A mechanical table with a hidden table top for puzzles

table for weeks and it's a minor inconvenience so the way i see it i only really have two options option a you know just like make peace with it and call it a day or option b where i could spend months of work and thousands of dollars in materials and engineering hours to build a custom multi-purpose table that considering my track record probably has like a 40 chance of being usable so obviously i went with option b because i mean you know me this is the type of fight that i like cannot back away from so i want to make a table that has two separate table tops one that i can have dinner on and one where i can work on jigsaw puzzles and there are some existing solutions out there for like board games but usually the top surface you have to like remove it and put it off to the side and i do not like the idea of that for no good reason but also they tend to have this really tall edge around it so kind of like a pool table and i don't want to have to lean over an edge to work on the puzzle so i started sketching and i thought about like what about a table with a tray and some like storage solution under it or like a hinged lid or an accordion mechanism and all of those are really valid solutions but i was like no let's make it more complicated and over engineered than that so i decided to go with tambor so tambour are these flexible wood panels with fabric on the back and the first step is cutting down these oak boards to the right length the right thickness and the right width [Music] [Music] it's a process that requires both patience and precision out of which i have none so that's why i look like this actually i take that back that's just like my regular build face so this will make up the top table surface and the reason i wanted to make it out of tambor is because it can go around bends so i can just push this off to the side it will go in under the table and that's how i access the other table top at this point in the process i realized i was like way in over my head so i hit up my team engineer stu who's in the uk and he helped me figure out all the million ins and outs of this project tambour is usually used for like cabinets and not as a load-bearing surface so i'm going to use these router bits to make sure that the slats can rest on each other and spread the load first of all this build montage is completely out of order but more importantly what i want you to know is that this step hurt my thumbs so much because i had to do almost 500 router table ops and i spent an entire day pushing wood up against the router table fence so my thumbs really deserved some extra love that evening [Music] yes i 3d printed a tiny bathtub for my thumb i have nothing if not dedicated to my jokes also i might need more foam [Music] [Applause] so [Music] [Music] this panel took me almost a week to make it's also just one of those processes where the stakes get higher and higher the further along you are because you put so much time into it and you really don't want to mess it up on one of the last steps but one of the reasons it took such a long time was was because of this so tambour panels are like notorious for getting stuck all the time because any small misalignment between the left and the right side and it will immediately jam so i was thinking if you had sprockets on each side and they were attached to a hand crank then that could help ensure that they're always in perfect alignment plus it's so much cooler if you don't think it's cool now you'll think it's cool in the end just hold out until the end so i'm going to make the side pieces of the table and it's going to be a five-step cnc operation but i have a lot of confidence because i am known for sticking the landing every time just like simone biles simone simone it just has so many different parts that need to be perfectly aligned and the tambour panel is such an awkward shape and so fragile which i can relate to because that was me as a teenager but i'm also just so frustrated with it because every test fitting is so hard i've just been having like anxious work dreams about this table every night for a week and i'm really doubting that i'll be able to turn this into like a functional table it's just they're just so many problems that i need to solve but i'm going to keep on tweaking and adjusting it i'm not giving up yet because i am a woman on a mission to slightly improve her jigsaw puzzle experience and i will stop at nothing i wish that was like a like a movie trailer voice yeah we can do that this is a story of a woman who will stop at nothing to slightly improve her jigsaw puzzle experience not even spending hours trying to fit this bike chain link into the wrong hole or ruining these sprockets while trying to reduce their radius by 0.5 millimeters not even this very cute dog carrying a plastic bag can distract her from her mission and she will show the world a mechanical table that still doesn't work so like any same person i decided to weld everything in place and hope that that would magically fix everything somehow and weirdly enough it kind of did so next up was making the legs and stu told me to burnish the tape and today i learned the burnish does not mean hit it with a blowtorch it just means scrape it to make sure you get all the air bubbles out we live we learn this is a really cool work holding technique by the way if you ever don't have enough space to put in clamps or screws you're not required to put it on fire with a blowtorch though you can omit that step [Music] this i can't believe i've gone an handles for the table to move the tambour and lift the secondary table top up and down but then a very powerful creature took over my body called the myog it's also known as the make your own gnome and it's like this little voice inside of you that's like maybe instead of buying handles for twenty dollars you should just get a lathe and make your own handles um so i have a lathe now hi i'm nervous for whatever reason i know but i just yeah yes yes turn your hands quickly my rings yeah okay i uh installed the quick change tool post it wasn't even a hammer as a channel lock that i used as a hammer don't so i'll go up to 500. this is safe stew oh little trips are coming up [Music] is it okay that i feel like a wizard [Music] if you've ever learned how to use a new tool and it just like if it just feels like infinite fields of possibilities it's just one of the best feelings in the world so i was texting with my friends evan and caitlin yesterday and they're going to come over for dinner tonight the table is almost ready to a point where i think i could get it done before dinner it feels a little bit like one of those like arbitrary deadlines that they put into reality shows where they're like oh my god it needs to be done before tuesday but honestly i i've just been working at this table for the last two months and if that is the extra motivation i need to finish it then so be it i'm gonna have dinner with my friends on this table and then i'm gonna force them to work on a jigsaw puzzle with me but like force them in a sense that they're too nice to say no also doesn't count as consent kids [Music] i didn't have time to take a shower but welcome [Music] oh yes yes and now oh no way that is so cool this is so cool [Applause] so we had some dinner we played some board games we worked on a puzzle and we had a really great time we kind of looked like we were in a stock photo under the category of supportive friends hang out with friend who spent two months building a table and that's kind of where i'm at it's been about a week and i still need to sand and coat the table but i really wanted to like live with it before i commit to its final form and i realized for example like it needs to be a little bit taller because i couldn't cross my legs under it and there was also this edge that needed to be sanded down a little bit because it kept snagging up against my legs so there are a bunch of these little adjustments that i need to make but with that said i love this table so much i'm so proud of it especially considering what a challenge this build was for me like i made so many prototypes before i even started filming for this video and also i had to overcome my fear of table saws and leads which are two of the tools that i'm most scared of and it was also my first hardwood project so now i'm gonna take a break and finally work on a jigsaw puzzle [Music] i got this new puzzle with cowboy boots and pasta on it but you can't look at the I always thought about getting a board game table but hesitated because of the same reasons she gives. Would be pretty cool if someone would make a streamlined mass produced version out of her idea: No need to take a way the top table plate that needs to be awkwardly stored somewhere, and the second plate rising up to be flush with the edge.

The whole design feels kind of IKEA to me, I bet they could simplify it enough to be mass market ready.
