Yes, CICO is generally true. When approaching a diet, one should take three other critical factors into account: satisfaction, nutrition, and sanity.
Calories from fat (and protein to some extent) will, in general, be more satisfying and keep you feeling fuller for longer.
However, all types of foods will have differing functions--for example, sugars (simple carbohydrates) in moderation are great for giving you quick bursts of energy. Whole grains (complex carbs) provide more satisfaction and provide more sustainable, slow releasing energy as it takes longer to digest and metabolize. Fats have significant benefits for brain function and have been linked to healthy testosterone levels. Protein provides the building blocks for muscle recovery and function, and is also great at satisfying. Dark leafy greens, while not very efficient in providing energy in calories, are incredible staples in that they provide the micronutrients (vitamins, etc.) necessary for a healthy body and mind. Fruits (once again, in moderation) are a great source of those simple carbs for quick energy while also packing tons of awesome micronutrients. All foods all have their appropriate and respective purpose, and finding balance in nutrition is key for maintaining an all around healthy, functioning body.
Finally, it is important to approach a diet with a goal of maintaining sanity. While one person may find him/herself craving a more fat-heavy diet, another may have a preference for flavorful fruits. While keeping satisfaction and nutrition in mind and in balance, there's nothing wrong with skewing your diet to some extent to favor what ever keeps you going with the diet in the long-run.
EDIT: TL;DR -- While CICO still reigns, it is more complex than that. Balance is key, and everyone is a little different.
I mean, he's right about this, and a lot of other things, but many of his videos are misleading and often outright wrong.

Holy shit the Youtube comments on this are really bad. Like.. bot bad...
I think Adam needed to differentiate between weightloss and health in this video. Less calories is the only way to lose weight, regardless of content. this video would have been much better served talking about nutrition and the health benefits of both sugar and fats.
As with most of the internet, its a half truth from both ends. The sugar companies took a truth, derived a conclusion thats not true, and then advocates for that conclusion. Adam does the same thing - take something thats true, derived a conclusion thats not true, then advocates for the conclusion.
High fat foods arent making you fat. High sugar foods arent making you fat. The obesity rates skyrocketed because portion size spiked and exercise levels dropped. If you eat more and use less energy, you gain weight.
I will give Adam one thing though - you need to eat fat to survive, but you dont need sugar (thanks, Jurassic Park!).

This guy always comes off as condescending and is often times wrong. No, low fat foods are not making you fatter. Calories are. Period.
