it is finally time to do what i have been waiting to do i've been waiting for this day and that is to get this side yard smooth and level super smooth got a pretty big low spot right here kind of dips down another low spot right in there and then everywhere i trench for irrigation you can kind of see the the trench lines run right through here and they are darker they run all the way down through this way they are pretty low and the grass is longer here because it's lower and the grass the real mower doesn't cut perfectly on this and they are just it's darker through here so i want to get this built up so that it is smooth all across this lawn so i'm going to be leveling this lawn using sand and we're going to talk a little bit more about that here in just a little bit i've got that but the first step that we need to do is actually aerate so i'm using this a little manual aerator this is the corona not related to the virus but it actually doesn't do a bad job now if i was doing a large area i'd get a big machine to do this um but i've got about 1200 square feet i believe any more than 1500 i'd probably go with a machine but everyone says they have issues with these things clogging this is my first time using it and i have not really had issues clogging i did and i do recommend this if you're going to aerate get a deep watering the day before or even the morning of if it has time to dry out a little bit because it always goes easier in and out when it's wet that's yep [Music] the next step in the process here is actually to remove these cores and the reason why we're aerating and then removing the cores is we are creating these holes in here and then we are going to back fill and top dress with sand that is going to fill all the holes up with sand that is its airfication what it is is it's creating a place where the roots can spread out and fill in and thicken up and it's also helping with drainage it is helping decrease your chance for disease and other things like that just very good for the grass quick note if you are not real mowing you're not going through this verification process and bringing in sand to level and all this stuff kind of like i do over there i mow that tall above three inches with the rotary mower and you aerate that leave the course to break down on their own no need to take it out because you've worked so hard for this soil you put goodies and fertilizer in it just leave it to break down naturally do not take the cores out so once we have these all raked up and piled up i know a lot of people just like to dump them and get them out of here but talking to my buddy at the golf course he tells me reincorporate that into my top dressing so what i'm going to do i'm going to put the sand out and then i'm going to kind of break that up as much as i can and just spread it around or or we'll use it in the garden bed something like that but i do not want to just throw it away because it is good soil so now comes the fun part spreading the sand this is mason sand it's a very fine sand easy for your lawn to grow up through it you need to get your lawn as short as possible to give your lawn the best chance to grow up and through it i also added the whisperer pack to this with a little extra spike of nitrogen just to give us a little boost to grow up through this stuff right here now general rule of thumb is about a yard of this stuff per thousand square feet you basically would take it and spread it all over this and spread it out and smooth it out with a leveling rake or a leveling drag until it is completely flat and smooth and the sand has worked itself into the low area that is what i did over here and as you can see compared to what it looked like day one it is much much better but with the help of my sprinklers and the brush just coming out and brushing this stuff in and just working it in there where it is heavy right here is definitely the low spot here and that will continue to settle in the grass grow up right through that i am going to call an audible though on this section right here and if i had uh known this before i did that right there i would do the same thing but i'm gonna do this section just a little bit differently we have potentially the opportunity to list our house i don't want to have listing pictures with my yard buried and sand other than maybe the possibility of adding to the listing that we've got beachfront property and that increase the resale value other than that i do not want this yard buried in sand if we're going to list it and people are going to come by so really i just want to do the trench lines that i showed you guys this low spot up here this deep low spot up here and then i am just going to use the lansi to top dress the rest lightly now if you're not familiar with this thing this is a lansi compost peat moss spreader fantastic for compost fantastic for peat moss fantastic for soil one thing i have recently discovered is actually does a really good job with sand so i'm going to put a thin layer over this entire lawn and then we'll go back and fill in the deeper areas so it actually does a really nice job i actually wish i had the bigger one here with me but it's at my brother's house he's borrowing it but that puts down just about the perfect amount i wish i had the bigger one so i could do more at a time it would be perfect but that is just the right amount of sand that i want to put on here [Music] had to take a quick break so mommy could run to the store so we're chilling we've got a light layer of sand honestly the lansi put about a perfect amount um exactly what i wanted across this and so i've got that on here and then i've got heavier sand in the low spots and in these trench lines all i'm gonna do take my leveling rake if you are gonna do this every year or do this often this is another one of those tools that i highly recommend investing in it will pay for itself if not go ahead get a push broom something like this and just lightly drag this stuff in just to spread it more evenly maybe work it into the top layer or the top canopy of the grass and then level out these trench lines in low spots this thing does a fantastic job of that so that's what we're gonna do [Music] so as you can see as i'm running this level across here one it is pushing them into the low spots or this is pushing the sand into the low spots but it's also disappearing and it's exposing the top of these grass blades which is going to help this grass be able to grow through the sand even better than just leaving it on top so we've got most of that worked in there as you can see there's a lot of it disappeared and it's down in the canopy there are some spots that are thicker and heavier those are the lower spots especially over here the trench line and then this little this is this is a pretty deep spot right here so i put it on there to i didn't want to bury it so once that grows through i've got more sand on my trailer i'm just going to put a little bit at a time and keep slowly bringing that level up but overall pretty happy with how it's turning out so the next step here since we went ahead we dethatched it that was in this video you watch right here then we aerated got the sand sand is actually believe it or not is actually a pretty good growing medium for grass seeds so we're going to go ahead and we're going to do a light overseed so if you are not going to over seed leave it like it is water water water get that grass to grow up through that sand now i am going to go ahead and i'm going to over seed this i am using the same 365 ss kentucky bluegrass mix i got from mountain view seeds that's what i planted that section up there and honestly it is my favorite bluegrass mix i think it grows fantastic it is a great texture it feels great it looks great and it's really good traffic tolerance because i mean that's what they use on fenway park baseball field at the red sox stadium so i mean it has to be good obviously is what i'm going with to oversee this right here um and then i'm gonna also overseed with mountain v seed slugger 3gl perennial rye grass just to get a little rye grass in there so yeah that's it one pound per thousand let's get after it so that is the process right there the only thing left to do is water and wait and watch it fill in and hope for the best optional step save these plugs right here that we took away do not throw them away let them dry out a little bit and then crumble them up spread them light dusting over top of this as an extra top dressing just because we work so hard fertilizing our soil and building up our soil and putting nutrients in there that we can we can reuse these and put them back on there but just a light layer that's all i've got we'll see you guys [Music] you
