[Music] so which do you think would be fastest over a standing quarter-mile sprint the 475 B HP 550 kilogram Ariel Atom v8 something that appears to be quite astonishingly unhinged called a BMW hp4 Super Bowl or Citroen ds3 we said this is no ordinary sitting ds3 of course it's named Boeing's X Games winning rallycross ds3 and it is 110 percent bonkers I mean just look at and listen to this unfortunately is a bit damp on the day which meant that the two-wheel-drive Adam despite being pretty much the fastest accelerating Road car there is was always going to struggle for traction however it does have a few tricks up its sleeve such as multi adjustable launch and traction control systems I've been playing around the charge the systems actually in its because it is kind of so damp we need a lot of traction control and unfortunately with being rear-wheel drive only rather than the four-wheel drive at the ran across car and one wheel drive at the bike off the line this thing stands no chance but time let's play the tricks and see how we go so to engage the launch control system you select first gear press the launch control button for a little bit and now hopefully when I press the throttle it's going to sit at about five six thousand reps [Music] so here's a practice run that I did in the autumn when it was a touch dryer that is absolutely incredible what that feels like I cannot believe that you're allowed to drive his car on a road and there's got numberplate I mean you do that and you do it just once and II just think there is no way the bike or the rallycross car is going to go faster than that it just feels as if somebody's there 1/8 to set the soil off and then you're attached to it [Applause] I've got control adhere that depending on conditions and grip levels I can change the amount of boost I want an amount of rpm I want some giving launch a sigh it means that basically I just engaged the first year yeah bring the class to a biting point hold the handbrake and then that way reducing it takes all the slack out of any transmission status in knowing it makes everything tight and then I just my finger that launch control bar full for a hole and drop clutch simply let about and then frantically start taking gear it's less than a second between shifts yeah so it's just don't don't don't don't so buddy you'll reach e6 halfway down yeah halfway down I'll just hang one gear looking where everyone knows how much space do you running today probably about three bar grind yeah which gives you much about five six to your spell not to talk about six hundred foot-pounds of torque four-wheel drive obviously yeah good stuff [Music] and that's it zero to 100 in less than five seconds when it's dry with six gear changes gone just like that incredible incredible weathers until you see what the four page before actually has launch control if Judy are just finally easier to balance it on it's much the same as a car you know you you're balancing the clutch the throttle and wheel spin yeah but with the bike you actually add wheelies into the equation so in an ideal world you have the front wheel just hovering off the ground and that means you've got all your weight on the rear tire the most grip possible and it goes away in the wet today it's it's a fine line between just hovering the front enough and if brake interaction and wheel spinning away so as you he does have traction control yes on the H before BMW has a rain mode sport mode race mode and a slick mode and the slick mode is adjustable eight ways by the way of Stanford when are you using the rainbow today or I wouldn't sound cleverer than it you know by the time you've if you break traction and the traction control thing can't see it you're already losing that time so it's easier to have it all off and just rely on keeping it on the right side of grip to try and stay ahead of that damn rallycross car [Music] is what it feels like being strapped to it soaking-wet practice run doesn't look that dramatic does it but he actually hit 150 miles an hour right there [Music] [Music] that rallycross car if I get my best possible start neck-and-neck with it and if I get any little bit you know a bit of wheelspin a bit of wheely gaps when you straight away even on the bright side you can go very right I can go very wrong so I can get very slightly wrong and it will just be a terrible start I'll sit on the spot and the Wills of the spoon all I can get it perfect to do and just be gone he was saying I think with the gearing of the rallycross car he saw he's got that initial jump with him once he's having to go through the gears worse I think he was up to sixth gear and I'm still in second gear so hundred miles an hour in first not the power ish the setup and the actual traction yeah which in obviously after sixty one hour power starts coming to play and no it doesn't he's not as fast but that's overseeing the restricted Salveson if I took the restrictor off and broke the rules of rallycross it'd probably be anything so fun the answer to that question we asked in which as fast as a straight and standing quarter mile shootout what is your answer [Music] the bike in the ds3 it was super close but unfortunately a term with its track-day tires and rear-wheel drive just got completely and utterly spanked here's what that felt like from onboard [Music] so here's the data we recorded during some slightly drier solo runs earlier in the day and as you can see even then the atom got thumped and the bike was the undisputed king so I make
