foreign [Music] box today we're comparing the new Verizon 7 at 7800 X 3D head to head with amdy's previous generation 3D V cash part the 5800x 3D now the 5800 X 3D that was a hugely successful CPU for AMD because it offered premium gaming performance at an affordable price it was very power efficient and therefore it was easy to cool it wasn't reliant on premium memory for Optimum performance and best of all it could be slotted into existing am4 motherboards making it a super easy and affordable upgrade for many of you the question now is for those of you still on am4 and in need of more CPU power do you purchase the 5800x 3D allowing you to Breathe new life into your system or do you start over with a new platform supporting the shiny new 7800x 3D and then for those of you without an existing am4 system looking at building a brand new pc should you go with a more affordable option in the 5800x3d and its supporting platform or do you go all out with the new 7800 X 3D well in means they support a wide range of use cases so for more information please check the link in the video description okay for testing the 5800x 3D we used the MSI MPG x570s carbon Max Wi-Fi motherboard with G skills ddr4 3600 cell 14 32 gigabyte memory meanwhile the 7800x3d was installed on the gigabyte x670e aorus Master using the latest f11c boss version then for the graphics card we of course have the Asus Rog strix RTX 4090 OC Edition which has been benchmarked at 1080P 1440p and 4K so let's get into it first up we have Hogwarts Legacy using the ultra quality preset but with Ray tracing disabled though we will look at some RT results in a moment here we find that the game is heavily CPU Limited at both 1080P and 1440p even with the 7800 X 3D that said the newer 3D V cache CPU was 38 to 41 faster at those resolutions the margin is reduced at 4K but even so the 7800x3d was still 2 faster here or 15 faster if we compare the one percent lows now as you'd expect with Ray tracing enabled the frame rates do come well down but whereas you might have expected performance to be heavily GPU limited that's not exactly the case the added CPU load required to run rtfx sees the 7800x 3D maintain its lead delivering almost 40 percent more performance at 1080P and 36 percent more at 1440p even at 4K the newer 3D V cash part is offering a rather handy 15 performance Advantage so for those of you with higher end gpus hoping to play Hogwarts Legacy with Ray tracing enabled the 7800x3d will offer a noticeable performance boost over the 5800 X 3D in this title next up we have Marvel's Spider-Man remastered and this game plays very well using either CPU with well over 200 FPS on average at 1080P and 1440p regardless of the CPU used the 7800 X 3D was just nine percent faster at 1080P and 1440p with basically identical performance seen at 4K as you'd expect turning Ray tracing on did reduce frame rates but the margins between these two AMD CPUs remain much the same with the 7800x 3D winning by a 10 margin at 1080p 11 at 1440 pen surprisingly 12 at 4K with a massive 24 Improvement for the one percent lows moving on to fortnite which I have tested using the Epic quality settings though this probably isn't how competitive Gamers will play the game but in any case this has allowed for over 300 FPS at 1080P and here both the 5800 X 3D and 7800 X 3D produced virtually identical results even with Hardware raytracing enabled the CPU performance remained very similar with no real difference between these two 3D V cash parts that however isn't the case in The Last of Us Part one is here the 7800 X 3D was 27 fast and the 5800 X 3D at 1080p though it has to be said that both CPUs delivered highly playable performance the margin was reduced to just 7 at 1440p or 15 when looking at the one percent lows but the point is the performance here is quite similar overall and then of course at 4K we see little to no performance difference Star Wars Jedi Survivor is a famously CPU limited title though it has seen a few patches since release and here we are testing with the latest version of the game although both CPUs allowed for impressive frame rates at 1080p the 7800 X 3D was 27 faster averaging 192 FPS that margin though was reduced to six percent at the more GPU limited 1440p resolution and then basically nothing at 4K moving on to Halo infinite we see that either CPU is more than capable of powering the RTX 4090 through this title with over 200 FPS in at 1080P and then around 200 FPS at 1440p the total war Warhammer 3 Performance is also much the same using either CPU the 7800x3d managed a small seven percent win at 1080p but the 1440p and 4K results were basically identical f122 is another game that sees mostly comparable performance for example the 1440p and 4K numbers are extremely similar and in some instances such as 4K they're the same but at 1080p the 7800x30 was 22 faster and comparing the average frame rate and 31 faster for the one percent lows how much this actually matters at over 200 FPS will be for you to decide at least for this particular title but it does indicate that when more CPU limited the 7800x 3D can boost gaming performance quite dramatically using the high quality preset cyberpunk 2077 appears to be mostly GPU limited even with the RTX 4090 the 7800x3 did offer a small 9 performance bump at 1080p but other than that the two CPUs were very similar as we've seen a number of times now enabling Ray tracing does increase CPU demand and as a result the 7800x30 was able to extend its lead over the 5800x 380 to 17 at 1080p though the 1440p and 4K margins did remain much the same so that is to say here the performance was virtually identical the Callisto protocol isn't the most CPU demanding game that we currently test with so like fortnite Halo and Warhammer 3 the 5800x30 and 7800 X 3D are very similar in this title with only single digit margins seen the 5800x 3D slaughtered its way through Hitman 3 with 208 FPS on average though despite that the 7800 X 3D was 26 faster rendering 262 FPS and similar margins were seen at 1440p before the results became entirely GPU Limited at 4K with 177 FPS each if Far Cry 6 is a game that you can probably happily play at 183 FPS I'd have to imagine but if not the 7800 X 3D should suffice with 237 FPS that's a 30 increase that margin did drop to 16 at 1440p and then to just six percent at 4K of course we have included shadow of the Tomb Raider and here the 5800x ready was good for 269 FPS on average at 1080P and this saw the 7800 X 3D improved performance by just 13 to 303 FPS that margin though was reduced to 10 at 1440p and then entirely eliminated at 4K now for those of you who find 548 fps to be exactly 101 fewer frames per second than you'd like then I have good news for you the 7800 X 3D was good for 649 FPS when armed with the RTX 4090 at 1080p using the very high quality preset and that's an 18 increase for those of you counting how much it matters in this example is hard to say but I'll leave that one for you to work out the 5800 X 380 was good for 227 FPS and Horizon zero Dawn at 1080P and despite that the 7800 X 3D was still 20 faster hitting 272 FPS the 1440p margins were much the same and again it's not until we hit the 4K resolution the results end up being much the same the 5800 X 3D has previously proven to be a beast in ACC and although performance is heavily CPU limited even with the Epic quality settings we're still looking at 181 FPS at 1080P and 1440p still that did mean that the 7800x30 was around 20 faster and even 10 percent faster at 4K I'd say the 5800 X 3D is more than capable in Resident Evil 4 with over 140 FPS seen at 1080P and 1440p before becoming GPU Limited at 4K the 7800 X 3D was around 22 faster at 1080P and 1440p with just over 170 FPS so a big performance uplift there though in this example the extra frames they're not exactly required a plague Tower Requiem can be happily played at 70 to 80 FPS in my opinion though I do enjoy a high refresh rate experience and the 5800x 380 will enable that even so the 7800x30 is up to 28 faster seen at 1080P and 1440p before performance becomes entirely GPU Limited at 4K watchdog's Legion is a CPU intensive game but even so the 5800x 3D is still more than capable here with 171 FPS on average at 1080P and 1440p so performance there is heavily CPU limited but that's still even the case with the 7800 x380 despite that CPU being up to 26 faster but in this example it is limiting the RTX 49 into just over 200 FPS the rift break is a great CPU Benchmark and although I'd say the 5800 X 3D passes with flying colors pumping out almost 200 FPS at 1080p the 7800 X 3D was 24 faster and more crucially the one percent lows were boosted by 37 though if you play at 4K the difference is going to be a lot smaller as you'd probably expect then last up we have the Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 Benchmark and this saw the 5800x30 and 7800 X 3D produce the same results around 260 FPS at 1080p 200 FPS at 1440p and 130 FPS at 4K so good results overall Okay so we've taken a look at how the ryzen 7 5800x3d and 7800x 3D compare across a wide range of games now it's time to break down all of that data to get a clear picture of just how much faster the newer zn4 3D V cache part is okay so on average the 7800 X 3D was 18 faster than the 5800 X 3D so not a massive margin there but also quite a big difference for the CPU to make there were also examples of over 30 seen in Far Cry 6 and Hogwarts Legacy so the newer zen4 CPU can be significantly faster depending on the game and of course the quality settings now for those of you wondering if we focus on the one percent lows the overall margin is very similar the 7800x30 is now 20 faster on average however we are seeing margins as large as 53 seen in Hogwarts Legacy with Ray tracing enabled and I believe this margin is largely due to memory bandwidth so the ddr5 support of Zen for hands at a significant Advantage here obviously stuff like the IPC improvements also play a role but I think we're largely memory bandwidth limited with these N3 CPU we're also looking at 30 or greater gains in f122 The Last of Us and the rift breaker now as you'd expect increasing the resolution of 1440p does reduce the margins as the results become more GPU limited here the 7800x380 was just 12 faster on average though we did still see margins as great as 41 there are however now more than half a dozen examples where the margin is two percent or less resulting in the same gaming experience and it's a similar story for the one percent lows here the 7800 X 3D was 15 faster on average with seven examples where the margin was 20 or greater again it's Hogwarts Legacy with Ray tracing enabled that is somewhat of an outlier here favoring the 7800 X 3D by a whopping 50 margin then finally at the much more GPU limited 4K resolution the 5800x 3D and 7800x3d were for the most part very similar with the zen4 part delivering just four percent greater performance on average there were just four examples of double-digit margins and two of them were seen in Hogwarts Legacy with and without Ray tracing then we have Spider-Man remastered with Ray tracing and then ACC as for the one percent lows they paint a very similar picture as here the 7800 X 3D was just seven percent faster on average but again we did see much larger margins and a few of the titles tested such as Hogwarts Legacy Spider-Man remastered and the rift breaker okay so as you probably expected the 7800 X 3D is indeed faster than the 5800x 3D but the degree to how much faster may have surprised you overall I think it's fair to say that the uplift was quite substantial when CPU limited of course and there were examples of massive gains but depending on the games you play and how you play them there could be next to no improvement on that note while I did include 4K benchmarks as I know that is something many of you are interested in I do urge you to avoid focusing too heavily on them as that will almost certainly backfire on you and that's because assuming that you are planning on keeping your newly purchased CPU for quite a few years to come knowing how it compares to other options available on the market right now when CPU limited that could help you avoid disappointment in the future if more games start to look like what we see in Hogwarts Legacy for example and less like what we see in something like fortnite then the 7800 X 3D is going to end up being significantly faster than the 5800 X 3D in a few years time admittedly the 4K data could be interesting for working out if an upgrade will net you any extra performance now but realistically you can work that out on your own with a few basic diagnostic tools anyway let's move on to talk about which option makes sense for you and of course we will start by talking about the associated costs the 5800x30 is currently much more affordable at 320 us which is the current Newegg price though b h and Amazon are currently selling them for just 290 dollars but I don't expect that deal to last for much longer in any case the 7800x 3D is much more expensive at 450 us which is the MSRP for that part and what this means is you're paying at least 40 percent more for the 7800 X 3D When comparing just the price of the processor and while it was up to 40 to 50 faster depending on the game and quality settings you're typically looking at more like a 15 to 20 performance boost now a decent am4 b550 motherboard can be had for as little as a hundred dollars US whereas comparable am5 b650 boards are more like 120 to 140 us then there's the memory a ddr4 3600cl16 kit in a 32 gigabyte capacity that will set you back 80 to 90 us while ddr5 6000cl32 kits they cost 105 us so at minimum you're looking at a 40 US premium for the motherboard and memory when going with the 7800x3d making the total cost of the CPU motherboard memory 35 greater at 675 us opposed to just 500 us for the 5800 X 3D combo of course if you're already on the am4 platform using an older zen zen Plus or Zen 2 CPU the upgrade to the 5800x3d makes a lot of sense it's very affordable at around 300 us and will offer a massive performance upgrade for gamers essentially you can pay 3 120 us or less for the 5800x 3D and slotted into your existing system or pay almost 700 to replace your motherboard memory and CPU with the 7800x3d combo so I think given what the 5800x30 offers upgrading to that part makes the most sense for existing am4 owners which is why that process has been so wildly popular now for those of you in need of an entirely new gaming system I think extending the budget by around 35 to 40 for the 7800x 3D combo is the way to go it sounds like a lot but in reality it's less than 200 us and for that you get more performance now a platform that can be upgraded in the future and ddr5 support which should prove beneficial in many of the upcoming games also the motherboard and memory costs are now so close that they don't really weigh that heavily on the purchasing decision and in my opinion new system Builders looking at spending 300 or more on the CPU should be no longer considering am4 based on previous benchmarks the ryzen 7 700 which costs 330 dollars is generally faster than the 5800 X 3D so if not the 7800x3d you should certainly consider the 7700 over the 5800 X 3D and maybe that's a CPU that I can add to this data set if you guys are interested so let me know Below in the comments
