we then venom may not be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe but they certainly have their comparisons specifically in the way that the MCU has latched on the movie industry and all but taken over juror there are other movies but nothing comes close to the level of success that a Marvel movie is guaranteed to have to put this into perspective there have been a total of 46 movies - gross a billion dollars at the box office that's all time like the entire history of movies is a concept those a whopping nine of them come from under the MCU umbrella there's only been 23 MCU movies to date by the way so of the 23 movies nine of them grossed over a billion dollars in total the MCU has grossed nearly twenty three billion dollars averaging just under a billion dollars per release even the quote-unquote less successful Marvel releases still generate hundreds of millions of dollars not to get redundant with numbers but the MCU averages a billion dollars while only 46 movies ever have made that much is that not mind-blowing that's not the craziest thing I've heard today Wow still early what is the MCU so we get that it's the most successful movie franchise of all time by a hundred miles but what exactly is the MCU well it's actually a bunch of franchises under the banner of 1 mega 1 the Marvel Cinematic Universe is the home to a bevy of different characters and titles you've got Iron Man who set the whole thing off in 2008 I am Iron Man you've got Captain America Thor the guardians of the galaxy and the list goes on and on these big-name characters have their own franchises featuring standalone movies with their own storylines today there have been three Iron Man movies 3 Thor movies 3 Captain America movies 2 guardian of the galaxy movies 2 spider-man movies 2 ant-man movies and single releases from the Incredible Hulk Doctor Strange black panther and Captain Marvel each one of those has its own unique angle equipped with its own characters and its own in movie stories as well as a larger overarching storyline that spans multiple movies but here's what makes the MCU so compelling and impressive all those titles also exist within the same universe interact with one another and also follow a much larger storyline that encompasses everyone and everything that's where the Avengers come into play and that's what makes those four releases so much more important that's why Avengers and game is the highest-grossing movie of all time with Avengers infinity war coming in at number 5 on the list the very first event is coming in at number 8 and Avengers age of Ultron is sitting at number 11 say what you will about the artistic merit of these superhero movies but there's no denying how much people love them then again it helps have source material to pull from while these movies are making the genre more popular than ever right now diehard fans know that the majority of these stories have been told before in the comic books all the characters and storylines are pulled from the comics and recreated for the big screen sure Marvel Studios and Disney might tweak the plot a little bit or add their own little twist to it but for the most part they aren't creating anything a hundred percent original which some might see is cheap but it actually adds to the experience of being an MCU fan we can guess and try to anticipate what's next we pop when they introduce a familiar character that we haven't seen on-screen yet the whole thing is honestly brand-new and fresh while still hitting on the nostalgia and familiarity of something we've seen before they're taking stories that are already beloved and tweaking them just enough to make them consumable for everyone for example we just wrapped up the infinity war saga which was phase 3 of the MCU the movies did a good job of altering the source material just enough to be different for example famous is motives in the movies were almost noble he felt as though there weren't enough resources for everyone and that wiping out half of existence was the humane thing to do when put in context it's almost understandable whereas in the comics Thanos was just trying to impress a girl he had a crush on okay that kind of downplays it the girl he liked was death but whatever you'd get what I mean they didn't completely remake the comics word for word but the end inspiration to pull from long story short a literal decade of buildup leads to the Avengers versus Thanos and yadda yadda yadda to Avengers movies later the bad guys defeated everyone is safe again and we're back at square one only minus a couple of characters so what happens now the infinity war is officially done so where does the MCU pivot to next what's on the horizon with phase four there are eleven releases already slotted for phase 4 which will span until fall of 2021 the first movie to be released is Black Widow which is fascinating because she well she died in Avengers endgame so odds are this will be a flashback type of thing serving the purpose of tying up loose ends and filling in any holes rather than something that will change much of the direction moving forward sure there might be some important information from the past that alters the way we see things in the future but it's safe to assume that Black Widow won't be making a return to the present-day MCU as long as we find out what the heck happened in Budapest I'll be satisfied the film is set to take place between Captain America Civil War and Avengers infinity war and will show the titular character going up against the villain taskmaster after Black Widow comes out in May we'll be getting our first non movie MCU release with the Falcon and the Winter Soldier coming to the Disney Plus streaming platform in August it'll be the very first phase for TV show as it focuses on the newly appointed Captain America Sam Wilson teaming up with Bucky Barnes after that we're getting a whole new title the Eternals movie featuring a star-studded cast of Angelina Jolie Sal Hayek and a freshly ripped Kumail Nanjiani it tells the story of a race of immortal aliens sent to earth to protect humankind the last release of 2020 will be another Disney Plus TV series Wanda vision the show will be about Scarlet Witch and her husband vision only we've sort of got the same problem as the Black Widow movie because vision dive in Avengers infinity war unlike Black Widow which will take place in a flashback wanna vision is more likely to take place in the present day Wanda is still reeling from the loss of her beloved husband and there's no telling what kind of delusional world shall create for herself using her reality bending powers the initial images of the show look like nothing else Marvel has ever done and appears to jump between old timey families sitcom similar to the likes of I Love Lucy in the honeymooners and a modern-day MCU aesthetic Marvel might just let their creativity off the leash a little more with this one as they can play around with alternate realities with different styles and feels will see the pair living their ideal suburban lives while fighting off Wanda's harsh present-day reality at the end of the day it's all really result of Wanda's grieving and watching your delusions overtake her powerful abilities that series will also lead us into the follow-up Doctor Strange film but more on that in a moment after Wanda vision is the release of another new movie title shang-chi and The Legend of the ten rings not much has been revealed about the movie just yet aside from the three cast members and the fact that it'll be the first Asian led superhero movie it'll also be part of the greater MCU which means it'll undoubtedly have some tie-ins and relevance to the other heroes and other movies after shang-chi will be the release at the Loki TV show on Disney Plus in the spring of 2021 Tom Hiddleston is getting his own spin-off series that'll see the god of mischief jumping around through space and time after all the present-day Loki passed away in infinity war but a 2012 version of the character escaped with a space stone in Avengers end game so will the lead character of the show be the reformed version that we grew to love over the past several movies or will he be the manacle and borderline evil version from 2012 according to rumors the show will see Loki affecting some of the biggest moments in human history which sounds like a fun concept in theory but who knows how much damage he could cause still then trust me brother would you that brings us to dr. strange in the multiverse of madness which will apparently tie in with the Scarlet Witch storyline and draw from the House of M comic book source material in the comics Scarlet Witch suffers a mental breakdown as a result of losing her child and as a result creates an entirely false reality it's ultimately Doctor Strange who has to convince her to face her heartbreak deal thorough emotions rather than mask them and live in reality that could very well be the plot of this movie following a dramatic and heartbreaking conclusion to the Wando vision TV series where I'm assuming things Donen happily ever after for Wanda this will also be our first real major foray into the much talked-about highly anticipated multiverse they touched on a subject in ant-man in the last two Avengers movies but we've never really dive deep into how it works or explored the infinite possibilities it offers this Doctor Strange movie can offer fans a glimpse into some of their favorite alternate worlds it'll also be Marvel's first attempt at a horror movie which is smart for them yes they pretty much own the movie industry right now and anything else they release is guaranteed to make hundreds of millions of dollars but on the other hand we're 23 movies deep into the MCU now and at a certain point the formula is going to get stale they threw us a curveball with Thanos coming out on top and infinity war but aside from that outlier their other 22 movies have all looked and felt pretty similar with the hero facing unfavorable odds then coming out victorious I can do this all day yeah I know by switching the style up and giving their audience other flavors like TV shows and horror movies Marvel is doing their part to keep things fresh and interesting all in an effort to stay on top they know that you're either evolving or devolving and if you are evolving then you're probably devolving maintaining the status quo can't last forever so kudos to them for trying to adapt and grow this movie will also likely be one of those standalone solo hero movies that has massive repercussions throughout the entire MCU as a whole and directly affect the storyline of nearly every other hero next also in the spring of 2021 is the Disney Plus TV series what-if which will be an animated show that goes back to some of the most important moments of the MCU and see how things could have played out differently this likely won't have much of an influence on the overarching phase four storyline but it'll be fun to see our favorite parts of the last 13 years revisited and reimagined that brings us a Spider Man 3 thank goodness it was a close one for a second and spider-man almost wasn't a part of the MCU anymore as a result of some messy negotiations between Sony and Disney luckily for us all the two sides came to an understanding and Spidey is back again for a third movie starring Tom Holland apparently the character will also appear in future Sony movies which don't take place within the same Marvel Universe not sure how they'll do that but if it leads to spider-man on screen with venom then I'm all for it the last spider-man movie ended with Peters identity being revealed publicly and him being labeled a threat and a villain on the other hand he got a supercool girlfriend so I'd say pretty much evens out it'll be interesting to see where they take the story from here after the yet to be titled third spider-man movie as Thor love and thunder the interesting part about the fourth Thor installment is that a little portly star Natalie Portman as Jane Foster taking over the Thor mantle Chris Hemsworth Thor will still be involved as well Tessa Thompson's Valkyrie but the story will see someone new pick up the mighty hammer this isn't unprecedented as the comics have already done a storyline where Jane Foster becomes the new Thor regardless of how this will play out the film is being directed by Tycho with teetee so there's no doubt it'll be hilarious and awesome finally in debatably underwhelming fashion the final release set for phase 4 is the Hawkeye series on Disney Plus and fall of 2021 not much is known about the show just yet but it'll apparently feature Clint Barton training Kate Bishop to be the new Hawkeye while also touching on his time as Ronan well there you have it those are all the movies and shows set to come out over the next couple of years as part of Marvel's phase 4 there's a lot to look forward to but phase 4 isn't just a bunch of titles and release dates there's also the topic of an overarching phase 4 storyline while each of these releases will have their own storyline with their own villains and conclusions phase 4 will also have its own larger story arc the way the infinity saga stretched over phase 3 and prior according to multiple reports the MCU will transition into the Secret Invasion story for those unfamiliar it's a storyline from the comics wherein an alien race infiltrated earth in the 1990s and over the span of decades took over the personas of many superheroes and higher officials this would work in a number of different ways seeing as how they could have been dropping hints under our nose all along for all we know the seeds of the storyline have been planted since the MCU launched in 2008 and some of our favorite characters might already be alien imposters there's also the fact that the Captain Marvel movie took place in the 1990s and involved the scroll coincidentally the scroll are the aliens who infiltrate earth we even get a glimpse of them in action at the end of Spider Man far from home when Nick Fury admits to using a fake version of himself for his own benefit if they're already tricking people there's no telling how deep into the invasion the MCU already is while a secret invasion story and the subsequent Dark Avengers angles seem to be on the way there's still the question of who the next main villain will be sure each movie has their own villain to defeat but there still needs to be the bigger threat who's going to be the next Thanos it's tough to top the most powerful being in the universe where can you go from there well according to rumors there will be two main villains a phase form beyond the first will be Norman Osborn a brilliantly evil businessman who was a major player in the secret invasion source material and has been hinted at in the MCU but never featured on screen the other will be Adam warlock a superhuman from outer space who also has been hinted but not shown having one earthbound human villain in one space bound villain is a smart way to break up the dynamics of the MCU space bound heroes like Thor and the guardians of the galaxy will likely deal more with the latter while earthbound heroes like Black Panther and ant-man are more likely deal with the former there's also the off chance that Marvel goes really big and introduces an even more powerful character someone like Galactus it's possible to all that con let's snapping woke him up and now he's hungry for some worlds to eat there's still no confirmation on who the main threat will be but there are several interesting routes the studio can take and I'm sure they've already laid the groundwork for whoever it will eventually be and we just haven't noticed the signs yet so we know what to expect for phase four but let's quickly take a look at phase five and beyond there are a bunch of titles we can expect to see in the not so distant future that don't have a release date yet for example we're already overdue for another Black Panther movie it was the most successful non Avengers released by the MCU so they definitely won't want to wait too long before putting out another one we also can expect another garden to the galaxy movie for starters it always does well to box office but in the universe that's likely the franchise through which they all introduce Adam warlock it's obviously way too early to talk about any details but the next Avengers film will undoubtedly be a huge one as it ties together everything we just laid out for the last 10 plus minutes let's see if it can break the end game high score be sure to subscribe and hit that thumbs up button we'll see you next time
