[Music] 2021 fashion trends and predictions 2020 has been a depressing wildly unpredictable big ol mess of a year and i for one couldn't be happier to see it go but no matter how crazy things have been and how uncertain they may get there's one thing we can always be sure of fashion trends will come and go and what's in style one year could be out the next with 2021 on its way i thought it'd be fun to test my fashion knowledge and make a few predictions for the upcoming year will i be 100 correct probably not but i bet i'll be pretty damn close let me know in 12 months before we start this list let me preface it by stating the obvious some of these trends may have already started popping up here and there it's a crucial part of how fashion works a trend will trickle in slowly before snowballing and soon enough it'll be everywhere so yes you or someone you know might already be wearing one of the things on this list already that just means you're ahead of the curve and because i know some wise guy in the comments will say something no there isn't an all-powerful fashion law that goes out on january 1st saying all right it's a new year you can wear this and only this now throw out everything you own people will still wear what's already in their closets and what they're comfortable with consider this video as more of a list of trends you can look forward to seeing in 2021 you don't have to follow them just plan accordingly i've mentioned it before on this channel but let me repeat myself for any new viewers the most important thing that you need to know about fashion is that it's cyclical the industry rarely comes up with something that has never existed before after all we as a species have been wearing clothes for hundreds of thousands of years so in more recent years we've taken trends from the past and updated them for modern sensibilities and more importantly a modern market in fashion this is referred to as the 20-year rule a trend cycle that goes from love to hate to nonchalance to love again although i personally have a theory that with the invention of the internet and the rise of fast fashion we're going to have to change that to the 10 year rule but that's a conversation for another day fashion from the 2010s mostly took inspiration from the 80s and 90s this coming year we're going to be seeing a resurgence in popular trends from the 60s and the decades that sandwiched it our most obvious influences will come from hippie and mod subcultures but certain rock and disco trends will be making a splash as well worldwide we're going to be seeing the effects this past year has had socially and economically and it'll inevitably influence what we'll wear overall you should expect to see masks influence more designs and function taking priority over fashion anyway let's get into it long white dresses forget the little black dress 2021 is going to be all about the lwd the long white dress a crucial part of the recent cottage core aesthetic the lwd also takes inspiration from the 70s the long white dresses appeal is not only comfort but versatility and will be seeing them in a wide range of silhouettes large and poofy thin and sheath-like or flowy and romantic whether you're baking having a picnic or just watching netflix there's a perfect lwd for any occasion new old shoes it will be seeing a lot of pumps sling backs boots and loafers shoes that are built for both comfort and style the height of these items will vary leaving you with tons of options based on your own preferences flats will definitely make a comeback but platforms will continue to thrive i wouldn't be surprised if we moved away from thin heels entirely the next few years and stuck to a chunky block if you're looking for a new shoe that will last you for the better part of the coming decade i'd recommend a pair of classic mary janes or some sturdy knee-high heeled boots and as much as i hate hate hate this trend i wouldn't be surprised if we see ballet flats come back for a short time next year after all chanel did have them on their most recent runway as heinous as it was considering how popular ballet flats were during the 1960s the period of time we'll be taking the most inspiration from it's almost inevitable but as someone with high arches and fat ankles i'll be staying as far away from them as possible while i don't think we're going to see much of them in 2021 allow me to put another fashion prediction inside of my fashion prediction video fashionception if you will give it a year or two but i predict that t-strap and oxford heels are going to come back in a major way with fashion taking inspiration from the 1920s in general we'll be dressed like serena vanderwoodsen and blair waldorf all over again and just in time for the gossip girl reboot to come out i love that for us statement jewelry 2021 will have more of an emphasis on accessorizing than years prior and jewelry is going to be equally as important as the clothes on your back gold and silver jewelry will continue in popularity taking inspiration from the 70s especially and we'll be seeing pearl and gem details to give the pieces originality think chunky rings stackable necklaces and glamorous bracelets on the other side of things playfulness is going to increase and fun costume jewelry that takes inspiration from childhood is going to be on the rise we'll see colorful unique pieces that speak to their individual owners it'll probably be one of those trends you love or hate i'm currently on the fence peter pan collars this trend made a brief appearance in the early 2010s if you were on tumblr at that time you probably remember it vividly and peter pan callers are set for another comeback the detail is often associated with school children hence its name and can be both simple and intricate with the rise of 60s a-line dresses i wouldn't be surprised to see a collar here or there although i hope it doesn't become so oversaturated that everyone looks like wednesday adams again mini skirts english designer mary quant is often credited as creating the miniskirt in the 1960s and is considered one of the most influential fashion designers of the period having an above average understanding of the youth market fashion journalist ernestine carter even said quote it is given to a fortunate few to be born at the right time in the right place with the right talents in recent fashion there are three chanel dior and mary quant end quote quantz a-line mini-skirts were worn by icons of the time like twiggy jean trimpton patty boyd and edie sedgwick making her not just beloved by the rich and famous but also a household name while many may not know who mary quant is today we have to thank her for her contribution to fashion especially considering the fact that we're about to enter a year that will be all about the miniskirt i know the idea strikes fear in many of us but don't worry while 60s mini skirts were short in comparison to the hemlines of past decades they're still fairly long and loose in comparison to say the 2000s if you are worried about bearing too much leg consider wearing the miniskirt in conjunction with the next trend hosiery if you're as old as i am then you probably remember the age of leggings under skirts and shorts a horrendous 2000s trend we can thank the 80s for but as i mentioned earlier we're not looking to the 80s for inspiration anymore we're going even further back in time and throughout the early to mid 20th century wearing pantyhose was considered proper while at first it was for modesty it eventually became as important an accessory as anything else in the 1950s pantyhose was still fairly simple although intricate designs and even glitter could occasionally be found but by the 1960s hosiery got more colorful and creative heavily influenced by the rest of the clothing we were wearing at the time both emilio pucci and mary quant were at the forefront of this trend creating bold designs that appealed to their young clientele while patterns were indeed popular the go-to were plain stockings that complemented the rest of your ensemble resulting in hosiery that was every color of the rainbow in 2021 we're not only going to see colorful stockings make a comeback but also patterned pantyhose if i was 500 times richer i'd get these gucci monogram stockings but for something i'd undoubtedly tear in one use i think not just as a tip from one fashionista to another if you want to create a smooth seamless look size up not down stockings that are too tight not only have a habit of tearing faster but it also defeats their very purpose smoothing and you should look into buying a pair of skin colored fishnet tights to wear underneath your other stockings you'll immediately notice a more seamless look it's what celebrities do on stage to give their legs that poreless finish looser fitting pants i've said this before but skinny jeans are so blah nowadays you know the reaction you had to seeing someone wear boot cut jeans like five years ago that's how i feel about skinny jeans now i predict that 2021 is going to be all about straight leg flared and wide like pants it doesn't matter if they're high rise low rise or anything in between just don't let them be skinny take style inspiration for these 70 silhouettes from bianca jagger farrah fawcett and stevie nicks prioritize prints and patterns while the colors we'll be wearing in 2021 will be less saturated than the latter half of the 2010s we're still going to be having fun when it comes to prints and patterns some will be popular for the next few years and others will be relatively short-lived here are six i predict we'll be seeing in 2021 inspired by art the mod subculture which first popped up in the 1950s and evolved as time passed both influenced and was influenced by postmodernism during the swinging 60s despite getting its start in england the mod look was popular with use worldwide and mini skirts boxy dresses bold colors and geometric patterns were all the rage these geometric patterns were most popularly utilized by yves saint laurent for his mondrian collection in 1965 a lover of art saint laurent's collection took inspiration from the work of a variety of modernist artists including dutch painter piet modrion which the collection is now named for these graphic shift dresses were incredibly popular winding up on the cover of french vogue in november 1965. the color blocked look was a mainstay of 1960s mod fashion and san loren's designs were widely and cheaply reproduced all over the world making it a certifiable trend post-modernism which was a popular artistic and philosophical movement throughout the mid-1900s was riddled with irony invention and imitation making one thing look like another or a parody of itself andy warhol's work is a perfect example of early post-modernism in the art world and as an incredibly influential pop culture icon his work wound up influencing fashion not only during its time but in the years since in 1966 yves saint laurent created a graphic pop art collection that took inspiration from warhol's work which received critical and commercial acclaim the widespread popularity of these two yves saint laurent collections were an early example of a lasting collaboration between fashion and art and how they could be two sides of the same coin retroactively these graphic dresses are seen not only as capturing the zeitgeist of the era but continue to be influential to this day in 2021 you should expect to see more art in your fashion and not just a basic screen printed recreation of vincent van gogh's starry night on a t-shirt but integrated seamlessly into the design becoming as much a part of the garment as the fabric itself checkerboard if you've been keeping an eye on recent interior design trends then you won't be surprised by this turn of events in 2019 checkered blankets rugs and even candles were all the rage an early warning sign of the coming return of postmodern influences checkerboard print in the 1960s was popularized by the youth who saw it as an updated take on houndstooth a pattern their parents generation had been fond of influenced by psychedelic art and symmetry in general you could find smaller checkerboard patterns on everything from knitwear to dresses and large graphic check was a popular motif on miniskirts the print managed to outlast the decade and in 1977 it made a permanent place for itself in the fashion world on a pair of shoes the vans checkerboard slip-ons the shoe was a mainstay in the skating world for decades and in the mid-2000s eventually became synonymous with the pop punk and emo subcultures the shoe's influence on alternative trends was obvious and checkered print made a brief comeback in the late 2000s on everything from belts to hoodies in the 2010s checker print died out in favor of other geometric patterns like plaid gingham and stripes but as we enter the new year we're going to be seeing a return of the bold color blocked pattern wear it as a statement piece or make it a part of your everyday look the biggest benefit of the checkered pattern is that it's versatile a smaller check print will draw the eye while a large check will come off as subdued feeling really bold go for a check on check outfit but a good jumping off point is investing in a good checkered sweater that you can wear with just about anything live your best queen's gambit life abstract shapes another pattern that takes influence from post-modernism consider this the most creative of the prints we'll be seeing in 2021 there will be squiggles blobs spirals lines and dots with seemingly no order to them it's all about the abstract you'll be a walking talking art piece emilio pucci could not be happier with this turn of events paisley i talked all about paisley in my 2000s comeback video so give that a watch if you haven't but basically what you need to know is that the floral teardrop shape pattern has been in circulation for the better part of a millennium in the 1960s the pattern was popularized in the west by the beatles and became associated with spirituality and psychedelia or in simpler terms hippies during the summer of love in 67 which was essentially spring break for flower children paisley was also worn regularly and forever became synonymous with love freedom drugs and peace paisley is one of my favorite patterns and i actually have a paisley dress from my mother from the 1970s it can be saturated and bold or neutral and muted bandanas are classic but i'm partial to a paisley blouse myself it looks great with a pair of good blue jeans and you'll find that you'll get the most bang for your buck that way flowers um well they're showing a lot of florals right now so i was thinking for spring groundbreaking no not florals flowers there's a big difference florals are one of those trends that will simply never die but this upcoming flower trend will be here then gone yet again taking inspiration from mod fashion of the 1960s these flowers will be more childlike innocent as if someone gave you a crayon and asked you to draw a daisy you'll be able to keep it simple with cute flowery accessories or go all out with a flower-powered dress unconventional animals cow and leopard prince had their moment in 2019 and 2020. but in 2021 they'll be replaced by other somewhat niche creatures like zebra tiger and dalmatian i know a lot of people hate animal print considering it tacky and over the top but just like any other crazy pattern it can look great if you know what you're doing moving on from prints and patterns let's talk about the colors i predict will be most popular throughout 2021 this is a little unpredictable so i won't be surprised if i'm wrong here in congruence with the return of the mod look we're going to see bright and bold colors that are reminiscent of a paint palette forest green cobalt blue mustard yellow and candy red on the other side of the color spectrum expect to see sweet pastel shades mint green baby blue light yellow lavender and bubblegum pink to follow the graphic influence of postmodernism everything will be complemented by black or white and neutral colors like tan and brown will also rise in popularity although neons ruled for most of the 2010s we won't be seeing much of them in the years to come halters one of the rare trends on this list that didn't originate from 60s mods halternick tops and dresses were tied to hippie rocker and disco fashions the braless back-bearing silhouette was embraced by younger demographics who saw it as freeing and empowering you can learn more about it in the 2000s video fringe with the rise of leather it's inevitable that we'll be seeing an increase in decorative fringe trim a lot of people swear by a fringe purse but i think a fringe jacket is classic fringe not only creates beautiful movement but it's also an ode to fashion of years past perhaps most famously the flapper dresses of the 1920s but also the hippie disco and rocker subcultures of the 60s and 70s so if a fringe jacket isn't your thing you should definitely consider getting a fringe dress they're a lot of fun large sunglasses say goodbye to the tiny non-functional sunnies of the 2010s were going big and bug-eyed in 2021. sunglasses of the 1960s were on the larger side often circular in shape and came in a wide range of colors much like the rest of the fashions of the period and in the 1970s sunglasses continued to be large in size but took on a more rectangular shape that was considered universally flattering in 2021 we'll be seeing sunglasses that take inspiration from both decades and if you want to go all out wear them with the next trend headscarves icons of the time from audrey hepburn to grace kelly were seen wearing the trend and it became a way to keep one's hair in place while also being stylish pair it with large sunglasses and you could be both eye catching yet incognito something jackie kind of depopularized and that gucci continues to employ in its styling today sequins i brought this trend up in my 2000s video and now i'm only more confident of its imminent comeback sequin dresses were a huge part of disco fashion primarily because the material took full advantage of the lighting at the discotheques sequin tops and dresses are an awesome statement piece that are perfect for any fingers crossed knights on the town we may have in 2021 if you're looking for sequin inspiration look up anything bob mackie designed for cher or diana ross what trends on this list are you most looking forward to seeing in 2021 what trends do you think i missed i hope you enjoyed this video and don't forget to like and subscribe i'll see you soon bye
