welcome back to keep on creating I'm Mike from my t-shirt printers let's create something today we're gonna take on a victor monogram logo design in affinity designer that was a mouthful the good news is affinity designer has just extended this half-price offer which is awesome so now you can still go ahead and get your half-price infinity designer which are still only currently about 30 bucks which works out to about 30 pounds now as I go through making more and more of these reviews on affinity designer I'm actually finding it to be a pretty powerful graphic design piece of software considering I've been using graphic design software since macromedia freehand days in adobe illustrator from 1987 yep things have come a long way let's jump into today's vector tutorial the first thing to do is get a new page open so we're gonna hit up here which is affinity design I go file new and get that page open for this we can just make this actually make a square one for this one so I'm gonna have 400 and 300 and all this other stuff can just stay the same so it's gonna create the page now I have turned on my rulers and if you want to turn on your rulers what you got to do is go viewed and sure rulers I'm gonna make some central marks that we know kind of where we are in the central wires of things when we're designing our logos let's just make that run up to 200 and the 200 mark so it's just got 200 and 200 now mine aren't showing up so I'm going to go show guides and there we go my cards I can actually see them and then another thing on top of this one I'm gonna lock that this guy's because currently we can actually drag those lines all over the place and that's not something we want to be doing while we're designing our logo so I'm gonna go to lock lights now we can't drag these lines they are stuck kaput where they are they're not gonna move we're off to a great start wait what you you haven't even started yet the next part is getting a font or some text in here for a monogram logo so let's just hit T which is the text tool or you can just go over here and it says artistic text tool it's quite a name to call it an artistic text tool so I'm just going to click over here and we're going to use the letters K C for keep on creating and it gives us those little nodes over there and I'm just going to drag them without holding shift or anything I'm just drag proportionally so that we can size it up and see what we actually doing I'm just going to head on up here to I move tool click on that I'm just gonna reposition it more this to the center we're gonna have to redo this in a second now this is not the font I'm going to be using I want to use a font called a lardo now I'm probably saying that completely wrong but who knows how they spell these font names anyway so this is the font I'm going to be working with you now first thing we can do with this font is we're going to convert it to curve so there's two ways we can convert occurs we can go come on into it or you can hit it up to layer and drop down here where it says convert to curse and that's what we want then next thing we want to do is head over to our layers palette over here and it's currently in a group and just for ease of working with this I'm just going to take these the C and the K and take them out of the script so you can just drag it off to the side and do the same for the case out of it so I'm gonna drag it off to the side and now my C is going back in there it's gonna drag that off to the side and you can see now it's out of that group let's just delete that group folder and now they're independent of one another so firstly let's concentrate on this K I'm gonna bring the K into the central position and I'm just going to zoom in so you want to go spacebar and come on and then just zoom in it's getting this whole space bar and just get my little hand tool that's a nifty little trick you just hold spacebar and you can just a zoom around your screen like this which it makes it quite easy to navigate your screen now with your case licked it just with the move tool which is this tool up here I'm gonna select the letter A on my keyboard and that brings up my node tool which is this tool over here I'm just gonna drag over those nodes over there of that side of the K and I'm gonna hold shift while dragging this out and you can see it's kind of dragging it away so I just that's exactly what I want I just want to drag them away now the problem is here starting to look like a little bit of a little bit of an H so with my case still selected I'm gonna keep those nodes up with the node tool which is a I'm gonna slick those nodes over there and drag them downwards while holding shift so we still get that sort of that K effect going here you can tweak out these little points here if you want because you can see it's got a slight little curve there style okay there but for now that's looking pretty good so with my move tool selected I'm going to bring that back into the center and that is my case or tip let's bring over the see I'm just gonna bring the scene just to here at the moment and I'm gonna get my node tool again so I'm gonna push a and these nodes here I'm gonna take this note of ya and I'm actually just going to tuck it in a little bit and likewise for this one here and tuck it in little bit so they kind of run parallel to one another then I'm gonna slip these two nodes over here and I'm gonna drag them closer to this bottom section now what I want to do is basically slick all these nodes up here and I want to tuck it underneath this area over there so I want to take it and let's put it to put it about here likewise for the bottom just drag a nice mark here all those and drag it in to about the there now to make sure it's centered which it is you can see those little notes there that's marking my center point that's cool I'm just going to drag it in so sort of overlapping my okay get my note tool again and just select all this side off the left side of my seat and I'm going to click in while holding shift and drag it over my K logo so it's nicely overlapping there right so there we go a little bit of center drag it in so it's just on that center point there we go now my cam I see you're overlapping let's make them intertwine now your new skills can take you anyway vacation so to give that intertwined effect that's just zooming again with spacebar and come on just gonna go right in here so we can really get in there and first thing I'm gonna do is just take our color swatches over here and I'm going to take out I'm actually going to just bring up some colors here again because it's just easy to work with colors I find anyway it's gonna make it red I'm going to flip those around and take out this full color yesterday full color there you can either click over here or you can click over there and then I'll take make sure there's a line in there I'm gonna get this marquee tool up here which is M if you actually want to cycle through these different shapes just keep them pushing em and it's actually cycles through the square the ellipse tool and this rounded edge rectangle tool we want this square to the square rectangle tool up here and now what I'm gonna do right here so I'm just positioning my cursor there so those two little bits of just touching the edges of that other science it can just see accession that touching the top of the sea and the edge of the K I'm just gonna drop it there and just just make this stroke a little bit wider so it unless you see it okay so we'll just make it with some around there that's cool and I'm going to now get my move tool which is V and hold alt and click and drag that across here just position it nicely central over there I'm gonna hold shift slick both of those boxes hold alt and and we're now going to drag it down while holding shift that just keeps it nicely in line with everything and I'm just gonna pop them right there cool now with all of them selected I'm happy with exactly how they're falling it's gonna scurvy down my swatches and I'm gonna flip them around so they're solid blocks now obviously what we're gonna look at is what areas you want to overlap and what areas we want to underlap so looking at this meter here I'm thinkin maybe we should say well these two definitely go together so I'm going to hold shift I'm gonna click that one hold shift and click this one over here so I've got those two selected I mean here I'll up see here to this Pathfinder tool and I'm going to click on add so those two are together I'm gonna click these two opposites over here and I'm going to click Add there so basically these two shapes are basically one shape now and those two shapes they are basically one shape now so that's what we wanting so with this one let's select this block over here hold shift select I'll see we're gonna hit it up here to our Pathfinder and I'm gonna hit the subtract and you'll see it punches that's C out now I'm gonna do the exact same I'm gonna slick the red blocks again and I'm going to select our K graphic because I'm gonna stick that K graphic and I'm gonna go - so you can see now it's going under here over there under here and over there so that's the start of that one there this is just zoom out of this quick okay there we go so I'm just zooming out there now the quick key to zoom out is just come on zero and it kind of centers your page and so your full width of your page and that's that's there so that's okay you're pretty cool right now but let's add some more always wanting to add more let's add some more to this monogram victor logo so the next thing we want to do is add some ticks running on the top over here and the bottom over here now where these guidelines that we added and actually really come in handy because what we can do we know exactly I'll sent a point so let's go get our ellipse tool I'm just gonna push em in em and you can see our lips tool shows over here now we're gonna head to the center point so you can see I'm just making my little cursor here go right in the center of everything I'm going to click and start dragging so you can see it's actually dragging to one side I'm gonna hold command and I'ma hold shift and you can see it snaps to that perfect circle so let's make it to about there and to see what are we actually doing I'm gonna hit here to the swatches I'm just gonna flip I follow my swatch around so we can see how far we are going so you can see yeah let's just bring them in a little bit tighter so I'm just holding command and shift and I'm just breaking in and a little bit there now what I want to do is get some ticks written on the top of here first so let's get our text tool up so I'm gonna go over here to our text or just push T now when you hover over the edge of this you can actually see it gives us T with a little bit of a swoosh under it normal that's your normal logo which if I click over here and we will just get normal text but this allows us to write on this path so I'm going to click over here and let's write on key [Music] creating alright so you can see it's gone Connor this way around yes so basically what we want to do is I'm gonna drag that little green triangle it snap it over here I'm gonna gray this red triangle nice snap it over there now what I'm gonna do is select my text so I'm just double double double clicking or triple clicking it and I'm gonna click OK up here and go center line so it's see a center line but of course it's kind of facing the wrong way and this is where there's a really neat trick in affinity designer which actually makes it a lot quicker then illustrator is you hit up here where it says baseline and you can see this little button over here reverse text path if I just click on that boom it just flips to the other side which is fantastic now let's just change the style of font of here I won broum town boom town that's the one I wanted but there's a boom town and I also want to adjust the spacing between the letters which is called tracking so to do that and bring up your character palette just hit on a PA little a button says character if I click on that you can see it comes up with this character palette and that's what we are looking for so to adjust either the size or the tracking in this you can see over here this is your tracking so we can just adjust that up or down so we say something like 50% it really starts adjusting up I'm just gonna hover my mouse over this area here and just scroll upwards and you can see as I scroll it's starting to widen out those letters but I also want this font to be a bit bigger so I'm going to take my fonts let's just go say let's make it 16 okay so that's looking pretty cool right there now what happens if I now want to make some more text run at the bottom over here it's gonna go over here select my move tool I'm going to make a copy of this list I'm just gonna go come on see and then I'm gonna go command V and basically I've made another copy off that takes that we've just created now I'm gonna double click that double click it or triple click it this little red triangle here I'm just gonna completely drag it around to the other side and this green triangle I'm gonna drag all the way around to the opposite side and I'm just going to adjust that red one back there now the reason why I had to take it up here and take it back down and so I could select both of those and adjust them both now similarly how we wanted this to run on the opposite side we're gonna do that exactly the same so I'm just gonna hit back up here where it says baseline and click on this reverse text possum and do that and you can see it goes to the correct way around but one thing to note here is that the keep on creating is sitting on the outside of the circle and a keep on creating here is sitting on the inside of the circle we want this to sit on the outside of the circle so how do you do that another cool function an affinity designer is you just hit up here to this baseline and you can adjust it as much as you want so we just wanted touching then out of the line there so that's exactly where I want it these quick functions just make it so easy to adjust things I know it illustrator you have to kind of like adjust your baseline and then adjust your tracking to kind of make it fit but this just makes it really really easy right so let's just change this text on the bottom here I'm going to write in stablish and I hope I've spoiled the ride establish 28:20 that's cool there okay so that's looking pretty cool as a simple logo at the moment but let's just carry on adding some elements to really give this some punch so we're gonna get my ellipse tool up again so I'm just gonna push em a few times to get my lips tool which is this tool over here and kind of go to that center point again which is there and when I start clicking and dragging out while holding alt and you can see it gives us that circle from the center now that's what I'm looking for right there now what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna hit the V and then I'm going to go to layer and convert to curves all that come on enter and what I'm gonna do I hit the letter A which brings up my node tool and I'm gonna say somewhere around about here and you can see it gives us that line so the intersect line I'm just gonna click there so it adds a node I'm gonna click here so it adds a node some around about you know trying to keep it equal and I won't click here and I'm gonna click yeah now what I'm gonna do is hold shift and select those nodes that we just created so I'm gonna stick those so make sure we've got all four nodes selected I'm gonna hit up here which is action and the first little button is his break curve so I'm gonna click on that okay now I'm going to slip my move tool which is V and I'm going to deselect and reselect these little areas here that I don't want so I don't want that area there because it's overlapping our text and I don't want this area here because it's overlapping our text now we've got these lines running to the sides of our text obviously we can change this to black if you want just make sure you got your stroke selected and I'm just going to change it to black you command a little bit thicker and that looks pretty cool okay so the next thing let's add some little bits to this text so here so it's just zoom in and I'm just gonna get my pen tool which is P or this tool over here I see it says pen tool p and i'm going to draw a straw line here so holding shift and clicking okay I'm just gonna push V and let's make this white so we can actually see it and I'm just going to deselect over there and let's draw another line the store another line here okay I'm gonna draw there and it's just pulled it to the center a bit okay cool and I'm gonna draw another line over here I'm just gonna deselect quick by selecting off the page and I'm gonna select about here and make sure it's sort of sensitive just holding shift the whole time so it's all nice and ninety degrees that's cool I think I've gone a little bit too high here so I'm just gonna hit a and I'm gonna stick those two nodes a hold shift and just drag down slightly and I want a little bit away from that area there so likewise just got my node tool and just gonna drag that a little bit out there okay I want another line over here so I'm just going to get my move tool which is V and I'm going to sleek this hold alt drag it downwards that's cool and then I'm just going to put the same move - I'm just gonna extend the Sun down a little bit so I'll just grab that node and done the exact same and I want another line over here so I'm just gonna have a pin tool again which is P I'm going to click about here and just just hold shift and click the cool okay so that's cool I'll just sure want anything here for now yeah okay so I'm just gonna deselect that and I'm gonna zoom out let's just hide these guides for now so view I'm going to show guys and I'm gonna take them away so that's looking pretty cool as it is but we are not to stop there let's select all our white lines I missed it all these white lines here okay and I'm gonna head on over to our brushes and I've got this engraving options installed and this is experiment with this one that looks pretty cool so number 64 and then graving and that looks sweet and likewise for this line over here I made the exact same and I'm gonna select that yes so say we wanted to change up the colors here and completely invert them from black to white so I have a black background well I know that that's a field that's a full that's a fill and that's a full so we're going to change all of those to white okay and then these these lines here these are curves so I'm gonna change those two curves there to a white as well and on these curves here which is that inside parts that we created I'm gonna select all of those just hold shift and click at the top and on weight make all of those stroke cutters black now how do you know what stroking what's full you can see here basically that's my stroke and there was no fool there and we knew that from early on and we created these items so now what I want to do is just gonna head over here it says add layer I'm just gonna click on Adler and drag this layer all the way to the bottom so this is actually gonna be my background layer so let's just label that background layer so we know exactly what that is okay I'm gonna head over here to my square tool my rectangle tool I'm just gonna zoom out a little bit and I'm just gonna make a huge rectangle behind this so that's just created a stroke we want that as a fill and just flip those around take away that key light and there we go so that is now a logo on a black background let's just add one more little thing which is gonna make a new layer a pf4 and there we go and make sure I've got white as a fill just gonna add little I think bolts yes I must go and just make sure it's white okay so keep on creating and there is a finished monogram a Victor styled logo now you've made an awesome design cut it up and it could look like this on a t-shirt if you try Definity designer and what do you think of it let me know in the comments below don't forget to head on over to our
