hello and welcome to my channel today i'm going to talk to you about shading in affinity designer i got here two basic shapes that i just made up out of um a few points as you can see and let's add some colors actually let's make a gradient and let's assume that we got the light coming out from the top left corner of the screen from like a bit behind our shape so yeah um well not exactly this car i think i'll make this uh what it can be it can be a rock i'll make it alien pink color ish yeah so and to add a highlight i just make white in this second shape and add gaussian blur to it just drag all the way to the max almost no we need more like that change the opacity a bit and now we can edit the shape to our liking so let's see here let's maybe um yeah do something like that we can drag it all the way up there this needs to be a little bit smaller and we can also add some points to it to make it look even better this is uh some just you know some basic uh stuff you can obviously go above and beyond with it i'm just showing you how you can actually achieve such results in a really quick way and this is some you know if we're up against some other material it can reflect some light back on our object so that's why i'm making this uh bottom highlight and i didn't draw any other shapes yet i just edited them this one and yeah to illustrate let's make um a shadow on the ground yes something like that it's too dark let's uh lighten it up a bit and it already pops out you see what i'm talking about obviously it's far from perfect and we can edit it in many other ways so let's do just that and first of all we can edit our highlight to actually match the shape of this um what is that rock yeah of this pinkish rock so let's add a bit more points and and drag some of their own ones yeah and make it like that and um it's too flat to my taste this rock i mean so uh let's also edit the gradient a bit um at a point another point right here and as you can see it's of slightly slightly different tone and when you're doing such things don't be afraid to experiment you can try things out and if they don't work you know just ctrl z and that's all uh go a few steps back so yeah i'm adding another highlight like so and then let's also change its shape and yeah well let's just fast forward my experiments and by the way you can add shadows just the same way that you add highlights like i'm doing right now this is um to put the rock into some context let's create a scene and actually yeah we got the layers um uh in the wrong order let's put all the highlights and other stuff inside our base shape and now let's add some more elements to the scene like it's floating in space let's add the planet and yeah some base stuff like oceans and continents and some glow and maybe a few stars and yeah that's a that's fast forward again [Music] i skip the part where i put the texture on it i'll maybe make another video about textures because it's a large topic and here i edit the glow around our space rock [Music] to just uh make a fiery trail like it's actually entering the atmosphere or just touching it you know and you can obviously work on such scenes um a lot and just retouching it adding smaller details you know like i'm doing right now and i could add probably some rocks flying off cracking the cracks in the surface and other things like that to make it look more natural but this is really an endless process since uh you know like they say artists can never be satisfied with the final results that they get there's always ways to improve but uh let's just stop for now with this um project and um yeah if you like such content um subscribe to my channel i'll make more of these videos and yeah well see you in the next one
