hello beautiful dubs so today i am back in brooklyn and i'm really excited but my apartment is under a little bit of renovations right now as me and my roommates kind of get everything together and move everything in so i'm not there right now i'm recording in my boyfriend's studio i'll probably be recording here until my bedroom is appropriate for the public they're with me but i'm very excited and yeah there's gonna be a new change of environment from now on today i'm gonna be doing a highly requested video which is rating disney villains if you're new to this channel basically for my rating series i give each character a historical accuracy rating and a style rating they are both out of 10. so for today is going to be the queen from snow white frollo from the hunchback of nishidam hades from hercules dr faciliar from the princess and the frog and captain hook from peter pan i kind of just picked five random ones um this is going to be a three-part series so this is just part one also in recent news i'm very excited to announce that i have launched a patreon and i launched it just a couple days ago so it's not too late it's never too late to subscribe to that if you're interested you can click the link in my description i have different rewards for each tier i would super duper appreciate anyone who can pitch in this would give me so much more financial stability so i can continue making these videos on a relatively frequent basis as well as to afford my books and research materials that i purchase every time i do these videos so even having those costs covered on patreon would just be enormously vague i also commissioned my boyfriend chase to do the little historical cat icons for each tier so even if you don't have the financial stability to support me at least check those out because they're really really cute and i'm thinking about making them into stickers so okay without further ado let's get started i believe that snow white in the seven dwarfs takes place in bavaria which is modern day germany in the mid 1500s i vase the time period on the slash sleeves and standing collar that snow is wearing which was in fashion for the period and i say bavaria based on the fact that the original snow white takes place in bavaria and there's some german details scattered around in the movie one fun speculation i learned from the concise history of costume and fashion by james laver is that slashing became popular when swiss troops started to slash up costly materials to patch up their raggedy clothing at the battle of grandson in 1476. the swiss were then copied by german mercenaries and then that trend ended up in the french and english courts but apparently germany is where the slashing was most extravagant at least for men according to the tudor taylor reconstructing 16th century dress all women of this time were a smock as their first layer and then i fitted and an attached skirt called a petticoat by the 1550s then she wears a curdle on top however wealthy and fashionable women would sometimes skip the petticoat entirely and opt for the curdle as their second layer i assume that the queen being as rich and vain as she is would just wear a smock and a curdle and of course a very elaborate gown on top of them according to fashion the definitive history of costume and style there was an obsession with pleading in germanic fashions of the 15th and 16th centuries so the skirts of the queen's curdle and gown would most likely be heavily pleated the waistline also looks flatter than the pointed styles seen in spanish english and french fashions there were a couple different styles of women's dress but for the queen i would put her in a gown similar to this dress worn by met of moosh hazen oh gosh she's depicted wearing a black velvet galler a pleated white apron and a pleated over gown that is open to reveal the curdle the galler which is the shoulder cape was in fashion for the early 16th century but continued in popularity in some areas of germany until the 17th century it could be trimmed with gold tissue or armin for high rank women so you know the queen would have some or mean details it was also typical for fashionable bodices at this time periods to be flattened and smooth but i noticed in german paintings the chest is less flat which makes me think that this wasn't a big trend in germany i would also give the queen some dramatic sleeves like the ones pictured in this 1540s painting of a lady in south germany they're like a more period accurate version of the queen's long medieval-esque sleeves women also covered their hair unless they were unmarried but not like this the queen's balaclava is very medieval looking in the 16th century there were several different headdress options available but i would give her a bag coiff which is the bag like hair net for lack of a better word this portrait of a german lady wearing a koif is from 1548 and hers is made of gold netting and embellished with pearls i imagine the queen would wear something similarly elaborate unfortunately i'm going to give the queen a 2 out of 10 for historical accuracy she looks like she's wearing like a very generic medieval costume and not anything remotely resembling 16th century fashions other than the standing collar for style i'll give her a 7 out of 10 though i think she looks fabulously evil with that long cape flowing behind her i also do really like the balaclava even if it's not period accurate i'm taking off a few points though because i think she could look way more regal the rope belt is not doing any favors and is giving monk vibes rather than queen energy so in the original story the hunchback of notre dame by victor hugo frollo is actually not a minister of justice he is the archdeacon of notre dame which actually kind of makes more sense because quasimodo was raised in the notre dame bell tower i guess disney didn't want to throw in some controversial church alignment with their villains which you know is something because they definitely do not care at all about making their villains seem jewish hi i'm here to tell you that there's a crazy amount of anti-semitism in children's movies that may have slipped under your radar the problem is that most children's media uses a consistent visual dichotomy to distinguish between good guys and bad guys good guy bad guy button nose hooked [Music] regardless of whether or not it's intentional media like this reinforces the idea that certain commonly jewish ethnic features look evil in the disney movie frollo is the minister of justice which doesn't really make sense because the minister of justice position was not created yet the position was created in 1790 i think the title that disney meant would be the grand chancellor of france which was the highest judicial position at the time and it actually transformed into the minister of justice later on the hunchback of notre dame takes place in 1482 and paris france obviously this is when the original book takes place and there's no reason in the disney movie that says otherwise for historical accuracy i would give fralo a 4 out of 10. i can see some influences but the overall look is just super stylized so i couldn't find too many historical images of judges at the time but the ones i did find kind of just portray the judges wearing what other noblemen of the time were it doesn't seem like there was any fancy judge designated attire guillaume juvenile desert sin who was the chancellor of france in the 1400s is painted wearing a fur trimmed upland which was an overcoat with wide sleeves and it was usually cinched at the waist the hat that brother wears looks to be something between a bonnet and a chaperone which had several different forms but the one i'm thinking of is kind of similar to the one that philip the good is wearing in this painting there's also a long sash that hangs in the back this sash is actually supposed to be made of the same material as the rest of the chaperone but the one that frollo wears looks to be like an added ribbon i also imagine that frala would carry a rosary so the rosary wasn't codified until 1569 so follows would actually be custom personalized the most common number of bees was 50 but there are strings with more or less beads in medieval times rosary bees were joined with string thread or ribbon not all of them had a cross or crucifix either some rosaries had tassels or a religious medal they could be worn number of ways but my guess is that frallo would wear his at his belt in a very flashy manner so to emphasize to everyone around him that he is very pious [Music] yet even now it is not too late i can save you from the flames of this world and the next [ __ ] give me a [ __ ] break for style i give fallow a six out of ten his design definitely tells us that he's a judge which i guess is the most important factor at the end of the day i also like his color scheme disney loves their purple red black disney villain combo and i think it works the best for frallo but honestly i would probably make red his main color if his design was up to me it was very expensive to obtain the color red because of its limited availability as well as the very complex dyeing process kermes was the most expensive dye but it produced a very magnificent and bold scarlet color it's obtained from the dried bodies of pregnant kermis which is an insect so naturally the color was associated with power prestige and nobility due to fraule's high status as chancellor i could see him wearing a red robe the color red also has an association with the catholic church in 1464 pope paul ii decreed all cardinals to wear scarlet instead of the traditional tyrion purple the mollusks that make the purple were unfortunately going into decline because of over harvesting now the common belief is that cardinals wear red to symbolize how they are willing to be martyred for their faith so with that said i think it would be hilariously ironic for fallow to be depicted wearing scarlet robes [Music] and now before anyone can come to me and say how can you do hades hades is a mythical figure he doesn't exist we have no record of what he would look like well yes okay but greece is a real place and the people there had real clothing so that's what we're going to be working with today so the story of hercules is actually supposed to take place in the mycenaean period which is the last phase of the bronze age which was between 1700 bce to 1100 bce disney gives conflicting information on the time period as per 90s disney usual the way that disney designed hercules resembles classical greece which was hundreds of years after the bronze age do i blame them no of course not i think that the image that people conjure when they think of ancient greece is the classical period of ancient greece so it would make sense that disney would want to pander to that image that people have so i hope it's clear why i'm giving hades a 1 out of 10 on historical accuracy the one point is that he looks vaguely greek so i was not shockingly unable to find any images of hades in the surviving mycenaean art i say not surprisingly because we actually haven't been able to find any depictions of male gods in mycenaean art this is not to say that they didn't paint their male gods ever it's just to say that we've never found any we do know that the greek gods did originate in the mycenaean religion though in excavated tablets called linear b texts there are records of people bringing gifts to the gods many of them who are familiar like zeus and hera i assume that the mycenaeans depicted their gods in the same likeness as humans similar to how the athenian greeks depicted their gods in their vase paintings in the vase paintings the gods tend to be wearing stylish modern clothing in classical grease what was in fashion was the chitin which is a loose long tunic-like garment in this late classical vase painting of persephone hermes hecate and demeter we can see they're all wearing chitins hermes is an addition wearing a winged pitosis cap and a cloak called a claimus both of which were worn by greek men at the time much of what we know about mycenaean clothing is from surviving fresco paintings the interesting thing with the mycenaean civilization is that they were the first in greece to have their men wear tunics the minoans wore loincloths but micenae and men are shown wearing structured tunics with sleeves that fall just before the elbow the necklines were square and trimmed i couldn't find any information on specific garments worn by royalty but i assumed that hades would be depicted wearing something a little more jesus than the common mycenaean man similar to how hades looks in this late classical period vase painting the silhouette is still the same but he has decorative embellishments on the belt and around the neckline to emphasize his godliness i also stumbled across an article by nicola moredu called a dark dionysus the transformation of a greek god between the bronze and iron age in it he postulates that in the mycenaean religion hades and dionysus were the same god i'll link the article in the description it actually lists a number of reasons of how he came to this conclusion and honestly it's pretty convincing but i bring this up because if hades and dionysus were the same god under this time period then a fun historically accurate design for hades would incorporate some great vines i guess also hades wears the helm of hades and a lot of greek myths and the helm of hades is basically this piece that grants the wearer and visibility i think it would have been a cool addition to add to the story somehow just because the helm is a very popularly referenced clothing artifact when it comes to hades and even though it makes sense for him to be invisible the whole movie obviously it would have just been a cool thing to like have in one scene for style i give hades an 8 out of 10. i do like the blue fire hair as well as how the tunic hemline resembles smoke the colors are appropriate and the skull brooch is a nice detail as well the only thing i don't like is the shirt underneath the tunic it looks to 20th century modern in my opinion and is overall pretty unflattering [Music] the princess on the frog takes place in new orleans in the 1920s that much is obvious and dr facilier is wearing a dark purple tail coat with black lapels matching trousers a red cummerbund a lighter purple waistcoat a top hat with a skull detail crocodile teeth necklace a cane and heavily stylized spectator shoes for historical accuracy i would give him a 7 out of 10. men of the 1920s wore three-piece suits on every occasion unless they were a member of the working class we can see big daddy wearing an off-white three-piece suit a mark of upper class luxury as well as a proper starched dress shirt in contrast dr facilier looks to be wearing a three-piece suit without a dress shirt his suit is ill-fitting revealing his midriff so he probably got it second hand which makes sense because he's poor if a man could afford it he would try to get his suit bespoke or made to measure the waistcoat being a different shade of purple is also a nice detail because usually the lower classes wouldn't be able to afford a fully matching three-piece suit i understand why they wanted dr facilier to look a little bit creepier because he is a disney villain but just not having a dress shirt is just so off-putting especially considering like dr facility wears the same exact outfit every day it just wouldn't make sense for him to forgo the shirt dr vasilier is not a rich man and so i would assume this is the only suit he owns so it would make more sense for him to wear a shirt underneath the suit to pick up body sweat for much of history people would wear an under layer under their chest and they would just launder their under layers um instead of washing their outer garments because the outer garments tended to be more difficult or expensive to wash and also washing clothes frequently like wears them down so if you want to preserve your clothing it would make more sense for you to wear a garment underneath that just soaks up all the sweat and grime and then wash that every day if a man couldn't afford a three-piece suit then he would forego the waistcoat he wouldn't forgo the shirt this is the main reason i take off points for style i would give him a 7 out of 10. i like the overall design you definitely think of magician when you see him i like the choice for a purple suit rather than a black one but if the shoes were matching he would look a lot better i also was looking at some dr facility concept art because i like looking at concept when i do these videos and there's this one image that has him looking a lot more upper class with well a dress shirt but also a pinstripe suit which was very 1920s the other concept art image has him wearing a mismatching top and bottoms um though the pants are still on trend pinstripe i actually much prefer this design according to the vintage dancer website which admittedly is not like the most reputable resource but i couldn't find any other information on this so if anyone has a better link please let me know but according to this website black men of the 1920s while following the silhouetted trends that upper class white men wore tended to include more color and flashier patterns if he was wealthier or attending college he would dress more conservatively to blend in with his white counterparts i would personally put facilier in a flashier color scheme especially because he's an entertainer but i do know that disney likes to keep their villains in a very conformed dark color scheme so i think incorporating mismatching patterns like check and pinstripe could elevate his look while also bringing a kind of unique energy to this character because none of the other men would dress like that i would also remove the cover bun from the final design as we don't really see them in the 1920s i actually came across an evening star article from may 12th 1922 that totally validated me on this point this journalist writes a long time ago the cummerbund or sash was worn by men in summer and lube a vest it had a tremendous spoke for a while and it was developed and amplified until the fad became worn out and the sash passed never to be seen again i also ran a search for the word cummerbund in u.s newspapers from the 1920s to the 1940s and you can see how the words spiked in the 1930s with 4149 results whereas the 1920s had a mere 448 results nationwide i also went through a bunch of the 1920s newspapers and the word cummerbund was used in a handful of short story submissions that were mass published across different newspapers the word from what i saw was not used to signify any trends in menswear though there were a few that mentioned the cummerbund as a woman's accessory [Music] so captain hook resides in neverland and while disney's peter pan takes place in the 1950s we do know that time moves differently in neverland we also don't know from what time period the characters were plucked from for the sake of just picking a time i'm gonna say the early 1700s because the golden age of piracy takes place between the 1650s and 1730s and also hook is dressed a lot more like an 18th century pirate than a 17th century pirate for historical accuracy i'd say that hook gets a 7 out of 10. um let's start with what is off the hook it's difficult to say whether or not a hook was actually ever used as a prosthetic some people say that onride's tonti and italian colonizer was nicknamed iron hand because he wore a prosthetic hook underneath a glove however other accounts say that the iron hand was simply an iron hand prosthetic no hook involved we do know that prosthetics did exist though ambrose paul ray a surgeon from the 16th century designed and built different sophisticated prosthesis including a mechanical hand however not only were his prosthesis very expensive they were made of wood covered in metal so they were super heavy making them pretty impractical for regular use it was also just rare for pirates to continue pirating after losing a limb or suffering from a major injury like that pirates actually signed a contract when they joined and this contract did specify disability payments because of this in alexandria eskimelyn's memoirs compiled in the book the buccaneers of america he details the compensation rules on captain henry morgan's ship crew members would be compensated for losing body parts or dealing with an internal injury usually an injury would retire a pirate but there were some cases where pirates would stay on board if their injuries were not too debilitating also surviving was like a whole other thing altogether because most of the people performing these amputations on these pirate ships were cooks they were not actual surgeons so the rate of surviving the blood loss on top of like infection was just pretty low in the 17th and 18th centuries let's move on to hook's clothes in the 17th century most pirates wore plain or checked shirts the same uniform as merchant seamen but in the 18th century more pirates started to wear gentlemanly shirts cravats and knee-length breeches to distinguish themselves from the merchant semen hook is missing a waistcoat but the overcoat is pretty accurate for a cartoon it looks super expensive being red and trimmed with gold it's just missing buttons on the front hook also is wearing a broad brimmed hat with a long plume called a cavalier hat i would expect hook to wear more jewelry as well given how elaborate his costume is with that said despite having these fancy clothes a lot of pirates only really wore decked out costumes on special occasions it just wasn't practical for everyday activity because the life of a pirate was very physically demanding you needed a high level of fitness and stamina to haul on ropes all day and to deal with being cold and wet for days on end this is why most pirates were actually in their twenties i'll tell the crew and according to the golden age of piracy by benison little even pirates from upper class backgrounds would wear a simple uniform of thread stockings linen drawers a vest and a handkerchief around their heads therefore while hook's costume is possible for an 18th century pirate it's just not realistic that he would wear it like every day for style i'm giving him a 7 out of 10. i like how the breeches match his hat the bold red color of his coat and i'm a sucker for cravats the only thing really throwing me off is the pink shirt underneath which kind of clashes with everything this is all i have for today let me know in the comments who your favorite disney villain is and if you didn't see your favorite in this batch do not come for me yet it's a three-part series and yeah i hope you all have a lovely rest of your day thank you so much for watching [Music] bye you
