thank you I've been driving Lincoln's since long before driving Lincoln was cool I don't do it to make a statement and do it because I love my Lincoln [Music] sometimes I wonder it's what is underneath that 20 foot long Lincoln hood and will it Blow these tires away hey welcome back big old boat behind me here this is a 1977 Lincoln Continental Mark V apparently it's a one owner car it's got the 460 engine in it this is a pretty sweet car super unique now this thing's supposedly been sitting for 27 years uh the last time they ran it was in 96 I'm not really sure what I want to do with this car yet I think we'll see if we can get it running and driving first and then I'll decide if I want to do the uh rust repair which I'll show you here in a second so let's go ahead and take a closer look at this thing Okay so as you can see all the tires are but they don't hold air at all so we're going to get a set of tires on here I'm gonna go ahead and show you guys the roof a minute right in front of the uh final top it's absolutely gone I mean it's all caved in right here you got the sunroof that's in really nice shape but you can even see right along here this thing is just eating up it's really too bad it's pretty pretty neat car um surprisingly everything's solid down below that's what the real bummer is because if they would have maybe took that vinyl top off probably would have been a good car good solid car I mean there's a little bit of paint chipping right there but other than that this thing is solid so a few of these needle lights are broken on the front and I know those are super expensive I've looked them up this one's gone these Corner markers are all in nice shape again not much rust not even not here either this door is a little stand it up you can see the windshield's gone or actually it's still there but looks like somebody blew through or something you get the paint peeling here but even there still decently solid then you go up here again on this side driver's side look at that nasty the last quarter here again you got some paint peeling you got a little bit of bubbling right here but uh yeah pretty solid car other than the roof let's go ahead and grab the keys a minute and Pop the Trunk and make sure I don't cut myself here foreign all right we've got some goodies here I'm gonna tote with some glass in it that can go in the garbage power steering line hopefully that doesn't mean anything bad trim ring for one of those little side windows it's too rusty to even put it back on jumper cables spare tire with a shirt a couple hubcaps center caps those are pretty neat a little bit of trim and an old first aid kit here a lot of cooling well yeah it looks like that's about all there is worth the looking at because everything else is garbage so I'm gonna go ahead and neatly place this all back in here and uh let's go peek at the interior what's up okay let's take a look at these seats and the rest of this interior here you got a 50-foot long door that sucker goes forever you can you can also see up here I mean there must have been a lot of moisture sitting on the top of this thing the headliner is all just shredded but these seats are awesome lazy boys and definitely want to try those out super neat Dash look at those gauges that is so cool we got some extra trim pieces in here that must be from the door judging by the length of it I don't know if I can get over to the glove box here without getting cut something hanging on it here maybe their last bag from their last dentist visit Maybe it looks like maybe a few tools or something laying in there nothing special another center cap sitting in the passenger seat here all right well let's go ahead and slide back out and go take a look under the hood okay so it looks like uh everything is intact now the one thing that the guy got this from did tell me is that he threw a battery on it and he didn't get any power anywhere so maybe uh what we'll do is we'll start with the same thing and see if we could figure out why he wasn't getting power after he hooked the battery up and uh once we figure out how to get power to this thing then uh we'll figure out if we can break it free um let's go ahead and pull the spark plugs out and put a little Marvel Mystery Oil in the cylinders we'll let it sit for a bit and then we'll try to see if it turns over so there's a few things I want to take a peek at before I really dig into this thing that's uh oil which is as low and we'll re-dip it here doesn't smell too bad and it's at a decent level so we should be safe there um the coolant is a couple inches low there is some in there so hopefully hopefully it'll just top off and and hold I want to peek under under here and see what we're looking at so that don't look too bad let's uh fairly clean and that's good because uh on the outside here there is a lot of a lot of debris I mean you can see I pulled the plug wires off on this side and I can't even barely get to the plugs they're just buried in leaves and whatever else so I'm gonna try to shop back all that out and then we'll add some Marvel Mystery Oil so the spark plugs are out and I just want to show you guys here this is the driver's side really doesn't look that bad at all and then the uh passenger side right over here even cleaner it almost looks like maybe they were replaced not too long ago or not too long before they parked it I don't know but uh anyways probably I got a new set so we'll just replace them regardless but I'm gonna throw some Mr Marvel Mystery Oil down here now and and we'll let it sit for a bit so I've had the Marvel Mister oil sitting in cylinders overnight and I want to see if this thing uh crank turns over um it's pretty tight in here so I think before I try to fit my my hands down there I might just go ahead and throw a battery in and see if the key turns it over a sec and uh we'll go from there okay the battery is in the cables are on let's go see what the key does all right let's see if we get power here oh we're getting some lights some fastened belt seat belt low fuel but uh yeah there's no there's no turning over so back to the drawing board let's go ahead and do a quick starter solenoid test ooh baby oh yeah so I think my solenoid's bad starter works engines turning over that's great so I went ahead and replaced the starter solenoid there uh put a new battery connector on the negative side here let's go give the key a whirl again all right here we go we're gonna give the key another another shot see if the the solenoid does the trick and it does she's turning over that's awesome okay now we can move on to the next item all right so it's the next day um you know since we got the sink turning over with the starter now I went and I went and got a set of used tires put on the wheels here we're gonna go ahead and throw those on before we uh go any farther on the motor after I get these on we'll uh start pulling a few things off in the engine bay there and uh get back to it see if we can get this thing running looking Sharp I only got three studs on this side on the rear and the front wheel so if I was to go any farther into this car I'd probably go ahead and punch new studs into there but for now we're gonna go ahead and hold them on with three front and back you can see uh oh no I got four here just lost the one so we'll go ahead and throw these this side on and and uh get this puppy set back on the ground so the first couple things I'm going to do here I'm going to take the air cleaner off um I'm also going to unhook the fuel line from the carb and I'm going to unhook the fuel line from down on the fuel pump that way I can uh hook it to a separate little tank and uh one not suck up any old fuel from the from the original tank and two see if our pump's still working pumping up to the carb here so we'll start with that and after that we'll start peeking into the distributor see if we got Spark okay okay here we go all right all right so we'll just pull this uh fuel line off the carb here it's just that and it's a old fuel line so it might be a little bit of a pain but nothing we can't handle work it Loose a little bit there we go oh that is some brown fuel all right so we got the top one off here let's slide down underneath and get that one off all right so you can see we got our two fuel lines here this is the one we need to take off that goes back to the tank um I'm not sure if I can do this while I'm holding the camera but we'll give it the oil College try oh boy oh yeah look at that boom so there we go we got that off now I can throw a new line on there and uh and hook it to clean fuel that way we're not sucking up any of this uh old varnish all right so as you can see got a new hose on there with the clamp and I got it plumbed up through the engine bay to head up to the top here and I'll show you in a second then it goes right over the edge of the Fender here so we should have plenty of room to hook it up to a tank now with the fuel system uh kind of out of our way let's go ahead and before we dive into the distributor we'll just plug a spark plug into one of the wires here and we'll see if it Sparks for us okay well I know one thing we're not getting spark and uh my solenoid is sticking over there so I gotta go whack it every time I turn the key on but uh that's all right uh let's uh let's dive into this distributor here also by the looks of all the random excess fuel that was left in the line that's spewed all over the passenger side now it looks like the fuel pump's working so that's awesome we should be able to just hook the boat tank up to that in a little bit here and if we get the spark thing figured out and we'll be able to fire this puppy up but uh let's see let's take a peek under here a minute a little corrosion but nothing major before I jump into that let's see if we're getting spark from her coil okay no spark from our coil so I think we can go ahead and assume that coils possibly more than likely the problem so let's see if we can just throw another one on and see what we get all right so we got a new coil here so let's pull this old one off and uh throw the new one on here and uh we'll see if this is our issue all right so we got the old coil out let's go ahead and pull up this new one in there right here it's got the same connections for the funky little deal here and before we go ahead and tighten everything down let's just uh plugger in and see what we get well that's a bummer I didn't see a spark out of that thing either interesting all right so we're getting no spark new coil and all let's go ahead and tear into this thing we'll just kind of pop things off and and uh see if we can't find anything out here so we got the rotor to pull the mid section right out okay so I'm pretty much ready to pull this pickup coil and everything out of the distributor here first thing you pull out is this uh reluctor gear I believe it's called there's a little clip I already took off that holds uh This Bar onto a pin on the pickup coil here there's a screw down in here for a ground strap and then basically you know go ahead and pull that right out like that now on this new pickup coil that I got I had to put this Center piece in from the old one but basically then it'll just go right back in the exact the exact opposite of uh how it came out we'll go ahead and get that in there I'll put that little clip on now you want to be really careful because this thing is super tiny as you can see there uh and if you lose that you're probably not getting it back okay so that was a bit of a struggle but it's on there and uh we're looking good there we'll go ahead and throw this uh harness in and then there's a ground strap on this harness where the little screw goes through okay now the uh the last piece to the puzzle is this reluctor gear and it has a small little dowel pin right there and that needs to go in the little groove on the one side of this reluctor wheel so you want to be super careful that you don't lose that there we have it I got that little pin in it looks like everything is a-okay so pretty much all I got to do now is plug that in and put everything back on the top here so that would be this a little spacer piece there we go and last but not least our uh a rotor and it shoves right down on top of there and we're pretty much ready to throw this back on the cap and check if we check again see if we got spark now okay so we'll plug the electrical back in here and let's uh let's get set up on the spark plug again okay I don't know if we can see that real well but let's see if we're getting spark thank you and still no spark well that's crazy Okay so I think the only thing I have left that it could possibly be is this box and it turns out I did grab a new one of those just in case so let's go ahead and see if we throw this thing in what we get let's see here we've got both bolts out and it looks like maybe it could have got hot back there let's go ahead and Swap this thing out a minute for the new one wow okay so we'll get these connectors off oh that just busted I guess that's the the side of the computer anyways or the module with no biggie okay pull that one out and we'll go ahead and throw this one in okay tighten her down we'll give her another shot hopefully this is the ticket all right now let's uh let's do the spark test again okay we got Spark so that was it okay so now that we know we got spark in this thing I think I'm gonna go ahead and throw the spark plugs in it put the wires back up um and we'll dump some fuel down the carb before we hook any fuel systems up uh just to see if it fires for us and uh and then uh what we'll do is we'll hook up the boat tank and see if this uh pump is pumping fuel the curb okay there we have it all the spark plugs are in let's go ahead and hook these plug wires back up in the same order they came off let's see it's on the other side thank you all right there we have it plug wires are all on let me get a little fuel let's see if this thing fires up okay here we go I think it's gonna fire foreign a lot of junk in here but let's see [Laughter] I might have to fix that before I go too crazy far man solenoid keeps sticking one thing I do notice though we got a lot of get a lot of smoke out the back there one thing I do notice is these uh headlight flaps actually started to go down so that's kind of cool so I guess once the vacuum kicks in those things will probably uh start to work I suppose um I'm a little worried about the solenoid sticking but uh I guess I could hook up the the boat tank and see if it pumps fuel all right let's see here let me get it yeah the hose clamp there all right let's see if this thing starts pumping foreign pumping fuel so let's go ahead and shove that back on there and get that little flipper back up okay I'll give her another shot all right something foreign [Music] thank you so this single this thing seems to keep running if I stay on the if I keep the key all the way forward but then it keeps the starter going so um one cool thing though is uh these things closed up so that's pretty neat look at that all right so I think uh the deal I got going on here is there's something wrong with my ignition switch it's probably super corroded in there um pretty hard to get to and all that so uh I'm gonna try to just wiggle it around a bit mess with it and see if we can't get this thing in a sweet spot uh without the starter sticking on and uh see what happens all right there she is the starter's not on right now right on look at that we got a runner [Music] a lot of smoke out the back probably burning out all the Mystery Oil man look at that she's running yeah buddy she's gonna be burning some stuff off here for sure this is awesome okay um I'm gonna let it heat up a second and that way I uh I can drain the oil it'll drain out nicely once it's got a little heat in it and then we'll change on the oil and hopefully we can see if this thing has any gears starting to sound better and better it's got a few weird noises but I think that'll go away I should probably shop back this thing off quick too because I don't want nothing to catch on fire there's a lot of junk up here well I suppose it's time to drain the oil out of this thing that way we can put some fresh stuff in there all right now it's oil filter time so let's go ahead and get this old one off of here okay thank you okay new oil filter installed so now we'll go ahead and drop this thing down it looks like one of my new tires is flat already perfect all right well let's go ahead and top this puppy off put some fresh oil oh let's see here right in the safe Zone perfect I'm gonna probably call her quits for tonight uh it's getting a little darker out got a few things I got to do in it today um we'll get back on it tomorrow [Music] um hopefully we'll be able to uh get it fired up good again I guess we'll uh see you tomorrow every time I go to start it the solenoid seems to stick and the starter stays running even when it fires up I can turn the key off and it only stop the starter only turns off when I whack the solenoid I do have a new solenoid here I'm going to swap it out and see if that makes a diff uh otherwise I'm pretty sure it's probably the starter foreign okay so we got the new solenoid on let's give it another shot starter seems to be kicking backwards after I release the key hmm okay so obviously I don't think the solenoid was a problem uh I'm gonna go ahead and probably get a new starter in and we're going to swap that out and hopefully that fixes this issue because I believe the starter's kicking back and it's uh going against the way the motor's supposed to be going the rotation and uh let's do some funky stuff so um I'm gonna get a new starter and we'll check back in so they got the starter out of this Lincoln here and uh the first thing I notice is there's a tooth that's almost completely gone right there and uh also well I was taking it out this is the top bolt and that was still in and as I took this bottom bolt out the whole thing started just falling out well I'm pretty sure this bolt is supposed to come in from this side and threads into the housing here so this thing was in this way it wasn't even holding anything so this whole starter was just basically hanging in off of this bottom bolt here uh so I'm gonna go ahead and just get the new starter anyways that since it's out now and uh we'll see if that fixes the issue we're having so here's the new starter uh first thing I'm noticing is the gear is way farther back than the original uh so I'm guessing the original was not retracting back into the uh housing there um and yeah I'm gonna go ahead and throw this thing in here you can see like I said that top hole is threaded meaning that bolt needed to go in from the other side of what it was so I'm gonna go ahead and and mount that the right way up there and we'll see if that fixes our issue okay here we go all right oh starters in and uh I'm gonna lower this thing down and let's give the key a little crank okay let's hope this uh goes well let's see let's give a shot all right well I think that fixes the uh continuous uh cranking from the starter staying on I still have issues with uh the car wanting to stay running it seems like it only stays running with the T all the way forward but uh at least we got the starter deal fix so now we can focus on getting this thing running all right so I've been messing with the uh the key switch here a bit and uh basically what I got is if I turn it all the way forward turn this car over and you let off and it just uh dies on you if I if I can get this thing to stay forward far enough it stays running the starter does turn off uh it's almost like it's just a very tiny little section where it'll stay running so I believe like if I'm driving this thing and hit a bump it'll probably turn off but let's see if I can get it going here for you okay there you go it's very like very I guess that went back quite a ways but let's see here [Music] they leave it right there she's running [Music] idling so I'm gonna go ahead and no it also diesels pretty bad when you turn it off really bad yep that's good anywhoes uh I think what I'm gonna do is I'm going to go ahead and top off a cool in a minute and then that way we can uh hopefully take it for a spin well uh oh we got we got some pressure in there all right well let's go ahead and top this off and see what we got okay we'll go get some water all right I'm gonna see if I can kick it on a minute and that way I can get this circulating [Music] [Music] [Music] thank you thank you foreign that's not good we're missing the end of our distance thank you [Applause] foreign [Music] let's do a quick transmission test well I can tell you one thing she does not want to go in gear so we're gonna have uh have to figure something out there okay so I got some figuring to do with the transmission deal obviously so in the meantime I want to get some of this glass out of my way it'll make it a little safer for me to work on this thing and there we have it so uh this car is not going into gear um it seems like when it's running uh the torque converter just locked up or something so it won't even shift down out of park um so I thought about just adding some stuff to the but apparently the uh bottom of my transmission dipstick is busted off which is odd because I'm pretty sure when it went to first go look at this car I checked the fluid in there and it fluid looked good and the bottom of that dipstick was there so that's got me a little confused um so having said that I think what I'm gonna do it's not just takes a little bit of time uh doesn't really add too much to the project here I'm going to pull the trans pan off drain it see if I can find the end of that dipstick and just see how things look up in there so let's go ahead and do that a sec all right I'm gonna leave these two in just a little bit and then this single drain into my My Pan there's obviously fluid in there oh There She Goes okay we got one more head out drop this thing down our X okay all right well let me uh pull this pan out and we'll see what we got inside there so everything looks uh pretty well in order up in there so let's uh see what we have in the pan so there as you can see is the end of the dipstick bust it off right there I'm not sure why but uh you know there's there's a bit of a clutch material on the bottom but I wouldn't say it's anything major there's no chunks and there's nothing else there's nothing else in there it seems to look pretty normal it doesn't doesn't smell burnt it smells normal so yeah I don't know I guess uh I'm gonna clean this pan out I may just try to weld this back onto the dipstick for now and just so we can use it I don't know why it busted off like I said seemed like it was or I'm pretty sure it was on there when I went and checked the car out first so now we'll repair that we'll clean this out I'm gonna throw it back on and we'll put fresh fluid in there and uh hopefully we can we'll be able to check the level then and see if we can grab any gears [Music] okay so got the pan pretty well cleaned out looks like it standed up a little bit but should be all right and then I got the dipstick repaired professionally so you should do the trick so I'm gonna go ahead and throw this pan back in and let's start putting some fresh fluid in there [Music] all right so we got the pan back on the I'm gonna go ahead and fill it up with some Lucas and then uh type f fluid so let's let's see if we can get some action out of this girl I'm gonna just put this whole bottle in here hopefully maybe it uh freeze up whatever the heck was going on in there who knows it might not [Music] um since there really wasn't anything funky in the pan or uh nothing looked weird up in the transmission I don't know that I'm gonna be able to get this thing uh shifting for me and it may be another issue uh that's going on with this thing but we're gonna give it a whirl and hopefully something happens all right so after all that uh messing with the uh I figured something else out with this key being having to be so far forward uh to keep the motor running it won't allow the shifter to come out of P so like if the key would stay in this position you still shift if I put the key farther forward she didn't want to shift so I gotta either figure out if I need a new key lock cylinder here I think it's probably the ignition switch that's uh something not lining up on there I mean this thing fires up but as soon as it gets back to that point it just dies uh if it got back to that point I'd be able to shift it if it stays up here it don't allow the shifter to go so I may tear into the steering wheel uh and just kind of go back in here a little ways see if I can figure out what the heck's going on but uh hopefully we can get something figured out here and uh get this thing moving well I finally made it to the uh the ignition switch which is this dealie right here I have to get the dash out that was quite the job anywhoes I think what I'm gonna try is you can loosen these two little nuts on here and this thing slides let's see if I can show you so I gotta loose now you can you can slide it and so then that uh ultimately then the key will be in a different spot according to where that's sitting so now I'm going to go ahead and throw um everything on the column back on up to the steering wheel or maybe not quite the steering wheel yet but just to give the key a try we'll try to adjust that to where we need it and hopefully that fixes our issue so let's uh let's give it a try here okay so I think I'm at the point where I could give it a try Okay so [Music] and there we have it oh we got reverse buddy all right um I'm holding this thing now but I think I'm gonna try to lock it right in place where I have it so I'll reach around here this is awesome okay this is great I did not really think that was gonna work but it did see and maybe running out of fuel tank here all right I believe I did run out of fuel so let me go get some more fuel a second we'll see if we can get this thing back going again all right so we're in gear and we're going my door doesn't latch but I'm okay with that I got some more fuel so it's running it's driving look at that foreign look at that another old Relic back on the road it's not running great but running actually it seems like the longer I run it the better it starts the better it runs so uh might be cleaning out some of the cobwebs you know well that about does it for this episode uh I'm not really sure what I want to do with this car to be honest with you I don't know if it's worth saving because of the roof I tried looking online see if I could find a replacement roof of some kind and I didn't have any luck finding anything so I don't know if it's worth using for a derby car that might be an option but other than the roof it is still a fairly solid car I was just missing a few parts and pieces here and there that are probably not easy to find but regardless she's running and back on the road again so I'm pretty pumped that I got it uh running and driving now thanks for watching and we'll see you next week
