola never to lie to her again or their friendship is over she's got a little bite now get it because of the snake when they return to school ella expresses delight at being grounded likely for the first time in her life ella's blue and white dress again matches lola's outfit but she's able to hold her own now the dress still looks like something she'd realistically wear notice the collar but with the flattering shape and interesting pattern it looks far more fun than her previous outfits having finally found her individual style we can see that ella has found a sense of confidence in herself totally unafraid to talk back to carla and even telling her she has nothing to prove to her i don't have anything to prove to these people nor do you ella this is no time for your newfound personality ella's outfit when she comes to fetch lola is my favorite outfit of hers in the whole movie and i wish we'd gotten to see her in a well-tailored suit more often it also shows how important wearing something that's the right size is she looks instantly more polished and fashionable than she did in any of her other pants the little neck scarf is a nice touch as well considering we've seen lola wear scarves in various ways throughout the film ella's picked up a few tricks the moment is one of both strength and vulnerability with ella telling her friend that she needs to get it together and get to the play there are people counting on her at carla's party ella wears another dress this time with a deep neckline and drawings of a seaside town it's a sweet look that calls back to ella's supposed politician's wife aesthetic from the beginning of the film but elevated with the addition of pearls and a flipped out bob i do wish we'd seen her in another great suit but this works too it's always fun watching a character discover their personal style because it tends to be a reflection of that character learning to accept themselves and i just love that for ella lola step the heroine of our tale the movie begins in a fantasy sequence where lola imagines a romanticized version of her life in new york she bids farewell to her mother and sisters while she remains in the city overjoyed to finally be free in this first fantasy sequence lola's dressed as audrey hepburn as holly golightly with the awning of her hotel resembling a tiffany's jewelry box and owed to the movie breakfast at tiffany's this sequence reveals lola's more dramatic nature and love for acting as well as her habit of ignoring reality in favor of her imagination you'll notice that in the various fantasy sequences lola's bottle cap necklace takes on a different appearance in this case looking like pearls really driving home the holly golightly imagery you'll also spot a louis vuitton murakami monogram mini speedy bag in the fantasy but in real life lola never wears any designer items besides revealing her wish to be independent the fantasy also shows her innate desire for more material objects and wealth you have to wonder if maybe she could have been friends with carla when she leaves new york for new jersey she wears an outfit that is the epitome of grumpy teen on top of her i heart new york shirt that no self-respecting new yorker would ever wear she's layered a mesh top that creates a somewhat edgy appearance on one wrist she has a leather cuff and on the other a stack of black jelly bracelets must have accessories for any alternative teen in the 2000s we also briefly see her in a black veil mourning her departure and it's absolutely perfect this outfit reveals how lola dresses for every occasion and uses her wardrobe not only as a way to garner attention but to express her inner feelings she's upset with her mother's decision to move and what better way to let out that frustration than by making herself look as gloomy as possible while giving her mother no choice but to be reminded of new york every time she looks at her as she's setting up her bedroom plastering a larger-than-life poster of stew wolf on her wall lola wears what one might consider a typical at-home comfy outfit a t-shirt and gray sweats but the yellow silk robe adds a touch of sophistication and fashion to the otherwise plain outfit it's interesting to see how lola adds little bits of drama to her life even in the quiet moments on her first day of school lola wears an outfit i remember loving as a kid but now it makes my brain go huh she's got on gold flared pants a weird fringe belt a puffy sheer top and a head wrap the outfit seems to have its roots in the boho chic and glam rock subcultures but i'm also getting some lawrence of arabia vibes and considering this wouldn't be the first time we've seen lola take inspiration from a movie i have to assume it's on purpose the outfit immediately winds up drawing attention to lola making her stick out like a sore thumb with many characters in the background staring at her as she goes about her day because lola has grand aspirations of becoming an actress calling herself a legend in the making it wouldn't surprise me if she purposely picked out clothes that would garner a reaction you probably shouldn't draw so much attention to yourself in case you haven't noticed i like the attention chill however in spite of how outlandish the outfit may seem if we look at the color palette it's relatively muted in comparison to many of her other outfits throughout the film so perhaps this is lola dressing down when she goes to ella's house the two girls have a small spat when lola discovers that ella's parents have a negative idea about her mother lola's shirt in the scene features a print of marxist revolutionary che guevara whose image became a symbol of innovation change and hope perhaps foreshadowing how lola is going to change ella's world with the inclusion of the military pants and jacket i also wonder if perhaps ella's conservative parents actually think lola is a marxist although it's also possible that she's just a kid who picked up a t-shirt she thought had a cool design without any idea of whose face she was wearing also the look kind of reminds me of the one lindsay lohan wears in freaky friday down to the useless belt having also worn army pants and mean girls i think i'm gonna have to snag myself a pair i saw katie herron wearing army pants and flip-flops so i bought army pants and flip-flops when she returns home she puts on a trucker cap that has her name written on it in a graffiti font i could not think of a more lola accessory loudly broadcasting her name to anyone who sees her in a very new york way i also think the scene is sweet because although we see that she and her mother do argue they also love one another for her audition lola wears a long lace skirt black pointed toe boots a long-sleeve striped blouse and a velvet choker although it may not seem obvious at first glance lola is actually dressing for the play which was originally set in london in 1912. the edwardian period was an extremely opulent time in fashion and women often wore two-piece dresses long sleeves ruffled collars and durable boots as you might be able to tell lola takes influence from these trends and creates a contemporary take on the edwardian look showing that she is definitely a clever and creative girl her top also gives me sweeney todd meets jimi hendrix vibes but i don't know if that's purposeful while she's relatively covered up the outfit is still bold and bright and i remember the first time i watched this movie i literally stared at lola in awe just like sam does during the scene it's really such a great way to highlight her individuality and confidence lola's next outfit is one i would wear today she's wearing an amazing leather patchwork coat flared jeans red platform heels a rusty colored baker's boy cap and a blue tank top overall what makes this outfit is really the jacket it makes the entire look look authentically vintage and incredibly 1970s i wonder if this is lola's take on a penny lane outfit what she'll be remembered for as a muse there's also something very new york about this look and we can see some of lola's new york attitude come out when she's confronted by carla look what the wind blew in look what the cat dragged in we briefly see lola in a blue lace top and a ruched pink skirt when she finds out the news about sid arthur and it's interesting to see that on a relatively normal day she isn't dressed too outlandishly also that skirt would have been perfect for mean girls while she and lola are mourning sid arthur's breakup in front of the school lola wears an all-black outfit with gold trim i believe it takes inspiration from the traditional clothing of spanish bullfighters which is meant to symbolize a date with death where matador would dress up before entering an honorable battle with the bull the significance of this article of clothing in the film is that to lola she's not only mourning the death of the band but the death of a part of herself when she and carla have their dance battle lola is wearing the most new yorky outfit she could possibly find a stark contrast to carla's more suburban look the handmade jersey features the colors of the new york knicks with lola's name printed on the back along with the number eight the look takes obvious influence from urban street wear and is honestly really cool i could see it being in a music video or something and considering everything from her shoes to her beanie to her boxers all match it's pretty perfect lola is still hurting from the news of sid arthur so it's no surprise that she decided to dress in an outfit that would bring her comfort and remind her of home when lola attempts to convince her mother to let her go see siddhartha's farewell concert she dresses in a grace kelly audrey hepburn inspired outfit with a leopard print scarf sunglasses and a baby blue cardigan lola likely chose this look as she thought it would create a sympathetic character forgetting that oftentimes the women wearing these looks in movies are usually hiding something which her mother notices making the whole thing backfire on her while talking to sam lola wears a fairly straightforward outfit of jeans and a leather jacket but it's in her many layers that we see her outlandishness shine it seems as though when lola is in moments where she feels like she has less control she tends to go a bit more crazy with her outfits using them as a security blanket in a rather unfortunate homage to mahatma gandhi lola wears an all-white look with a bindi that probably wouldn't pass today but this was the 2000s and many celebs like gwen stefani were participating in exoticism considering lola is attempting a hunger strike to get her mother to let her go see sid arthur the outfit does make sense in that context she's an overdramatic kid with a penchant for flamboyance of course she would dress up like the man who held the most famous hunger strike in history she's essentially playing a part i'm on a hunger strike like gandhi driven to desperate measures by the insensitivity of the british government not one morsel will pass my lips until you say i can go see sid arthur it's during this moment that we also find out what a huge liar lola is telling ella her father had tragically died when really her parents were just divorced it shows that no matter how hard she tries lola is still just a kid who has trouble processing complex emotions and that she wants to try her best to avoid reality also interesting how she's wearing white a color typically associated with innocence when she's anything but at school the next day lola wears a pair of jeans belted with a scarf and a sequined peacock top i swear to god i had this exact outfit at one point besides peacock motifs having a serious moment of popularity in the 2000s there's also a deeper meaning to having this animal appear on her clothing lola is peacocking trying to portray herself in a better and stronger light to help her stand out against her competition carla lola knows she doesn't have the tickets but carla doesn't and as we know lola can lie her butt off so her inability to admit the truth about the situation even if it may cause more trouble in the long run makes perfect sense for her slightly stubborn character lola's next outfit once again gears more punk similar to these other two looks and considering it's the style she wears most often i'm thinking it's probably her favorite she's got on a studded belt and bracelet green animal print fingerless gloves a cowl neck top and the same black pants from earlier when she and ella are hanging out in her room lola asks her mom for money for a new dress saying it's for carla's party when it's really for the concert lying yet again the outfit she's wearing is one of her wackier choices red capris a blue polo with matching knee socks and a striped crocheted bucket hat overall very busy and very confusing likely mirroring lola's current mental state of not only not having tickets but also not having anything to wear might as well just wear this deceased too nothing else to wear anyway who doesn't know how to dress later that day when she her mother and ella go to talk to ella's parents we see that lola has changed into a different outfit the blue outfit is similar in style to the headscarf outfit from earlier where lola was trying to appear demure and innocent but ella's parents don't know her that well and fall for the disguise hook line and sinker something about this outfit reminds me of the blue suit lindsay lohan wore in 1998's the parent trap or maybe grace kelly's dress in 1955's to catch a thief we can also see where lola gets her theatrical and fashionable nature from as her mother has also changed into something a bit more conservative to meet ella's parents hoping to improve their impression of her in another fantasy sequence lola transforms into marilyn monroe in the 7 year itch the gorgeous white halter dress looks absolutely spectacular on lindsay she's also wearing a pair of louboutins good for her in this fantasy she's dreaming of dancing with her idol slash male celebrity crush stew wolf who winds up placing a diamond version of her bottle cap necklace around her neck this is perhaps the one and only problem i have with this movie it's quite natural for young girls to develop nonsensical crushes on celebrities but it's definitely weird to see it play out on screen the actor playing stu wolf is 13 years older than lindsay lohan who at the time of filming was only 17. so it's incredibly uncomfortable to watch lindsay do a marilyn monroe impersonation while dancing with a grown-ass man who tries to kiss her well yes part of his character's story requires him getting drunk and being a fool it's still weird to see a girl who's supposed to be what 15 fantasize about being his marilyn monroe boy bands existed at this point with massive popularity so why not make the guy she has a crush on closer to her age or at the very least erase the romantic subtext it's one of those things like cher and josh being ex-step siblings and clueless that could easily have been changed to not be creepy while rehearsing for the musical lola wears her version of dance wear an oversized off-shoulder tee a flowy tie-dye skirt leg warmers and a sweat band it's very 80s meets 2000s and despite being in a crowd of people she still manages to stand out compared to many of her other outfits which seem to take inspiration from the 70s this outfit seems a bit out of character and considering she's convinced sam to steal the dress for her and is worried about him it reveals how she's currently flustered after rehearsal lola changes into a more casual outfit with jeans a long lacy top and of course cowboy boots and an amazing cowboy hat we can also see that she's carrying around the leather fringe jacket from earlier in the movie and unlike carla when she reuses a clothing item it actually makes sense the simplicity of this outfit even with the cowboy accoutrements reveals a habit that lola has of dressing down when she's around sam perhaps he makes her feel like she doesn't have to work as hard we can see the hat and jacket in her bedroom at other points in the movie and i wouldn't be surprised if a more eagle-guide viewer could spot some more items in the background of other scenes on the train lola's wearing a mickey mouse graphic tee black jeans a red fedora and her army jacket i find it interesting that the jacket makes an appearance again because the last time we saw it lola was lying to ella about her father being dead and now she's lying to her about borrowing the eliza dress speaking of the eliza dress if you've never seen the 1964 musical film my fair lady which is inspired by pygmalion the same play lola's school is adapting into a modern musical it follows a young girl named eliza doolittle who works as a flower seller on the streets of london but hopes to one day work in a flower shop which is unfortunately impossible due to her thick cockney accent one day she meets professor henry higgins a phonetic scholar who says he can pass eliza off as a duchess at an embassy ball if he's able to teach her in the my fair lady film which you should really watch if you haven't there's a moment where eliza goes to the races at ascot and in the scene she wears an absolutely spectacular white and black floor-length gown designed by cecil beaton what casual viewers of confessions of a teenage drama queen might not realize is that the red dress is a contemporary take on that same dress note the fluted sleeves lace collar bow and velvet trim the biggest differences are in color and length but the similarities are definitely there when eliza is wearing the dress in my fair lady it's a moment where she's attempting to deceive others into thinking she's someone of importance and of higher standing but she fails [Music] lola is doing the exact same thing in this movie trying to bluff her way into the concert in order to make both ella and carla think she's cooler than she really is and unfortunately coming up short the red lace shrug with sequins is actually a separate piece from the tube dress and we see lola not only rip it over the course of the evening but she takes it off entirely the shrug also has pins of stew on it symbolizing his importance to her but with the shrug off we can see the beginning of the illusion being shattered she's no longer completely enamored with him in stu's bedroom lola picks out a black muscle tee and red and black patterned flared pants once again we see her wear studded accessories a choker and a belt and she looks completely at home in the outfit she's a rebel at heart her next outfit is one of my favorites in the entire movie because it's just so absurd and yet utterly perfect the look which gives me 60s mod vibes consists of a light blue dress with a cut out layered underneath a sheer beaded and feather trimmed pullover and adorable white cowboy boots it's an outfit that demands you look at it and only the truly confident could ever pull it off which is kind of perfect for the situation because lola thinks she's one feeling dejected because of carla's lies a poignant moment as lola's been lying nearly the entire time and has finally gotten a taste of her own medicine she removes the sheer overlay at rehearsal and wears just the dress it's still a bold look but significantly less so than before she's never been concerned about her appearance being too outlandish before revealing that her strong sense of self is beginning to waver when she goes home she wears the most casual outfit we've seen her in thus far symbolizing how she doesn't have it in her to put on a brave face at the moment this is her low point when ella comes to drag her to the school play lola is wearing a pink camisole with green trim and matching satin bottoms something that looks incredibly cozy after a pep talk scolding from ella she's able to find the strength to face her naysayers and go to the play grabbing a gorgeous coat that matches her outfit perfectly turning it from drab to totally fab not gonna lie i want it for myself lola's costumes for the play range from ordinary to utterly spectacular her first outfit is a white and yellow checkout uniform symbolic of the character of eliza's innocence and optimism her next outfit a gray belted pinafore on top of a button up with a tie is super cute and honestly looks like something you'd see in an early episode of gossip girl the next dress a white and yellow belted empire dress with a matching daisy choker mirrors her first costume in the play showing how the character has come full circle while the white gloves are an ode to my fair lady when we finally see the red dress in the context of the play she's also wearing white opera length gloves and a long 1920s inspired cocoon coat with a fringe her final outfit in the play is a hot pink set with sequins and ruffles with the blue backup dancers the outfit easily pops and i could see any real pop star of the time wearing something similar on stage also has anyone other than lindsay lohan looked this good in low-rise pants at the cast party lola keeps her hair due from the finale with all of its crimps and clip-in highlights but switches into an utterly fantastic purple and pink dress with a fringe and a matching stool like carla she's one of the most dressed up people there showing us that lola is back after stu personally returns lowe's bottle cap necklace we see our final fantasy sequence in it she is dancing with stew wearing a blue suit while she has a blue version of her party dress even her pink highlights have been switched out for blue ones it's interesting to see that while she still is fantasizing she's more grounded in reality than before preferring it even which outfit and confessions of a teenage drama queen was your favorite i hope you enjoyed this video don't forget to like and subscribe and i'll see you soon bye you
