[Music] iconic fashion moments jackie kennedy's pink suit we're finally back with another episode of iconic fashion moments the series on this channel where we look at a legendary moment in fashion how it came to be and how it continues to be influential today while government officials aren't usually remembered for their sense of style there's no denying that the 35th first lady of the united states jackie kennedy holds a permanent place in pop culture as a full-fledged fashion icon the wife of president john f kennedy jacqueline lee bouvier was loved by women worldwide during the 1960s who were drawn to her beauty youth and style of the many outfits she wore that helped cultivate her fashionable image there's undoubtedly none more memorable than her pink suit with matching pillbox hat the ensemble she wore on november 22nd 1963 the ill-fated day her husband was assassinated during jfk's presidential campaign the two heads of state traveled to paris where jackie had once studied in the late 40s and she was warmly embraced by the country with french newspapers celebrating her style and interest in the culture the fashionable image that jackie exuded on this trip enhanced the kennedy's popularity at home and abroad creating the image that the two were the ideal modern american her fashion forward image also came with consequences after she rumoredly spent over forty thousand dollars of her husband's salary on clothing and newspapers began reporting that she'd spent thirty thousand on designer clothing in paris public approval of the first lady soured with many americans seeing it as not only wasteful and frivolous but as a betrayal of the country by supporting foreign businesses after being criticized for wearing these french brands jackie made sure her clothes were either bought in america or made by american designers shea nino a high-end atelier in manhattan was known across the country for supplying american socialites and celebrities with designer dupes their looks were european inspired and american made recreating french and italian couture designs by legally acquiring the license for specific looks a process called line four line shani nom became the first lady source for american-made copies of her favorite french designs and she frequented the boutique not just to save money but to help boost her patriotic image by choosing to support american-owned businesses her now famous pink suit was one of these line for line copies by shanino as confirmed by karl lagerfeld in an interview with style.com quote in 1963 it was a fake a line by line copy we have all the proof end quote the original pink and navy suit initially debuted at chanel fall winter 1961 and cost upwards of ten thousand dollars shaninol acquired the design and replicated the look with fabric buttons and trim that were all directly purchased from chanel only the suit's construction was american the significance of this suit can't be ignored in the late 1950s and early 1960s the chanel suit was one of the strongest symbols of upper class femininity and evoked an image of sophistication intelligence wealth and independence for the modern woman while the color pink which had become associated with femininity at this point was symbolic of the idealized feminine image that jackie kennedy had created all of these aspects combined made the suit the perfect purchase for the president's partner my favorite i know like many outfit choices jackie made as the first lady her pink suit was worn with purpose and what you may not know is that she had actually worn the suit on several other occasions something we don't see very often with politicians nowadays in an interview with historian william manchester jackie mentions that it was jfk who gave her the idea to wear the suit on that ill-fated trip to texas telling her quote there are going to be all these rich republican women at that lunch wearing mink coats and diamond bracelets and you've got to look as marvelous as any of them be simple show these texans what good taste really is end quote jackie's personal assistant providencia paredes told today that she was the one who packed the pink suit quote jack called me and told me to pack something light because it's supposed to be warm over there and it's through this series of coincidences that fashion history was made after the president shooting jackie was offered help out of the pink suit which had been stained with her husband's blood but she refused stating quote oh no i want them to see what they have done to jack she wore the suit throughout the swearing-in ceremony of vice president johnson aboard air force one and according to lady bird johnson now the first lady quote her hair was falling in her face but she was very composed i looked at her mrs kennedy's dress was stained with blood one leg was almost entirely covered with it and her right glove was caked it was caked with blood her husband's blood somehow that was one of the most poignant sights that immaculate woman exquisitely dressed and caked in blood end quote the suit was given to jackie's mother who eventually donated it to the national archives in maryland for safekeeping the outfit still covered in jfk's blood is currently hidden from public viewing and stored in a climate-controlled room where it will remain until at least 2103 according to the deed of jackie's soul surviving heir the ensemble however is incomplete with jackie's matching pillbox hat and her white gloves missing to this day what's perhaps most interesting about the lasting impact of this pink suit is that for nearly a year the general public had absolutely no idea what color it was in today's world we've grown accustomed to photos being in color but back in the 1960s it wasn't the standard and many of the pictures and news broadcasts of jackie were in black and white hiding the suit's true image it wasn't until color photographs were published in life magazine's jfk memorial issue on november 29 1963 that the color became widely known and as a result pink suits became a certifiable fashion trend worldwide because there's a bizarre fascination with the entire kennedy family we've seen dozens of and will likely continue to see portrayals of jackie kennedy on screen and because the pink suit has become so synonymous with her and her life we'll continue to see it referenced time and time again now let's look at some of them jackie in this critically acclaimed 2016 biopic jackie kennedy is played by natalie portman the film follows jackie during the week after the assassination of jfk with flashbacks to her life as the first lady sprinkled throughout since it's exceptionally crucial to the story and her character's emotional state at this point in time the event in dallas and the pink suit obviously winds up making an appearance while the costume used in the film was made exclusively for and by the production chanel did provide the buttons the chain for inside the jacket and a label to help make the ensemble look as authentic as possible the costume designer emphasized that quote jackie was very concerned about the image she portrayed of jfk's government the elegance she showed in every situation even while relaxing on holiday proves this she was never captured by surprise not looking perfect throughout the movie natalie portman wears various recreations of ensembles the real jackie owned from the red suit she wore while giving a televised tour of the white house to the infamous pink suit in an interview with usa today she said quote it's crazy when clothes become symbols and when you see something so recognizable and iconic it tells a whole story just the dress itself and then of course with the blood on it it has the sort of history of america in it it's really impressive that somebody who was going through something so personally awful and traumatic and terrifying had the presence of mind to understand that it was not only her grief but also the whole nations symbolically she had to represent something to them and present an image that would make an impact it seems that the natural instinct would be to get out of that immediately to get clean to wipe your husband's blood off of you but for her to insist that it stayed on showed this real awareness of public image in a different interview with entertainment tonight natalie portman also mentioned that the clothes were a crucial part in helping her get into the character of jackie and while she and jackie don't share many physical characteristics besides being white with brown hair there's no denying that the sight of natalie in the pink suit creates a striking resemblance it's also worth noting that natalie portman wore another version of the suit while portraying jackie kennedy on snl which proves that even when it's a less than perfect reproduction the look is still instantly recognizable along with many other appearances in other biopics we've also seen the pink suit in the 2011 miniseries the kennedys where the chanel suit was ironically recreated by giorgio armani for the production in 1997 spice world victoria beckham briefly dons a white version of the look for a photo shoot and we briefly see the suit in the second season of the crown revealing how jackie made a lasting impression even in other countries and the suit even makes appearances in animated form in both the simpsons and family guy showing how mainstream jackie's image has become all of these renditions of her pink suit are fairly straightforward but let's look at some more interesting interpretations legally blonde in the first legally blonde film elwoods is seen as the stereotypical dumb blonde by those around her her boyfriend warner dumps her in favor of the more conservative and seemingly cultured vivian kensington believing that she's the type of woman he needs to marry if he wants a successful career in politics if i'm gonna be a senator well i need to marry a jackie not a maryland elle flips the narrative of the dumb blonde by not only proving herself as a lawyer in the first film but by successfully introducing a bill to the white house in its sequel take that warner keeping with her character l wears pink throughout the first and second films but in the sequel film legally blonde 2 red white and blonde elle's most memorable outfit is undoubtedly what she wears when she first arrives at the capitol [Music] too hillary perfect for words the pink suit with matching pillbox hat is an obvious ode to jackie kennedy and is also a callback to the first film where she's proven that you can be as girly as you want and still be successful thus i yield to my colleague the lady in hot pink you have the floor lady in hot pink i love that the dress has a more modern silhouette to better fit elle's personal style as well as the film's time period and audience scream queens during season one of the show chanel oberlin forces the rest of her lackeys to follow her halloween theme of dressing as the wives of presidents who've been assassinated oh my god why are you so depressed my husband was shot in dallas idiot i am jackie kennedy in line with her self-absorbed fashion-obsessed character she gives herself the role of jackie kennedy the most glamorous and well-remembered first lady while her character has been shown to wear designer items repeatedly throughout the show including chanel this is actually just a cheap costume which is fairly ironic considering jackie kennedy's suit was also a chanel dupe albeit a good one national anthem one of lana del rey's earliest hits was 2012's national anthem in the music video for the song lana took on the role of both marilyn monroe and jackie kennedy women who were both involved with jfk she combines the image of both women into one and references numerous moments in their lives with asap rocky as jfk they re-enact kennedy's assassination lana wears an orange suit with a white hat and while the color is nothing like jackie's original suit we can instantly catch the reference due to the silhouette of the outfit as well as lana teasing her hair into a large jackie-esque bouffant it also reveals the timelessness of the outfit as it still looks as chic and classy as ever in fact you can see this further proven in dualipa's 2020 break my heart video where she wears a pink suit set by mewmew that feels like a modern take on jackie's outfit or even in ariana grande's 2020 positions music video where she wears various 60s inspired fashions princess diana similarly to jackie kennedy princess diana was well regarded for her beauty and style and continues to live on in pop culture as a style icon with many of the outfits she wore over the course of her life continuing to serve as style inspiration even to this day this pink versace suit she wore in 1995 is a clever ode to jackie suit that isn't too on the nose i also think it's important to note that both women lead very similar lives being forced to cultivate a specific image in order to sustain the role they had been forced into while having to deal with the repercussions for the rest of their lives moschino for fall winter 2018 moschino took inspiration for their collection from 1960s fashion trends and jackie kennedy's style in general the models walked the runway in modernized takes of jackie's signature look with the brand adding leather details and silver hardware to give the looks a punk rock edge while the buffant hairstyles and pillbox hats made it obvious who they were referencing on both the runway and in print advertising the models were painted different colors giving them an otherworldly inhuman appearance that perfectly juxtaposed the picture-perfect image of jackie kennedy the collection helps further prove that her image has become so immortalized that even when the ensembles look vastly different we're still reminded of her what was your favorite take on jackie kennedy's pink suit and which iconic fashion moment do you want to see us cover next i hope you enjoyed this video don't forget to like and subscribe and i'll see you soon bye
