sorry but low-fat foods don't help you lose weight and the only reason you think they do is because of bad science and worst marketing that's ridiculous when I eat that it goes in my body and becomes fat and fat is bad yeah that's what everybody thinks but it's not true oh hey leg timer people have been eating fat for as long as humans have existed and their lives were swell fat thanks good also south for tiger wound okay maybe not swelled the point is that is one of our oldest and most basic nutrients well thank you for the history lesson Adam but I need to lose weight and the most important thing is for me to cut out fat yep that's what the sugar industry wants you to think holy hamboning you trying to give me a heart attack funny you should say that because in the early 20th century doctors began to notice a disturbing rise in a once rare condition called heart disease Americans hearts are failing but when will the love to go and when President Eisenhower suffered a heart attack in 1955 it galvanized the nation sighing listen to this Americans were determined to fight heart disease but instead they were bamboozled by the sugar industry and one very suave scientist this is Ancel keys a scientist so popular he was made the cover of Time magazine he was certain that that was the cause of heart disease but only because in Cherry victims a tough to get the result he wanted this bet is out of sight this data can't sit on it that makes you fat a and nobody cared that his research was bad not really except for one slightly less popular scientist named John Yadkin actually sugar is the likely culprit when you eat more sugar than your liver can normally process it stored as fat 2 News announced Union and made fun of his research in public that makes you fat and the story people just believe this jerk yeah because of a big assist from a group with a sickly sweet agenda the sugar industry in the sixties these candy coated capitalists started straight-up paying scientists to downplay the dangers of sugar and shift the blame too fast here's a little something for that big fat problem we have you got it sugar I mean you the sugar industry I wasn't calling you sugar when John Huggins faux Gallagher sugar in 1972 the industry publicly mocked him calling his research science fiction now we've been eating fat full millennia but if we track the rise in sugar consumption there's a clear correlation with the rides and hostes ease and obesity if we track the rises sugar consumption live long and prosper beep beep I am a sugar robot I am NOT a sugar robot I'm not the sad truth is you can was right we now know that sugar is linked to both heart disease and weight gain and it's been found to be more addictive than cocaine [Music] but keys in the sugar industry spent so many years swing the research that by the time you can retire the public was convinced despite being right the whole time he died in obscurity Wow science is a harsh business and big sweets relentless lobbying didn't stop there they spent years packing health panels with sugar friendly scientists we need reliable objective research I've got just the man that's back their campaign reached its sugar height when the USDA officially recommended a low-fat diet in 1980 fat is the enemy once everyone switched to low-fat foods everyone started getting thinner right quite the opposite after the USDA came out against that obesity rates actually skyrocketed why low-fat foods must tell me lose weight I mean I'm cutting out something right wrong when you take the fat out it makes food taste worse so to make it more palatable food companies typically add a little something piles and piles of sugar oh this fat-free cake taste like styrofoam y'all sugar [Music] much better now let's talk about why I think what sure is superior brand okay that's enough Oh yikes but you said that sugar makes you gain weight exactly the sugar industry peddled bad science and demonized fat in order to sell us more of the product that actually causes heart disease and weight gain and now eating so much sugar has made us fatter and unhealthier at to snacky sorry Sam it's true hey Adam here if you like that be sure to watch all new episodes of Adam ruins everything every Tuesday at 10:00 on truTV

Yes, CICO is generally true. When approaching a diet, one should take three other critical factors into account: satisfaction, nutrition, and sanity.

Calories from fat (and protein to some extent) will, in general, be more satisfying and keep you feeling fuller for longer.

However, all types of foods will have differing functions--for example, sugars (simple carbohydrates) in moderation are great for giving you quick bursts of energy. Whole grains (complex carbs) provide more satisfaction and provide more sustainable, slow releasing energy as it takes longer to digest and metabolize. Fats have significant benefits for brain function and have been linked to healthy testosterone levels. Protein provides the building blocks for muscle recovery and function, and is also great at satisfying. Dark leafy greens, while not very efficient in providing energy in calories, are incredible staples in that they provide the micronutrients (vitamins, etc.) necessary for a healthy body and mind. Fruits (once again, in moderation) are a great source of those simple carbs for quick energy while also packing tons of awesome micronutrients. All foods all have their appropriate and respective purpose, and finding balance in nutrition is key for maintaining an all around healthy, functioning body.

Finally, it is important to approach a diet with a goal of maintaining sanity. While one person may find him/herself craving a more fat-heavy diet, another may have a preference for flavorful fruits. While keeping satisfaction and nutrition in mind and in balance, there's nothing wrong with skewing your diet to some extent to favor what ever keeps you going with the diet in the long-run.

EDIT: TL;DR -- While CICO still reigns, it is more complex than that. Balance is key, and everyone is a little different.

I mean, he's right about this, and a lot of other things, but many of his videos are misleading and often outright wrong.

Low-fat foods are making you fatter

Eating more calories than your body burns is making you fatter.

Holy shit the Youtube comments on this are really bad. Like.. bot bad...

I think Adam needed to differentiate between weightloss and health in this video. Less calories is the only way to lose weight, regardless of content. this video would have been much better served talking about nutrition and the health benefits of both sugar and fats.

As with most of the internet, its a half truth from both ends. The sugar companies took a truth, derived a conclusion thats not true, and then advocates for that conclusion. Adam does the same thing - take something thats true, derived a conclusion thats not true, then advocates for the conclusion.

High fat foods arent making you fat. High sugar foods arent making you fat. The obesity rates skyrocketed because portion size spiked and exercise levels dropped. If you eat more and use less energy, you gain weight.

I will give Adam one thing though - you need to eat fat to survive, but you dont need sugar (thanks, Jurassic Park!).

This guy always comes off as condescending and is often times wrong. No, low fat foods are not making you fatter. Calories are. Period.
