All the things wrong with my budget Ariel Atom

alright guys showing different bike some beers and if you guys did missed the last week's video we got this Adam we bought it from 74 auto from Missouri it's shipped to us it's not quite running right I'm gonna tell you everything that's wrong with the atom we've had it for about a week we got just a little to dive into a little bit more so this front piece cracking it big cracking it no big deal this piece this little front clip we can bend that back no problem and it does have some more fiberglass right there that's that's broken it's got a piece of fiberglass right down here that should connect to there that's broken and then it's got this off right here in the tub that's that's broken now when we when we got this the first thing we did was I had really bad smelling gas we put we put we flushed it out put put better gas in it but what it was doing was it was getting about 4,000 rpms and then just I was falling on his face and what it felt like with fuel cut now we got a lot of good advice from you guys saying you know one guy even called me said it might be a drag race two-step thing it might be it might be this might be this all good possibilities all right so this is the Ariel Atom too this was made by Bram oh they made about a hundred fifty of them I think I said before Jay Leno has the exact same car his VIN number is zero zero zero one that's the first production of the run and this one's last one it's 50 now I only knew that from the listing of when we bought it from at the time when we were working on this I we couldn't find the VIN plate the VIN plate number so this is with they made about ten of these that had the honda the honda you tec motor and then all the other brand MO ones had the GM LS j 2.0 supercharged which is the same motor in the in the ayat' Saturn Ion redline but also the the Chevy Cobalt SS same variation of the motor they put in the in the slingshots and also in the DAF Goblin so it's a great motor they get a lot of power this is a great tuner and off-road off-road engine so it was not running good hit about 4,000 rpms fall on its face I'm not a mechanic I changed the fuel wow that was probably about the extent of what I know how to do so what we did was it's basically a Chevy ish motor it's a power plan of a Chevy so we called our local Faulkner Chevy dealership and they said they look at it ice we're loading up stakes in a mechanic I don't think it's gonna scrape at the bottom but it might [Applause] I put the other ramps down yeah honestly that's what I would do it's gonna be way too close a lot of times you buy a vehicle and it's just it's fine the way it is I buff now I do whatever I can do like in an hour any big modifications or changes I never do because it's just gonna lose money on it but the Adams gonna be different I just saw probably where tires today or whatever parts I need I just got I just got an email from a company called skunk works there in the UK and they make a lot of aftermarket parts to the atom and they make a fiberglass bonnet and they make the like whole nose cone they make they make the spoiler and the front splitter and stuff like that so that I think I think I'd get all the parts that I need for like maybe 1,500 bucks 2,000 bucks takes trips only time out strats I use to test where my area look I think they'll be out of figured I'm sure it's a dumbest thing and it's probably put up to the computer and they'll be like oh this sense there's bad it's honestly probably Mike said try something with another sensor like the vacuum pressure sensors what it's doing is if it hits like maybe three or four thousand rpms it just kind of calls a while and it stays but before it does that it makes like a from from the intent like bah and then if you do it but one time I heard it I was like yes it sounds like the supercharger whine but happening all at once so they put their master tech guy named Eric awesome guy they put their master tech on it and when they were checking it when they were checking it in they needed the VIN number for it we couldn't find the VIN number on the actual thing so I just looked up Ariel Atom to found someone else's VIN number that had the last digits of 17 and I said take this VIN number and change it from 17 to 50 because they actually need the VIN number to connect to the e to the ECU they said when they looked into it that worked it connected but they couldn't actually access all the things because of the brand Moe codes Ariel Atom actually licensed the atom to a company called paramo in 2007 and 8 to build these things and then later with license to another company I think grandma's in Oregon or something like that alright so I just got a call from the dealership but I knew this would happen they were like I'm not gonna see it so like Tuesday or Wednesday so we dropped it off today on Monday 3:30 they're like we're gonna seven hours yeah two hours yeah we have three people working 86 hours no guys it's divvied up over 32 texts yeah they're all just like we've all been working you know we all had our diagnosis which included having to take it for a test drive obviously you're gonna get a bathroom in the 2001 miles on the one you dropped it off so hopefully uh they call me soon and today or tomorrow they're like we got it fixed but let's order some parts work so they weren't able to access everything inside the car all the computer stuff that like they normally would but they were accessed most of it and what they were finding was when he took it for a spin they plugged in a they plugged in a fuel pressure monitor to it and they could see that when it was running fine and it was about 50 56 almost 60 psi of pressure and then we know when we hit that what felt like fuel cut it would just drop to like 16 so that at this point it's not getting enough fuel why is it not getting in a fuel well let's let's do the first thing and let's look at the fuel pump so to get to the fuel pump you can see the fuel tank is actually right here the fuel tank is in here so to get to the fuel pump they yank the seats out and they actually pulled the firewall off which is these rivets right here which actually them they actually rivet it back in there it's kind of surprising they did a good good good job it was super cheap there's only like 320 boss them to do all this stuff took him three days to do it and what they found when they pulled out the the fuel pump is you got the fuel pump it's inside of a canister the can and you take it out of the canister and there's a sock it's like I take a filter it's not a real sock but like a sock and that's that's the first fuel filter that was covered in like black sandy stuff and what that's from is that's from the the fuel pump gasket it just kind of dissolves inside there was I was a design flaw it should be cork and so they they cleaned that off there was another sock inside that stock that stock actually looked pretty good and the pump inside that they said look perfect and just when it was sucking up that much that much fuel that the sock was stopping it from doing it they they called me up they told me I was what the problem was at first I said well just replace the fuel pump and then he were sure be he's like there's no nothing got in the fuel pump even the stock before the fuel pump was good it was just restricting the the fuel from getting in there we went and picked it up they said it was stupid fast I couldn't wait to drive it I went and picked it up it was fun but it wasn't stupid fast it wasn't that like insane you know Clarkson rip your face off type of fast and I honestly the the Viper felt it significantly faster than what this was feeling but it was fun so I took out with my buddy that night and we were we were driving around you know just cruising doing Ariel Atom stuff and then you know we download an app to see how fast we can get the 0-60 now the 0-60 on this car should be around three seconds now with these tires and you know I'm not thinking we're gonna get three seconds that night but I'm thinking we're gonna get something close we were barely getting faster than five seconds so it felt it felt much more like a naturally aspirated slingshot or the are naturally aspirated DF goblin it felt like it wasn't boosting at all so and with those kind of numbers you know 0-60 in like 4.6 seconds that actually makes sense so we took it over to my buddy shop he plugged into the obd2 to measure the intake intake pressure which would be the the supercharged boost pressure and we actually saw there's two codes in there the two codes were turbosupercharger bypass valve control unit open and then mass or low airflow in circuit low input so with that that first one is saying that the supercharger bypass valve is open it'd be like a blow-off valve just being open which means it's not sending any of the boost actually to the engine it's just releasing it all out so you can hear the supercharger whine and it was making its noise it just wasn't getting any of that boost into the into the intake which is exactly what I thought it was doing I'm not trying to pry or say that I'm good at troubleshooting or anything cars I'm not it was just a coincidence I like that that's what it really does what it felt like so the next day yeah what's up what's gonna say let me uh let me let me show you a little bit what I'm talking about actually [Music] [Applause] so the next day I wake up and I actually took my son to school he was really excited about that the next day I wake up I'm driving it and I'm like man this thing's running really good it seems running there's still something going on with there it'll do a little stutter so I got to check the check engine light again but it's running really good and I'm thinking mandus I don't know so maybe something solved so I called my buddy Mike and what he was thinking he's like well maybe he was in let me be he kind of went into a limp mode you know sat for a while had bad gas in it wasn't running right it was getting like fuel cut you know I mean something like that's gotta throw a check engine light and throw it into a goofy mode that's what we think happened so then it was running really good the next day it was consistent the day before I would every once in a while be like whoa that feels pretty good and then the other time to be like well it's kind of what's going on so so at this point I want to figure out what kind of boost isn't actually pushing out now I know stock stock Chevy Cobalt SS is supposed to be pushing around 12 pounds of boost I'm assuming this is gonna be a little bit more not really sure how much more so what we did was I took this thing for a spin well first we cleared the codes first we cleared the codes and then I took this thing for a spin and it was running really really good and we were measuring the boost and it was coming in about 15 pounds of boost which is you know three pounds more than stock and for a light car like this felt really really good I'll show you what it felt like it felt a little bit like this up here hold on it felt just a little bit and we'll just kept to the speed limit like this that's about what it felt like so it's feeling pretty good I do want to get a boost gauge on here so I can measure that and I'm also trying to figure out what else has been done to it there are some modifications it's really important to do and there are other modifications that are just for for power what sucks is I don't know where your angle is but from my angle I actually can't see my tachometer the top half of my tachometer or the top half of my speedometer because of where the steering wheel is if the steering was a little bit bigger in diameter maybe I could but then it might get no the way of other stuff what's incredible about this car and even with bad tires and even though I don't feel I don't know it very well the handling is insane there's just there's no wait really throwing you around and when the back end kicks out it's just like a go-kart it's like you're driving a go-kart where you know it's it kicks out a little bit and it straightens back in just perfectly it makes you look like you know what you're doing we got all the lights all the lights and everything working it's quick but one thing we need to do is we need to get it on the dyno I want to see what kind of power it's quit now I'm gonna guess around maybe I doubt it's more than 250 I would be I'd be very surprised to fight here that'd be idiots more than 250 I would like this thing I think 350 I might be happy let's go back to the shop I wanted to show you something I've actually I have we've been digging in trying to figure out more of the story I'm trying to figure out I want to know the story of this car who it came from what happened why what's been done to it what you know I'm kind of in very many ways I'm kind of doing a blind build I don't there's so little I know about it in a car like this people people do mods people change it up no there's a lot of stuff you can see I'm dying to figure out what actually happened to and why the guy let the insurance pay him off for it all right the the next part of this clue we found it to be found in a couple days ago so let's go back to the shop I want to show you can't wait alright let's go see that our best thing I wanted to show you guys on the computer it's also I'll kindly leak a little bit of quant I'm not sure where it's coming from but we'll figure that out so I when I was talking I was talking to UM to the guys from from 74 Auto and I asked him some information about it and they said why don't you just look up the bring a trailer listing and I was like are you kidding me if he goes on bring a trailer so I looked it up what we find is that that's all right it used to be orange that piece is still orange it's missing that where'd that go it's missing that where'd that go same wing where are those tires at and we started digging into this and when was it in June 27 2018 this car sold for $45,000 it had 20 1901 that so it may it may have just had a lot of people like you know estimate down so maybe who knows how long the guy who bought it had it the engine was rebuilt early 2018 with new valve seals piston rings rod bearings top end gaskets hardware adam has two sets of tires and wheels those tires are destroyed pretty much there's a video of the guy driving the atom and there seemed rebuilding the engine he also shows the CARFAX and it had about a thousand miles on the fresh rebuild so I'm also I can assume that you pull the engine out you're gonna put a new clutch in there I don't know what modifications he did to the engine and then here's just every picture from every possible angle I want to know where those wheels are red somewhere okay so somewhere those wheels aren't so some of those wheels exist somewhere that cow exists because I just I just want I bought that piece and I bought that piece on line and from the UK from place called skunkworks and they're shipping it over to me but if we can find the original ones I mean all the damage was right here so I don't nothing would have happened to that in that piece and there's an extra set of wheels floating around some it's rockin the Montana tax what we did was we called that company a AMR performance and they actually do well they actually do dyno tuning they couldn't give me any information on who it is but they did say that Adam was at their shop at some point time in the past two years where I contacted bring a trailer they would not give me this guy's information I've contacted that AMR place they would not give me his information I said here's my number can you just get can you call him in came atonement say hey the guy that has your atom now once it just wants to talk to you so what we know is that at this point the atom was in perfect shape Dan was a great shape fresh engine fresh free built somewhere between six hundred miles from this guy selling it and me buying it someone bought it for forty five thousand dollars kind of wrecked it I'm a it's just fiberglass work and then an insurance company bought it from him who knows what the payout was and then it ends up with me so I want to I want to talk to this guy see what he did to it and I also want to talk to the guy who bought it and see where those extra parts are so there's some parts are and see what happened to it and see why you sold it and there's a lot of information but um but we're getting close I'm super excited then we ordered that front nose piece I front bonnet and in the back piece I think maybe some other small stuff and then [Music] Monday night we ordered these tires you gonna be out the stickiest tires these are the oil proxy r88 ours these are supposed to be insane now normally on the back is to 225 we went we stayed with the same size on the front 205 50 15 on the back but a little bit wider with 245 I'm taller they should still fit on the wheel what are these on Monday night they came in Tuesday morning from the Tiger Rag which is in the same tie rack does not pay me to say that but I if they want to please just send money my way I would happy to I've been using tyreq for a long time so next step I'm gonna get that thing on the dyno I want to get some gauges on it to actually monitor so you see what it to make sure it is consider that those check engine lights aren't popping up and that it is continue putting out good boost and I want to figure out the modifications I want to contact the guy that owned it if anyone knows the guy that owns I want to get a hold of that guy we gotta get we gotta find that guy stay tuned for the neck in the next
