hey stream how's my audio sounding is it any good mic placement is one of the biggest mistakes people make on stream but that's absolutely not the only thing we're going over because we're going over six things to upgrade your stream's audio quality first of all we are going over mic placement because it depends on the type of microphone you have second of all we're gonna make sure that we remove things like your keyboard somewhere you're not talking so people don't hear you clicking while you're just playing your game we're also gonna reduce the volume difference between your lowest song which will be quiet talking and on your highest song which will be shouting to make sure that it's almost the same audio level this by the way is one of the most important things for your stream audio after that we're gonna remove every environment sound so if your pc is making a lot of sound and it makes a humming sound on your stream or if your microphone has some signal sound and it's a constant tone we can easily remove that and we're gonna do it with a filter then something really cool we're gonna make sure that your music volume goes down where you're talking and it goes up again when you stop talking and now look at the music i'm talking right now so it's pretty quiet and when i stop as you see then it went higher again and then the last thing is what most people will be looking for and it's making your microphone sound more full and more warm handling your audio on the stream is really important and all the things we're going over in this video are all building up to having a well-managed microphone sound on stream but first a big thanks to the sponsor of this video which is own.tv they are a big web show for stream graphics and i keep working with them because they just deliver really high quality the link to their website is in my description and once on their website you should go to overlays and then complete packages here you have a ton of animated stream designs and after clicking on one of them you can scroll down a bit and then you can find their preview tool this lets you test all elements inside of their pecs like alerts but also the stinger transition or the intermission screen you can test everything the link to their website is in my description and when you use code tv and you will get fifty percent of your price so if you are interested in stream designs definitely check out their website code tv and fifty percent of check them out all right if you have any questions about anything i'm talking about in this video or you just have general streaming questions i stream on twitch every monday wednesday and friday so you can come in the stream ask me a question talk about streaming doesn't matter the link to my twitch is in my description and i would really appreciate a follow there a very important part of your stream audio is optimizing your mic placement for the type of microphone you have for example this is a dynamic microphone which means that i need to be really close to it for it to actually sound good if i place my microphone much further away i will have to boost my volume or my mixer will boost the volume for me but it will sound very bad and this is because my microphone just isn't made for that on the other hand you also have condenser microphones and they are meant to be placed a bit further away from your mouth let me give you an example this is the elgato wave microphone and this is a condenser mic so that means let me sit like this so you can see the distance so a dynamic microphone should be really close to you about two to three inches maximum a condenser mic on the other hand could be further away from you because they are just made for that they are more sensitive than this might and this is a very commonly made mistake so pay attention to which mic you have do some research look it up so you place it at the right distance from you now there are a few other things about mic placement that are important you should also look up your polar pattern now what is this it's extremely important so let me show you right here you see a bunch of different polar patterns and basically this tells you where your microphone is recording this for example is a super cardioid and this will record in the front of the mic and then a bit from the back but not really around the microphone like this and you can look up the polar pattern of your microphone now why is this so important well this microphone for example will not record anything that's behind the mic so because of that i can place it really close to my keyboard because it doesn't record from the back of the mic if you're watching my videos then chances are that you know who harris heller is and he places his microphone like this something like this almost out of the frame now doing that with this microphone will be completely against this purpose right because right now it's aimed at my keyboard so my keyboard sound will be as loud as my voice compared to when i would place it like this then it will not record my keyboard but it will record my voice so do research for your own mic so you know where it is recording sound from so you can position it correctly and then also check if it's a dynamic or a condenser mic if it's a dynamic mic place it really close to you if it's a condenser mic you can place it a bit further away now one last step if you have a dynamic mic that needs to be close to you make sure you do not position it like this because that's what i did in my earlier videos i will show you an example on the screen right now now this is not a good idea place it next to you it's still very close to me but because my camera is on the side of my screen there is still a gap between my face and my microphone if you're looking for recommendations for upgrading your microphone in my opinion either you have a really really really cheap microphone or your headset microphone or you buy a mic that's a bit more expensive like this one which gives you control over your voice your music your game sound all that stuff or you take the leap and you buy an xlr setup i will link everything in the description you can check it out i've had this mic for a while but i recently bought a go xlr mini and i have to say i don't have to change anything about this recording right here after recording this video i can just use this sound as it is the go xlr makes it sound amazing it levels everything out it's pretty good and of course it gives a lot of stream control but yeah that's the purpose of the go xlr so after you're using your microphone correctly it's time to jump into streamlabs obs and apply some effects to it that will make it very professional first of all if you didn't add your microphone yet let's go to the settings to audio mic auxiliary device one and now let's select our microphone i'm gonna use my headset microphone turn it on first there we go i heard the sound so let's apply effects to it step number one is making sure you can hear your microphone so you can know if you're applying the right effects so click on this settings icon right here in the mixer and then next to your microphone changing monitor off to monitor and output or monitor only doesn't matter if you're not streaming and right now i can hear my microphone okay let's close this now click on the settings icon next to your microphone and then go to filters right here we can click on the plus icon and these are all the filters that we can add and i'm going to tell you which ones you should add in which order and how you need to set them up first thing is the gain filter and you can use this if your microphone is way too quiet if you're talking really loud and let me reduce this and your microphone volume level looks like this it doesn't go further then it's way too quiet and you need to add some gain or boost to recording level okay let me move it back like this so if your microphone is way too quiet before adding gain in streamlabs obs right click on your windows sound settings and then go to sounds then go to the recording tab look for your microphone so for me it's headset microphone double click that go to levels and make sure that it's at 100 right here click on ok click on ok by the way if your microphone is way too loud if it's always in the rut even if you talk really quiet you want to reduce the level a bit so make sure the level is right then after doing that if it's still way too quiet let's go back to the filters you can add a gain filter right here click on done and you can just boost the gain a bit and as you see right now it's peaking all the time because i don't need the gain filter but this is an option the next two filters we're gonna add are extremely interesting and is the compressor and the expander and let me explain you what they do basically they make sure that your voice is always at the same level or around the same volume this is extremely important on stream because sometimes you'll be talking very quiet to the chat and sometimes you'll be excited so you will be screaming and you want to make sure that your volume on your stream doesn't peak if you're doing that and the compressor and the expander filter are an amazing combination for this so let's start with the compressor click on done and then the first thing you want to do is changing the ratio to four now change the attack to two milliseconds and then the release to 100 okay right now you will have to go through a process to set this up so follow me for that set your threshold to zero like this and then move this window a bit to the side if it's covering your mixer because you want to see the volume of your microphone so right now you should talk really quiet into your microphone the quietest you would ever go on stream and then you want to boost this output gain till your quiet sounds are still going to the start or to the middle of the yellow line right here so let me show you i will do it right now let's set this to zero again okay and let's do it this is really quiet and this is the quietest i would ever talk on stream it's still in the green right now so i will increase the output volume till my quiet sounds go well into the yellow like this it's even a bit much so i will take eight like this okay so once you've done that what this will do is whenever you talk pretty quiet your volume will be boosted but right now when you talk really loud you see that it's going into the red especially if i shout like this okay so as you saw right now my loud sounds are peaking so because of that you want to pull back this threshold so now you want to talk really loud scream into your microphone and make sure that your loudest noise goes to the middle of the red not above the middle of the red so i will do that right now hey hey hey hey hey hey hey hey hey okay so right now that's working i'm even gonna pull it back a bit more so let's see what this filter is doing right now let's disable the compressor i'm gonna talk really quiet hello hello hello hello i'm not even touching the yellow now i'm gonna shout hey and i'm peeking so right now i'm gonna enable the compressor i'm gonna talk really quiet right now hey hey hey hey i'm good into the yellow i'm gonna shout right now hey and as you see it's even going a bit too far so i'm gonna pull back the threshold even more let's shout again hey okay this is perfect so right now my microphone volume will always be the same level on the stream now because we've done this we have a problem and let me tell you what so right now all quiet sounds will be boosted on the stream but this also means that for example when i'm not talking but i'm making noise with my keyboard that sound will also be boosted let me show you i'm going to type on my keyboard look at the volume level as you see that got boosted too so what we want to do now is we want to add some kind of noise gate and we have a fancy noise gate which is the expander let's click on that let's click on done and right now as you see presets you can choose gate noise gate or expander we're gonna use expander we're gonna set the ratio to four again the attack to 2 milliseconds and the release to 100 and right now we kind of have to do the same thing as before but in first so you have to imagine you're streaming you are not talking what else in your room will make the loudest noise after your voice for me that would be my keyboard it's a mechanical keyboard and it makes a lot of noise when you type on it so what i'm gonna do is i'm gonna say nothing i'm gonna make pretty loud noise with my keyboard and then i'm gonna move this threshold completely to the left and then i'm gonna watch the volume levels of my microphone right here while typing on my keyboard and i'm gonna move this threshold to the right till i don't see the green line moving anymore so till my keyboard doesn't trigger my microphone anymore so let's do that right now i'm gonna say nothing type my keyboard and do the threshold okay so right now i'm gonna show you i'm gonna type my keyboard you will hear it because i'm recording with this microphone for the video but this microphone is what i'm applying all my filters to so you will not see it moving in the mixer there we go this is actually perfect and as you see as soon as i start talking it is picking up my microphone so this is what i mean with professional microphone quality on stream things like your keyboard people shouldn't hear that when you're not talking they also should be able to set a certain volume for your stream and the stream should always be the same volume when you're screaming you shouldn't be waking them up and be like oh this streamer just screamed into my ears no you should always be the same volume and we have done that right now and let's actually add that broadcast microphone effect right now so let's click on the filter type and then click on vst plugin now click on done and right here by clicking this drop down you can search a plugin that you've installed now for you this will probably be empty so we're going to install this plugin marvel gq now click on this first thing right here you will see download vst for windows quickly go through the installation process i'm going to click on cancel then restart streamlabs obs and then you can select marvel gq right here then click on open plugin interface that would open behind streamlabs obs but i'm gonna click it right here in my taskbar and then here we can click on presets then we can click on brighter and basic and we can click on activate and once you see this arrow in front of it it means that you've actually activated it so you can close this and here we go this is the profile and now you can change some things to this but it will make your microphone sound more warm and bassy by default if you want this effect to be even stronger your bassy sounds are on the left your midtones in the middle and your higher frequency sounds are right here on the right so if you want your voice to sound more bassy you will have to change these sliders right here do them a bit higher like this if you think that your voice is really high and this effect makes it even stronger and annoying you can reduce these ones a bit and that will reduce the high notes so after this we can go back to the filters and then click on close plugin interface and right now it will be gone from our taskbar but it is still active now let's click on the plus icon because there are two effects left you have the limiter right here and in theory you don't need it right now because we've added the compressor to limit high sounds but i just want to explain what the limiter does this will limit any sounds above a certain threshold so let me show you right here i first need to plug in my headset because the battery died let me quickly insert the cord right here okay it's working so let me show you what the limiter does i'm gonna move this completely to the left and as you see right now my voice doesn't go above this level even if i scream watch this see it doesn't go past this so the limiter allows you to set a certain limit something like this for example now it will not go above this level any sounds that go above it will just be cut off you will still hear the sound but it will not be louder than this so you can use this you can also apply it on other things for example in your desktop sound if you don't want to blow out your viewers ears when a certain video is making a lot of noise for example and this is actually a good tip so let's go back let's click on the settings of the desktop sound go to filters click on plus icon go to the limiter click on done and now you can set a certain limit for example something like this right here then it will not go above this level so even if someone is baiting you by sending you a link to a video that has extremely loud sound it will never go above this limit right here so it's actually good practice to apply this to all your sound sources okay let's click on nonetheless one more effect i need to show you because after adding these effects chances are if your microphone isn't that high quality that you will have a kind of noise or a kind of beeping sound or maybe your fans of your pc are making noise you can remove that with a filter so let's go to filters let's click on the plus icon let's choose noise suppression click on done move it before the limiter your limiter should always be the latest because this works in an order so actually we should move the vst plugin before the compressor and the expander now the noise suppression this is really simple you should just move this completely to the right listen to your sound when you're talking and then reduce this level till that noise is completely gone now be careful with this if you have a really loud noise in your room and you keep reducing it with this still is completely gone then chances are your voice will also start to sound pretty weird so be careful with this if you have a strong cpu you can choose this right here this is a better quality noise reduction it also has no extra settings it just works but it's harder for your cpu to run so if you have cpu power left you can use this but if your pc is already having problems with gaming and streaming and stuff then chances are that this will be too hard for your pc to run okay let's click on done and there's one more thing that i promised in the intro of this video and that's making sure that your music volume lowers when you are talking and it becomes higher again when you stop talking i'm gonna do this pretty quickly because this video is gonna be way too long but if you wanna do that you should follow my steps first of all you should install virtual cable so just search for it in google and then go to decide vbrgio.com this is virtual cable click on windows let the download finish go to your downloads press ctrl shift n to make a new folder call it cable doesn't matter we want to drag this vb cable to that folder and then extract it right here in the folder because there are a lot of files in it go to 7-zip and then extract here or winrar doesn't matter which program you use extract here it will extract all the files and then you want to look for vb cable setup or vb cable setup x64 if your pc is 64 bits it'll probably be this one install this right here if you don't find it afterwards and you should restart your pc but let's continue right now right click your windows sound settings and go to open sound settings and scroll to the bottom and click on device preferences right here right now you should open the program that plays your music for me that's spotify so let's open spotify right now and then let's start the song because every program that's making sound on your pc will appear right here in this list now right here i see spotify music now i want to click on the first drop down if they are next to each other it's also the first in the line you want to click on it and now you want to send your music to the virtual cable so here it is speakers vb audio virtual cable now this name was something different before i'm going to be honest i have no idea why this happened but search for audio virtual cable and that will work so right now spotify is going to this virtual cable now we want to go to streamlabs obs we want to go to the settings to audio and then before this change to the cable happened i needed to add it as a microphone but right now i can find it in my desktop audio devices so search for it either in these desktop sounds or in your microphone devices for me i can find it right here and then we want to look for it right here speakers vb audio virtual cable let's click on that click on done right here in the mixer let's make it a bit bigger and as you see speakers audio virtual cable this is our spotify let's pull spotify to the front okay let's reposition it a bit let's pause it and as you see now it doesn't move so let's click on play again let's minimize it now keep in mind that you can go to the settings and then to rename and then you can just call it music like this click on done and that's much easier right now so now click on the settings again and go to filters then add a new filter use a compressor right here click on done and right now we want to set the ratio to four change the attack to something like 50 and then the release to something like 100 and i'm gonna show you what this does exactly after we've set it up because it's pretty useful now right here on the bottom you see docking source now you want to click on that and then you can choose a device as a docking source so i'm going to use my headset microphone now what does this do this compressor filter will not be applied to the music source unless this ducking source is making sound now because we've added our microphone right here when we are talking into our microphone this device right here our microphone will make sound so these effects will go into play and now the next thing is really cool i love this let's move this threshold to -45 something like this okay let's move this to the left and now look at the music i'm talking right now so it's pretty quiet and when i stop talking as you see then it went higher again so right now in this headset microphone so this device right here is making sound then the music will be pulled down and when i stop talking the music will become louder again this is extremely cool and with this threshold you can control how strong this effect is if i make this minus 56 then when i'm talking it's really quiet and when i stop it's louder again so this is extremely cool now the attack and the release they decide how fast these effects are going to play for example if i change the release to something like 500 milliseconds then you will see that when i stop talking this music will become louder much slower than before so i'm gonna stop talking right now see it took way longer so you should find a sweet spot where when you're talking your voice is like this and your music is like this and then when you stop talking they kind of switch places something like 120 might be perfect let's stop talking and look at the music okay this was pretty good so let's click on done right now i know that this was a lot of information if you have any questions about this i stream every monday wednesday and friday just comment to my stream as you probably saw i love talking about this stuff so just comment to my stream ask a question about it you can find my twitch link in the description just give me a follow and you will get a notification
